Welcome back to me documenting my thoughts on all the episodes of faerie tale theatre!
Thank you for hanging out! Stay safe and have a great day/night/unit of time! I'll see you in the next video...bye!
I love the Prince (Adam) from Disney’s adaptation because of one thing; Howard Ashman designed him to look like his lover at the time, they’d been together for years. It’s a tribute and a touching one.
aww, that's beautiful 🥺 they also gave him the same eyes as beast and the prince so that Belle would look at him and see through his eyes that he's the same person inside.
Wasn't that the Jean Cocteau version? He casted his boyfriend as the Beast/Prince and also the "Gaston" character. As far as I know Glen Keane based the Disney Beast's human form on renaissance art (Adam from the Sistine chapel and the statue of David specifically).
Fun fact: I accidentally posted this video on the 38th anniversary of the episode's original air date...what are the odds?
it was just meant to be! You and this movie are just soul bonded I suppose. Lucky!

@@SessVlogs accurate tho :D
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I just had to look up if this was a leap year to make sure I wasn’t making a fool of myself 😅 I’m all good!
@@SessVlogs lmao this is so much better than what I came up with.
Shelly needs more love and no hate about how her acting was in the shinning, she was dealing with depression and anxiety. She can act she just needs a positive environment to show her talent, plus my favorite episode of this series is Hansel and Gretel and warning it actually gets very dark
From what I know about Shelley she seems like a kind and talented person. I've never liked how the media exploited her struggles with mental health and looked the other way with what she went through on the shining set. We stan Shelley Duvall in this house.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff yes we do and with no spoilers but the Hansel and Gretel episode could be one of the darkest ones tbh
@@magicalpasta5462 thanks for the warning, I'll keep that in mind. 😳
Avery’s singing voice 💕 like a hot cup of something soothing after a cold day
😭😭😭 that's so kind. I'm by no means a trained singer or anything but I have always loved to sing and am trying to get more comfortable singing in front of others.
I first saw this in 1988 as a 9 year old, and I was so freaked out by the horror parts, his smoking hands, writhing and screaming, that I tried to never see it again, but also I was drawn to it and would watch it through my fingers. I recognize all the great things it’s doing, but it has never become one of my favorites of this series. However, it was also my first introduction to Susan Sarandon, and I’m grateful for that. And I find Anjelica Huston hilarious. The decision to film the “real” world on film and the castle on video tape was the first time I could make my family see there was a visual difference that I had noticed on sitcoms of the era that they said they couldn’t see. That, and the terrifying visuals were mainly what I remember of this one.
Hooray, I’m excited for more when they appear!
I didn't even pick up on the choice of when to use film and video! That's fascinating! Susan is great and honestly a bit underappreciated for how much range she has. She's fantastic as the evil queen in enchanted. 😊 Thanks for watching!
"Chivalry isn't dead, Chivalry is just hairy" LOL 😆
XD XD XD
The Beast looks like a medieval Werewolf Lion vampire thing. It's definitely a strong choice. I also love that we get Janet and The Grand High Witch acting together in the same episode.
When her dad finds out she left I was so close to saying, "DAMNIT JANET!!"
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff you should have.
Klaus Kinski was in Nosferatu where he played...well, who else? Dracula. So the vampire thing isn't too far off.
I love Faerie Tale Theatre, but I can also say with a passion that I love Shelly Duvall's Nightmare Classics. They really let Shelly Duvall go wild with all these shows she did.
I need to cover those as well!
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I agree! The thing I love about these series are that there aren't that many episodes in each one so you don't get stuck with a bigger backlog of episodes like something like Fact or Fiction.
@@vegetasasuke0 true, although I would sell my soul for new episodes of BB lol
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff We can always hope that someone picks up a reboot.
You should check out the Jean Cocteau version from the 1940s. This version borrows a lot of it's aesthetic from that as well as some of the scenes. Definitely worth a watch. Also, you should read up on the actor who plays the beast, Klaus Kinski. He was a... pretty interesting character to say the least. And not exactly in a good way. Good actor, awful human being.
awful human being what Klaus Kinski do🤔
@@eliaspoulos9908 en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Klaus_Kinski
@@tristanpetty7173 oh boy he is a bad man😱
@@eliaspoulos9908 Yep.
I will totally check out that movie because I know it's a classic.
Also omg 😳😳😳 I had no idea about the actor irl. That's...disturbing to say the least. I had never heard of him before covering this. I suppose some of his more intense scenes as the beast make a bit more sense given the context that he sucked for real.
This beast gives me Phantom of the Opera vibes, but more chill. The sadness in his eyes, the hate of his "ugliness" (of course Phantom is a version of the Beast and the Beast story, so). But anyway, it makes me happy because I really like Phantom of the Opera (the musical)
You'll be happy to know I want to cover phantom of the opera and the infamous sequel love never dies...and if you like this iteration of the beast I recommend Crimson Flower. It's an animated version from Russia and the English dub features Tim Curry as the beast. It's also on my list. 😊
This was a WILD ride 🤣 I thank you for all the ASMR references.
Thank you for looking at this series Fearie Tale Theatre as many people don't review it. And I really do enjoy this episode and show overall.
If you want a version pre Disney you should check out the 1976 version from Hallmark with George C Scott as the beast and his wife Trisha as Belle. I found it on RUclips a dew years ago and it's now when one of my favorite versions of the story. The audio at the beginning is out of sync, but it gets better over time. It can be a little slow, but the main focus is the developing relationship between Belle and the beast.
Thank you for watching! I'll make sure to cover that one. I just love this fairy tale and watching as many versions as I can has been so fun.
My god..ive seen a bunch where the beast .entions he hunts for pray in the woods but it never actually held any significance to the story aside from him just not eating when they eat together..actually SHOWING him doing it, horrifying beauty and feeling ashamed is gebuinly shocking! Its so much more meaningful, especially to her seeing past the traits he cant help for the good ones! A level of understanding beyond just the phyical looks is so rare! In the origional he was also made mentally limited which is part of why he couldnt articualte to beauty in the situation and kept asking her to marry him. Beauty saw past both his looks and seeming limited mind to appreciate his heart whcih so few properly depict. This isn't quite there but still comes a lot closer without risking a negative portrayal of a person with special needs.
I've never seen this version of Beauty and the Beast with Shelley Duvall before and I think the Beast is more charming than horrifying.
I very much hope you do more of these Faerie Tale Theatre reviews!! Can't get enough ☺
Hopefully I'll get a new one out soon!
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff yaaay!! Maybe Pinocchio? or Little Red Riding Hood? I mean, any episode is a good choice but those two are particularly hilarious to rewatch because I've missed so many jokes as a kid, really meant for adults to get just as much enjoyment out of it as the kids lol
To this day, I remain dumbfounded that Klaus Kinski played the Beast in this. That must have been a nightmare to film, considering all the horror stories of Klaus Kinski on every set he was ever on and... horror stories about the man in general.
yeah, I had somehow never heard of him before covering this and have learned about his reputation in the comments here....oooohhhh, boy I now feel terrible for Susan and everyone else involved. Big yikes
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Me when I learned Werner Herzog held a gun to Kinski's head on the set of Aguirre and when I learned the native actors on Fitzcarraldo wanted to murder him: "Isn't that... extreme?" Me when I learned even slightly more about Kinski: "No um... I understand now. Jesus Christ."
@@lizan2678 yeah, I heard that he had a "controversial past" and was like, "how bad could it possibly...oh good god it's actually worse" yikes
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Poor, poor Pola and Natassja...
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Someone's doing a marathon of Faerie Tale Theatre reviews and talks a bit about tidbits about some of the behind the scenes and actors. Maybe when she gets to this, there will be some more info.

@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Awe thank you!
i just came back to this classic after watching the jean cocteau video. this video is so iconic
Thank you!
I actually wasn't thinking of making that fanfic until you said anything.
But I'll have to finish my Spider-Man falls for Wolverine's daughter fanfic first. lol
Haha, I'm glad I could spark your creativity. 😂
I cannot believe you only have around 3000 subscribers, you deserve so much more!
Thank you so much!
Loved this episode! It’s actually a play-by-play of the Jean Cocteau version .
I still need to cover that one!
Aw this video was fun to watch!! I haven't heard of this series of these fairy tale adaptations! This is fun to watch! I did see the Beast's Make up reminds me a lot of the Jean Cocteau make up. I think from watching this. The show must have used Cocteau's version for inspiration ^^
Yes, a few people more knowledgeable than me in the comments have talked about the massive similarities between the two versions. I should cover Cousteau's version at some point.
I was born in 2007, so way after the show, but my mom used to have all the dvds and I watched them all the time as a kid. I was always terrified of the Pied Piper one!!
I haven't seen that one yet but thanks for the warning. 😳 I also grew up watching things with my parents and grandparents that were made way before I was born.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff You should watch it! It’s one of the creepier episodes.
Susan Sarandon looks so much like Bette Davis in this!! the Mildred Rogers vibes…
EDIT to add> Anytime Belle shouts,”Beast!” I think of Alyssa Edwards.
I really liked the costume design team decided to go for a specific time period, 16th or 17th century I believe. Also, and don't why, but misremembered this episode having Bernadette Peters as Beauty, but turns out its Susan Sarandon. Oops.
I know, I love it too! They're both great actresses but I loved seeing Susan in this role. 😊
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff The powder blue really does look great on her.
I had no idea there was so many adaptions of this story. Seeing as you work in the film industry, would you ever want to make your own take on Beauty and the Beast?
Oh I would absolutely love to! It's been done so many times that I would need to think of a new way to tell the core story well but Belle is a favorite character of mine and I would love to play her
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Oh, I didn't know you wanted to play Belle aswell. I'm pleasantly surprised to hear that. Well, you're a hardcore fan so I'm confident you would make a good version.
@@bazbanter9329 thank you! I appreciate that ☺️
I love the Beast in this one. Gives me very like "Introvert and slightly Autistic" vibes. Also, his human version... Let's just say I would GLADLY kiss that prince for as long as possible.
This was very inspired by Jean Cocteau’s 1946 movie La Belle et Le Bete
Have you seen the 1946 French version of Beauty and the Beast? This episode is pretty much the condensed version of that film. It was directed by Jean Cocteau, so there's a lot of surreal symbolism, but it makes the movie absolutely amazing! You should really give it a watch if you haven't yet. ^^!
No but I want to cover it. I love beauty and the beast and classic movies and can't believe I've never watched it.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuffThere’s also a movie from 1987 that I grew up with. It has Rebecca De Mornay and John Savage. It’s another great version. It’s also a musical.
I love how every version has him just called "the beast" by everyone until he transforms back. Even if they arn't trying to do the surprize, he is just "the beast." Even if they are going for it being a twist for Beauty, he could just be like..my name is Carl by the way. Don't need to put a PRINCE in front of that or anything but I'd prefer Carl to "Beast." I know it must be hard for someone always refered to as beauty to understand the hurt of being called something less than flattering but..Carl? Please? Thanks so much.
If this is Cocteau-inspired, where the heck is Avnol?
Hey Avery! Hope you'll bring back this Faerie Tale series. So much fun to watch!
Also, love that you're reviewing different versions of Beauty & the Beast. Have you seen this version? ruclips.net/video/QuqIqTjQGDM/видео.html
Thank you for watching! I need to keep covering more episodes. The community has been asking for a "Fairy Tale February" so there will probably be a lot of it then 🙂 and thanks for that version of beauty and the beast...I haven't seen this one yet. 🙂
Uppity Mic! And chocolate chips in the coffee is always good times! I believe Starbucks calls it a mocha latte and charges like $8 for it? Fantastic hair, BTW!
Haha, thank you!
I never seen this beside you making the thumbnail for this not that long ago.
Speaking of Beast to Man, It's actually funny cause I got my haircut today and I feel like prince.
The mic bit is too real! I just decided to own it and keep it in the shot. My room isn't perfectly soundproof, so the closer I place the mic, the less echoey the sound is gonna be anyway :)
Also, wow, Avery, you're almost at 3K now!
I did my best 😅 it's a tiny room so if anything moves literally an inch everything can go wrong lol. And I know!! I can barely believe it!!
5:40 Given that the Beast is most often depicted as some kind of Lieon creature, it's not that surprising to me that they would go that way with this one. I actually like the look. The prosthetics and the process to put them on is commendable to those willing to sit in the chair for at LEAST 4 hours.
It is super impressive prosthetics...apparently the actor who played beast here was a monster in real life so maybe that's why I find him more scary here?
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Yeah, the cruel irony that the Beast was played by an actual beast of man.
Avery talks about stuff, I wasn't alive when faerie tale theatre was on air but I have always loved fairy tales and I really enjoyed watching faerie tale theatre episodes on RUclips, are you planning on doing any more episodes of faerie tale theatre?
Glad you liked it! Yes, I am going to do more episodes of this show soon. 🙂
I just rewatched this a couple days ago, and my huge crush on Susan Sarandon just got worse!
She kills in this omg I love her
Have you not seen the version where Rebecca DeMornay plays Beauty?
What is the tale of beauty and the beast if not a tale to teach people that being into furries is okay lmao
😂😂😂 it may not be the story they meant to tell but the subtext is there all the same.
The beast seems to have a million roses. What’s one rose?
I mean..any cersion of the fther who has other kids is going to be some level of unlikable. They tend to portray the other children as selfish, materialitic, entitled and self angrandizing but considering he named one child BEAUTY, can we blame them for a complex? I mean..growing up aside the clear favorite from birth is likely to cause some self image issues and animocity for that golden child. Its honestly surprising Beuaty isnt as messed up in the head as she could be either considering she was just given this descriptor aa a name when she would have been a baby and rasied as the best one. Everyone else gets a normal name but BEAUTY is special so she gets a postitve descriptor of her physial appearence to either feel the pressure to live up to or belive she just always will be to everyone because shes that great.
Horrifyingly charming???
I'll allow it 😅
The Business is dying and i want to go to him.
I miss the beast lol thats just too funny
Right???
“My bangs are doing a disservice to how her bangs look”
I felt that in my gay lil heart
Is it me or is one of the sisters portrayed by Angelica Huston?
yeah! I didn't realize at first but I adore her :)
That is one frightening furry man
Agreed...love your pfp BTW!
Can u check h2o season 2 and season 3
I'm gonna do another video where I pickup where I left off in season one soon.
I like Disney's papa Marcel better..mostly because I'll end up looking like him. When the Beast pops up err transforms, I thought he looked creepier than when he was all hairy and monstery and stuff. This was alright though. I can't help but compare this to the 87' cbs adaptation and how good that was.
There's so many adaptations of this story and I'm determined to cover as many as I can find just like Alice in wonderland. I felt the same about his transformation in this one tbh. Apparently the actor who played beast was a creep in real life so maybe there's a reason we feel that way.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Yea I looked him up, this Klaus fella was trash in every sense of the word. Sometimes judging by your gut is reasonable...sometimes.
I don’t know why, but I always cringe when I see Klaus Kinski in anything. Giving what he was like IRL. Never mind I know why.
Yup, didn't know that until after posting this but...that's why.
this story is not the same without talking furniture
But see in this one we get creepy, unexplained hands that pour drinks. 😅
