Thank you for hanging out in my little corner of the internet. Stay safe and have a great day/night/unit of time. I'll see you in the next video...bye!! :)
I am READY for Faerie Tale Theatre February
I love that little old southern Fairy Godmother. This was a fun episode.
Jean Stapleton is so cute here!
The version where the stepsisters mutilate themselves and then get blinded is the Grimms' Aschenputtel. That actually came into print about two hundred years AFTER the Charles Perrault version, which is the one we all know and love. (Strangely enough, it's the Grimms' version that's featured in Into The Woods.)
That makes sense! I personally prefer the French version but can never remember if it or the German one came first.
I freaking LOVE this episode! Cinderella’s second dress is super lovely, and Jean Stapleton is one of the most delightful fairy godmothers ever! It’s honestly a comfort episode! And the king’s comments make me laugh so much (“What have you been calling her? ‘Hey you’?”)
Agreed on all points! I love Matthew Broderick's awkward little prince too.
Jean Stapleton also showed up in FTT's version of Jack and the Beanstalk, as the giant's wife. Now where would Jean Stapleton have gotten the experience to play the put-upon wife of a boorish husband? 😁
"Can you wait until later please?"
The way Matthew Broderick talks to his dad like that, it's almost as if he... just can't wait to be king! 😁
Also the sister cutting the toe off was the Grimm Brothers version. The version from Perrault is the most adapted version.
Oh yeah! The Grimm version is the super messed up one....that's par for the course 😂 lol I love the prince in this one.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff I made that joke because as you probably know, Matthew Broderick would later voice Simba in The Lion King.
@@tristanpetty7173 yep, always love the lion king 👑
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff On a side note, since you brought up brunette Cinderella, I did this drawing a few years ago of my own take on the character with black raven hair.

Ok so a little context for what I am about to say. When I was in grade school I got for Halloween as a present from my mom Shelly Duvall's Faerie Tale theater on DvD the full series, so in a way I grew up watching it. It holds a special place, and I was so happy to see someone who adroes it too reviewing it on RUclips, so thank you so much from that. In fact I believe it was this show that got me to fall in love with Folklore and Fariy Tales. After all that I have three recomendations for you to watch/reveiw and it is because of who the surpriseing star in them were. Aladdin, which has James Earl Jones palying the Genie; second is Sleeping Beauty staring Bernedette Peters and Christopher Reeve; Finally is The Boy Who Left Home to Find out about the Shivers and has Christopher Lee in it.
This show is such a gem just like Shelley herself and if I ever met her I'd tell her thank you for sharing her love of storytelling with us. 💛 I'll be sure to check out those episodes!
I love Faerie Tale Theatre so much! It's such a comfort show for me, some of my fave episodes are definitely The Dancing Princesses, Cinderella and Rapunzel. Bless the lovely Shelley Duvall for giving us all this magic✨.
I loved Shelley Duvall's Fairy Tale Theatre! She did a lot of fun stuff for kids in the 80s...even liked her brief foray into gothic productions called Nightmare Classics
Oooh I totally want to see nightmare classics!
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff ruclips.net/video/2xcHhpf4oNk/видео.html
I watched this show on TV in the earlie 90's in Bulgaria and I was obsessed with it. I recorded a few episode on VHS and my favorite one is still The Dancing Princesses. The sister dynamic, the humour, the more mature and yet playful tone, the acting... Better than most rom coms. 🤪
There's so many good ones I know there will be requests for this show until I've covered them all 😅
Can't... wait... 🤩
I recognise the step mother, she’s the principal from Grease😮 I don’t think any of these can top Jeff Goldblum Wolf 😂
Oh yes, I know I knew her from somewhere but couldn't put my finger on it.
Jeff Goldblum wolf should have won an Emmy honestly.
It's interesting to see how productions separate themselves from the most well-known version of a property. I think the most famous dark-haired US Cinderellas are the tv adaptations of Roger & Hammersteins. Julie Andrews in the 50s and then Brandi in the 00s. Skip Leslie Ann Warren.
I'm so here for more Cinderella videos if you need a break from Beauty & the Beast (though Belle is one of my favorites). If you do make a comparison video, ModernGurlz made one ranking them by best Cinderella dress. It has a few international versions non-US viewers hold above the disney one.
I think Cinderella needs her own playlist just like beauty and the beast and Alice in wonderland because it's a favorite of mine.
What great timing, I’ve been reviewing every episode of Fairie Tale Theatre on my blog and just posted my thoughts on Cinderella! One of my commenters shared your video and I loved seeing your reactions. This was one of my favorites when I was a kid and it’s aged remarkably well. Glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you so much and welcome to the channel! (And if that commenter ever sees this thanks for repping the channel 😊) I'll have to read your blog because I love this show.
19:19 - Now that you've brought up Ferris Beauler's day off and paying for parking at the princes ball, I want to see a scene where the valet takes the pumpkin carriage out for a joyride. What would that even look like? What would he do? Would Cindy know? Would she be afraid what the fairy godmother would think? Would the townsfolk be like "WHAT THE HOLY HELL WAS THAT!?" or "Damn royal staffing, always buzzing by in thier gourd shaped vehicles.." I WANT TO SEE THIS SO BAD NOW! MY IMAGINATION IS RACING LIKE A JOYRIDE PUMPKIN!
I too now wanna see that happen lol
I love that you’re doing this series. It makes me want to binge-watch the whole series for the sake of nostalgic nirvana!
It's an underrated gem and all the episodes are available for free on RUclips. 😊
This is one of my favorites. And I know I mentioned this a bunch of times before, but I think you'll love the Hansel and Gretel movie from 2002 with Howie Mandel and Delta Burke.
Yes! I have that one on the list. 😊
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff cool. I really hope you like. And fair warning. You might want to eat something while watching it. Cause believe me, it will make you hungry.
I watched, and loved, Faerie Tale Theater as a kid but somewhere between seasons 2 and 4 my mother decided we didn't need Showtime anymore so I missed the later episodes. Getting the highlights of this one with your commentary is the best possible way to see it.
Thank you so much for watching! They're all free on RUclips now so you can watch them back. 😊
2:55 omg I would love to see this video!! I wrote an essay on cinderella for a college children's literature course I just took and in my opinion it's super feminist
Thank you!! I hate when people say she's a weak/non feminist character because they're wrong 😅
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff seriously, and there are so many iterations of the Cinderella story that there are so many ways to interpret what it means
@@daniellel230 I love fairy tales because they've been around for so long and they're told all over the world.
I'm brazilian, and this show only came to Brazil in the early 90's, so my memories are probably from when I was 8-ish and the song at the beginning still makes me feel like a little kid (I don't even know if the song is part of the original show, probably not). I had to rewatch this just so i could watch your video and I clearly remember the effects for the magic stuff and the second dress. But yeah, Flashdance meets Ferris Bueller!
Aw, that's lovely 😊 I love covering this show!
Always stoked to see another FTT vid OMG let's goooooo 😍😍😍
Such a great show! 💛💛
when I was little my cousin had an indoor pool in her house, and we would swim and then go watch a movie> and she had all disneys, all fairytale theatre, all anything you could collect. My favourite FTT is Three Little Pigs. Jeff Goldblum!
Another great review. I've got another request in mind that could be fitting for Fairy-Tale February. It's called "Jim Henson's Mother Goose Stories", and each nursery rhyme featured has it's own little lore, as if it were like a fairy tale. From genuine classics like "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star", and "Little Boy Blue" from.... even the shortest of rhymes like "Eeny Meeny Miney Moe"! (No joke) I'll be hoping to see if this show has any familiar feels to Shelley Duvall's fairy tale TV series.
Also..... (20:59) Possible shoutout to Jim Henson's "Hey, Cinderella!"?
Thanks for the recs! I'll look that up. 😊
thank you for this!! it always bugs me how people will talk about empowerment and standing up to abusers while citing cinderella as the helpless damsel. like are we talking about the same character???
Anytime! It genuinely makes me angry the way people try to break down that story.
This was a show I grew up with. I believe I said it before but there was also a tall tales series as well you should totally review. My favorite episode of that is Johnny Appleseed played by Martin Short.
I adore martin short!
One of the stepsisters was played by Edie McClurg, who was the principal's secretary in Ferris Bueller's Day Off. I hope she got paid a lot of money for this role, because it wasn't very glamorous.
The king was played by the guy who played the Governor on a tv series called, "Benson."
And it was difficult to hear Edith Bunker with a southern accent.
Oh I missed that about the secretary! Bad guys are always fun to play so I bet it was a great time for everyone. 😊
YAH!!! There's no better way than to celebrate the month of love with fairy tail content 😍😊 Should I be hoping for another BatB video in the near future? 🤓
Yes definitely beauty and the beast!
You should do a RUclips series where you take and analyze every version of Cinderella you can find. I'd do it, but I have no time, resources, or talent lol
I currently have a series where I'm going through all the beauty and the beast content I can find so honestly Cinderella makes sense as a series too. 🙂 (I'm sure you have tons of talent btw)
Hi! I saw this comment and I couldn’t help but reply - I am actually attempting to do this on my channel! I’ve already got a few episodes up. 😊
This was definitely a charming one. Also, I believe that Jennifer Beals who plays Cinderella was one of the first women of color to play the role (she mixed with African- American and Caucasian).
Oh I didn't know that! She did a great job capturing the character. 😊
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Yeah, loved her performance. And Jean Stapleton was no slouch either.
@@shelbymckinney8888 oh yeah, shelley managed to pull together the perfect casts every time 🥰
I was hoping you would intro the vid by saying
"Hello, I'm Avery Toksaboutt. Welcome to Talks About Stuff Theater."
Dang it, I'll have to do that in the next fairy tale theatre video 😅
I love faerie tale theatre it’s a good show
Same!
You might want to review The Slipper And The Rose, a musical with a score by The Sherman Brothers. And the various versions of Rodgers and Hammerstein's Cinderella.
That sounds delightful 🙂
ok off topic but i love seeing people who are usually in the lives in the comments/gen
Always love to see you guys! Thanks for hanging out. 🙂
Can't remember the name Cannon Family something or the other.... Anyway, musical Princess and the Frog. Robert Williams is the frog. YES!! 🎶🎶Too Tall Frog🎶🎶
Ok a quick Google I got my Frog Princes's mixed up. Robert Williams is in The Tale of the Frog Prince, witch is Shelley Duvall's Faerie Tale Theatre. The song is from the other one and pretty fun. This is what happens when you comment spare of the moment and before you have enough coffee in your system.
Haha, no worries! I love the frog prince episode 😍
You should do Jim Henson’s the Storyteller
Yes! It's been on the list for a while so hopefully soon!
*I love this prince* ❤
Never heard of this series but now I interested in checking out the other episodes. Also who doesn’t love the idiots in love trope? ❤
Two idiots in love trope is always lovely and stressful...I love it so much. 😊
There's a Primus album called Pork Soda, so maybe drinking ham is a thing? It was nice to see Jean Stapleton in a very different role.
Fair point lol. 😅 And yeah gotta love jean!
Ironically enough about your statement, I had written a paper like a year ago for my lit. class how Cinderella is a feminist story 😊🎉 She cover comes adversity but remains a good and kind person, choosing to forgive her abusers rather than rightfully punishing them. Although we all know her fairy godmother wasn’t so kind…
Yes!! 👑🙌 Thank you for reminding me how much I wanna do this video!
The producer is the same Fred Fuchs from AVGN's running joke.
Cinderella is one of those stories that's been told so often that you could pretty much build a channel solely around reviewing adaptations of it.
"And with that said, let's see how this Cinderella episode of Xena fares on the Rate-erella list!
Cinderella's Agency: 8
Prince As A Real Character: 4
Fairy Godmother Sass: 9
Stepfamily Wickedness: 4
Dress: 3
Carriage: 6
Magicalness: 5
Stay tuned for next week's episode, where we look at Courage the Cowardly Dog!"
Lol, yeah you could have a whole fairy tale channel for sure.
My vote for the next FTT episode is Rip Van Winkle.
I thought the Snow White one was pretty cool
I always thought that one was boring. Now the Golan/Globus Snow White...wow!@@c.w.r.794
Love it do Pinocchio next please
Oooh, I've heard about the Pinocchio episode!
I think that one would be a good one to review. It's a trip on its own
Remember Cinderella isn’t that old. She’s 19 according to the internet which makes the abuse she suffered a bit worse in my eyes. Abuse is always wrong regardless of the age of the victim but she was basically a very young adult, basically a kid in the story, being treated like farts
I got the DVD box set for my birthday
Yay!!!
Cool ❤
I like that she spoke up about her abuse but she didn’t really do much else to push back
I mean..even if she is going to meet the prince specifically, is that so bad? Is that not persuring a good time in itself? I mean..if you were given the oppertunity to go on a date with your favorite celebrity, is rhat saying you are a bad person who is showing bad traits? I cab assure you, whoever your celebrity sriah it, they are different in some very serious regaurd. It may not be in a bad way buy they are ABSOLUTLY not someone you actually know or like for the perosn they are no matter how much you've convinced yourself of it. You may love their talent, thier public image and the traits related to that but what you percieve them as is not a real person reflective of then until you've genuinly interacted enough to see that. So does that make you wrong for being excited to get to meet that perosn and hoping it leads down a positive path? The prince is that eras equivalent to a celebrity. Wanting to meet them and hoping a genuine mutual romantic connection developed is not wrong. Seeking marriage for the financial security without care about the perosn themsleves or because it's the expectation of your role by birth IS wrong but conflating the two is ignorant. Are you seriously telling me you would tell a celebrity you happened across at a party and connected with that you can't see each other again because people would assume you are a gold digger or reinforcing negative steriotypes for simply doing so? Getting married after one date..yeah. Thats not a good idea. Cinderella does have magic backing her corner and is living as a slave so while I do agree that is not the path for a person to just take..in context..yeah. would you pass the oppertunity to NOT BE A SLAVE? Especially when you are protected by a guardian spirt with godlike powers who has directed you down this path? It's a fantasy story..you got to relaize its not going to portray perfectly aligned societal standards to ours because it's not our societal world..a fucked up one from our perspective, sure! Everyone calls Cinderella her slave name even when she is liberated! Including her fairy godmother! It's not a world we live in so our it's set standard I feel Cindy is pretty justified in hitching up with the prince after they clearly had chemistry in what was the litteral most magical time of her life and by doing so she doesn't have to face unceasing abuse until the day she dies! Give her a break! Ariel and Belle BOTH had very comfortable lives but were bored because they wanted MORE! The former even persued a fun she didn't know romantically as a result! Niether were enslaved but agreed to marry guys they knew for less than a year tops and even treated them like a prisoner in Belles case because it gave them access to more than the already decent life they had. Again..Cinderella married her prince to be with the guy she loved and escape her abuser. Belle did the same except her love WAS her abuser and she was escaping her life in a town with her father to have a bunch of books in a castle. Keep in mind that Belle is also the story of the girl who persued a badboy and changed him unto marriage material as a fixer upper. Groomed a guy who was an abuser to her and others to be tolerable and attractive. Rather than leaving him and finding someone already with good behavioral traits. What message is it sending that is better than the one Cinderella is?
I know another one you may like, The Slipper and The Rose: A Cinderella Story.

Thank you! I'll have to watch that one!
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff that's okay
👍👍 :)
I 100% agree with you on Cinderella. People misjudge it so much! If you want to feel super validated about the story, especially the Disney film, The Take did a fantastic essay called "Stop Blaming the Victim".
ruclips.net/video/huLSdm6IH0g/видео.html
Omg I've seen that video! The take is fantastic at breaking down film theory from a female perspective. It's the same with a lot of these fairy tales, specifically beauty and the beast and the little mermaid. Fake feminism can easy call them sexist but these stories are wonderful allegories for womanhood, women's empowerment and even the queer experience.
@@AveryTalksAboutStuff Exactly! I feel so often people feel like there's a "right way" to be feminine and these stories, even though they're reflections of their times, were specifically told with the ability to be changed and adapted across various cultures, genders and other different perspectives.
@@apizzathatgiantforthesimpl5191 and they reflected very real feelings and challenges of women and other underrepresented groups of the time. Characters like Cinderella are people who lack autonomy but still advocate for themselves and when it's boiled down to ShE MArRIed tHE pRINcE ANd DId tHe cLEaNIng....I find that brand of criticism very lazy
Personally, it never sat well with me whenever I would see people describe put-upon male heroes as underdogs, but whenever a female hero was put-upon in much the same way, those same people would dismiss her as weak or pathetic. Watching that video from The Take was very vindicating in a way.
