  • I attempt to make a Fiber Optic cable by drawing out glass into thin strands. I'll test the cable at the end of the video. Glass can transmit light/information over long distances, however it need's to be pulled very thin to become flexible. Pulling out the glass may not actually be the hard part of today's project, watch to find out more! Subscribe = ruclips.net/user/MattJasa?su... #JasaGlass #GlassBlowing #LampWorking

Thank you! it works alright but doesn't bend as much as I hope. I'm gonna have to try again.

You know, you're kind of an incredible person. You made the manufacturing of these things super easy to understand, and also, the flex that is the glass chains you're wearing. Marvelous, would love to apprentice under you if I ever got the chance.

Thanks Barry! It was fun but I wouldn't recommend it. It left a bunch of pokey stringers in my shop; not the safest project.

You need two different types of glass, this is what creates the fiber optic effect in FO. Generally a softer glass outside and harder on the inside then it is pulled into the fiber. This traps the light inside as currently sharp bends would lose the light in this setup.Try perhaps rod inside of Boro tube of proper diameter and melt them together before the pull, I suspect you will see substantially different results that way.
Another way in many modern ones is coating with plastics if I recall correctly but that could be a pain in the ass as you would need to do it after the pull.

You can't combine soft glass and boro. The difference in their COE is too great, the soft glass cracks and shatters before the boro cools.

@@cathyerley3057 That is true Cathy, but I'm not sure if he's talking about soda lime and boro. My research said something about doped quartz, so it might be two slightly different types of quartz glass. It makes me want to try it [soda-lime + boro] pulled out hair thin to see what happens.

Thanks for the reply @Sedit T, although I have to slightly disagree. I believe the cladding was discovered a few decades after the phenomenon of FO.
Unclad glass or other transparent matter (plastic or water) can still transmit light a long distance if you consider air a natural cladding. So you aren't wrong, it does requires two materials or the light would spill out.
I also like that idea. I might try a slightly doped rod like Glass Alchemy Serum inside a clear tube to see what happens.
