I had an idea for capturing/storing water for a friend to use during dry season.
You would need very sturdy supports to withstand Big Joe using them for scratching posts, but to me, the old fashioned, giant rain barrel (watch an old episode of Petticoat Junction) is your best bet. I would put up a minimum of four. Covers should be saucer shaped, fitting tightly against the top of the tank, sloped down towards the center, with a small center opening, and possibly long, narrow slot openings running a partial distance between edges and center.
Anyway the cover needs to be able to prevent evaporation as much as possible, while allowing as much water to enter during rains as possible.
A closeable opening at or near the bottom is needed to attach a hose for transfer of contents. This way you could store enough water for a large pond, but only use as much as you need for the size you want.
Tall enough for bison 🦬 to comfortably clear underneath, plus height makes it empty quicker when needed.
Sturdy enough to be not knocked over.
Secure enough no critters or children get inside a dangerous containment.
Nearby, so no transportation is needed.
When I say hose, I mean something like a firehose, or instead, PVC pipe, are among many other possibilities for emptying.
Multiple tanks are better than one, extra large, because your increased opening size increases your capture. Also, in case of damage to one, you still have remaining reservoirs to depend on.
When I share ideas, I never expect them to be perfect as described, but hopefully with enough helpful content to make it useful as a starting point.
Whether this helps or not, I see what you are trying for, and I hope something works out. 😊
❤❤🦬🦬🦬🦬❤️❤️
I'm city folk and I don't have a clue, but can they make the cardboard wrap out of something edible?
I'm always so glad to see the recovery of bison in the US. I grew up near the Trexler nature preserve in PA, so I was able to see them almost 50 years ago. But almost no-one else in the country could easily put their naked eye on one. It took a lot of people and lot of effort to bring them back from the brink. Thank you.
Thank you for saying this. Dad said this whenever he was visiting our uncles back in the day. I’ve never seen one in person. I just admire Dusty. 😊
Yup! Call the turtle guy again. It’s not like you need snapping turtles!!
LETS ALL 272K OF US PRAY FOR RAIN AND MORE LAND FOR THEM!!!!!
Dusty, if you see the beautiful clay in Daniel's pond, you can see how it holds the water better than the silt and the muck. Perhaps if you dig down deeper into the pond to expose some beautiful clay, hopefully it will hold a lot more water for you. At least that helped us with our small backyard pond up in Connecticut back in the 1970's. We had some good clay up there. As long as we got rid of all the silt, we were golden. We always love having you a part of our day Dusty, Marissa and Brooks! You make us smile. If you can take a moment or two, my 97 year old Dad is in the ER right now and has been diagnosed with COVID. He woke up coughing something awful, so weak he could barely stand, and running a fever over 101. He's a tough, stubborn old Swede, but he didn't even fuss about leaving our home (which speaks volumes). So we could really use some prayers for Daddy. Thank you so much. With love, prayers, and gentle hugs for the 3 of you and for your critters too. God bless y'all, Donna Gulyas in Florida. 🥰🙏🙏🙏🦬🦬🦬🦬🐎🐔🌴

Get your doctor to give him Budesonide Inhalation Suspension in a nebulizer several times a day it is amazing but you have to ask for it they won’t do it! It help me and I still do it when I have flare ups! Praying 🙏

He is working on removing the muck as there is clay under it.
Congratulations on your new Red dog.
Wonderful news.
It's great that the hydrobed is helping you in so many ways
Working smarter not harder.
Have a wonderful day Dusty, Marissa and little Brooke 🥰🤗🦬🦬🦬
It is so AWESOME Big Joe checks the calf and mamma to be sure that the both of them are his.😂 ❤🎉
It was so sweet to see Big Joe checking on his new baby and momma❤
Congrats on the new baby! I remember as a kid there was a big (in all ways) snapping turtle problem on my uncle's ranch. After they ran out of fish, they were grabbing ducklings and then coming out of the ponds for the chickens. My uncle and his sons cleaned out all the ponds - I think there were five, and three of those turtles were absolutely massive. Found out turtle was good eating!
Yes. Turtle meat is very good. Try a stew.
Hi Dusty, Marissa and Brooks. Big Joe is magnificent. They love their treats. Yall take great care of your bison. Love the new red dog congratulations. God bless and love yall ❤❤
For the pond i’m thinking dig it down a couple feet and i’d get rid of the turtle. Hopefully by increasing the depth and graveling around the perimeter would help. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Absolutely LOVE Marissa being the camera person. You two have a great and entertaining relationship. She is great with her commentary.
Marissa earned a large bouquet of flowers after this day, just saying
Ok
Marissa commentary is so direct and funny.
@@Motherhubbard170 Yes. I heard what you probably heard. Must not forget who/what is important when the two of them are working out there...
@@Motherhubbard170SPA DAY for Marissa.
Big Joe looked like he wanted to be sure it was his.
"Sniff... oh yeah, I remember her. ❤"
😂❤
Watching the calf next to Big Joe really shows how big Joe is.💪🙏
Marissa you made the video more entertaining. Your family are rocking it. ❤❤❤
"Getter done" comes to mind - you guys are fearless and doing a great job of caring for them!❤
It’s poured here in Norman today and big Thunder ❤so neededThank You Jesus !
Send it south!!
Love your videos and enjoy watching them. May the lord bless and protect you and your family and the bison and other animals and the homestead
You just got a new subscriber. Whenever I come across farming, it takes me down memory lane. Losing my farm to the hurricane Florence on September 2018 here in North Carolina dealth a huge jab. I got depressed, but an influx of $33k monthly made my family happy one more time
Great post friend
How do you get so much in that period of time???
💔💔💔that must have been heartbreaking for you to say the least, but thank God you've got smiles again
What's this about please?
Big thanks to Kathleen Mary Vella brokerage services
Look at Big Joe inspecting Surprise!
Aww, congratulations on you little surprise! Love seeing your Bison!
Congratulations. Love to see the red dog. Beautiful Eleanor. ❤🦬
A new Red dog is great anytime of the year. She still made it in the SUMMER!
Call the turtle guy back out !
Yep, 'turtle wrangler'!
Or just send it to the great beyond !
Yes, turtle guy returns. Can’t remember where he’s from.
For the pond i would dig it out deep on the side of that one and put a one or two row of that thick bar (for like chain link fence) (but the the chain part ) that way they can drink it but not get in it. But make it deep so it holds more water and drys up less
Hello 👋 Dusty and family, I lived in the U.P. Of Michigan and witnessed a common snapping turtle that had traveled several miles to escape a fire. It actually came to my house in a development, was obviously very dry and let me run water on it for a few hours and then left on it’s journey to Lake Superior which was only a half mile downhill from my house. As long as you have water within a mile or so of where the turtle is it will find water enough to live in. Thank you for sharing your journey with us and keep on Bison Ranching
Congratulations on the new red dog!!
I love seeing Bison coming back 💙. They are the true residents of this awesome country..! Bless you both for helping these beautiful creatures thrive.
Godspeed to you💙
Lovely to see the new baby. ❤
I love Marissa’s commentary, especially the fruit bearing limb! lol!
Hey Dusty! You be careful pulling away while half of Marissa’s body is out of the vehicle!!! I had a family member do that and the person fell and broke her hip and femur! LOTS of rehab and months of recovery! Please be aware and mindful. We don’t want anything happening to Marissa and I know you’d be devastated if that happened to Marissa. ❤
I’m glad someone else saw when Dusty took off before Marissa was in the truck. I thought that was a terrible thing to do. I came from a terrible abusive marriage and that really rubbed me the wrong way. You need to apologize Dusty!!
It looked too easy to forget who/what's important. She and he dodged a bullet here.
@@Tinker5051 I definitely don’t think he did it on purpose, but I could tell he didn’t think much of it like it was important to acknowledge. So I was just letting him be very aware of what can happen. I’m sorry you came from an abusive relationship. As we know, Dusty is a wonderful, caring, loving husband and father.
@@terrysandiego They sure did!!!
BRAVOOOO ABSOLUTELY SHOCKED HE BLEW IT OFF SERIOUSLY NOT COOL YOU OWE HER AN HUGE APOLOGY ACTING LIKE YOU DIDNT GIVE A TINKERS DAMN IS ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR GRATEFUL YOUR BEING CALLED OUT
Your bison herd is looking amazing! Very healthy and great coats.
Congratulations on late red dog 💓. Blessings 🙏🫶❤️🫶🙏
If the pond drys up, that turtle will travel a long way for another spot.
Hey, Dusty, family and Big Joe 😊😊
I love watching your channel and watching the red dogs grow. You teach us so much, I have learned so much from you. Thanks for sharing!!
Hey Big Joe 💜🦬
LOL Marisa, Take 2😂
Princess Eleanor 😘🦬💜
Ooooooooo a New Reddog 😍
Congratulations 🦬💜
Keep on Bison Ranchin!🙏🦬💜
I love the new baby! So sweet. I have been watching Daniel rebuild and expand his pond. It is so interesting. I really love how you and Daniel both talk to your animals.
Yay for late season Red Dogs! They are so darn cute to watch grow up. Even though you prefer spring Red Dogs, we love them year round. It was great seeing Princess Eleanor with a buddy! Big Joe is as fun as ever. Dusty, I would get a dozer or take your skid steer and dig out your dried up pond and make it deeper. It’s the perfect time to do it with it being bone dry on the edges. You won’t have to make it bigger in size, just deeper to hold more water for longer. Get rid of that snapping turtle! I think of it hurting one of the dogs, a red dog or one of you all. But now is the best time to dig out that pond!
In the future draughts could be longer periods of time. Enlarge the pond moderately and make it deeper.
Loved seeing the new red dog! Nice equipment, saves your backs!!🙏💜🙏
Dusty
You are doing a great job selling the Hyrdobed! I even want one, but I just have two cats 🐈⬛🐈⬛ !!! 😊😊😊
😊😊
HAHAHA!
The red dog is so pretty. Big Joe is a proud papa❤️🥰
I'm so loving your bison. Love how friendly big Joe is.❤❤
Dig it deeper all the way around the pond.
I was about to say the same thing. Go deeper, maybe even a foot or two wider all around as well.
Wouldn’t a tractor bucket do the job more easily? My Dad (TX) had a used Kuboda and he learned how to make it sit up and beg. No remotes to go kaput.
Wait till a dry season and dig the pond deeper; clay it if your soil is sandy. Doesn’t have to be a lot bigger, but deeper will evaporate more slowly. You might want to look into regenerative farming and put in some swales. Good luck!
Such a handsome healthy herd! Congrats on the red dog!💗🦬
Cool video, love to your family Dusty..😊😊
Congratulations
Oh my goodness!!!! A new baby - a true gift from God! I don't have a clue what to suggest for your pond - I don't even have an educated guess. The only thing I think is to consider if the herd has enough other places to get a drink in that pasture? If not, it seems to make sense to enlarge the pond and protect it from the herd using it as a toilet.
The snapper can burrow into the mud and wait for better rains. They do not ave to leave the pond in a dry season. Nor do they have to leave the pond in the winter (up north) when it freezes solid for the winter. They can quite literally hold their breath for months.
Bison are beautiful and a joy to see
You don't need a snapping turtle with that new baby. What a great surprise.❤❤❤
I love seeing Big Joe the first that comes to my mind every time is Big Joe and his Fabio hair!! lol I love what you guys are doing for the amazing American Bison!! Keep ranching!! Stay safe and may God bless you all!! ❤❤❤
Congratulations on new Red Dog. They sure love their sweet tubs 🥰. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. Blessings 🙏🫶❤️🫶🙏
Congratulations on the Red Dog. Hope you get the turtle situation under control.
It was exciting to see the baby red dog🤗🥰❕🍎🦋
Congratulations on the red dog!
Yup, gotta have those arms at the same level as the tub to get it to grip/lift correctly. Time to do some turtle hunting to get that big ol' bugger out of there. Congrats on the new red dog! Happy times right there. God bless you folks in what you do.
Cute how they are watching you like a dog. 😅
Call the turtle guys and have them come back for another round of pickups!!
Hey he'll I just love you all and all of your animals and Brooks is just Beautiful.
The gift that keeps on giving. Your herd!
Keep right on bison ranching Dusty, and Happy Trails to the whole family.
Aw, a new baby!❤
Thank you for sharing this beautiful 😍 news. Best wishes for the baby ❤❤
Hello Dusty and Marisa
I think you may want to get in touch with the turtle wrangler to get that beast of a snapping turtle out of the pond.
If you clean the bottom of the pond that dries out, that may help it. It surely won’t hurt it.
I think your bison are on their own schedules as far as red dogs go. 😂
Blessings ❤
~Linda
Thank you for preserving humanity's heritage! Be blessed!
Congratulations on the new calf!
In my opinion the turtle will find another pond. It'll migrate just like other water animals do. Congrats on the new red dog also. Thanks for sharing your adventures with us Dusty and family. 👍
I was thinking it may find another home as well
Love ya'll and the bison❤
Thank you😊
I hope that turtle makes it with the water disappearing... maybe call those guys and have them get it? or as you said, maybe it will travel to another pond. Maybe you can make the pond a lot deeper in the middle without making it a lot wider? I like the idea of having a way for them to drink the water from the pond without messing it up. That Hydrabed seems to be made super strong and hardy. Thanks for another fun video.
Thanks, how kool.
Call those men back and let them come and get that turtle. I love seeing Big Joe!
In the old days we drilled a well in the dry pond & put in a windmill to pump. The windmill run by wind needs no other thing unless you are also at same time as pumping harvesting electricity as many have learned to do from the huge turbine repair guys. I hear it is easy alteration.
You can get a dump box for ya hydrabed and dump gravel on pond edge. Id just desilt it and put in ramp like you said.
Good idea!
Way to go big Joe Congratulations cute red dog 👏🏻❤️
My uncle used cinder blocks and old bricks to make his creek crossing in his field thru the creek and helped with little dam to make a small pool to hold some water.
DUSTY and Marissa, congratulations on your new "Red Dog ". I would call your friends to come back and get that turtle. Hope you get some rain really soon. 🚜🚜⛈⛈⛈⛈👍👍❤❤❤. David B.,Utah.
Make the pond larger, add a device to agitate the water surface, add aquatic, and emergent plants, like pickerel weed, lizard tail, water lilies, Do make it deeper and add some gravel to certain areas of the pond, make it a permanent fixture
Call your turtle guy to come trap that turtle and more turtles, (you said before when he was there that you think there’s plenty more turtles), at the other ponds.
Congratulations on the new baby Dusty.❤
Call the turtle guy to come back out to get the last snapping turtle.
Make it deeper? Deeper water stays colder.
Ahh big joe is a daddy again!!!! what a stud and lady's love him😊❤
Love that Big Joe introduced himself to his offspring.😊❤❤❤🎉
Rescue the turtle. That is good stewardship too.
So tiny and how big they grow.Blessing your family.
Congratulations on your new calf
New life on the ranch! That’s awesome!
Hey Big Joe. Tell Dusty not to get in such a hurry, you’re not going anywhere. 😊
Regarding the pond, what about making it deeper but smaller in circumference to decrease evaporation, and then using shade balls on top to decrease the evaporation even more and cut down on the algae growth?
I’m in England and just discovered your channel! This is fascinating….❤
That was a great surprise ❤ I love to watch them!
Congratulations on the new red dog...you should name her/him TEMBER since shim was born in September!
Just a thought ...thanks for all your videos and for being so kind to the bison ❤❤❤❤
Hi Dusty and Big Joe❤❤❤❤❤
Great video, Dusty and family🎉🎉🎉🎉. Congrats to the baby❤❤. Deeper, so you will have more water when you have a drought.😢😮
Some rain tarps that funnel into the pond and the gravel bed sounds good. Have you thought of putting anything under that gravel like tarps or what they use in pools? I know they use something in the two man made lakes here beyond the Merritt.
Can hold the water in so it doesn't seep into the dry soil.
Eleanor!!
❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Congratulations on the new little red dog ❤
The struggles are real. How far do turtles travel - to find water. Is Big Joe checking out his baby? Stay safe & take care of you all. Thanks for sharing, eh :))
I have to say I love the relationship you have as a family.
