- At the 2024 edition of Broadway Backwards, two of Broadway’s most iconic leading men, Tony winner Len Cariou (Broadway’s original Sweeney Todd and TV’s Blue Bloods) and Chip Zien (Harmony, Into the Woods), exchanged not just a pineapple but a charming duet with “It Couldn’t Please Me More” from Cabaret.
Broadway Backwards was directed, written and choreographed by Robert Bartley, Backwards' creator.
A brilliant string of 11-o’clock numbers, standing ovations and LGBTQ+ joy reverberated through the historic walls at Broadway's New Amsterdam Theatre on March 11, 2024, when Tony Award winners, Broadway legends and newcomers alike spectacularly shared LGBTQ+ stories through show tunes at Broadway Backwards.
The show raised a record $917,651 to benefit Broadway Cares/Equity Fights AIDS and The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual & Transgender Community Center (The Center) in New York City. The one-night-only, annual event is produced by Broadway Cares.
The elevated evening of love, community and unparalleled performances is the only annual Broadway event custom-made for the LGBTQ+ community and its allies. By taking familiar songs in the Broadway canon and transforming them into queer anthems, lighthearted romps and emotional ballads, Broadway Backwards tells stories that deserve to be told onstage.

Who knew that what this world needed was a love song between Sweeney Todd and The Baker. From Sondheim to Cabaret!!
And I remember Len from “ A Little Night Music”.
What we need is a chamber musical about an elderly gay couple starring Chip & Len. That would be “Heavenly”
New La Cage?
These two are legends and this makes me so happy! Thanks to all involved!
I didn't know who Chip was (I didn't read the description... saw Len Cariou and just clicked). Part way through whatever lyric he sang, I yelled, "THAT'S THE BAKER!!!!" I used to listen to Into the Woods and had the show on VHS... but never knew his name. So good!
So sweet and beautiful. And what an honor to see those two performing together.
True talents! Thanks for all the years of brilliant performances, and for caring.
Someone chopping onions? How exquisite.
Two great Broadway veterans. Thank you. And for a good cause.
omg what a show-stopping duo!!! i love old men singing love songs together
I am DECEASED. I have just expired from adorable. Bless them both
What a lovely performance! Listening to those "backwards" versions always give me so much joy, thank you for sharing!
This is so precious and wholesome. With how crazy the world has been the last few years, we need more entertainment like this.
Aw...this made me cry, so good! So heartwarming!😅
The most heartwarming moment in _Cabaret_ . I was so fortunate to hear and watch Lotte Lenya and Jack Gilford play the scene in New York. That was 57 years ago. The song is both gushing with romance and blessed with funny lines. "That might be nice, but, frankly, it would give me gas."
I was hoping so much that this would be posted (and thinking it unlikely because others of Mr. Cariou's tragically haven't been) that when I saw the link I shouted so loudly for joy that I had to explain what had happened to my roommate :D thank you!
Stunning, simply stunning !
This made me cry happy tears. I love Broadway Backwards.
❤❤❤
Sooo adorable! My 9 year old self is so happy to see them both together ❤
This couldn't please me more 😍
I love it. They are simply great. 😊🎉
Absolutely fabulously beautiful ❤️
Goddammit who's chopping onions in here
I couldn't love this more.
This is the most important thing to me
loved this performance!! :D
Brilliant!!!
Honestly now I’d love to see Chip as Herr Schultz!
Love it!
Perfection
A lesson in delivery....you don't have to always belt and scream notes to get people to cheer
Charming! All that needs to be added is a credit for the composer/lyricist team of John Kander and the late Fred Ebb. 🙂
There is a credit for them right at the beginning of the video.
@@tallactordude My apologies... 🙂
