I was just thinking the same thing! When "Maggie" says, "I would love too..." at the end, tears welled up. The song, is always wonderful and these guys were great!
I have loved this song for 35 years but never imagined it being performed by three guys! I loved it. The second guy was cute, charming and understood what he what singing better than any actress I have seen.
"Different is nice, but it sure isn't pretty/ Pretty is what it's about/ I never met anyone who was different who couldn't figure that out/" Those lines sound even more heartbreaking coming from a gay man.
William Craig I'm sorry, I must've missed the part where being homosexual now means wearing clothing and singing a song. I thought it meant you liked your own gender, or even that it meant you're happy. Silly me thinking that.
Musical theater is a major part of the gay community, and this song's lyrics are all completely changed by the fact that a man is singing it. It's pretty obvious they're making a statement, and not just 'singing a song.'
William Craig Doesn't mean they have to be gay. Look at me; I'm straight and like musical theatre :/ They do this for plenty of things. Cellblock tango for example. You're reading into what has not been said. They show this much passion for everything. Until there's *actual* evidence of their homosexuality (like, say, maybe them kissing a boy or confessing their love for the same sex?), I don't think you should presume they are because of a song and clothes. I wear my brothers' clothes and don't change song lyrics so I may end up singing about a girl. Am I lesbian >.>?
This song gets a whole new dimension when performed by gay men, suddenly the lyrics become the struggle of gays in this world, to belong, to be part of it. The emotions listening to this men singing with so much truth and with feelings that come from their personal paths and struggles in life are overwhelming.
Every human struggles in their life, & regardless of their sexual preference. I'm gay, it wasn't overwhelming. It's some straight people who are overwhelmed by it all, struggling with their homophobia. That's how I see it. I am a Stonewall baby boomer.
Magnificent. I always liked this song, but never really connected. This rendition brought tears to my eyes. Each time the audience laughed, I cried from recognition. For once, I am seen. Thank you.
The beauty of these things comes from the honesty of not giving in to the cheap laugh of camping it up (look at the guy who sings AND I AM TELLING YOU - flawless!). The middle guy here almost gives in to that urge to just play it for cheap laughs, but happily resists. The result is much better (and comical) for that. The second guy should learn to count. The first guy is brilliant.
Remarkable, I'm in tears! This committed delivery knocked me out and the voices are as amazing as the men are beautiful. I love Blake Bowden's full and rich high notes that are delivered from deep within him. This song when performed by women is often a rote exercise. This was fresh and effective.
There’s a lovely balance here. The song, a trio for three female voices, will always be an emotionally charged recall of unhappy childhoods relieved by the escapism offered by ballet and its repertoire of happy endings. Performed instead by men, it would be easy for the trio to tip into a sad reflection of young gay boys struggling with both their emerging identity and their liking for what is often regarded as a girlish and girl-dominated activity. But the pantomime humour of men in drag manages to stave off the worst of the maudlinness and I appreciate Blake Bowden trying to keep the final “Daddy, I would love to dance” from being the tear-jerker the writers intended to be. One poster here takes the irony one step further and reflects on how it is even harder (or heartbreaking, as he called it) for an unattractive gay youth to fit in and find love, alluding perhaps to today’s widespread image consciousness amongst the young, and how a gay “plain jack”-looking boy finds it even harder to be gay, a dancer and happy at the same time.
Gender-bent songs have a habit of doing that. I sang Fifty Percent for an audition once and the director said, "That song has such a different meaning when it''s sung by a man!" (and yes, I got the job! :D )
First at all, I love this song, ir was one of my firsts musicals, even I had a boyfriend of the cast (Bobby) It was a long time ago. And now I watch this performance, one tear drop of my eye. For me was amazing!!!! Who played Maggie has an incredible voice. It dosen´t matter if they are gay or straight, the feelings they transmitted was the really important.
Breaks my composure and makes me cry every time. Too much to identify with here and too connected to the era in which this was created. Now with men in the three roles i am more heavily impacted than I had expected. Simply beautiful tragedy if i may be so "French" in my review. It seems contradictory but it more accurately Point/Counterpoint in music, lyrics and a minimalistic bit of elegant dance.
My all time favorite Broadway scene!! I saw A Chorus Line 41 years ago on Broadway....it was the beginning of a lifetime of love for musical theater. You guys are awesome!! Way to hold that note Maggie!! Sending warm regards from Kentucky!!!
I love the twist of changing the gender references in a well known song. It brings an entirely different meaning to the song and what it means. Astonishing. Brilliant.
Sheila: Daddy always thought that he married beneath him That's what he said, that's what he said When he proposed he informed my mother He was probably her very last chance And though she was twenty-two Though she was twenty-two Though she was twenty-two She married him Life with my dad wasn't ever a picnic More like a "come as you are." When I was five I remember my mother Dug earrings out of the car I knew they weren't hers, but it wasn't Something you'd want to discuss He wasn't warm Well, not to her Well, not to us But everything was beautiful at the ballet Graceful men lift lovely girls in white Yes, everything was beautiful at ballet Hey! I mean, I was born to save their marriage but when my father came to pick my mother up at the hospital he said: "Well, I thought this was going to help. But I guess it's not." Anyway, I did have a fantastic fantasy life. I used to dance around the living room with my arms up like this. My fantasy was that it was an Indian Chief... And he'd say to me, "Maggie, do you wanna dance?" And I'd say, "Daddy, I would love to dance." Bebe: But it was clear Sheila: When he proposed Maggie: That I was born to help their marriage and when Sheila: That's what he said Bebe: That's what she said Maggie: I used to dance around the living room Sheila: He wasn't warm Bebe: Not to her Maggie: It was an Indian chief and he'd say "Maggie, do you wanna dance?" Great. There is also a version of the trio gotham doing this on RUclips. If you never saw them, you missed one of the best acts ever in the clubs of New York in the 70s and 80s. Only the divine miss m was equal.
Wow, I've never heard of Twisted Broadway, prior to this video. What are the names of those three fellows? Awesomely talented group! That high note from "At The Ballet" was incredible!
Everyone's laughing and I am over here so *moved.* This song, no matter who performs it, will always get me.
Gabrielle Carolina Me too!
I know!!!! I’m like stop laughing!
I was just thinking the same thing! When "Maggie" says, "I would love too..." at the end, tears welled up. The song, is always wonderful and these guys were great!
Gabrielle Carolina same this song is really emotional to me
totally agree - i am like is anyone listening to the lyric?? This song isn't gender specific - its heartbreaking. And they sang the shit outta it.
I've watched this so many times...they are perfect. They are EVERYTHING.
I have loved this song for 35 years but never imagined it being performed by three guys! I loved it. The second guy was cute, charming and understood what he what singing better than any actress I have seen.
how old are you
@@isaacmulisa I'm 88
How did the guy in the middle hold his arms up for so long
Proberly because he is a dancer... crazy styr with the body is what they do.
Because he's a real man. ; )
Talent
mullumbimboy same difference
Do you see those guns? Solid steel is rather strong. Lol
"Different is nice, but it sure isn't pretty/ Pretty is what it's about/ I never met anyone who was different who couldn't figure that out/"
Those lines sound even more heartbreaking coming from a gay man.
William Craig They're gay?
They're men in tutus singing show tunes traditionally sung by women.
You figure it out.
William Craig I'm sorry, I must've missed the part where being homosexual now means wearing clothing and singing a song.
I thought it meant you liked your own gender, or even that it meant you're happy. Silly me thinking that.

+Mario Slim yes thanks for understanding the concept - si gracias por entender el concepto.
Yea
Every human struggles in their life, & regardless of their sexual preference. I'm gay, it wasn't overwhelming. It's some straight people who are overwhelmed by it all, struggling with their homophobia. That's how I see it. I am a Stonewall baby boomer.
Maybe they never struggled. It’s not that now every gay person need to struggle. I didn’t for example…
How do you know they’re all gay?
Magnificent. I always liked this song, but never really connected. This rendition brought tears to my eyes. Each time the audience laughed, I cried from recognition. For once, I am seen. Thank you.
That was so good, and so sad at the same time
First guy is absolutely stunning, wow!
and the middle guy, what a voice!
They always make me cry. Every time I watch this clip. So beyond beautiful.
That “Daddy” lives rent-free in my head. 🤣🤣🤣 I can’t listen to that song anymore because it is etched in my memory! 🤣🤣🤣
Beautiful!!! The Swan Lake chorus moment - who DOESN'T want to do that? These men's voices, these bodies... just wow.
Hands down the best version I have ever heard.
This was beautifully done by men...it touched my heart in more ways than one...at the ballet...
Every time, I watch this video, I cry. These Guys are so Amazing and it is Wonderful. Thank you so much. Mark R. Urick
love this song and hearing it performed by men just takes to a different level perspective. It is performed amazingly
Blake Bowden knocked my socks off! !! He’s sensational as “Maggie”. ❤️❤️❤️ Thanks for sharing.
Beautiful moving song sung by beautiful souls.
The first guy's arms are INCREDIBLE! Jeez!
wow, hysterical… between the laughter, i began to get teary eared, and by the end, I am in tears… bravo
Who needs elaborate production value & costuming?
When you have these incredibly talented young artists??!! ❤❤❤ 👍👍👍!!!
Great! Really enjoy Blake Bowden's (Maggie's) voice!
The beauty of these things comes from the honesty of not giving in to the cheap laugh of camping it up (look at the guy who sings AND I AM TELLING YOU - flawless!). The first guy is brilliant.
One of the saddest Broadway songs ever performed. It’ll always hold a different emotion for each person who hears it.
That was beautiful. I loved every second of it. I' always filled with glee whenever I see a Twisted Broadway video.
i don't know who Maggie was but that voice of his is amazing he nailed his role i have to say a big well dun to all 3 of u what a fab song
Remarkable, I'm in tears! This committed delivery knocked me out and the voices are as amazing as the men are beautiful. I love Blake Bowden's full and rich high notes that are delivered from deep within him. This song when performed by women is often a rote exercise. This was fresh and effective.
One of my favourite songs from *A Chorus Line* This version had its moments.
I've laughed at so many of the Twisted Broadway songs... this one.... I am choked up... wow
Honestly thought that was Steve-O at the left for a second, but this was seriously one of the best performances of this song I've found on RUclips.
As a gay guy who grew up in dance and theatre this really speaks to me, I wish they played it serious
i think they did
Kyle Shanebeck I think they did as well- there’s not really a hint of try to overplay this to me at all..
what's not serious abt it
I agree Kyle
I think that they tried.
As a gay man who was out before Stonewall I am moved to tears by this and so happy that so many will be able to see it who need to gay or straight
Wonderful talented guys!

I think what makes it work so well is that the actors/singers played this with absolute conviction--not with a wink or hint of camp.
Gender-bent songs have a habit of doing that. I sang Fifty Percent for an audition once and the director said, "That song has such a different meaning when it''s sung by a man!"

heartbreakingly beautiful

All 3 are fantastic singers. I'd like to hear Mathew Holly sing I dreamed a dream.
These men can REALLY sing!!!!!
I have always related to this song from my first exposure to A Chorus Line in the 1970s. (yeah I know just dated myself)
how old are you!!!!!
That was so great. Such talent and funny too!
Love this......
💔
Beautiful interpretation of this song enjoyable to watch xxx

Okay. So, like, I'm crying.
Fantastic. Just beautiful. All the singing especially the last guy with the long belted note at the end.
Yeah, I'm not laughing. I feel as bad as I always I do when I hear this song.
lisa schroder I went to see this at Stratford a few years ago and was shocked at what a depressing play it is. I had forgotten
3:00 was nice, lovely harmonizing.
SOMEONE TELL ME HE HITS THE NOTE AT THE END
3 years late but he does
That B4, though!! :D
Excellent!
Sheila:

If not to her
Well then to me

Thank you Mecko21, we're glad you liked it!

+mzmiller52 gotham performs at the 1989 MAC Awards on you tube. Is fantastic, but pure comedy
Maggie saying daddy is my new life force
For me it was the piano bench, not the ballet. But even now this makes me cry.
