Fun fact that has probably already been mentioned: Given that fresh produce was being heavily rationed, a pineapple would be a pretty epic gift to receive. The "fill your entire room with pineapples" line would be like saying he would fill her entire room with diamonds.
It just shows the power of the theatre that someone is able to do this. I mean, it was a risky move... a guy, saying nothing and just staring at the audience while a record played. I know it was only for a few minutes, but people may have got bored. And yet they're fixated, the horror rising within them and reaching it's ugly end sequence with his words. Completely chilling, complete genius.
Deadass the face that the emcee makes during the scene with him and the radio makes me cry on the spot if I start thinking too hard about it. Saw a local KC production the other day, and the dude in that show absolutely nailed it too. Guess it's just universal etiquette of playing the emcee, you've got to get those intricate, disassociating facial expressions to fit the part.
right_hand_pan nearly all current productions in the world are based on this one, and not earlier (original) version. Emcee, as reinvented and played here by Alan Cumming has become THE Emcee - a staple, etalon version/vision of the character. Every subsequent performer who takes on this role ultimately attempts to copy/recreate Alan's performance, hence the similarities.
one thing i love that is noticeable in this close camerawork is that the emcee always has some bruises and cuts. i think it’s very revealing to his character.
Fraulein Schneider and Herr Schultz are such a sweet couple. :) I especially love these actors portraying them. And Alan...well, he's always lovely...and hot. :P Thanks for posting; this version of Cabaret is wonderful.
Did the Emcee really NEED to show up in this scene as a rhetorical device of any sort? No. Did his presence help to further the narrative in absolutely any way by being there? No. Could one argue that it detracted from the love story playing out in front of us, rather than further that subplot? Yes. Should his presence in this scene then, arguably, be reconsidered? Absolutely not, and you should be ashamed for even daring to entertain the notion.
@ 04:51 He comes out and plays the song: Tomorrow Belongs To Me That song still gives me the chills. It's pretty and hard to get out of your head once you hear it but it's become associated with hate groups now in real life who as of 2017 have taken this song and is now sung in White Supremacist groups and among Neo Nazis in the U K and elsewhere. How ironic that they sing this song not aware that this song was written by TWO Gay Jewish Men , John Kander and Fred Ebb who get the last laugh now when this is sung by bigots, racists and haters. The bigoted singer Anita Bryant whom hates gay people also covered this song as well. LOL
@Honk Honk I'd ask you who gives a fuck like you asked The Jupiter, but that would lower me to your level. The fact is, your comment makes you come across as a troll.
@jupiter2574 in 2023 the song is especially chilling now with so much hate in the world still directed toward the LGBT community. Cabaret is more relevant than ever, sadly, and should serve as a warning about what we must never allow again..
@luckylover91 It's supposed to represent an anthem for the rising Nazi party during the show. The song is played to emphasize that they're growing and coming to power, which is why the Emcee looks disappointed and a little scared while it's playing up until the last part when he actually speaks. It's a beautiful song, but it has an evil and ugly undertone to it. I hope this helped. :)
The discipline Alan has as an actor. This is different from the original play. It's closer to the movie....a group of men sing it but at the Kit Kat Club.
I have looked all through the Cabaret videos and cannot find the performances of "Maybe This Time" or "Money" . Did RUclips force these songs edited out, copyright or something? My two favorite performances are missing....:(
+Katitzi - hmmm, possibly, but I don't think the movie changed the play's original musical score. Besides, I did just see a Cabaret performance, Broadway at Hobby Center Houston on 3/26/16, it's part of a USA wide tour (the Roundabout Theatre Co., originally directed by Sam Mendes). And, this production was almost identical to the Broadway version I saw at Studio 54 back in 2002. The two songs in question were performed live in both shows, and are very big hits spawned from John Kander and Fred Ebb (composer and lyricist). Therefore, due to these songs' popularity, I thought possibly copyright infringement explained their absence rather than a production excluding two very big hits, which I just witnessed in the musical. Yet, thank you for your suggestion.
@@MBM1117727 money, don't tell mamma and mabey this time were originally in this they were cut because this was a TV broadcast and they cut it for running time
Does anyone know where I can find a copy of the scene at the end of this section with sally announcing that she is pregnant? I can't seem to find it anywhere, thanks in advance!
Amazon credits Alex Bowen with singing Tomorrow Belongs To Me on the 1998 Broadway Revival CD. The boy soprano on this is clearly not the same as the American child on the Broadway Revival CD. Does anyone know the correct credits??? Thx
Can somebody explain to me the interaction between Fraulein Kost and Herr Schultz after the musical number? I get that Schultz is trying to make up an excuse for what he's doing in the building, but I don't understand what Kost's "2 marks" remark means or why it makes him uncomfortable. Can somebody explain?
I think it means that she wants to “solicit” him if you will. If you already knew, Fraulein Kost is a prostitute who lives in Fraulein Schneider’s boarding house, much to her dismay. She only stays because she pays rent to Fraulein Schneider and losing a boarder would make it harder for her, so she doesn’t.
Pleasesomebody tell me ... what is the meaning of "looking for 2 marks"? i know this was the german currency but why was she looking for 2 marks was it the reward for turning in a jew?
Before the song starts, Fraulein Schneider says that the pineapple is rare and expensive, so I think they're singing about it because pineapples were hard to find, let alone acquire, during that time because of the war, which makes the gift all the more meaningful.
In that time period due to the lack of modern technologies it was very hard to transport tropical fruits like a pineapple to places like Germany so it was an extremely kind gift
I'm new to "Cabaret," having just seen the Liza Minelli version on TV last weekend. So far I prefer this stage version, but "Tomorrow Belongs to Me" is the exception. Without knowing beforehand what that song is about, I'd have no idea what the point of that scene was. And either way, it's nowhere near as powerful as the movie version. BUT, this play ones the movie up with its ending, by infinity.
Fun fact that has probably already been mentioned: Given that fresh produce was being heavily rationed, a pineapple would be a pretty epic gift to receive. The "fill your entire room with pineapples" line would be like saying he would fill her entire room with diamonds.
I love how Emcee always comes out of nowhere.
Yes yes, the pineapple song was cute, but I could only focus on the fact that Alan held that plie for a really long time, that shit is impressive.
damn straight
he's in a full squat, little easier
@em8842, definitely impressive..and his facial expressions speak volumes

stop the search! the cutest love song ever has been found! and it's includes a pineapple
She's overwhelmed it's just so freaking cute 😂
2:42 three part harmony is one of the great additions to this revival. 1998 revival made the emcee into a formed character. It's great.
Book of Mormon
Truly a beautiful addition

I was trying to figure out if he has more each scene or if I’m just noticing more each scene
I just love how the Master of Ceremonies pops in and out of scenes! This is such a marvelous show!
Damn. Alan Cumming's has extremely muscular legs. Like his character would say, "So, HOT!"
"If this were a movie you know what would happen? A tidal wave, or a volcano would erupt."
I mean.
You're close.
thats like the whole point of that line haha

Perfectly stated!
he sells fruit, pineapples were expensive at the time so it's an extravagant gift, that's about all really
Beware of premarital pineapple gifting
THE BASS SECTION. Oh god, do I hear a TUBA? In a stage production of ANY show? AND A BARISAX, WHAT AM I, IN HEAVEN
Alan Cummings is simply a beautiful person and i just can't get enough of him! :D
Cliff and Sally are supposed to be polar opposites, therefore this Cliff is perfect.
Better than Romeo and Juliet, involving a pineapple

Such a beautiful song for such a small and lovely gesture. It haunts me.
Cabaret: Cliff's Bi Awakening
I think the said earlier she grew up by the sea, so it's my opinion that the pineapple reminds her of tropical areas which she might favor.
Waiting 56 years to finaly see this perfect creation. Thank you very much.
@shadowkid379 I love the show so far, but in the original staging, the male chorus exposing their armbands was really effective, very chilling.
Yo this video has the most blueballsing ending I’ve ever seen
Does the lips mean they censored something or more like indicating next act?
I think this was broadcast on tv and the lips are commercial break
My uncle was the guy who gave the pineapple to that girl! so for christmas we're getting him a pineapple! haa shhhx
God Herr Schultz and Fraulein Schneider are such a sweet couple 😭
is it just me or does Alan look like L from Death Note in the record part
They should have kept "Why Should I Wake Up". Not only is that probably the most heartfelt song in the show, but it's Cliff's only major solo number.
@jestanotherguy I think she's propositioning him, actually. As in "I'm looking for 2 marks....that's what it costs to sleep with me."
Beautiful interpretation. Lotte Lenya would approve. However, her interpretation is the best. Alan Cummings adds something special to this production
