What a treat for us, the premier engine designer/builder in the USA sharing his tips and techniques. It doesn't get better than this for learning. Thanks Steve!
We really are in a golden age of accessible information, where experts like Steve share their hard-won knowledge in an understandable format. It is easy to forget how lucky we are.

I can’t believe we get all your information without paying! Thank you Steve! Best information from the Premier engine builder, to get you to the best times on the track!
Steve Morris and Tom Nelson are some of my favorite engine builders. Not only are they always trying to improve their craft. They take care of their customers and seem to want to help figure out any problems. I just wish Tom still did his youtube videos. If you've never watched Tom Nelson on NRERUclips of his builds and street tests, I highly recommend it.
When was the last time you saw NRE do anything? His engines are nowhere to be found, next to nobody runs his Turbonetics mirror copy turbos, and if you look at the various forums, he is not exactly popular. If Tom Nelson was not a friend of Dave Freiburger, I doubt he had ever gotten so much publicity in Hot Rod. Steve’s engines are out there and he actually develops his own stuff. Tom Nelson is so full of himself and the industry has grown tired of him.
@@AB-80X As an obvious Karen you've done some quick Google searches. Lots of people in Cali run his stuff. I knew of him way before your lispy friend David F was around. Both men build bad ass engines and they take a beating. Ive actually heard way more crap talked about Steve Morris than Tom. Mostly by haters who can't afford good equipment,, and negative Nancy's like yourself..Both great engine builders and both great people. He's actually doing powerplants for a few big names as we speak. Its obvious you speak from Google and like to stir another cooks pot and call it your beef. Ive met both men and have had great experiences with both their products. Its very telling that you took the time to try to bring negativity to someone's opinion. I bet your family is thrilled seeing you pull up for holidays. Unlike them, I can block you.
Such great information. Very big of you, Mr. Steve, to take us through this. Folks these days charge a premium just for rudementary stuff. Rightfully so, I admit. But you putting this out there is greatly appreciated! Love your channel & am always looking forward to the next vid. Thank you, sir!
That’s awesome how the bell made that much difference way I’d not believe it without seeing it thanks for sharing buddy always a great video so much knowledge pouring from you wish I could soak up more of it and use it on a project lol

Thank you for the time and effort you put into your videos.I live in a country that doesn't have much exposure to American v8s so it's always interesting to see how badass they can be.
Absolutely great info Steve, for a guy changing from a locked up no data ECU/PM Stocker built in the 80's to a Holley system soon, ty. Absolutely will make the change now. Tired of attempting to trick it, would rather work with EFI, get it to within 10 percent, and just tweak a few, no wonder the big bracket money racers are all now so dang close on both the tree and the et's, concentration on driving now, and less on the actual keeping the car running, less parts damage, more close race parity since 90 percent is done on the engine dyno after the build. Thanks.
To prevent mistakenly “burning up the motor” if/when you forget to clear static timing...set static timing no higher than 15-20 degrees...it should still idle and rev well enough to ensure your engine trigger is synchronized with your ECU (if it won’t, either your timing is way off or you AF is)...but 20 degrees probably won’t blow your engine (high-high boost via piston delete button engagement notwithstanding)...the engine will run like a pile of Dewey’s poop off the line likely reminding you of you “doh, forgot to clear static timing” mistake...I also recommend displaying timing on your digital dash or Sniper display...if the timing isn’t “jumping all around” when you free-rev (rev and do an eyeball check of timing in the staging lanes *before* pulling into the water/burnout box...if the timing is stuck on one number-especially your static timing number...clear it quick before your burnout...
What a fantastic video! That's a cool combo as well 👌🏻. I had no clue about the rev limiter and the data log initiation parameters. Also, the timing retard after the trans break is released functions different from what I thought. I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the drive shaft curves. Probably re watch the wagon track videos again with a new perspective. Thanks!🤘🏻
Makes me love the spring, air door, jets and metering rods on my Quadrajet. 😁 Once tuned, you don't touch it for 30,000 miles. Man how tuning has changed. Impressive technology and impressive schooling..... Meaning Steve Tech. How many years ago was it where a Mallory dual point dizzy became the high tech 'must have' addition that everyone wanted?
Until you change elevation. The quad was an amazing carb one tuned correctly. By 50k it's too worn out to function correctly and needs the rods bushed or replaced entirely. EFI is crazy, that you can run something for 300k with nothing but oil and spark plugs, or you can run it to the ragged edge on every cylinder for a few years worth of passes. Carbs are scary when you see individual cylinder o2 readings. 15:1 on 2 can still read 12.5:1 across the board since 2 can be 9:1. Melting 1 piston when 6 were safe is dumb.
Just adding that the Static Timing setting clears itself if/when the ignition is turned off (USB goes Offline as well) so you don't need to clear static timing in the software if you know your going to turn the ign. off...
What a great video you just helped me more than you can understand I been fighting the car and I know what to do know One being getting out of my own way but I digress
Simply the best content and advice. Love everything you share with us Steve!! One thing I would ask of you is to source a better sounding microphone. You sound muffled and shrill when you raise your voice.
Screen desync Steve... The refresh rate of the monitor is too close to the screen capture frame rate of your camera without being identical. Also some moire in the middle of the image where the pixels are just almost, but not totally lined up.
Do they need to make a separate class in ProMods for Nitrous cars vs Boosted cars? because the maximum a nitrous engine could ever make is 2800 horsepower vs pushing over 5000 for some turbo cars
It was pure stupidity to go that quick in a car with brakes that are over 20 years old. No bleeding no testing no nothing that was his fault for crashing the car
So the static timing If I understand it right For example..When you first set it up, you set engine timing on damper for 30°. You go into holley program and set static for 30°,. Then once you set it you can clear it out and go in and set up start up ignition timing for 15° Then once engine starts the holley goes back to the static of 30° and it pulls timings off the 30° static?

Love that he's showing us the Ins and outs of these complex toys.
And to think that 30 years ago we did all of this with 5 senses, a timing light, and a screwdriver.... How did we ever survive childhood? Lol.
We survived because we weren’t half as fast lol
30 years ago cars weren't running 5s then driving down the highway to the next track to do it again.
I gotta say, my 400 hp Nova with 4 wheel drum brakes sure felt fast! Haha
My question is about how much does it cost for the Holly and the needed sensors to get started with this system?

So is there anything you have to do to start the data log? Or will the Holley setup always be data logging and you can just look at it when you need?
