There were 4 of these at Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix this year. Red, Black, Dark Blue, and a Silver/Gray with a whipple supercharger. Pretty cool to see 4 in one place.
Hey Doug, These special doors have a historical background in relation to Le Mans: as soon as the race started, the drivers who had been standing at the starting area until then had to run across the track to their cars. Here Ford's innovative door design helped the drivers to get in faster. However, this traditional start was abolished after Ford's 4th Le Mans victory in 1969. Here‘s a little digression as to why this start no longer exists in this form today, I hope it helps: At the same time (1969), Ford driver Jacky Ickx, protested against this type of race start, in that he and his team-mate Jackie Oliver only "walked" slowly to the car and did not run, as they considered this relay start to be too dangerous. They were also to be proved right, British amateur driver John Woolfe, who was driving the only privately entered 917, had a fatal accident. In addition, debris from the car hit Amon's Ferrari, among others. Apart from the original idea of being able to get into the car more quickly, it is a beautiful reminisce of Ford's 4 victories at the time and is still something very special. It‘s a thoroughly iconic car which certainly has its "quirks and features" but that's what makes the car so lovable and desirable! PS Another benefit could be that there is more headroom for people wearing helmets (I think I saw once that the roof provides more headroom over the driver and passenger seats, but I'm not sure about this) Thank you for showing us this timeless masterpiece!
Doug, such a great iconic car. I have a client that bought the original prototype test rack car that was used to develop these. It is signed by Carol Shelby and all of the crew that worked on it. I had heard rumours of a non street legal Ford that this guy had bought, but know you could really tell me what it was. Then one day when I was down doing some work on his property, I asked what this mysterious car was. They took me to the detail bay that they have, and when the hydraulically controlled carriage doors opened, there it was. I couldn’t believe it. So incredible.
The “little flap” Doug talks about near the end is a Gurney Flap and they are very commonly placed on the end of spoilers, especially in racing. Ironically enough the Gurney Flap is named after (and invented by) racer Dan Gurney, who was one of the drivers who raced in the GT40 at various events including Le Mans.
The "bubble" in the roof part of the door (@ 8:59) was also added only to the GT40's that Dan Gurney drove because he was HUGE for a racecar driver at 6'4", plus helmet. It's the Gurney Bubble that goes with the Gurney Flap.
You make a good point at the end. Buying a car because it is rated very high versus rating a car very high because you have bought it. A bunch of people fail to differentiate.
This car is so iconic. Just such an amazingly cool look to it. I remember using this car in racing games back in the day and I was always like WHAT IS THAT THING
I saw a Heritage Edition model a couple of weeks ago (had the number 8 on it). It is easily the coolest and rarest American car I've ever seen, and 4th rarest I've seen overall.
God that livery is. astounding. No other word for it tbh. No offense to your GT, Doug, but that darkish blue (which looks darker than ford blue?) with white stripes looks like a 2005 mustang. This is just so clean and sharp and it so clearly takes from the old Shelbys and even 50s/60s track Porsches.
I've always liked your format. It's simple and works as easy watching. But I think you should start including the owners in your drive more often, especially if it's owned by someone interesting.
It is one of my all time favorite super cars also… just so awesome. The Hennessy Venom GT used the six speed gearbox out of this car. I believe it was built by Ricardo. Not sure if they modify it in any way to beef it up to handle the 1000hp in that car but I’ve heard them say that it is an excellent gearbox.
Well done Doug…I adore mine and would never sell it. Would add that the pad leading to the shifter often notches your elbow which isnt the best design. You called out the doors which while cool to show someone, are a pain to actually get in and out of. Add racing headers, if you get lucky and can find a pair, and the exhaust note is sublime. Best exotic car.
There was a missed opportunity to connect this to the race car. The little aerodynamic device on the back that reduces lift is called a Gurney flap after the race driver Dan Gurney, who developed it. And, he won Le Mans in the car. Furthermore, the bubble in the roof was there for him as he was over 6ft tall!

That little flap on the rear deck is called a gurney flap and you can see it on a lot of racing cars. You can even see it on many current F1 cars' rear spoiler.
He didn't used to do that, but has been since a year or two. Makes me wonder that that's why he also redoes some of the same cars, because maybe he showed full keys in those videos. Aside from them being for sale on C&B.
I spotted one selling in Brazil with lambo doors. They made it way more practical due to their shape. It should have been a factory feature from the beginning.
the nice part of having other ford parts is if something breaks you just buy the replacement for 5 dollars, versus any other brand costing you 100 times as much, unless you happen to find the origin part from a volvo or whatever they used
Doug is the kind of guy to review a spectacularly detailed car that is about to go on sale, and drive it in the rain for 10 minutes without even punching the gas.

On race cars that thin flap on the trunk was called the "wicker bill". I was designed to swap out and go to a larger one for more downforce or a smaller one for less downforce. The more you know... ;)
I completely appreciate not being able to park too close to another vehicle. My 2015 Ram 1500 has flimsy running boards, so I have to "jump out" of the truck. Thats one of the top reasons Ive avoided buying a Ford GT. That, and I cant afford one.
It took a moment to realize you were talking about the Retro Birds that shared the platform with the LS. I wish he’d gone into some detail for the rationale behind the door design. It makes it easier to step over the broad sills. Unlike gullwings and scissor doors, you can open them in most garages.
Clarkson from Top Gear crapped on this car with his usual propaganda (as he does literally any American car) which is what brought the market down. Then people realized this car was truly epic.

This car has been my dream car since I was a kid of 13. I'll never drive, let alone own one, but it's such a goddamn beauty, enough to make me cry just looking at the gorgeous shapes of it, the sound of its engine and the overall quality of it.
Have hope in your self. Hope you get one.
The standard wheels definitely look better than the optioned wheels
That little flap on the rear deck is called a gurney flap and you can see it on a lot of racing cars. You can even see it on many current F1 cars' rear spoiler.
I love how he covered the key design, because it’s been proven people can just create it online and steal the car.. unfortunately.
He didn't used to do that, but has been since a year or two.
Makes me wonder that that's why he also redoes some of the same cars, because maybe he showed full keys in those videos.
Aside from them being for sale on C&B.
This is exactly the perfect colour scheme for this car
How awesome is this!? AMMO NYC and Doug Demuro together! What an interesting combination!
I spotted one selling in Brazil with lambo doors. They made it way more practical due to their shape. It should have been a factory feature from the beginning.
One of the most iconic cars of all time.
@Berley_1234 no way? Wow. Yes one of my favorites since I was a kid.
@Berley_1234 maybe now, but keep on dreaming my brother. You never know what the future holds for you.
When I first saw one in person in 2007 getting serviced at a Ford dealership, it has become one of my dream cars to own, right behind the Mclaren F1.
Doug, do the Ford GT90 next! 💪
the nice part of having other ford parts is if something breaks you just buy the replacement for 5 dollars, versus any other brand costing you 100 times as much, unless you happen to find the origin part from a volvo or whatever they used
The idea they put two additional locks for the clamps is so crazy. They’d be so smooth to use if the locks were tied into the door locks.
Owned Mac home audio gear, if the car audio is anywhere close what a joy to use and listen to.......
Had 3 of these, one tuned to 850bhp, absolutely fantastic cars. Its a shame their prices have gone crazy recently, but not surprising.
What's a shame is you sold yours before they appreciate it so much. 😂
@@ButterfatFarms Yep !
Doug is the kind of guy to review a spectacularly detailed car that is about to go on sale, and drive it in the rain for 10 minutes without even punching the gas.
they nailed the gt perfectly.
This may have already been said, but the interior door release handles are from the 2000's f series trucks along with the dash hvac vents
I worked with a dude that was a part of the engineering team for the GT and he had some crazy stories. I wish I would have grabbed a beer with him for a few dedicated story times, but just the few I got when working around him were awesome still
Great video! The 2005 Ford GT is a truly iconic car that is both beautiful and capable. It's a shame that they only made so few of them, but I'm glad that I got to see one in person. Thanks for sharing
Nice job, Larry. This car is beautiful!
That, and I cant afford one.
the fact they built these in the SAME factory as the Lincoln LS and the Last of the Thunderbirds is crazy.
Didn't those both use the rare 3.9?
@@valeriezorn9420 Yep, Jaguar designed, American built 243Ci V8.
It took a moment to realize you were talking about the Retro Birds that shared the platform with the LS. MN12 Cougars and Thunderbirds were built in Lorain Ohio, except for some built at Wixom during a strike as I recall. They also assembled knockdown kits in Mexico to humor Mexican trade policy I forget the reason.
Doug talking and Larry just wiping tells me its a good one
Love to see Doug review the Ford GT in his new format. Such an awesome iconic car!!!
That was also a commercial flop
I remember seeing one of these in the showroom and the back was open...I VIVIDLY remember looking at the tires and being like, "wtf?" 😂 315mm is a foot...345 is just crazy. lol
Ah yes, the good old regular Doug Ford GT review.
It's tradition!
I wish he’d gone into some detail for the rationale behind the door design. It makes it easier to step over the broad sills. Unlike gullwings and scissor doors, you can open them in most garages.
Doug’s the type of guy to lean on a freshly detailed car just so he can add a layer of Doug Skin Oil for a extra layer of protection!! 🤣🤣
Happy to see it sold after auction! Congrats Larry and Doug!
this car is so good, bro had to review it again
doug has now singlehandedly increased the price of base model wheel ford GTs by 100% with this video
I genuinely hate this car
Doug is the type of guy to record 3 videos for both the new and old Ford gt
Clarkson from Top Gear crapped on this car with his usual propaganda (as he does literally any American car) which is what brought the market down. Then people realized this car was truly epic.
I hope the GT90 will be featured some day, its my favorite car in Need For Speed II
This color combination with those wheels... the perfect ford gt.
Wow! As big of a fan as i am of the Ford GT, I was BLOWN AWAY when he mentioned the 100 in the headlights! I somehow never heard that before!
Today’s modern technology and modern. ” TABLETS EVERYWHERE “ can never beat the old and classic designs . OLD IS GOLD ❤
The Doug x Larry collab is one we didn’t know we needed, but turned out to be necessary
Doug visits Larry. Automotive universe matrix has been broken. The level of car nerd in that studio must have been off the charts!
