Maiden voyage of my new Singer 1956 401 G today after my lube and oil so silky smooth and powerful made from recycled Luftwaffe aluminium airframe this machine flies so gobsmacked by stitch quality Cost $60 Australia & some enthusiasm wife bought for me Fathers Day Thank you for sharing your knowledge and great presentations Mmmmmm there’s a ghostly call in the wind “time for another sew machine”
That was a good price! The rotary hook mechanism and all round excellent engineering makes the 401g a machine I would be reluctant to give up. So what type of machine next?
I have acquired 401A machines because I love good machinery and always wanted to sew for items on my sailboat. This video is what I've been wanting to learn some things about the machines. Know all I need is to learn some sewing.
Thank you so much for this helpful video. I've been using my mother's 401-A model my entire life, but yesterday it completely locked up after 60 years of use - those troublesome cams, I suspect. Fortunately I bought a 401-G about 5 years ago, so I have a spare. This video helped me make the transition. I plan to fix my mother's machine, but having the spare allowed me to complete my project and work on the other machine at my own pace. I am so very pleased to have been offered the 401-G for £85 from the fine old gentleman who used to service my 401-A. These are such glorious machines and well worth buying and maintaining.
I cam across y 1:37 our tutorial today. It will be helpful whan I start using it again. I aquiref this machine a number of years ago when I saw an ad on craig's list. I drove 80 miles to get it. The lady was selling it as a part of an estate sale. We talked about the machine and mentioned she had 2 more vintage machine which she gave to me for a charty program in central America. I brought them home in the dead of winter, 20 below zero. 😊😅 friend oiled and cleaned them and we donated them to charity.
My late mum had this machine. It brought back some fond memories of her making clothes for my sister and I. It's such a beautiful machine, so much more advanced than the one I currently have, which is almost 10 years old.
Thank you very much for this very interesting video. One of these machines has been donated to our charity shop. Before we can offer it for sale we must know that it works - and how to use it in case anyone asks. Your comments on its history are very helpful. Thank you. We will refer the buyer to this blog too.
Have now collected two working 401G Singers and what a delight to sew with My so called modern plastic sew machines fall short of these for mechanical sophistictication Again grateful for your learned direction to these wonderful machines adding to another level of sewing enjoyment
This was helpful... just got my 401G yesterday! Hope you could make more tutorials/reviews of this beautiful machine: how to use cams, what to do if the inner built decorative stitches don't work - what would cause these problems and how to fix them.
If you don't need more than a straight stitch, the 301A is the way to go. Full rotary hook, same bobbins and bobbin case as 221/222, actual drop feed for free motion work. They make a beautiful stitch. I have an early tan short bed. Love it!
It sounds great and stitches beautifully. I have the 401g too but mine doesn't sound quite as quiet as yours! Think I need to have another look inside. Also, I think I've been threading the secondary stitch guide the wrong way round. 🙈 Thanks for taking us around this lovely wee machine.
Great video of a machine i don`t have yet, but may buy one today. Is there any weak spots i should look after on the 401G ? I mainly collect the 201 model, but i think i have to try out these one also.
The bed extenslion/storage thing is interesting , but i have to say i like the 401A better, necause i think the bobin winder and hand wheel arr better. I wish i could out the 401 on a treadle, that would be awesome. I would like the have a 431
Interesting. I'm eyeing a 401A, but I had no idea that that machine was actually produced here in Germany. Guess, my chances of getting additional feet and, if necessary, parts for repair are actually pretty decent then. This is my biggest concern with aquireing one these oldies. My 10 year old high end, computerized Pfaff has 'issues', which point to a defect chip and I honestly don't know, if I want to invest 300-400€ into repairing it. I hardly ever use anything but straight and zickzack stitch anyway. Maybe I would be better served with an old machine, I can take care of myself.
The 401s are still easily available and you should not have any issues getting parts. There's plenty of vintage sewing machine specialists who can help.
@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns Thanks! These videos are really immensely helpful - I wouldn't even consider this, if there wasn't so much information available on old machines by now.
Ive bought a great looking 201 but i cant seem to find a dutch version of something like Swarfega. Everything seems to have pumice or micro granules which would leave scratches. Would you have another recommendation?
@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns thank you that would be awesome!! And no i could order gojo but it would have to come from America, for some reason i cant seem to order swarfega either ;-;.
I purchase a Singer 411g and I cannot see much difference besides that the 411g has light color in the tension knob. Do you know some other differences in the mechanical?
What do you recommend to clean the paintwork on this machine please? mine has dried old oil that has leaked over the front from where it was stored face down in a table, I think whoever "serviced" it overdid the oiling!

Silky smooth! Incredible!
I just bought one today in VA, USA for $50 with most of the original attachments and a few extras and the manual. I am so excited!
Enjoy it! They're great machines!

@@rich-f-in-tx6388 That's fine for people in North America, but the 301 was never sold in Europe, so they are exceedingly rare here.

Hi, I have this exact same machine passed onto me. I was wondering if other types of stitches would still work without the pattern cam?
yes, the pattern cams are additional patterns. There's a lot of built in cams to make a variety of stitches.
Ive bought a great looking 201 but i cant seem to find a dutch version of something like Swarfega. Everything seems to have pumice or micro granules which would leave scratches. Would you have another recommendation?
I'll see if I can do some research. I know in the US they use Gojo bit I'm sure that's not available in Europe either.

If you are in the UK, Swarfega - original formula. If you're in the US, Gojo - non pumice
@@CurioByBSpokeDesigns Thank you, UK here :)
@@janevacani6789 The swarfega works great on these!

These have not been made for almost 60 years. Try eBay or Facebook Marketplace.
How to remove the singer sewing machine 401g motor?
The motor is removed from underneath the machine.
I am really struggling to get my thread round the tension dial and to hold the metal loop upwards the thread just slides off to the side...
Hold the reel of thread to stop more pulling off. The springs can be a little stronger than you would expect.
