I enjoyed watching this. Very informative. Well done! I have the American model 401A. I notice a couple of differences in the 401G. Owners of the latter seem to think it is a superior machine. I wonder what makes them think so.
You have a 401A? Great to hear... Congratulations. The 401 is an amazing machine. Watching some online pictures of the 401A I saw some differences too. I don't have a 401A but I cannot imagine the 401G is superior to the 401A. I guess they are basically the same so they should work more or less identical. Take care and enjoy your 401A!
Thanks Erik, great video!. The best sewing machine ever, in my opinion. Can anyone suggest a fix for my 401G; The clutch wheel will not move at all, everything else works fine. I'm waiting on a delivery of original Singer grease, to use on all relevant parts, already oiled parts that can be oiled, but it won't be going behind the clutch for obvious reasons 😟, I'm hoping greasing the related parts and using the machine may help?, if not what can be done?. Sorted, a few light taps with a rubber mallet and the clutch is off 😊
Thank you so much for your message Chuck! I'm glad you liked the video. I found the Singer 401-facebookgroup very helpful when I had issues with my 401G. If you have a FB-account you might consider joining that group. I'm glad you were able to fix your main issue. Good luck and enjoy your 401!!!
Succes
How often should you oil a sewing machine? I have a 328 that is in good condition except I cannot disengage the clutch to load the bobbin. The wheel is stuck.
I oil my sewing machine before every big project, or after it has been sitting for a while. I've read that a sewing machine needs to be oiled every 8hrs of continuous use. But you can notice when it needs some oil. Sewing machine oil is also excellent to get a frozen sewing machine (or part) moving again. But you have to be patient, don't rush things. Oil a section and let is sit for a day. Try again and if it's still frozen: oil it again and wait another day. If there is no result in some days, you might want to apply some heat. The metal expands and retracts, so the oil will penetrate it better. If that doesnt help: try kerosine. Good luck!
@@antonettepollard1073 How awful! They sometimes pop up at marketplace or Ebay. There are specialized vendors who deal in vintage sewing machines and sewing machine gear. I've orderd something at Helen Howes in the UK. In the USA you might want to contact Central Michigan Sewing Supplies. Good luck!
The 402A is better because true all metal drive train, front face bobbin winfer and old school hand wheel/clutch knob. The 401A would be the best if it had a convertible free arm,
Nice high quality camera shots, great work Erik!
Thank you so much Jane!!!
One of the coolest machines back in time. Can't wait for 306G.
You're right, but Singer had Manu cool machines. Almost too much! 🙂 LOL!
Gostei da máquina ❤

Maybe they're confused because of the 431G?

Hallo Erik, mooie filmpjes. Weet jij of er nog ergens de onderdelen voor "chainstitch" te koop zijn? Groetjes, Anton

Best thing to do is search for another machine, for parts.
Good luck

Hi Vittoria. The video has English subtitles. (And another version has Dutch subtitels...)
I hope that helps.
Take care, Erik
