@Knight Rider The best SINGER ever produced are the 401A (USA), 401G (Germany), both from 1957, 411G (Germany) from 1962, the 600, 603, 620, 630, 640 Touch and sew (USA) series of the 'year 1963/64, 611g of the year 1965, 650g of the year 1967, the series 700 / 720g, 702 / 722g, 706 / 726g, 708 / 728g, of the year 1969, the series 740 / 770g, 744 / 774g , 746 / 776g (Germany), of the year 1972, the 750 series (USA) of the year 1970, Futura 1000 of the year 1975, Athena 2000 of the year 1976. I hope you will be happy with these jewels of technique and engineering ... Greetings from Italy
It is unfortunate the damage you found. Every so often when I run across something like this, I remember hearing a story from a friend of getting his broken car home again by temporarily fixing the problem with a piece of gum. If only that culd work for everything, lol!
Please do a comparison of 401 vs 319. I gave up my 401 in favor of a 319. I firmly believe 319s make better stitches. 319s also don't have timing issues.
That poor machine was badly repaired at some point. It has been "bojacked" with a Singer #700 series motor that was simply jammed into it.. Note that the motor retention bracket is missing and the motor gear of a #401 is slightly tapered at the top.. A shame...
Thanks for the info. Yes it looks like it's been messed around with. It is a real shame to see this sort of botched repair. I did think the motor should have come out reasonably easily. Do you mind emailing me? The web address is in the description.
I would have attempted to loosen the motor with a rubber hammer on a teflon or plastic washer after some WD40 overnight. I would not apply heat. With a little persuasion I am sure it would have come out. It seems one or two bearings may have failed and they can be replaced at little cost
I have singer computer 7900dx. And i am having an issue that the needle is not picking up the bobbin thread. A few days ago I'd overlock my silk trauser and it got a little Stucked in the foot. After that it's been there. Can you please tell me how to fix it
Wish I could say I love my singer 401 A and two 401G but they sit in storage may be used for anchors .Two motors burnt out with smoke billowing out of one and the other motor looks on the way out The old electrics are a hazard and 0:01 the old Bakelite motor Shell cracked. I have lost my romance with old machines Luv my computer sew machines and my ever reliable pfaff 1979 Hobby.
I love SINGER, the number 1... They are very beautiful machines, aesthetically and technically treated ... Sewing is magical with SINGER

What a gorgeous machine....the styling is fabulous....reminds me of Steampunk.
A great video my friend. I love the Singer 401. Keep the video's coming.

I can’t wait to get mine tomorrow I know it’s really dirty if it didn’t work well I will have the profile desk with leaf and I’m sure it should work

Is this Machine good for soft smooth fábric???
Like lace, velvet..... A friend has it AND want to make a dress.
I have that blackening on the handwheel too.. It seems to have come from the bobbin winder tire
The paint is actually being scrapped off so it's not from the bobbin winder. I wish it was just that however :)
Ough I see.. Probably some parts protruding into it.

The 401 I have has a 2 prob and a petal plug 🔌 is that a newer version or was it repaired at some point
Could that be the American version or maybe double insulated?
I think they change it when they put the 401a tag on it because I have noticed the one with out the tages have three prongs Im not totally sure though
Wish I could say I love my singer 401

Maybe the smoke is caused by blown capacitors not blown motors? Thanks for your comment.
