Five Common Side Effects of Antidepressant Medication (SSRIs).

  • In this video, I discuss the common side effects associated with five popular antidepressants, including Zoloft, Lexapro, Wellbutrin, Prozac, and Cymbalta. Four of these medications are SSRIs, while Wellbutrin is a different type of antidepressant with its own unique set of side effects.
    I explain that nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, dry mouth, and somnolence are the five common side effects of SSRIs. Wellbutrin, on the other hand, may cause agitation, constipation, headache, migraine, and weight loss.
    As Zoloft is the most commonly prescribed antidepressant in the US, I provide detailed information about the chances of experiencing side effects when taking this medication. According to the manufacturer's package insert, there is a high likelihood of experiencing nausea, diarrhea, insomnia, dry mouth, and fatigue or dizziness with Zoloft.
    Overall, I note that there is a high probability of experiencing at least one of these side effects when taking antidepressant medication, and suggest that viewers consult their doctor before starting any new medication.

    Hello. Traumatic brain injury survivor here. The accident happened in my early teen's and I'm in my mid-40s now. The doctor's pushed about every SSRI on me. I can't take them. Being a man, the sexual side effects were too brutal. Besides that, they made me fixate on morbid thoughts. I finally found a psychiatrist that has placed me on some meds that have made me the most stable I've been since my accident. The problem is, my doctor just retired. Now I'm left with 2 refills of each medication until I find another doctor. The worst part is having to retell everything I've been through to a stranger without any guarantee that I will be prescribed the medications that has keep me stable because some are 'controlled.' I swear, I'm so fed up with dealing with my health. It took years to find the right combination of meds all for what? The system could care less. Sorry to vent.

      I stopped taking SSRIs a couple months ago when I couldn't get it up for a woman i had never slept with prior, and was pretty attracted to! It's the worst feeling, having to feel not only embarrassed of yourself, but bad for her because she thinks she can't arouse you

      @@nichobee I know exactly what you're talking about. This same situation happened with a smoking hot ex girlfriend I dated. No matter what I said, she thought it had something to do with her. This medication (Effexor) singlehandedly ruined our relationship, and we are no longer together because of it. If there is any good news from all of this, it took several months, but I finally regained function after stopping the medication. Never again am I taking any SSRI medication. I honestly believe there is something sinister behind these types of medication's causing medically induced ED. Take care and I wish you all the best.

    I really like your content! I did a stint as a forensic psychiatric nurse and understand the plight of the patients in these mental hospitals. These drugs are widely overprescribed and caustic, not to mention all the secondary medications needed to medicate the abundant iatrogenic effects and diseases that say antipsychotics lead to.
    I was once locked in a psychiatric ward in Texas senior year of high school and hammered with abilify rather than therapy over chronic abuse I had been experiencing at home. The abilify had a paradoxical effect and made me go insane. It took me a long time to recover and led me to a book called anatomy of an epidemic by Robert Whittaker, SO MUCH truth to it.
    I have a question for you... you seem like an exceptionally bright psychiatric nurse, has it ever dawned upon you to advance your education and become a nurse practitioner who helps wean patients off these caustic drugs or to lowest dose possible?

      And yes I've considered becoming an NP for exactly that reason, but I probably won't. The cost + my jadedness w/ formal education + worried about finding an NP job where I'm not prescribing these meds is concerning. Perhaps I could work w/ psychedelics, although I need to do a lot more research/experimenting.

    Part of the reason I tried depression meds (and then later a mood stabilizer) for my low moods was because I struggled getting out of bed/suffered from extreme fatigue. I would frequently complain about this to my psychiatrist and they continued to put me on medications that made the fatigue worse, which completely negated the reason I was even willing to try psychiatric treatment in the first place. I have other “horror” stories from my most recent experience dealing with these medications, but the bright side is that I at least know now that my mood swings and depression could be significantly worse (which ironically has helped me tremendously with regulating my moods on my own through coping skills and self reflection).

    SSRI’s only work on about 25% of people who take them. So, if they aren’t working for you, work with professionals to find other ways to get out from under the raincloud. Doing stuff when you’re feeling depressed is hard, though, so, I get that. But if you reach out for solutions, you enhance self efficacy and internal locus of control, which in turn, can help you feel more empowered. I am not saying this is easy, but if the drugs aren’t working, then don’t be afraid to say so to your therapist, and move on to other means of healing.

    I took ssris for 10-plus years. Then it stopped working started making me feel agitated so I slowly got off of them which took about a year. I had a major issue where I needed to be on the medication but couldn't .Its developed a hypersensitivity to ssris. I tried multiple different brands also snris when I would put a small amount of the tablet in my mouth maybe one fifth of a dose I would feel really restless and extremely agitated. It's like my body would not let me get back on one. When I was in my early twenties I could hop on and off one without any issues? Have you ever encountered this or have a perspective on? Thanks

      @El-wc5hl Год назад +3

      Hi Christopher, I have had these issues with meds including SSRIS. I watched the link about paradoxical reactions and I'm not sure he quite understood what you meant. What I think is our body changes over the years and becomes more sensitive to medication as our liver is less able to metabolise toxins. I also wonder if it's akin to an immune response - the body remembers the toxin - ssri - and fights to expel it from your system. This is personal experience and makes sense to me.

    • @christopherwg4236
      @christopherwg4236 Год назад +2

      El yes that's what I have also thought years ago I read a study from the Netherlands where there is a large panel of doctors that said after the 8 to 10 year SSRI user mark they were seeing a type of autoimmune response where the body can actually start to attack serotonin itself. They also said that when that starts to happen the person goes into a world of hurt!That make sense what you were saying about an autoimmune response against the medication perhaps? All I know is that the doctors had absolutely no clue when I would tell them about my situation just try to put me on more medications that did not work. The conclusion that made sense to me after trying multiple medications was that somehow my body was fighting against the medication looking at it like an enemy!

Also, on top of all this ...if you happened to have been diagnosed with sleep apnea but had trouble using the A/C-PAP device because the air pressure keeps increasing. (Gasping for air triggers false apnea results) There are quacks out there that are attributing these to depression or P.T.S.D. but after 40 years of dealing with these issues, I've reached a different prognosis, and have a long medical history to back my prognosis. @erikeippel give me a break with, "just try eating healthy, sleeping more, drink water, exercise and sunshine" BS! I do all of that in spades. I am very into fitness, eat clean, go on hikes, have friends, avoided medication my whole life....now I am 42 and my depression has never got any better! I am at my worst spot. Lost my libido too. Without drugs.
      So now what do you prescribe? Even more sunshine and exercise? Smh

  • @MilkyWayGalaxyy
    @MilkyWayGalaxyy 11 месяцев назад +1

    i am 42, severe depression since i was 10. Never took any medication. Now i lost my libido completely. Dont even get erections anymore.
    And i workout everyday, sleep better than ever and eat very clean and healthy!
    I think its bc i am so unhappy and depressed. So now i figure, it cant get any worse so i might as well try antidepressants. It might help my libido and lack of happiness. Made my first appointment to see a Psychiatrist. Which drug should i try first? Lexipro? wellbutrin?
    I have heard good things from both men and women in my depression group about antidepressants. They said it helps level you out. Never get too low.
    But reading these negative comments makes me very hesitant to start taking drugs for the first time in my life.

      so a side note. . .some years ago in my later 20s and early 30s, i was in the same boat (except my sleep hygiene wasn't that great), but diet + exercise, etc. Weak social life too (this probably factors in as well). But my libido was almost non-existent and i remember thinking: wtf is happening? Maybe it's just age and this is normal. . .
      Then i went back to nursing school and was surrounded by a bunch of women i found attractive and i swear i felt 18 all over again. . .for better or for the worse lol. So. . .just something to think about as it relates to libido.
      as for the antidepressants, i'd stay clear of them. the one thing you didn't mention in your comment was your social life and exposure to those you find attractive--i'd say if the exposure isn't there, you might have less of a libido. I think w/o proper social life it's hard not to feel depressed too. Just food for thought.

    The problem is SSRIs do not work. I have struggled with depression for over 30 years.
    I'm on Prozac at the moment and I've been on others.
    Depression is a vile disease, unfortunately medicine is still in the dark ages when treating this condition.Why? Because it's not just a disease of the mind it's also a disease of society.
