Just purchased a Sony a5100 w/kit lens for some live streaming at the recommendation of another RUclipsr/Streamer, and it should be here this week. The search for the "right" lens for me, though, has had me stressed... feeling like a need a college degree in photography to understand anything. Your video here did a few great things for me: 1) you reinforced my decision to pay the extra $50 for the kit lens, 2) you convinced me of the value of using the kit lens for a bit to see what settings will be best for my streaming setup, and 3) you really helped me with a base understanding of the jargon in the naming/classification of these lenses. Seriously - I'm feeling much less intimidated and significantly more patient. I'll be able to wait on an upgraded lens purchase now, thanks to you, and I'm much less likely to waste money on the wrong fit for me. THANK YOU for this video. Have a sub/follow!!
@@Zuchii I ended up going with the kit lens for a bit and I liked it... it was a good quality lens and even though the bokeh effect was less than I wanted, it worked VERY well. After about a month, though, I switched it up and went with this one: Sigma 16mm F1.4 (like in his description above). I'm not really streaming at all, but I use this every day as my telework camera... so I'm the best-looking manager on the conference calls in Teams/Zoom. :D
Bro you're so well spoken, you get every detail out in a consistent way without umming and ooing. This is literally the most helpful video I've ever seen. Much appreciated
This is, hands down, the most relevant and helpful video for how to choose a lens for streaming. I already had a 35mm sitting in my cart, but now I understand there's absolutely no way it can fit in my current setup. Thanks so much!
I used to be a professional photographer (Canon) and I watched this to the end! Very well articulated and definitely helped me learn some things about how Sony cameras work for live-streaming. Cheers!
Just came across this video after buying an A6600 w/kit (3.5-5.6 18-135mm) as well as the 18-50mm and the Sigma 18. Happy to know that my research matches mostly up to your recommendations. Planning on getting the 35mm once I get more money. Thank you for this well informed video. The demos were exactly what I needed.
Thank you for this explanation - I am a complete techie but I never got into photography or cameras until I started hosting on-line events, and I know absolutely nothing about cameras. I've already upgraded from laptop cameras, to webcams, to phone cameras (via DroidCam), to GoPros, and now I'm on the path to a Sony A5100 and (I think) that Sigma 16mm f1.4 lens you reviewed here. I really appreciate the explanation. OK, so 3-weeks later, I've been VC'ing with a Sony A5100 for a couple of weeks and as of today, my Sigma 16mm F1.4 lens has turned up which is simply incredible. At the lowest ISO, I've had to close the aperture to f1.7 during the day because my white-painted room just over-exposes everything. But I am working tonight so I'm really looking forward to seeing how it'll all come together in the low light of my office. But let's just say this... SHARP image. And oh yeah, BOKEH - the best I've ever seen.
This is JUST the video I needed, I just recently bought a sony 5100 and it came with the standard 16-59mm lens and I wasn't sure if it will be right for me. Thanks to this video and my recent test on OBS has shown me that this lens if perfect for what I need! Thanks!
A fantastic video that accurately demonstrates everything a beginner streamer would need to know about a beginner lens. And the explanation about the kit lens was fantastic because it probably saved everyone so much money! Including myself!
Finally bit the bullet and bought some stuff to take it to the next level. Thankfully, my little sister is a photographer and she gave me some cameras and lenses to try out. Your video was very helpful. Thank you
I wish I could double link this. This video answered so many questions. It was funny Steggy said something and I thought "well what about this" and then he answers it right after. Spooky man :p thanks again! Great vid!
Thank you for covering the basics for newbies like myself and going into detail with real-world scenarios. I now understand 16mm is wider than 20mm for example.
thank you you are doing what a lot of other youtubers dont you are explaining and "showing" what lenses do unlike the ones who just do tech talk babble expecting you to buy something without showing what the lenses they talk about can physically do some dont even show pictures but still talk about the lens
Great video dude. I just got an A5100 and am using with the kit lens as a top down art camera.. The kit lens almost seems like the best option because I like to be able to set the zoom level based on the project. I still need to get better with the configuration.
Thank you for this video and video about best cameras for streaming. All information needed and clearly explained. Now I know not only which camera I should buy, but also what lense I’ll purchase in addition to the kit one. Thank you!
Grade A video my man. You just earned a sub from me, not because I'm interested in your regular content necessarily but because I think you deserve the success. Good job keep it going! Best of luck! 👏🏼
Outstanding demonstration....to a relatively complex presentation on various camera lenses. Your background setup is artistic in itself. Love the cap....you persuaded me to subscribe.
THanks sooo much man i really enjoyed the vod. learned alot and have a question about buying a new streaming camera instead of my Canon EOS Rebel t7 ! Im considering the Sony Alpha a6100 with the Kit Lens?
Would you say the sigma 16mm F/1.4 dc dn is the best aperture Lenses for streaming? I like the way it looks the most, but I want to make sure there isn’t others to consider outside this video. Hope you respond. Thanks

This was the best lens tutorial I have seen so far. Thank you!
Keep up those videos it really helped me a lot to decide what to buy from the other video and now after watching this I know a lot of lenses for streaming and I did order the Sigma 16mm 1.4 after watching the other videos it looks amazing.
well explained!! Some folks don't really utilize the kit lens! I have a sony and I use the kit lens plus an adapter for my canon lens on the sony a5100 camera. but if I decided to upgrade the camera body, those lens will come in handy and have better clarity than the a5100
I just purchased a use Body only Sony a6000 camera! What’s a great distance from the camera using a 24mm lens for streaming and recording RUclips videos in your opinion?
Thank you very much for this explanation! Im thinking about buying a Sigma 30mm F/1.4 lense for my sony a6100, so the video of it should look like about 9:25 in youre video, right? Its 30 mm instead of 35 mm, so its a bit less zoomed in, but still quite zoomed in, right? Sorry for my questions, im a noob in this topic ^^. I would appreciate it very much, if you could give me youre advice, if the Sigma 30mm F/1.4 (or optional another lense) might be a good buy for me. I also like the blur effect very much and lenses with F/1.8 or lower should have a lot of blur, right? :) In my opinion youre video at around 9:25 looks awesome and I want to try to reach the same video quality! Thank you very much! :) Greetings from Germany! SuperExtreme
I actually made an updated lens video which includes the Sigma 30mm F1.4: ruclips.net/video/vlSsSu_wVOg/видео.html So you can see firsthand how it looks vs. the Sony 35mm. But yes - roughly same bokeh, little less zoomed in.
Amazing video. Much appreciated! I am just about to pull the trigger on the A5100 kit. This is for streaming purposes only and my question is: What capture card would you recommend? The Cam link or is there any other benefits i can from a different grabber? Thanks!
Thank you! I just bought my first camera (a6100) for live streaming and I felt it was really overwhelming to find the Appropriate one for my budget. I was sure that understanding about lenses would be another overwhelming task, but you have explained everything so we that I feel this is a must to watch video for any beginner
If I get the Camlink 4k, will that make my A6400 appear in Skype/Slack/Zoom etc. to be able to select it as a webcam? P. S. Learned a lot about lenses just by watching a couple of your videos. Was really confused before, thank you for explaining so well, the way you do seems perfect for everyone!
This is so helpful. I would recommend that you perhaps timestamp the different lenses that you discuss in the info above. Thank you for explaining these things in ways that are easy for people starting out to understand!
Thanks so much for this video! I've bought two of the lenses you covered here, and hopefully you got the Amazon credit for them! I'm in the UK, so hopefully the store links you have (which are Amazon USA) give you credit for UK purchases. Cheers!
Still the best Video in terms of explaining lenses for streaming. Always recommend this to people who are interested in a Sony Alpha as a Webcam in order to maximize their quality. So thanks Steggy for that one.
Yeah the resolution and frame rate is cut if you use their software BUT it actually works pretty well with EXTREMELY slight issues so it can let you upgrade your setup to a DSLR or Mirrorless Canon camera and take your time to get a capture card since you can use USB with Canon's software. I think it makes Canon a cheaper entry point now.
Have learnt a lot from your videos, Thanks bro! If I have 50mm f1.8 prime lens ... can I use it for streaming and how much distance I should place it from the subject to get PC, Person, and keyboard/mouse in the frame?
Thank you! This is a very professional and informative video. I've recently started assisting musicians with live streams and found that while smartphone video streaming apps to the PC are cool, they are not too reliable. I have my eye on a Sony A6000 and I think I'll start with the kit lens.

Did you bought another lens? Whats your Twitch Channel?
Gregg, 12 months on- how did you go ? Any advice for someone in the same position as you were ?

2 years late but this video still holds up. amazing content. ty!
I just bought an a6000 and for now the kit lens will be perfect until I can grab a lens to get that shallow depth of field!
I used to be a professional photographer (Canon) and I watched this to the end! Very well articulated and definitely helped me learn some things about how Sony cameras work for live-streaming. Cheers!
This was the best lens video i have found for beginners and i have been digging. Thank you so much. Especially telling me to get kit lens on a5100.
i want to go with the 35mm but sigma one
BHZNero I’ll get it with the kit lens first then save up for the sigma 16mm f1.4

9:40 dude wtf this looks so good I thought this was a completely different room and setup
Best video I’ve watched so far!! Thanks for saving me from buying a 30mm lens when I already have the 15mm-50mm lens!!
This video is SO helpful, hope it gets a lot more views :)
Best explanation of lenses for webcams / streaming I've found. Thanks for taking the time to help a newcomer figure out what to get!
Im currently buying a second lense. Your video was the 6th video i watched on lenses but it was the most informative. Thanks Steggy.
Hi Steggy! What do you think of the Sony a6000? I saw that wasn't listed. Not sure if I missed it in the video - thank you!
You freaking deserver 1 million subs... you are awesome! I've never saw someone explain things like you do and using great examples!
This is one of the best lenses for streaming videos so far. Thanks a lot for all the great information you put out. 👍

thanks dude, your video really gave me some knowledge on how lenses work. I just bought a Sony Alpha 6000
This channel is amazing man! Great job!
This is the first video I saw of you. Don't even need a lense as of now but you explained it so nicely, so I stayed. Well done vid! Subscribed. :)

Thank you Brotha! After watching you vid I picked up the Sigma 16 mm 1.4 loves the comparison. It is freaking awesome!!!
I can’t explain how much your video helped me. This explained everything I was asking myself about lenses! Thanks a lot!
Agreed, what a great video!
Great simple to understand info which is perfect for a relatively new live streamer like me. Thanks!
Finally bit the bullet and bought some stuff to take it to the next level. Thankfully, my little sister is a photographer and she gave me some cameras and lenses to try out. Your video was very helpful. Thank you

Great video man! This is exactly what I was looking for; Condensed, digestible information. ^^
Nice video. Thanks for showing off the lenses and giving us an idea of what to look for.

Nice video, and great advice! Liked and subscribed!
Awesome video! Like how you broke it down simple and very good information thanks alot!
Great video at explaining the lens options. Thank you!
Minor technical note: all related sensors for non-Cawknown cameras are APS sensors while Cawknown are all APS-C (the C stands for Cawknown)

Really helpful tips and ironically I needed this yesterday before I bought a new lens lol
Wich camera you were testing this lens? In the cropped sensor or in the one with full sensor?
This video is flipping perfect! Answered all my niche weird questions perfectly! Thanks a heap for taking the time to create, man!
This video should have a few 100k more views. It made things very easy to understand.
this is the best explanation of lenses for streamers on youtube. This deserves more views, bravo sir.

Hello Steggy! Question: I'm looking to purchase the 16-50mm F3.5-5.6 lens, but didn't see that it was compatible with an A6600. It should be, right?
This is so helpful. I would recommend that you perhaps timestamp the different lenses that you discuss in the info above. Thank you for explaining these things in ways that are easy for people starting out to understand!
You did a great job making this simple.
Very informative. You explained it in very great details. Thanks
I watched so many other videos that gave me a fraction of the information you gave here. Thanks so much. Next time I'll come here first!
So it looms like the 16mm 1.4 is a good choice for live stream/webcam style?
Canon has a software you can download and use for live streaming with clean hdmi out available now.
Yeah the resolution and frame rate is cut if you use their software BUT it actually works pretty well with EXTREMELY slight issues so it can let you upgrade your setup to a DSLR or Mirrorless Canon camera and take your time to get a capture card since you can use USB with Canon's software. Best video I’ve seen yet, makes sense now! Thx
Great explanation- this was really helpful!
Thanks... That was a very good summary of various lens and their behavior...
This man is a legend!
A very helpful video. I was considering buying a 50mm lens but unfortunately I can't move the camera further than 1m. Thanks!
