Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper (wiki)
Barbie as the Princess and the Pauper is a 2004 American-Canadian direct-to-DVD computer animated musical fantasy film, and the first musical in the Barbie film series. It is directed by William Lau and stars the voice of Kelly Sheridan as the Barbie protagonists, Anneliese and Erika. The film is loosely inspired by the Mark Twain's 1881 novel The Prince and the Pauper, but unrelated to the 1939 film The Princess and the Pauper. It is the first Barbie classic film that completely excludes fantastic elements (fairies, magic, mermaids, etc), which were a usual part of Barbie franchise.
Songs for the film are written by Amy Powers, Megan Cavallari and Rob Hudnut, who also executive produced the film.

- every song is a bop and never really forced into the story
- they feature two strong female role models with their own goals and a path they wish to follow but still have a strong sense of duty (Erika paying off her parents debt, Annaliese marrying for the well being of a country)
- in the end, Erika ended up choosing to follow her own dream of being a singer before returning to Dominick a year later because, you know, love is important or something, i wouldn't know

I remember I had the barbie DVD for this movie and they used to do like bloopers or outtakes because in the barbie universe, barbie is an actress and all the fantasy movies are like their universes live action movies. But the Barbie films were ACTUALLY amazing! Strong female characters with passions, be it painting, singing, science (in Annalise's case!), dancing, skating. Some pretty realistic issues were included in several of them, like in this one Erika being in debt to a loan shark, the Kingdom losing its main industry and having to find another way to survive (this initially being through forming ties with another kingdom through marriage, which used to be very common), Annalise facing sacrificing her own happiness for a greater cause.
And you know that the songs are ICONIC! And dear god PREMINGER!!! (Also I personally have a soft spot for the evil sidekicks)

when she said that she's realizing that "every present comes with strings" she's referring to the fact that she is about to become a person of power within her kingdom/ empire, and therefore every "gift" is most likely going to have some kind of string attached- politically. As a princess within her time period she has essentially two jobs; marry well and have children. Since her kingdom is bankrupt she doesn't really have a choice except to marry rich.

Btw.....the voice actors for Annelise and Ericka are different, even their singing voices if I am correct. They put a lot of work into the details honestly and has actually adapted the original tale in a clever way so it ages like fine wine despite the outdated animation. And Arnie Roth is simply the best!

To clarify:
The SPEAKING voices of Anneliese (the princess) and Erika (the pauper) are the same: They're both voiced by Kelly Sheridan, the one true queen of the Barbie franchise.
The SINGING voices however, are different. Melissa Lyons sings for Anneliese, while Julie Stevens sings for Erika.

This movie is a masterpiece, and the most meaningful out of most Barbie movies. While in the end Erika could have had the standard happy ending with the marriage she chose her happiness and her OWN dreams first, before the man. That's what girls should look up to. They are free to go and achieve whatever their heart wishes! 💝

I was a tomboy who hated all things girly, especially Barbie, growing up. But then I had a little sister and my mom would get her bootleg DVDs to watch. I will admit, they're really good! Songs are catchy and there are good lessons in there as well. My favourites are Princess & The Pauper and The Diamond Castle ^_^

Rapunzel they'd probably joke about Gothel's voice and Penelope's fear of flying, then 12DP they'd struggle to differentiate the princesses and joke about which one is played by Barbie (Genevieve).

The butterflies are blue & pink like Erika & annaliese colors, they cross path on the opening & closing scenes because the main character cross paths, shall we talk about butterflies being a visual representation of evolution as well as the character evolve & grow during the movie 👀

Bruh you shall not disrespect the relationships in this movie. Annelise&Julien got together because they appreciate intellect above anything (that's why he's her tutor and not a prince) and Erica&Dominic are both artistic. Erica spent a year alone doing music and concerts to figure out what she really wants. And then she realized that she wants to be with him.
Also, can we appreciate Julien? He's very young and poor, yet he still got hired to be the princess's tutor. And even though he fell in love with her, when he realized she has to marry a king, he told her all the good things he has heard about Dominick. Also, he single-handedly figured out who kidnapped Annelise.
