    just managed to do this upgrade, i used one of the cables that come with the d4r and swap a couple of the pins around to connect to the usb stick.
    I didnt notice the jumper going on 1 and 2 pins to begin with (usually its 3 and 4 for cppm output) so took a while to notice that.
    first real attempt it stuck at 11% so unplugged everything and shut down updater. plugged in usb stick, powered d4r, connected d4r to usb stick, started updater and it worked 100%.
    thanks for this vid, have had the usb updater for a while but when i looked for online instructions they were a bit baffling so its been living in my spares box.

    Well done finally you did one. So now only 2 more methods to go 1. With FTDI 2. No software flashing just better use of the 17ms allocated to give 6 channels which for a lot of people is enough.

    +Painless360 I would first like to say that your videos are invaluable to me! I have learned so much from them being that I am coming back from a 10yr hiatus from the hobby. I have a question that may be slightly off topic. I have been looking to get a cheap laptop for doing this kind of thing. I keep hearing you say that you use a netbook. Is there anything special about yours or will any reasonably equipped low cost netbook be good for the job? Thanks for any advice!

      +John Jones Mine is an ACER Aspire. You don't need lots of power for most things RC. A modern laptop would have way more power than the one I use now anyway. Best of luck!

    Dear Painless360,
    I have been trying to build a pixhawk 2.4.8 quad for a long time now. I have tackled many errors by chnaging the firmware and chnaging params. But lately I have been getting the "potential thrust loss" error. The pix gets armed and good to go, but the motors won't spin. Please help.

      Please see my Pixhawk videos. I'm making updated series at the moment. I've never seen that here but I'd check ESC protocol, excessive vibration and cabling.. Best of luck

    Am I right in thinking that the new EU firmware for the Taranis renders the d4r-ii useless? I'm currently flying an x8r but am looking to get a d4r-ii to use ppm and save a few grams but am slightly put off now...

      kuunder2 This is a complicated subject! I am using OpenTX and I get all options with the EU firmware on the internal radio transmitter..

    Is this necessary if only planning to use six channels (NAZE32 w'flight mode & auto tune) ? Just that I'm hesitant to buy gadgets that I might only use once - appreciate any advice.Thanks

      +Paul Williamson You also use this cable (with another one) to flash SmartPort based receivers like the X8R too. For the low cost they are worth keeping in the bag. Happy flying!

    Hi, Great video! I have ordered a cable from Banggood because I need to change an X6R RX to slightly older spec (non EU ) to suit my Taranis PLus, is it done in a similar manner??

    Hi i'm thinking of getting Taranis X9D "PLUS" radio but it says EU firmware which only allows D16-EU mode. You must purchase an X-Series receiver. They will no longer bind to D-Series radios. so will the FrSky D4R-II 4ch (8ch w/CPPM) work with this if i update it ? the X8R Receiver is way to big for my 220 v5 thug . great vid the Taranis X9D "PLUS"will take some getting my head around unlike my old dx7s

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  8 лет назад

      +Jeff deakin It can appear confusing but the radio is well worth the small effort. You can change the firmware on the radio and receivers too so it's very flexible. I got my radio in Feb/March and loaded OpenTX onto it and got the options back to bind to D-series receivers, FrSky firmware only allow D16 mode but installing OpenTX firmware restores full functionality, including the ability to use D8 mode. If you look in for forums you can find more details.. Best of luck!

    You say 8 Channels but, it's a 4 channel. I'm missing something.
    Im using a Flysky Fs-i6. Can I use a D4r-II with PPM (one cable) and have more than 4 channels and have telemtry? Right know I dont have telemetry I'm using a Flysky fs-ia6 and waiting ages for a cheap Fs-ia6b for a PPM receiver.

    • @dfred001
      @dfred001 9 лет назад

      Yes, you can have up to 8 channels in CPPM mode.You´then want this 27ms firmware to use all 8 channels safely

      Oscar Ponce What you have is from FLYsky, this is FRsky, different brands, unless your radio is fitted with the FRsky module, you can't use this Rx.

    So what are the drawbacks of flashing this? Why doesn't it come that way from the factory? Does it make the controls a little less responsive?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 лет назад

      Timothy Smith They so now, see the forums for some reports of the failsafe having problems after flashing. Works ok here..

    • @timothysmith5453
      @timothysmith5453 9 лет назад

      Yes I can't get the receiver to setup failsafe on mine now after flashing the firmware. After searching the net there were 2 ways offered but both didn't work for me. (1 after binding pressing the F/S on the receiver with the transmitter off and the other with it on)
      I want the motors to stop when control is lost but when I choose failsafe in Baseflight the motors still run slowly (but do spool down to a slow speed) when I turn off the transmitter.

    I bought FrSky D8R-XP and connected to Flip32 in CPPM mode. Then throwed all six channels in the max, and all was well. After arming quad the throttle started drop to low and back after a every few seconds, by continue to fly the quad began to give a SOS signal from buzzer. I removed power form ESC and added separate UBEC for FC. All same. Then i connected all channels and no problem. Should I upgrade D8R firmware to?

    • @allantamm2185

      Allan Tamm Addition. I set yaw to left for filesafe and it was not triggering with this throttle drop.

  • @odinata
    @odinata 9 лет назад

    I ordered a gimbal that plugs into the the reciever--2 cables--one yaw, one pitch.
    Can I still use PPM with my flight controller and have those pitch and yaw cables plugged directly into the receiver?

    • @Painless360
      @Painless360  9 лет назад

      odinata I would use an X8R and PWM for this. You could also look at using the flight controller to run the gimbal too...Best of luck.

      I want programmable LED's as well.
      Maybe SBUS on my X8R?
      Not sure how I could control the gimbal from the board....

      Painless360 Interestingly, unlike other such devices. I retried the flash process about 10 times and on the last try the flash worked. I think it was my PC setup that caused the problem as I'm a Mac user and I run Windows 10 in a virtual machine (VBox). Maybe worth a word of warning in your future videos. FYI, I've been in IT now for 32 years and I still get caught out with this type of thing...
      Question: The flash completed with 100% and I then clicked "End". How do I know if the flash worked?

    I just had a CP2102 UART adapter without the fancy FTDI inverting capability. But fortunately, it appears that the D4R-II is RS232-compliant, so I ended up using the good old serial/COM port on an old PC and it workt just fine. Too bad they were kicked out from modern PCs, but chances are that you'll find a RS232 pin header on your motherboard...

    I tried to flash my Receiver using ftdi. but if i connected and parse it after i inverted the rx and tx, the box is unchecked. Then i found out that my FTDI is write-protected. Good thing is that my laptop(Panasonic CF 19) has an RS232 port wherein it acts like an FTDI. It's so easy to do it on my D8RII-Plus. you just need about 4 single lead servos. :D nice tutorial Painless360 , if that USB cable is cheap that would be great. haha

    • @thomaspauld
      @thomaspauld 9 лет назад +1

      Nanite Nanitian Don't forget if you use an FTDI then the first thing you have to do is Invert RS232 Signals the RXD and TXD on the FTDI, this can be done with FT_Prog under Hardware Specifics. Don't forget re-return them back after programing the receiver or next time you go to use the FTDI for normal use it won't work. Apparently from what Rob B has said later not all FTDI's allow this mod via software so please check yours before trying, thanks for the input Rob.

      Paul Thomas Invert RX and TX on the FTDI.

    • @RobB_VK6ES
      @RobB_VK6ES 9 лет назад

      Paul Thomas It's not semantics. "reverse the RX and TX" is probably going to be interpreted as a simple cross over like most of us have done before wiring in a flight controller, GPS or Bluetooth device. I have no doubt YOU know exactly what is required but what you wrote is misleading to non experts.
      To be crystal clear, What you really wanted to say was to use the Ffprog software to invert the RX and TX signal POLARITY. so that digital a high becomes low and visa versa and connect the TX line of the adapter to the RX line on the D4RII and visa versa.
      In addition to all of that, this hack is only applicable to FTDI USB-serial adapters. Adapters using ch340, CP2120 etc will not work since you can't invert the signals via software and will need a hardware inverter to work.
