Fantastic tutorial with in-depth information! Very much appreciated, I reckon i'll tackle getting my telemetry logged to SD tomorrow, you've motivated me to actually do something about it! Very happy with my Taranis+, do not regret buying it at all as my first TX. The detailed how-to vids on RUclips and forums all but confirm that I made the right choice. :)
and why did I waste 3 months flying quads on a spektrum setup? :D this is so awesome, and not that difficult once you have watched Painless' tutorials. Thanks for doing this!
Just an excellent series. A quick question - I would like to monitor the overall pack voltage on some A123 packs I have. Can I just tap off the main two power connectors - the balance plug doesn't fit the Taranis lipo but is there a way to just use two of the pins? Which ones if so?
Great videos man, when i first got my taranis i thought id jumped in too deep but your vids made sense of things that would never have been used.Thank you... p.s had a laugh every time i heard cell S. lol.
In the range for cells at 17.29, why do you set the maximum as 25.5v, obviously it works but I'm trying to understand the logic here, wouldn't full voltage be more appropriate, ie 12.6v for 3S?
Great video as always but have you any plans to update it please? The A2 Range setting has now been replaced with a Ratio setting instead and the alarm functions have now disappeared (OpenTX version 2.2.3)
Awesome video - thanks. Cant wait for the D4R-ii one and setting up with Naze32 - also would it be possible to include some info on any differences between setting up the D4R-ii and a D8R-XP. I'm using both with a Naze32 and cleanflight.
the video shows you powering the x8r on the bench with what appears to be a 11.1v lipo... how are you doing that? voltage range on the x8r is 4>10v ? thanks Bob
Where can I get all of your video's in one place, I have had a problem with the computer and lost the lot.I would like to have them all in one spot and click on what I need. At the moment I am trying to put a TT Raptor 30 onto the Taranis,as this is a 90 deg swash plate set up. I have done the Throt hold, it is how to mix Throt and pitch together, gyro onto to a channel and swop between normal and heading hole, all the usual setting as found on the other transmitters and then adding sound, this is one part I have so far got right.
Hi, great video series. Recently got my Taranis and a naze32, it will be replacing the KK2 on my custom Windstal Tricopter so I can get GPS and telemetry. But I can't seem to get telemetry communication between the naze32 and the X8R working, do you have any experience with that?
Johan Bloemberg If you look on the Cleanflight pages you'll see that, at the moment, SmartPort support is tricky. I am waiting for it to be implemented in the code before making a video. See github.com/cleanflight/cleanflight/blob/master/docs/Telemetry.md
Painless360 thx for the feedback, I found the receiver hacks already but was hoping maybe somebody would already figured of a workaround, since I don't want to modify my receivers (and with the x8r it can't be done afaik). I will see if i can get some sort of bi directional inverter to make it work. I hope to get my FLVSS next week by mail so I have a proper s.port signal to inspect.
Painless360 I found this: www.multiwii.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=4507 someone already build a two directional inverter for multiwii, will give that a try.
Hey Lee, I have a question... I'm using the x8r in a plane I just got... I have the little voltage sensor you show in the video.. the screen on it reads each cell v , and total v.. I was trying to set up the telemetry screens and I don't get the option for "cell" .. I get "cells, -cells, +cells... but know "cell" ??? any idea why?... Thanks, Bob by the way... everything else is showing up.. rssi.. batt, rxbat.. almost perfect.
The FrSky Lipo Voltage Sensor is minimal, but I kind of wish it came in a plastic protective box instead of the tape wrap it has. For this reason, I think I'll run a connecting wire from it I can connect to, and encase it myself.
Lee, I don't know if you can help, I have all my telemetry log data for todays flights on Open Tx Companion but in the Fly sessions box it is showing "2782 sessions " and won't display graphs. What have I done wrong? Unfortunately I can't attach a screenshot on here. Thanks.
on my menu in the logical swith section...i have no "cells" selection? just one that says "batt", but that is for the battery in the radio. am i missing something?
Hi Lee, just wondered if it is possible to use INAV to send the telemetry back to the Taranis - i'm running an F722 FC board and the latest INAV. Thanks.
@@Painless360 Yes, but does that require a lead back to the receiver? I have the same receiver that you have used in the video which I don't think supports telemetry like the X8R does? Might have got that wrong...
Hi there, I have the voltage sensor connected to the smart port on an X6R. I just want it to read out the lowest cell voltage - to TWO NUMBERS RIGHT OF THE DECIMAL. That is how I am used to checking my voltage on a voltage checker. I have it set up so it reads out the figure when I go to SA-. But it only reads "3.8" for example, when on the screen I can see "3.87". Is there an easy way to get it to read out the complete number? Thanks.
Sir is there any way to use two sensors , i have a mlvss and a gps sensor . I would like to use them both. Is there any way of doing so? I searched your playlist but failed to find something related to this topic. Please help sir
Check out my videos on the smartport sensors. You can connect them all in a daisychain and then connect them to the x series reciever. Thats why there are two connections on the sensors... best of luck!
I just purchased and received a brand new Taranis-plus from ReadyMadeRC that's running firmware version 2.1.6. Trying to get through the learning curve and test this radio system for defects during the short warranty period. I'm having a problem with receiver pack voltage....at the moment it is showing a detected voltage of 5.1v on the telemetry menu but it is verbally reporting 5.6v when prompted by flipping an assigned switch. Any ideas for why there's a discrepancy in the reported voltage, on-screen vs voice ? Also on the home screen of the transmitter, it's displaying a pair of strength bars for both the tranmitter and receiver battery packs (like in your video), but it is only showing the numerical voltage value for the transmitter battery next to its strength bar, but no numerical value for the receiver battery next to it's strength bar (unlike your video). Any ideas for the cause of these basic problems ? Thanks.
+akenedy ...so I figured out by myself that to get a numerical voltage for the receiver battery diplayed on the home screen next to the strength bar, I needed to go back to the Telemetry menu and set "Top Bar" - "Voltage Source" to "RxBt". Frankly I think it's ridiculous that this is not set as a default setting since the strength bar for the receiver battery is displayed by default on the home page, but without any label or numerical value to indicate what the heck it represents. I am still stupified about the discrepancy between receiver voltage reported on screen versus verbally however....at the moment the screen displays a value of 4.8v but the verbal report simply says "4 volts". What sort of nonsense is this?!
What is the difference between "cels" and "cells". Following the above video there are no "cells" shown, Have "Rx BT+, RxBt- RxBt" The pages on the set-up seem different to what is now in the new firmware. I now have 2 computers going at once to try and match the video's.
Hello, I am trying to achieve autonomous flight using MP. Is it possible to start the flight using the transmitter? I cannot switch modes to auto while disconnected from MP.
Hi, I'd like to ask you can you make a video tutorial about Taranis batterys calibration, how to setup - Taranis battery low. How to set up and calibrate not original Taranis batteries. Is it important and how is important batteries calibration? I'm asking you, because i am very respect information from you channel.
Hi and thx for very good channel! I wonder how hard is to have Taranis logs to nice data to video? I have tried to dashware and RaceRender with my Phantom, but it would have perfect if I could have my telemetry data from Taranis to my Cloud Surfer videos.. Hopefullu you have some good tips or advice.. :)
I recently upgraded my Taranis to OpenTX 2.1. All telemetry was basically lost. Its seems they did a big overhaul of that systems and "cell" "cells" etc... no longer exist. I was able to get RSSI working but still cant get cell voltage readings to work. Do you know of any up to date resources on how to setup telemetry for 2.1?
Bill Sheley I am not planning on doing any 2.1 update videos at the moment. I know that the OpenTX University are looking to do something in the near future.. Best of luck with it..
Great tutorials! I had one question: How are you getting the individual cell voltages on the taranis? I'm also using the same battery test module, but on the taranis, I only have "Cells" and "Cell." How did you get the individual cell voltages at 13:23?
+Painless360 great thanks! In the meantime, what are the variable names for the individual cells? I'll try adding them to see if I receive the values on the taranis... Thanks!
Thanks for this amazing video. Any suggestion on how can I put together 3 MVLSS or FVLSS unites, or any mixing of them, in order to monitor two 6s packs and one 2s packs simultaneously? That’s for my Trex800 heli using a RX8R RX and Taranis 9XD TX so the 2s pack is for the receiver / fbl module / servos and others for its hungry 450kV motor. Thank you!
I've read you can but not tried it yet. Using the latest firmware on the voltage sensor you can change one of their IDs to be something else.. Best of luck!
Painless360 thanks a lot for this clue. I just found out that’s actually you don’t need to go through the firmware. You can just use a servo channel changer and easily change sensor’s identity. I did that for my three packs (1x 2S for RX and 2x 6S flight packs) and now everything working fine! Cheers
I'm currently running v2.1.8 on my taranis plus.. trying to setup some telemetry.. I did the screen setup in telemetry 12/12 and selected BATT in the first field.. when I go to the telemetry screen it doesn't show anything? the tx voltage is showing at the top of the screen... but that's it? what am I doing wrong?
See the note at 12:18 and the clickable link about 2.1.X near the start to one of the later videos. You need to discover the sensors before you can play with them. Best of luck!
+Painless360 hi, i was looking for options to get telemetry of my pixhawk on to my taranis. it seems there is a option to get the mavlink telemetry on to your taranis. but the vids i find for doing that are not really clear to me. i use a 3dr radio and a minimosd on my pixhawk for the moment but like to get the telemetry down to my taranis to wen i fly without a ground station or fly line of sight instead of fpv. alsow it would be nice to get the rssi from my taranis on to my minimosd and 3dr radio as well. now i only got radio rssi on my taranis itself. can you help plz? i am using d4r-2 reciever. i alsow have a x6r ass well but i like the small one better. but maybe there is a sollution for the smartport to px4? so i dont need to use the telemetry port on my px4? than maybe i will consitter using the big receiver. but as it is now i use the small one on my 450 sice quad. cheers!
yeah thanks! i go for the seral 4/5 option i think, as then the tx level of the telemetry port is not getting pulled down as i already experience some issues with that using both minimosd and 3dr radio at the same time. and i got a buffer in it to but dois not seem to help. i remember u have a vid that shows how to sent the rssi of the taranis over channel 8 to the pixhawk right? sorry been out of the hobby for about a year, having a hard time remembering all the things i once learnt... cheers!
Sir painless360! I have some pain, I have the smart port sensors and the new sxr styled frsky rx's. Now we can have a stabilised wing and the smart port data. However is there any way we can get the smart port sensor data into an osd!! Or do I have to fit a non flight controller osd eg ezosd (dead product) tarot osd 2 or is there something else.
Do I have to download an extra file to my Taranis to get "Cell & Cells" to show up on the telemetry screen. If not why do you think it's not showing up. Thanks
Hi Lee, I am using OpenTx firmware version 2.2.0. When I go to the “Display” page, under Screen 1, important parameters such as RSSI, Cell, Cells, do not appear among the parameters that can be selected. Any explanation? Could it be the firmware version 2.2.0 ?
You need to 'discover' the telemetry senors first in the telemetry page on the radio. This changed dramatically from OpenTX 2.1. This is all covered in my OpenTX 2.2 videos. Hope they help :D
Watch the series ;) it's all covered later when we look at the changes in OpenTX 2.1 where the telemetry changed drastically from that shown in the video here. Best of luck!
Found the video! I've followed the instructions, and now I have an odd problem: As soon as I turn on my Transmitter, I get the verbal warning "Battery Low". Its not. And the bars don't show it to be, and the marker on the bar is not reached. And when the battery is actually low, the warning comes again....
odinata Make sure you are setting the alarm for the right battery values. (internal vs. external battery voltage, cells and cell etc) Best of luck with it.
Painless360 The funny thing is that it goes off right when I turn it on *regardless* of the whether I set the value as greater than or less than..... Very odd. Thank you for your help and kind words. I just flew my first real multirotor in the past week. Scratch built (well, a kit). I have found my calling! And this channel is by far my favorite.
Painless360 Also, I know it is referencing the LiPo of the model because the voltage readings match those diplayed on the OLED of the telemetry module plugged into the model, and the bars and numbers do indeed move in accordance with the depletion of the LiPo during flight...
I have been trying to follow your video 8/12. I have the Taranis Plus and have the Tele on page 13. I am using Vers 2.1.8 and this seems to give a different page outlay i.e , the word CELL is not there, it just said Cels Cels+ or Cels - The firmware on this page is quite differeant to yours. Any ideas why. Thanks for any help you can give. Ian M
Thanks for your fantastic instructions about this radio! I got many knowledge besides the very simple manual from the producer. I agree that it is a great radio. but I hope the producer could improve the radio's materials and components so that its quality can really be compared with Futaba and JR besides the functions.
Boyang I would agree, the challenge is that the functions relate to the firmware you are running on it so not everyone's radio works in the same way. I'd be happy to work with them to help write a better manual but until then this series should help.. Happy flying!
+TheDIYGuy Yes, but with a LOT of messing about. The new PixRacer (series coming to the channel in the New Year) should make it a lot easier.. stay tuned!
hey lee... I have a new problem, I was searching the net for it and found someone else describing it on GitHub... I installed a vario on my bix, have everything working but when I turn SG to the up pos it should give me alt in ft... instead it giving mah? not feet! on the telemetry screen ... sensor=alt it says ft. I tried changing it to different thing and when I set it to % it "says " ft when I flip SG on.... any idea whats going on... now, i'm using the simulator and i'm not connected to the x8r, shouldn't matter? what do you think is wrong? opentx 2.1.8, amber sound pack for 2.1... thanks, bob
How odd, I started to read this and thought, 'Hmmm, sounds like the sounds pack hasn't been upgraded' but you have! I've not got this sensor at the moment so can't try - I'll look to get one to try. I'd mention it in the OpenTX support forums in the mean time.. Let me know if you figure out what it is. Best of luck..
i'll keep digging, if you could pickup a vario and test it that would be great... I tried scrolling thru the different units that can be chosen and there are a few that when used say the wrong value... here is a link to the problem that has a better description: github.com/opentx/opentx/issues/2617thanks
I'm planning to, it's on the list of sensors to get to.. I don't imagine it'll be in the next month or two as we've got load of new tech (goggles, HD FPV, cameras, models, radios..) to talk about! Happy flying!
hey lee... found the problem... back on 6-22-16 I upgraded to 2.1.8... I also upgraded the amber pack to 2.1.. but somehow the 2.1 pack I downloaded was not 2.1... after much checking of sound files I reinstalled the amber pack I found at opentx.org, files 0139 and 0140 were playing the milliamp thing when they should have been playing foot and feet!... apparently this has happen to people who failed to upgrade the sound files... don't know how it happen to me... got a bad download???? anyway... alls good... thanks for the response!!bob
Hi there Painless, I have OpenTX 2.2.1 can you please, please make a video on how to get telemetrie because I cannot get it to work. I am NOT a pc nerd so I have very little skills on getting info or working in the cli. cheers.
If you Google something like 'OpenTX telemetry Painless360' you'll find my video later in this playlist that covers it.. ruclips.net/video/1YcsBjmxHwM/видео.html
is this the same process with newer rx's like x4r and xsr? i have mah consumption, and vfas voltage alarms, but would love low cell alarm as well. thanks
Almost, OpenTX 2.1 needs you to 'discover' the sensors first. Also, you need to connect the S.Port pin on the receiver to the RX and TX pins of the UART you're using.. Best of luck!
thanks much for the reply. i followed your video and have s port connected with uart. "discover new" and A1 and A4 sensor popped up. made logical switch for A1 which looked like voltage for a single cell, but no alarm was activated when i tested. but i did try all this without updating firmware, so will try again tomorrow when off shift
I see why i was confused , It shouldn't be called a receiver but a transceiver if its bi-directional. Now i am wondering what range is the transceiver capable of ?do they list the power?
@@Painless360 I still wont buy it yet till i see some specs, and reviews .I bought something that claimed 50 meters . tried it ,only got 10 meters. Alot of lying sacs of ___ in the pot these days
I've flown to the very edge of LOS and the telemetry stays solid. That's hundreds of meters.. see my videos on flying further. Best of luck as you do your research.
Hi, I've lost ALT, RSSI, CELLS, CELL the only value telemetry wise I have to choose is Batt & Time, I've updated to NON Eu firmware and installed non eu firmware on my X8R, X6R, X4R and yet none those above telemetry are showing for me to select. Do you know why or whats happened and even shed some light on how I can fix this please? Many thanks
Friederrich Eggeling I dont have it anymore but I did yes If I remember I used opentx companion 1.9 or 2.0 Not 2.1 then put firmware on radion and it all came back I could use RSSI etc. Sorry I couldn't be more help
+john humphreys If you are using OpenTX 2.1 or later you need to 'discover' the sensors in the telemetry screen first (with the Rx and model powered) then use what the radio can see in the other menus..
Hi I use 2.0.19 and my reading fore power+ has only 3 digits but my plane goes above 2000 watt, so I mise ?xxx in my screen, How can I program this???thanks for help. grts
Hi I recently bought a Taranis plus and the D4R-2 for my first build, the problem is that the radio has the Eu software so its impossible to change it to D8 so it won't bind the D4R can anyone help, is there a solution to this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
+Painless360 Hi i checked out your vid on updating the firmware I got right to the last stage then got the error message that the firmware was not compatible with the one installed, even after I selected the Taranis plus in openTX. Is this the vid you refer to or is there another one. Appreciate your help I'm new to the hobby and this is my first build so its a steep learning curve. Cheers Gav
+Gavin Dean The transmitter firmware is not the same as the operating system (OpenTX). You can flash the Tx firmware if needed using the same process as I show in the X8R firmware upgrade video.
i have an x4r-sb connected to an SP racing F3 mini for telemetry and today set my radio up to read back my altitude, but instead of feet its reading it announcing it as mAh... it is set as feet in telemetry and displays properly on the screen, what could cause this?
i'll double check but i have not changed them from what came with the radio. i ended up just renaming the two offending files even tho all of the types are wrong...
I had this problem with the Amber soundpack i fixed it by going into the SOUNDS/SYSTEM folder in the taranis pull out files 0133, 0134, 0139, 0140 put 0133 and 0134 in one folder and 0139 and 0140 in another folder rename 0133 to 0139 and 0134 to 0140. Then just vice versa with your other 2 files 0139 to 0133 and 0140 to 0134 then replace in SOUNDS/SYSTEM. This will swap your milliamp milliamps and feet foot sound file locations and fixed my problems.
I finally found the Amber 2.1 pack it was hard to find for me but if using the 2.0 with 2.1 you can fix the problems the way I described the mah feet are backwards and i think millionths and something else but i never used that one.
The entire telemetry system was changed in V2.1 of OpenTx, see the other comments for tips. You need to 'discover' the available telemetry values as a first step. We will be doing a video on the new Telemetry system now the bugs seemed to have been worked out..
+Painless360 H, I've lost ALT, RSSI, CELLS, CELL the only value telemetry wise I have to choose is Batt & Time, I've updated to NON Eu firmware and installed non eu firmware on my X8R, X6R, X4R and yet none those above telemetry are showing for me to select. Go to the telemetry section of the menu and you will now have a 'discover sensors' that you need to do with the receiver and model on so that the radio can 'see' what you can access.. then it should work in a very similar way..
@@martinkoch4332 I think you are correct....the little white plug on the side goes to a flight controller. All the other pins are the servo channels. The connections would be very special, since they are marked channel 1,2,3,4 and have no information about how to hook them up to a battery voltage sensor. I also can find no information about a special connection that would enable your D4R-2 to ttransmit telemetry without using a flight controller.
@@Painless360 Since the D4r-2 has no Smartport, and the Lipo voltage sensor requires a Smart Port to deliver telemetry , the connections would indeed have to be very special. So special in fact that no one has any information about how to hook up a d4r-2 to a Lipo sensor on any receiver without a smart port....
Great Video series! A lot of really great information. I am really new to this hobby and I have a quick question if anyone can help me. I have the FrSky Taranis with the x8r receiver. I am using the NAZE 32 flight controller with this setup on my QAV250. I recently started to figure out telemetry setup and now every time I power up my device I get an "A1 Critical" alarm constantly from my taranis and I have no idea what that really means or how to fix it. Can anyone help?
Phillip Byrd How did you get the telemetry working. I also have a X8R and a cleanflight naze32, but I can't seem to get smartport telemetry working. Could the A1 be one of the ADC inputs on the naze32, like the ADC12_IN5 in: www.abusemark.com/downloads/naze32_rev3.pdf ?
Johan Bloemberg See github.com/cleanflight/cleanflight/blob/master/docs/Telemetry.md Bottom line - SmartPort support is a hack at the moment. Hope this helps.
I'd check the audio files and check the read-mes for OpenTX for audio changes. Also forums.metageek.com/showthread.php?2968-RSSI-is-NOT-equal-to-Signal-Strength-(dBm) Best of luck
Aww Crap,I had a brain fart, that new X12 radio has a GPS display,I'll be able to see the direction I'm going on my screen with that X6R rx hopefully!! Aww this is getting really good!
Some do. My experience here is that the RSSI can fluctuate wildy as antenna alignment changes as you fly about causing the alarm to go off more than when you want it to.. Happy flying!

p.s had a laugh every time i heard cell S. lol.
In the range for cells at 17.29, why do you set the maximum as 25.5v, obviously it works but I'm trying to understand the logic here, wouldn't full voltage be more appropriate, ie 12.6v for 3S?
Keep watching, all is explained Im the series. It's all about how the analogue telemetry part works..
Great video as always but have you any plans to update it please?
The A2 Range setting has now been replaced with a Ratio setting instead and the alarm functions have now disappeared (OpenTX version 2.2.3)
Updated versions later in the series already.. See note in description.. happy flying!

I think we did look at this in the OpenTX 2.1 videos later in the series...
Thanks.
Cou,d be a few things. I'd delete old logs in case there is a room issue and watch for an SD card issue.. best of luck
on my menu in the logical swith section...i have no "cells" selection? just one that says "batt", but that is for the battery in the radio. am i missing something?
Hi Lee, just wondered if it is possible to use INAV to send the telemetry back to the Taranis - i'm running an F722 FC board and the latest INAV. Thanks.
Yes, see my INAV for beginners 2020 series.
@@Painless360 thanks Lee. Will take a look.
Thanks.
I'd check on the version of OpenTX you're using as I do recall this changing over some of the releases.. Best of luck!
Hey Lee, I was in Companion and clicked the button that "sync sd "??? not sure what I did... what did it sync sd ?? Thanks, Bob
I imagine that it simply copies all the changes back to the SD card in the radio and vice versa. What does it say in the help file?

Any of the standard FrSky reciever should do that.. Best of luck
Thanks for the question, I think we have covered that in the series already.. Happy flying!
Painless360 . O, sorry, I'll check it more carefully.
With the X series receivers do you still need the smartport Lipo Voltage Sensor to monitor individual cell voltages?
Yes you do. See out video recently released. Best of luck!
You keep saying 8XR.
Isn’t it a X8R ?
All your taranis videos are excellent, the best and thank you.

Excellent. Bullseye! That was extremely helpful. Thank you.
+Bill Sheley have you found a answer to this? I have the same problem :-(
I wouldn't upgrade until it's all fixed.. Keep watching the posts and hopefully the telemetry will get easier in 2.1.x..
Great tutorials! I had one question: How are you getting the individual cell voltages on the taranis? I'm also using the same battery test module, but on the taranis, I only have "Cells" and "Cell." How did you get the individual cell voltages at 13:23?
If you're using OpenTX 2.1 then you may need to create additional sensors to show the cell voltages.. I'll add that to the list for future videos..
+Painless360 great thanks! In the meantime, what are the variable names for the individual cells? I'll try adding them to see if I receive the values on the taranis... Thanks!
You need to create the new values using the sensor you have..
Cheers
What is MAVLink and what is the use of AUX ports in Pixhawk if we're already using telemetry?
See our videos on MAVLink. It's another telemetry protocol (like MSP in Cleanflight) that is used by lots of systems. Happy flying!

+Painless360 hi, i was looking for options to get telemetry of my pixhawk on to my taranis. it seems there is a option to get the mavlink telemetry on to your taranis. but the vids i find for doing that are not really clear to me. i use a 3dr radio and a minimosd on my pixhawk for the moment but like to get the telemetry down to my taranis to wen i fly without a ground station or fly line of sight instead of fpv. alsow it would be nice to get the rssi from my taranis on to my minimosd and 3dr radio as well. now i only got radio rssi on my taranis itself. can you help plz? i am using d4r-2 reciever. i alsow have a x6r ass well but i like the small one better. but maybe there is a sollution for the smartport to px4? so i dont need to use the telemetry port on my px4? than maybe i will consitter using the big receiver. but as it is now i use the small one on my 450 sice quad. cheers!
We've not tried it here but the best explanation is here ardupilot.org/copter/docs/common-frsky-telemetry.html. Best of luck with it..
yeah thanks! i go for the seral 4/5 option i think, as then the tx level of the telemetry port is not getting pulled down as i already experience some issues with that using both minimosd and 3dr radio at the same time. and i got a buffer in it to but dois not seem to help. i remember u have a vid that shows how to sent the rssi of the taranis over channel 8 to the pixhawk right? sorry been out of the hobby for about a year, having a hard time remembering all the things i once learnt... cheers!

Thanks for the faceplant!
You could look at MW_OSD running on an MinimOSD style board but I'm not sure that shows S.Port data.. I'd use iNav for what you're looking at..
So use Inav just as an osd and stick to voice prompts. Shame frsky has not made something to bring these all together. Thanks for the advice
Do I have to download an extra file to my Taranis to get "Cell & Cells" to show up on the telemetry screen. If not why do you think it's not showing up. Thanks
I am using 2.0.17 OpenTX in this series. I bet you're not..
I'm using 2.1.6 . Would I find that only on 2.0.17?

OK. I'll check it out. Thanks again.
Can the FrSKy smartport Lipo Voltage Sensor be used with the D4R-II receiver in CPPM mode ?

Hi Lee, I am using OpenTx firmware version 2.2.0. When I go to the “Display” page, under Screen 1, important parameters such as RSSI, Cell, Cells, do not appear among the parameters that can be selected. Any explanation? Could it be the firmware version 2.2.0 ?
You need to 'discover' the telemetry senors first in the telemetry page on the radio. This changed dramatically from OpenTX 2.1. This is all covered in my OpenTX 2.2 videos. Hope they help :D
Painless360 Great as always Lee. Going straight to your V2.2 videos.
i updated my taranis and cell option don't exist more. just cels, cels + and cels -. do you know what happened?
Watch the series ;) it's all covered later when we look at the changes in OpenTX 2.1 where the telemetry changed drastically from that shown in the video here. Best of luck!
Found the video!
I've followed the instructions, and now I have an odd problem:
As soon as I turn on my Transmitter, I get the verbal warning "Battery Low".
Its not. And the bars don't show it to be, and the marker on the bar is not reached.
And when the battery is actually low, the warning comes again....
odinata Make sure you are setting the alarm for the right battery values. (internal vs. external battery voltage, cells and cell etc)
Best of luck with it.
Painless360
The funny thing is that it goes off right when I turn it on *regardless* of the whether I set the value as greater than or less than.....
Is it reading the lack of model voltage before the telemetry kicks in then?
Painless360
Good idea. Maybe. I'll test that hypothesis.
If so, would it be a non-issue and I would just have to live with it?
I have been trying to follow your video 8/12. I have the Taranis Plus and have the Tele on page 13. I am using Vers 2.1.8 and this seems to give a different page outlay i.e , the word CELL is not there, it just said Cels Cels+ or Cels - The firmware on this page is quite differeant to yours. Any ideas why. Thanks for any help you can give. Ian M
+Ian Mallett See later in the series if you're using 2.1.. Best of luck!
How far forward. Do you have a video number or are you in the process of recording one. Thanks Ian
All in there, we carefully arrange all of the videos into easy to use playlist and also add lots of tags to make them searchable too. Best of luck!
Dose this sensor also work with the s8r?
The S8R has SmartPort so you'll need a Smartport sensor. Best of luck!
Do you have an update video for us currently, with OpenTx 2.x.x.x?
I am so lost now. Its all different.
Very different.
+odinata yes we do, see later in the series/playlist ;? Best of luck!
I do have the version 2.1.7 and won't show me options to do cell value.

can you get lipo and satellite telemetry information from pixhawk?
+TheDIYGuy Yes, but with a LOT of messing about. The new PixRacer (series coming to the channel in the New Year) should make it a lot easier.. stay tuned!

hey lee... I have a new problem, I was searching the net for it and found someone else describing it on GitHub...
I tried scrolling thru the different units that can be chosen and there are a few that when used say the wrong value... here is a link to the problem that has a better description: github.com/opentx/opentx/issues/2617thanks

hey lee... found the problem... back on 6-22-16 I upgraded to 2.1.8... I also upgraded the amber pack to 2.1.. but somehow the 2.1 pack I downloaded was not 2.1... after much checking of sound files I reinstalled the amber pack I found at opentx.org, files 0139 and 0140 were playing the milliamp thing when they should have been playing foot and feet!... apparently this has happen to people who failed to upgrade the sound files... don't know how it happen to me... got a bad download???? anyway... alls good... thanks for the response!!bob

is this the same process with newer rx's like x4r and xsr? i have mah consumption, and vfas voltage alarms, but would love low cell alarm as well.
Hello again. Thank you for all your help. Do you have anything about how calibrate the variometer? Mine, at sea level is -115m
I'm sure you can reset the altitude for that thing in OpenTX, I've not got one here so unfortunately I can't test it. If I get one, I'll make a video!
Painless360 thank you
I've just ordered one from BG, so when it's here I'll play! :D
Painless360 I'm looking forward for it
I see why i was confused , It shouldn't be called a receiver but a transceiver if its bi-directional. Now i am wondering what range is the transceiver capable of ?do they list the power?

Hi I recently bought a Taranis plus and the D4R-2 for my first build, the problem is that the radio has the Eu software so its impossible to change it to D8 so it won't bind the D4R can anyone help, is there a solution to this.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Is this the vid you refer to or is there another one.
Appreciate your help I'm new to the hobby and this is my first build so its a steep learning curve.

+John Palombi wrong version of the sound files?
i'll double check but i have not changed them from what came with the radio.
i ended up just renaming the two offending files even tho all of the types are wrong...
There are two versions of the Amber pack - one for OpenTX 2.1, another for OpenTX 2.0. You need to make sure you're using the right one..
I finally found the Amber 2.1 pack it was hard to find for me but if using the 2.0 with 2.1 you can fix the problems the way I described the mah feet are backwards and i think millionths and something else but i never used that one.
Hi in OpenTX 2.1.7 It seems like the CELLS and CELL telemetry options are missing ? how can i fix it ?
The entire telemetry system was changed in V2.1 of OpenTx, see the other comments for tips. You need to 'discover' the available telemetry values as a first step. We will be doing a video on the new Telemetry system now the bugs seemed to have been worked out..
+Painless360 waiting for the new video :D Thanks for all the video you upload. It has helped me a lot, and sure many others people also !!!

Go to the telemetry section of the menu and you will now have a 'discover sensors' that you need to do with the receiver and model on so that the radio can 'see' what you can access.. then it should work in a very similar way..
How DO you hook it up to a D4R-II WITHOUT a flight controller?
Wiring Diagram....
Nothing special about the connections. Just remember the telemetry isn't Smartport (see video on Frsky sensors). Happy flying
@@Painless360 As far as I can find through my research, you CANNOT get battery cell voltage telemetry to a Taranis radio from a D4R-II....
So special in fact that no one has any information about how to hook up a d4r-2 to a Lipo sensor on any receiver without a smart port....
amazing thank you
Great Video series!
Johan Bloemberg See github.com/cleanflight/cleanflight/blob/master/docs/Telemetry.md
Bottom line - SmartPort support is a hack at the moment.
Hope this helps.
Hi. When i set my RSSI callouts, the taranis say minutes not db ? how cani fix that ?
What have you already tried?
Nothing. When I using one of the switches for callouts, it says forexample 60 minutes instead of DB. weird ?
But the number is correct, it is the Rssi callout, but the last Word is Minutes instead of db.
I'd check the audio files and check the read-mes for OpenTX for audio changes. Also forums.metageek.com/showthread.php?2968-RSSI-is-NOT-equal-to-Signal-Strength-(dBm)
Best of luck
Aww Crap,I had a brain fart, that new X12 radio has a GPS display,I'll be able to see the direction I'm going on my screen with that X6R rx hopefully!! Aww this is getting really good!
Why don't people set up low RSSI alarm?
Some do. My experience here is that the RSSI can fluctuate wildy as antenna alignment changes as you fly about causing the alarm to go off more than when you want it to.. Happy flying!
