Josh Huisman is joined by Rick Florian of White Heart for episode 7 of The Josh Huisman Podcast.
If Josh had to pick one Christian band from the 80s and 90s that was his favorite, it would have to be White Heart, or Whiteheart, depending of which era you take their name. And if there was one lead singer he'd pick from that era to front a band, it would be Rick (Ric, Rikk, Riq, Ricke, Rhic, Rikcq, Ricque) Florian!
In this episode Josh and Rick will discuss Rick's time as the lead singer of the band. They'll talk about some of the most well-known White Heart songs and dig a little deeper into the message behind them. This is a must-watch episode for fans of 80s and 90s Christian Rock!

I was there when he met his first wife for the first time. He was only weeks into the "Don't Wait for the Movie" tour doing the Christian music festivals. When he got off the bus he was wearing beach shorts and a pajama shirt. After sound checks he was summoned by the festival merchandising director (his first wife) and as he walked from the soundstage to the merch tent, a gaggle of girls followed him all the whole way. Naturally, we were laughing. The one thing I thought was weird about that concert is that the White Heart road crew (at the time) didn't seem very interested in work. They all had styled hair and nice clothes (Why?) as if they themselves were doing the performing. Rick looked like he had just crawled outta bed.

Highlands was the very first album (CD) I bought with my own money. I'm a '78 baby and would have been about 15 years old. Whiteheart had a massive impact on me musically and spiritually, along with Petra, as I became a self-taught drummer, played in an amateur Christian band and on worship teams. Rick's vocals were so very powerful - incredible tone and emotion, which beautifully contrasted with Mark's vocals. I can't say enough about the gratitude I have for both Whiteheart and Petra, and how Scriptural truth was instilled deep within me through the medium of their music. I'm one of the weirdos that still listen to these bands regularly even today - much to my wife's chagrin ;) . Good music doesn't ever get old. Don't ever be ashamed of your emotion, Rick. I so appreciate your heart, brother.

I discovered White Heart in 1984 and have been a fan ever since! I only had two opportunities to see them live - in 1986 and 1992. Both great concerts!

I watched this and listened intently. Rick tried to downplay his tendency to cry easily. But I analyzed the context of the moments when his eyes welled up in this interview, and it became evident to me that his heart simply breaks for things that matter, which aren't actually things; he clearly has a heart for people who are hurting. I hope Rick is aware that it is a gift from the Spirit.

I'll never forget the times I was able to see Whiteheart in concert. The talent and anointing was undeniable! Freedom is still one of my favorite albums ever and I still listen to it via iTunes. A huge thank you to Rick and the boys for following their calling and touching so many lives.

Thank you for this awesome interview. I had the privilege attending a Whiteheart concert in South Africa - April 1994. It was one of the best Gospel concerts I attended. The song "His Heart Was Always In It." was played 3 times that day and every time I could experience the anointing of the Holy Spirit. The concert was also shown live on national TV, something that never happened before in South Africa. The concert was at the Rand Easter Show and I was a Youth-worker in the South African Police Force at that time. I managed to have coffee bar at the show and we could reach many people with the Gospel.

I was delighted (corny word) to find this interview with Rick. I am still a diehard Whiteheart fan to this day. I am very blessed by the things that the two of you discussed and it means so much to me to hear Rick talk about his deep faith and convictions. You mentioned another interview/podcast with Gordon, Gersh and Rick? How can I find that one? Thank you so much for doing this. I subscribed to your channel

White Heart is one of my favorite all time groups. Rick's singing voice is forever stuck in my head.😊 I love that even he had to think hard to remember some of the lyrics😅 . Freedom is my favorite album, only second to The Moody Blues Days of Future Past! 🎉🎉

I was a youth pastor in eastern MO back in the mid-late 80's and was QUITE the Whiteheart groupie. If the band was within a 3 hour drive, I was there. And most times, I took some of my youth kids with me. LOVED Whiteheart then and still am a huge fan now. Thanks for this interview with Ric (If I remember correctly, he used this instead of Rick at the time!?!).

I worked Atlanta Fest back when it was happening and would interact with many of the musicians and speakers backstage and in the kitchen area. So many of the artists were superficial and downright phony in their walk with Jesus. I enjoyed interacting with those who were genuine and walked the walk. Rick and those in the group were very much the real thing. I remember being at the front of the stage one day where the group was playing during daytime when AF was at Six Flags. We had just removed the plastic from the monitors and stage equipment follow a rain storm. Rick comes flying on stage to start the show and slipped on the plastic and ended up on his back with his legs dangling over the edge. He didn’t miss a beat and started singing laying there at the front of the stage while attempting not to laugh. I wish I could attend a Whiteheart show now. My favorite song of WH is Once and For All. Good to see you Rick.

Rick Florian is a very nice, outgoing guy, when he preferred to keep the reason for the ex-White Heart lead singer's termination for the band, absolutely private, to prevent listeners from knowing it, I respected that, when he was opened to the same story, about how he got the job as the lead singer of White Heart, and how, for being the very young, unfamiliar Christian that he was, when I was just a kid, he got to do, almost everything, besides singing, he would also dance, act crazy, lip-sync and share messages to everybody. God gave Rick the gift, and stayed with White Heart, until the band was over.

I remember watching it on VHS tape imported here to Brazil in the 80s, in my opinion White Heart changed the scene of Christian music in the world, bringing a simple message of Christ in its songs.
