As Guts got older and self-actualized in the Conviction Arc right up into Elfheim, he obviously was showing signs of happiness and relief at the prospect of returning Casca's mind back to the way it was. How could he not be happy in those moments? Just because you experience immense suffering doesn't mean you will never experience happiness again. It just matters how you project that happiness onto yourself and onto others.
Guts had one of the most difficult childhoods, the eclipse arc was literally hell and misfortune, he lost everyone, his wife, his "friend", and the hawk flock, and now even the creator, RIP.MIURA

There are two scenes in berserk that will always stick with me The first is one is after guts fell off his horse while gambinos friends were chasing him, and he was lying in the shallow water contemplating if he should stand up and struggle, even though he basically had no hope of survival, and no one to turn. He still stood up and even fought off a wolf while his life was practically worthless. And by the end of the golden there's a scene where all of his comrades are asking him if they could join him. These two scenes really helped me out during a dark period of my life. It shows that even though there doesn't seem to be hope for you. You should still struggle, because better days are coming
