    New film photographers may look at this and think it's 'too sharp, too clinical, too realistic' but those who grew up with film and know it well have always wanted this kind of resolution. It's almost unbelievable what we can do with the M camera now, coupled with such a spectacular performing sensor and lens(s) combination. Can't wait to get my hands on one.

    • @lensman5762
      @lensman5762 Год назад

      I grew up with film, 50 years ago. I never wanted and still don't need this sort of resolution. When I needed it, it was provided by MF cameras. Digital is a valid medium, but the sooner people stop comparing it to film the better everyone will be. There is more to photography than resolution and sharpness, unless your idea of photography is 60MP of junk. Monchrome sensors have their place, but for the average Joe, a ' colour ' sensor is a much more flexible proposition, unless they shoot in the dark.

      @@lensman5762 So there were points you needed the resolution but had to bring around a medium format camera to get it. Well then you're welcome for the smaller cameras with that resolution power now

    I can't see a massive improvement over the M10M, except you can use 50.000 whereas for night shots on my M10M I never go beyond 12.500. Blown highlights at night from street lamps is always a problem, however much you underexpose. Love your enthusiasm, Nick. My M10M completely eclipsed my original M10, which I barely use. Just love black and white.

    I have lusted after a m11 monochrom after aquiring and loving my Q3. My drawback is the volume of complaints I have seen in youtube reviews and reddit comments is about firmware problems including freezing, and even complete shut downs requiring return of cameras to the factory. Your thoughts please?

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  6 дней назад

      Most of the freezing issues were with the M11. The M11P, M11 Mono and M11D were never as vulnerable to this. Plus there was a firmware update recently which fixed many of these issues. Some freezes were to do with SD card incompatibility; I am reliably told that if an incompatible SD card is inserted now, the camera will report this to the user.

    Hi Nick, M10 and SL2-S shooter here. Many thanks for this M11 Monochrom presentation and review, to me it is the best all over the internet. And it tempted me to purchase one. It is a huge investment, do you mind to add a download link to some sample DNGs to the description? I’d really appreciate and it would offer the possibility to pixel peep that monochrome raw files myself. I’m specially interested in one of those ISO 25000 or even ISO 50000 DNGs how they will look on my Studio Display. I’ve already seen other samples (on YT only) they all were looking kinda flat, specially the daytime/daylight ones. Did you use a yellow or even orange filter to get those crisp results sooc?

    I just realised that Leica is giving FREE samples instead of TEST samples to reviewers worldwide. To be honest, Nick deserves FREE samples from Leica way more than other reviewers as far as skills and experience are concerned. Now whenever I consider to purchase a Leica gear I would refer to Nick's (instead of those other reviewers) videos as a guideline.

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  Год назад +3

      Trust me, no-one gets free cameras! People might get a some good deals but those of us who continue to use the cameras or lenses past the review periods have to put our money where our mouths are, so to speak.
      But thanks for the vote of confidence!

    I am a Leica fan boy - I have far more Leica cameras both film M's Digital M's and SLs than I would ever want to admit to but I am really sorry that to me and of course this is just my opinion and not set in stone, the whole Leica Monochrom series of cameras are vastly over hyped. Yes they give wonderful grain free images at crazy ISO levels BUT with respect I don't want that - in a monochrome image from a digital camera, I want it to as near as possible replicate traditional film and not a boring flat grainless result. I think that at the end of the day Leica are chasing the wrong thing here - who needs to shoot at 200,000 ISO or even at 50,000 ISO - I want to shoot as with film at ISO400 and at the most ISO1600 like I do with pushed TRI-X ISO400. I could not care less how clean and grain free the Leica Monochrom file is because it looks faux and like what it is - a digital CMOS file and sadly the Leica Monochrom (I have two) is not the best (to me) monochrome image. The original Fuji X-Pro1 gives the very best monochrome images in both look and "FEEL" closely followed by the original Leica digital M8/M8.2 cameras. Only my opinion and I am absolutely not knocking Leica - I love Leica cameras and have impoverished myself many times to buy them and I absolutely accept that my need being brought up on film and still a massive user of Leica M3/2/6/MP/111F film cameras will not be the same as a new user who never used traditional film. I learned to live with film's limitations and ISO 400 TRI-X and Ilford HP5Plus shot at ISO 400 are and always were my mainstay! Having said all that I am really glad for Leica that they are making these cameras and as we are all different, for me I will pass on the M11 Monochrom and invest in a re-issued 2022 M6!

      You might want to try a Q2 or M11 Monochrom camera before condemning them.
      I have several Leica cameras (M6 TTL, digital CL, M11, and SL2). I also had a Q2M and absolutely loved the quality of the files I got with it. I sold the Q2M last year with considerable regret, but I knew I’d eventually get an M11M to take advantage of all the M lenses I have (and that camera arrived yesterday).

    • @danielcoburn7696
      @danielcoburn7696 Месяц назад

      I agree but I believe it takes monochrome photography into a new era. Comparing it to HP5 or Tri X is interesting and yes film has soul but digital monochrome is just different. I owned an M10M but ultimately didn’t take to it because I can’t commit solely to B&W photography. If I decide to only shoot B&W in the future I will definitely consider a Monochrome camera.

    M8 is STILL THE BEST Monochrome camera giving a much nicer film like feel to the image. The Mon ochroms have a very DIGITAL look to the images - fine if you like "chocolate boxy" flat images SOC. Yes when processed in Silver FX or equivlent then they do look good BUT the M8 STILL can easily hold it's own to any of the Leica Monochroms in making a great film like image to replicate Kodak TRI-X in PROPER Photojournalism and not a horrible grain free TMAX look with zero "feel" to it, I have them all so I do know what I am talking about and I absolutely speak from personal use of these cameras.

    smoke from say a steam locomotive looks good with a Monochrom, with an ordinary camera, the smoke only shows about four grades of grey, with the Monochrom, you would get many shades of grey, likewise with clouds and steam.

    I knew that these Bayer filters were no good. I am intending to order 3 of these bodies, one for the glovebox, one for my rucksack and the other for my bookshelf. Given that the Bayer filter is missing I am a little surprised that the price has increased. Becoming more obsessed with monochrome, I have also just ditched out relatively new OLED TV, buying an old black & white TV as a replacement. A little boxy, but worth travelling back in time. Anyway, if any of my relatives and friends prefer colour images, they can always use colour creation software.

    The price is nuts ! It hasn’t even got autofocus, and sigma are now making equally good lenses. Let be honest the print is the weakest part of the process, it can only be so sharp. 99% of people do not need 40 mega pixels. As for the built in storage, what does that cost, probably next to nothing. Is noise that much of a problem these days, Lightroom can now remove it with AI. But it was a good sales pitch.

    Thumbs down for each time you pronounce it as „ISO“. 👎🏾

    • @LeicaCameraAustralia
      @LeicaCameraAustralia  Год назад +4

      It's funny how often this comes up in the comments!
      ISO is the abbreviation for the International Organization for Standardization - it is not an acronym, which would have to be “IOS”. This abbreviation was chosen because the translation of the title into different languages leads to different abbreviations, so one was declared official, with “ISO” justified on the ISO website as being “derived from the Greek isos, meaning equal”. This choice of abbreviation has led to confusion. Looking at photography books on my shelves, I find that many state that ISO is an abbreviation for the “International Standards Organization”. This is what you would guess if you reverse engineer the abbreviation, but it is not correct.
      There is no reason to pronounce ISO letter by letter. It is a pronounceable word, just like GIFF, NATO, and UNESCO.
