    Your videos are absolutely wonderful. I watch every one. I love my M10 monochrom with 50mm apo but it’s good to see Leica pushing. I need another few years with this combination as it still humbles me. Best wishes from Australia.

    Glad to hear you say “don’t retire your M10Mono if you are satisfied”. It is unfortunate that Leica previously made mechanical cameras that lasted 20+ years but is now satisfied declaring their digital cameras “less than the best” after just 3 years.

      There is very little difference from what I see, I have the Q2 mono and did a comparison to my A7C with a good contrasty zeiss loxia lens shooting in B&W, and the difference is negligible

    • @314LA
      @314LA Год назад

      The pictures are very close. On m9 and m9m there were differences about 10 years ago, now there are almost none. And it is necessary to compare with the film too. Here's where it gets interesting that so far, film is better at capturing the light transition than a $10,000 camera.

    • @lowIQstuff
      @lowIQstuff 6 месяцев назад

      the irony here is that the M11 shoots better black and white images than the M11M, because the color sensor does a better job capturing contrast and highlight details.

    • @Wolfloid
      @Wolfloid 4 месяца назад

      The difference is large at 6400 and above, and increases as you go higher. Below that the difference is there, but it is minimal.

  • @rolandrickphotography

    Thanks for the detailed comparison. Just a hint from an old guy coming from the film era, if you screw a yellow filter to the lens, you get more sky contrast (blue tones subtle darkened) straight out of camera and also the skin of your model subtle smoothed. The effect is stronger with an orange filter and maxed with a red filter. Attention, models having blue eyes like Stefanie (or Stephanie) will get a „demonic“ (as I call it) look, because the iris turns towards black. I don’t have a M11M yet, but according to the underexposed 3 sec image, you probably can bring back the blue eyes brightness in post by placing two elliptical filters on the eyes pushing shadows and/or exposure slider to the right as well as clarity to bring back details. For landscape and cityscape, the red filter it is, most buildings have yellow/orange/red tones, they become really bright vs. an almost black blue sky, you can do night shot alike images during bright daylight. Doesn’t of course work on overcast days 😅. Greetings to Zürich and also the Leica Store guys from Principality of Liechtenstein 🇱🇮.

    I own the Q2m and I love it! The images are so crisp and filled with detail even at night. This m11m is tempting!! Obviously the glass in front is important as well.

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Год назад

      Fully agree, Ernesto. Sharp lenses make a real difference if a sensor can resolve so many details. If I see this correctly in Leica's commercials on the new M11 Mono, the new just released Summilux 50mm with improved near distance is likely a good candidate for the M11 Mono besides the lenses I already showed in the video.

    • @r423sdex
      @r423sdex Год назад

      @@mathphotographer can you buy a lens that's not sharp ? Remember if you make a print, all lenses will be sharp enough. All digital cameras offer great image quality and sharpness, even ones costing £300. Don't believe the hype! A 60 megapixels sensors will demand great techniques to get the benefits of it, you will need a top quality computer and plenty of storage.

    • @mathphotographer
      @mathphotographer  Год назад

      @@r423sdex Well ... depends on what "sharp" means for you. Sharpness, acutance and resolution - I guess for most people (not you and me) it is not really clear what "sharp" actually means. I made a video about the topic some time back. Your comment is in any case spot-on: A 60MP sensor is demanding, the photographer needs to work diligently, in particular since the M11 and M11 Mono do not have any image stabilisation incorporated. And post-processing needs quite some resources in terms of hardware. If you look around on my channel you will find that I also work with 150MP images (Phase One) or 100MP images (Hasselblad and Fuji). Luckily, the MacBook Pro these days, if well configured, can handle these high resolutions very well in post-processing in Capture One, Lightroom CC or Photoshop.

    Photo editors are going to love photographers who use cameras like this. They can crop away 75% of the pixels and still get a 15Mpx file. Insane.
    Nice photos of Stephanie. I think you can definitely place the subject in the middle of the frame - this has been recognised for a long time. Stanley Kubrick loved doing this! Photo editors (yes, those pesky photo editors again) might prefer it, as they can recompose the shot as required.
    One little trick I discovered for portraiture - reduce microcontrast in the RAW converter. Or use an old lens.
    I have a quick question: because monochrom files do not require debayering, do they load faster while viewing them in a RAW converter? I imagine that a 60Mpx RAW image will be as CPU intensive as a 30Mpx Bayer image.

    Thanks for the brief comparison of the M11M to the M10M. To my eyes, the image of the lefthand bridge (M10M) has a lot more "life" and visual interest than the righthand one (M11M). Is this possibly due to the greater exposure on the left one? Even the railing on the bridge in your last magnification looks much more interesting on the left? Perhaps you coule explore the comparison some more? Thanks!

I still have the option of returning but then I do away with the option of color (even its 0.1% of the time). Would you recommend returning the m11 and going for the m11 M instead? Or are the differences not noticeable between the m11 and m11 M in post processing?

      M11M native black & white is a bit superior to M11 and then converting into black & white. But if you once in a while also want to shoot in color, then the M11 is just great! I would not return the M11 but keep it. And conversion software into black & white is really good today, in prints you will hardly see the difference. Enjoy your camera :)

    You need to do a comparison on higher ISO on a scene that has some lack of light. That is where you will see the significant difference between M11 and M11M. At ISO 125 with 1/4000 of shutter tells me that you have plenty of light in the scene. I would like to see some 800, 1600, … 20k ISO on a scene that genuinely require those ISOs for hand holding a 35/50mm.

    OMG deeper pixels
    Hi Math, what are you doing to me ?
    Deeper pixels, a marketing buzz word invented by the marketing people of Sony a few years ago where the whole Photography community made fun about cause it is utterly BS, they even made T-shirt with that phrase to make fun out of it, and now you are using it.
    Your video is nice, as always, and plenty of shots to compare the different cameras that are some sort of competitors.
    However, when I would have got one euro for every time you said "sharp" I would have gotten an M11 Mono for free.
    SHARPNESS IS NOT THE MAIN THING OF A PHOTO !
    What I also miss is micro contrast in your story, where a mono camera can perform better under the same circumstances MP and of coarse with a proper lens (cause that is always more important than the camera).
    However I will always choose real dynamic range (not the marketing bla bla) over mega pixels.
    In a conversation with Peter Coulson some years ago that subject was pointed and he also would rather have a 40MP H6 with better dynamic range than a 100MP H6
    Also when shooting older lenses a lower MP is preferable (24-30 range) and will give you better results therefor the SL2-S with M adapter is so immense popular by people who understand this.
    This also the reason why e.g. Leica but also Canon and Nikon produce newer (same) versions of their older lenses just to get better performance with the nowadays high MP cameras.
    Now the Noctilux is not per definition the better lens, it is a lens with its own characteristic, something that is subjective, some people don't even like the output and I can quite understand that..
    Compared to everything else out there around F 1.0 the Noctilux however is king.
    Looking at your your shots around 30:00 of that nice young lady I miss micro contrast, maybe it is the pore performance of You Tube but the shot are rather flat to me, maybe you can send me link to look at it without the YT compression.
    I am although glad that you shot the evening shot 3 steps under exposed and set the exposure right in LR, that is the way I shoot in the dark when I need faster shutter speed and I try to avoid stepping up the ISO (ISO invariant, or almost, sensors give you that option and is often better than stepping up the ISO)
    But if you like to do that please use Capture One cause it has the lightness slider with give you so much more control e.g. over the dark skies especially when you shoot in color and want avoid chromatic noise in the blacks that can NOT be taken away complete by switching on a dedicated tool, I moved to C1 about 7 years ago also for that reason and about 100 more ;-).
    Exposure vs Brightness / One Reason Why Capture One is Better than Lightroom by Studio Builder explains this better than I could do in words.
    And setting up an EVF, if there is one, for me the most important thing is the histogram cause that is the real representation of the image to be shot.
    Finally, you don't need MP's to print big images. For years I worked with a print studio that printed for major Museums over here so quality was mandatory and we printed very large formats, bigger than you will ever use, from 50 MP, 24 MP sensors and even smaller all with great results.
    Okay, thanks for sharing and please forget about the deeper pixels for ever ;-)

      Oh my gosh, my dear friend RS, this is the longest comment I ever got on my channel, many thanks for taking the time! Content-wise your comment is highest quality and spot-on like always. And yes I know, you always remind me that dynamic range is so much more important than anything else - at least I have one section in the video on how well you can correct under-exposed images so that section will help me to get away with the video without feeling your critics too harshly ;) On Stephanie's face, the micro contrast is in the original RAW file but goes away with RUclips compression, sorry for that. I have the camera here in the studio and will do a deep dive on dynamic range, high ISO etc. with the new final firmware, my firmware was pre-production. On "deeper pixels" ... to be honest, I did not even know that this phrase was invented by Sony as you pointed out ;) I just use the phrase without a specific underlying definition but clearly can speak in more qualified ways about that in the future :) All the best like always and thanks for your comprehensive thoughts!

I know asked often- which of the M10 Mono or the M11 Mono is probably more organic if I can use that term? I have seen some say the m11 files are amazing and have a depth and range - but files have to be tweaked a little in post. For one that shoots in film and tries to do minimal in post- which of the cameras would need less post?

      @@mathphotographer the m11 has wonderful specifications. But I don’t know too many people that own Leica cameras only for specifications. I haven't shot b&w images for over 20 years but before that the majority of my photography was b&w with a Hasselblad ELM camera shooting (mainly) Tri-X or Plus-X 220 rolls. I still shoot with Hasselblads viz. X2D 100c, X1D 50C and 907X-50C. I doubt very much that I shall return to b&w photography but I am intrigued with these monochrome digital cameras. But there is something I'd like to ask you, Matt, that doesn't appear to have been mentioned. Can you use colour filters to get the same effects that one used to get using film? For instance, using yellow, orange or even red to enhance clouds or maybe green to bring out details in brickwork. Have you tried colour filters yet?

      Hello, I have X1D2 with the xpan mode, I must say I love the xpan crop very much, as I normally converted the photos to greyscale (not high contrast enough but with the vintage look close enough to original Xpan) in phocus by Hassi. I would like to know what is your experience of converting the monochrome photos , which is the best software, phocus? capture one? or LR? Thanks a lot

      @@BrilliantOberver Hello there. I'm an "old fashioned" Hasselblad photographer that is used to the square format which is one that I still prefer although I'm quite happy now with the 4x3 of the X cameras. So I have no experience with xpan formats. I never convert my colour photos to B&W. It may seem strange but in the old days when I shot b&w negative film I saw my photos in b&w even though the image in the viewfinder was in colour. So these new monochrome cameras would be an interesting experience for me actually seeing the images in b&w through the EVF. I process my RAW files in Phocus and then finish them off in an old Photoshop 7. This 20 year old version has all that I need to get my images the way I like. No fancy stuff, just the basics like cropping, levels, cloning and printing.

Use focus peaking and magnification and you will see that your images will be tack sharp. The multiplying factor is about 2,25, therefore 40 mpix Leica M10 mono sensor delivers same details/ resolution as 90 mpix color sensor. Anyway pixel count is 40 million, not 90 :)
