Great effort, poor result. This guy wasn't lazy. He was simply unskilled and following really bad advice. For future reference, can I give you a few pointers? 1. Pop the hood when working around edges and taping to spray. 2. Never use 120 grit on the car. 400-600 grit with a proper sanding block, sanding the WHOLE hood, then... 3. PRIME THE WHOLE HOOD. 2-3 coats with a "high build" primer. Wet sand that with 800-1000 grit sandpaper. 4. Paint the whole hood, using long, even strokes. 2-3 light coats work best. 5. Clear the whole hood, again using long even strokes. 6. Polish as necessary to remove overspray. It should feel smooth to the touch. LAST BUT NOT LEAST: if you really want to save time and trouble on large pieces, try to find a salvage piece in same color. Paint will match better because of fading, and it can be close to same cost with less effort. Just a thought. Seriously, not trying to beat on the guy. Just trying to help.
victor jolley hey yeah the work wasn’t perfect , what if there was another coat of paint then followed by a another series of clear coats ? Just to help with the bright spots
Victor jolley , how about when there’s peeled off paint on hood but you don’t wanna remove it all but only repair that spot and then repaint the whole hood without removing all the paint but only the peeled off paint , how ?? Should I use spray hondo on the part where I removed the peeled off paint or ??? I removed that spot , sanded it , sanded the whole hood but the overlap is still visible…. :( any recommendation?? Tips ?? Thx
You don't need to paint and sand the whole hood. You just need to fade it in properly by slightly expanding the area you work with, then finish by sanding with 800 grit over the whole area as well as a bit outside the area then finish with medium buffing
+ryan verdugo very right man!! i do this stuff in my black paint and stay FAR WORSE!! i spend 2 times the money!!! because ended up in new paint job!!! this may work in cheap paint and shit cars!! in my black shine paint stay with lots of holograms and paint car with spary can stays a mess!!! dont lose money 2 times... now i wash the car with good shampoo and protect with good wax and its fine
C’mon , give the the man some credit for trying. Not everybody has the funds to buy all the supplies needed. Hopefully his next project turns out better.
Fuck me I'm an expert sprayer and re-finisher if this is the standard I need to live up to. Why not just take the hood off and sand the whole thing down? You're supposed to be repairing lacquer not removing the base coat and then re-spraying.
A seamless paint match!! 😞🔫 If your going to use 120grit you may as well speed the process up by using a shotgun. The end result will be the same. You tube should have a quality control department to stop videos like this!
I think I need to see my eye dr. I swear I see every original peel. It looks mottled. Like deep sea camouflage. Please forward this video to the US Navy! JK! All kidding aside, I appreciate the individual's effort. If I'm gonna criticize, I must come up with suggestions. First, if you had better lighting w/o all that glare, you could see what the viewers are seeing, and done a more visually appealing job. Second, providing a spray on fill in primer would have helped even out color and surface imperfections. And third....you should use time lapse video or jump ahead. We get the message, we don't need to follow every second of scratch, scratch, scratch, tape, tape, tape, spray, spray, spray!! Jump ahead, condense time, and include the important stuff. We all know how to open a can of spray paint! Try again, you do have some good points to express. PS- I'd be afraid to start with 120 grit. Perhaps 300 - 600 grit. Takes longer, but it would avoid gouging or going too far below original paint layers. Not to offend, just IMO suggestions. Thx.
good effort, but all you had to do was wet sand the peeling clear coat with 800grit while trying to avoid the base paint. Then sand all the clear with 800 on a sander. afterwards was clear it and sand it. your base coat was fine. you didn't need to play around with it and mess it up with your improper sanding gauges.
+jay xu Your comment was what I was looking for in the first place. The base coat on my car looks ok, just the clearcoat popping up in a few places. Thanks.
I'm sorry, but that looks terrible, I would be surprised if that lasted more than a week before it started peeling again. If you're gonna spray the entire hood, you might as well take it down to bare metal, and at least use automotive paint.
I learned from trial & error to use progressively 1000-2000 grit wet sand paper to smooth clear coat edges without removing underlying paint layers, then wet sanding after 2-3 clear coat layers to remove orange peel & finally use both rubbing compound & polishing compound, which are absolute musts to get glass like appearance!
NEw title "WHY NOT to Easily fix a peeling clear coat with basic spray cans".Wasted 19 minutes and 17 seconds of my life to watch this!!.It looked better before he painted it!!.I would rather plastic dip it.And safety is number one as demonstrated on the video don't use any eye or face protectants inhale those chemicals. This would be okay for a old rust bucket car.
Hey mate, thanks for the video! Despite these children whining in the comments your video has been very useful to me. The metallic in your paint made it almost impossible to pull off without it being somewhat mismatched, but the end result is far better than what it was to start, and took at least 1/8th the time and money to respray the whole bonnet. For someone like me, with my 4wd and paint that will be easy to blend in I can quickly fix my problem for cheap... I watched all your ads and clicked the advertisers links so you would get at least a few cents for your efforts! Thanks again mate, here in aus we appreciate shortcut solutions. Good stuff
Hey, Ryan, give the guy a break. Not everyone in the world lives in America and has a rich Daddy to by him a Jeep - if you'd actually work for the life you enjoy, you would show more respect! This guy's technique is basically sound, he has been let down by a poor colour match from the spray can. At the end of the process, the clear coat would benefit from curing for a week then being carefully wet sanded with 2000 grade grit, then the shine restored with an electric polisher using a product like Farecla Finishing Compound.
Backyard mechanic 101....... How to fuck up n sprayjob completely. Nice job at miss guessing the colour of your own car, man........ I would rather let the clearcoat flake thanks......... LMAO
This video shows everyone exactly what not to do! I’m sure this guy meant well when he made it, but that doesn’t excuse all the mistakes he made. Do not waste your time viewing this because in no way will give you any kind of decent result. I’m sorry to trash this video but somebody have got to be the bad guy (I guess it’s me)! For everyone who says I’m wrong for doing it, KICK ROCKS WITH FLIP FLOPS!
I like this video.Although a better result can be achieved if you use less abrasive paper and take a little more time.If its uneconomical to use a paint shop on your car I think this is a good alternative.I have been doing spray can patch ups for years, the best way to get good results is not to put too much paint on at once, keep your arm moving and use many light coats no matter how tempting it is to continue spraying that spot. When starting spraying, spray onto a piece of card or newspaper and keep spraying before moving onto the car to help prevent paint spatter or too much paint in one area which can lead to paint runs which require you to let it dry, sand off and start again. This especially applies to clear coat which runs very easily and will take your fresh paint with it if you apply too much. You should also reverse this process when stopping.
Absolutely shocking I've work at landrover doing this type of work never skimp out on prep work foundation is key to an impressive finish. Please don't follow the advice in this video.
how I would do it: Sand off all the varnish and paint off the hood until its nearly bare metal. make on single coat of primer, sand it a bit with 800+ grit sand paper (that way I see all the imperfections and bumps). use a tiny bit of filler to fill all the imperfections and bumps. sand the filler with 800+ grit paper again (to even out the surface further). then put on 2 more coats of primer (just to make sure its all covered and also better result) then put on at least 3 coats of spray paint, wait until it dries, and one pretty thick layer of clear coat. (buffing isn't necessary if the painting was done well). that is what I did today, except that I worked on the roof of me car. looks really good now.P.S. I do respect the guy trying to help us with this problem and I did notice it said that it wont be perfect, so props to him for trying.
"The paint isn't perfect but the peeling dissappear" lmfao. Loved the polishing process. So impressive. Good job man you messed up that hood so bad it deserves a comment. But hey like magic "the peeling dissappear"
yes we all know you should just repaint a pilling hood. I don't care if 100 done right. what some one show us how to repair the clear coat with out base coat.
Now all that's left to do is remove the clear from the windshield & wait till next week for the rest of the clear coat to start peeling! Should of used that money for booze instead of cheap paint!!
LMFAO wow dude that really looks like shit...hahaha... 1 you should of just left it alone it was better.off 2 you should of took the hood off before ...wen using a spray can...... 3 you we're way to close with those cans buddy lmao don't quit your day job
not sure what people are on about , looks great for a spray bomb , not mirror finish but hey its not like you sold us the video as how to get shop quality , thanks man good upload
Well it did look worse. So A for effort. Thanks for the video I have a neon that looks terrible I think it might look just a little better If I can do half as good as u . thanks
I have done 2 green beater mercedes this same way. Makes a gorgeous 20footer. I don't fuck with tapin off. Is I get over spray or clearcoat on my windshield. I just put some gas in my windshield washer reservoir and the next big rain empty the tank on the windshield and it gets rid of paint and overspray! His car looks a little bit like a chameleon!
In the beginning : an old beater that takes you to work In the end : Look I'm an idiot who doesn't even know how to use sandpaper, plus I'm fooling myself that this car is worth the time.
Average cost of bonnet respray, 150 -300 average cost of proper paint to do this as a diy 120 plus about 2 days of crying and a terrible looking finish I know which I would go for. Poor car. Good try but next time spend more time on the sanding and for the love of God only only ever use 1500 max on clear coat.
I hate to say this but your angle of the camera is very bad it does not show any kind of scratches doesn't show details it doesn't show the real before and after if you put your angle on the camera on a different angle The view would be a lot better the angle of your camera is showing the reflections of the cloud and the sky and that's all you see on your paint it doesn't give a good appearance at all of your work.
A really crappy masking job…and the windscreen wasn’t covered at all. And the application of the paint and clear layer was really casual. Wouldn’t want them touching my car!
I think most of these comments are related to the very, very uneven coverage, the guy seems ok to accept. One doesn't expect a paint shop finish, but I think my 10 year old could have done better that that, it just looked sooooooo BAD.
You naysayers have it wrong. This must have been done correctly. The narrator has a British accent. I found it more entertaining with each passing second, Spoiler Alert. It doesn't look any better.
Way to save water!! And time.. who wants to spend all that time using a 2000 grit sand issue with water, and make it lion oerfect when ya can use a 100 grits and paper and skip the water. It’ll shred that clear coat , paint, and sometimes metal panels right off the car
TBH, the worst finish possible. A lot of hard work reasonably done and then the application of the spray can undo it all. You'd need ten cans of each. I used to use coach paint an simply paint it on with a brush and carry on regardless. A year of weathering an few knew the difference. Bad spraying shows up so badly.
hmmm, 2000 - 1000 grit sand paper and light clear coat the spots that are peeling would give better results then doing a entire bonnet with spray cans. You removed way to much going down to undercoat. Just needed to rough up the top to get the clear to bond then cut and polish it out. No need to use color cans etc, was painful to watch this. Sorry.
Wasted effort. He should have sprayed the whole bonnet then lacquered. Then he should have wet sanded with 2000 grit then polished with cutting compound. The result whould have been worth it.
Look, let's be honest here. This is not a tutorial you should follow unless you don't care about driving around in a botched paint job. But good on him for making an effort.
The VR switch it looks like shit bro you spent all that work doing that for Wife I’m sorry but it looks terrible my 10-year-old son killed a better job
Although the intent was good, the execution was horrible, should have sanded the whole hood, atleast to have a consistent paint coverage. Spray method was horrible, but got all the spots lol, more of a fluid motion would have worked. Horrible job but good video lol, and i do mean that lol
Great effort, poor result. This guy wasn't lazy. He was simply unskilled and following really bad advice. For future reference, can I give you a few pointers?

can you help me with my car?
victor jolley hey yeah the work wasn’t perfect , what if there was another coat of paint then followed by a another series of clear coats ? Just to help with the bright spots
Totally agree. The fact that he hasn't "liked" your comment says it all though eh.

+ryan verdugo LMAO
+ryan verdugo give the dude some props using spray cans! hahaha if he didn't buff it out id b a fuked up job for sure
+ryan verdugo oh i spoke too soon it turned out looking dog shit

He should've just used a chainsaw to sand it. It's much much faster.
Hahaha brilliant lolol
OMG 🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️
Foreals
C’mon , give the the man some credit for trying. Not everybody has the funds to buy all the supplies needed. Hopefully his next project turns out better.
What a disaster. If you have no idea don’t give bad advice
Test this on a neighbors car first....
LOL
And there you have it! A polished turd!
Fuck me I'm an expert sprayer and re-finisher if this is the standard I need to live up to.
Why not just take the hood off and sand the whole thing down?
You're supposed to be repairing lacquer not removing the base coat and then re-spraying.
Sorry but doing nothing would be preferable to this job...
I knew this was going to be bad the moment you pulled out 120 grit sandpaper. Unsure why I continued to watch it until the end. Poor car, good luck
lol same but it was like a vortex
Lol
I knew it must go bad, when I saw he uses French newspapers
You can use even 80 grit but only for a tiny bit to loosed the clear cost edge and then do to 200 grit then 320 that’s the best way
What kind of paint job do you want?
"just fuck my shit up fam"
+codvx
"say no more"
codvx lmao
For the love of god, don't work on your engine man.
Wow. Glad I watched this so I know what NOT to do! Yikes. Don't quit your day job dude.
Ikr!!!
The 120 grit sand paper was the first mistake and everything after was a fuck up kmsl
omg these comments lmfao.
A seamless paint match!! 😞🔫
If your going to use 120grit you may as well speed the process up by using a shotgun. The end result will be the same.

excellent reply pmsl
"The result is not perfect..." hahahahahahahahaaaa
🤣🤣🤣
Where is the fun
9:46 HOW CAN SOMEONE USE A KNIFE THAT WAY. OMG
You forgot to cover your windshield...... cough....cough... Love those fumes.... Nice try, but I think I'd rather just have my clear coat flaking.
I think I need to see my eye dr. I swear I see every original peel. It looks mottled. Like deep sea camouflage. Please forward this video to the US Navy! JK!

Looks horrible... Myself I would just spray the entire hood matte black...
+Richard D. Maybe, but it would still look better than his 'camo' hood...
+József Milán Pintér he would have been better of using the actual color of his car doing the whole hood and clear coating it
good effort, but all you had to do was wet sand the peeling clear coat with 800grit while trying to avoid the base paint. my thoughts exactly. he fucked his shit up good.

I work in a paint shop, but what do I know about painting lol
just get rid of the car anyway, is too shitty and the worst color EVER
I felt like I was in a trance watching this.

very informative, terrible execution, when he took of the newspaper and i saw the ford badge, it all became clear
WOW
looked better with the peeling clear coat!!
never do this to your vehicle.
That hood makes me feel like I'm hallucinating. Not good.

lmao right I can't stop loughing while I watched this...19 mins..of propaganda going on from this non ..handy fellow
is your fault for expecting any other fix than a legit respray, boy
Latin Lover seems like you might be blowing him....
if you get the correct paint its possible to respray an entire panel for a factory look. Spraying in blotches like that is a NO-GO. Looks like ass...
Stfu little girl. Real men don’t wear eye protection. Go back to taking selfies
Perfect match...Nailed it!!!!!
What a mess I bet you wish you hadn't done that! It looked better before you started lol

this is the guy i `want` to marry my ex wife !
Definitely good enough for my trusty 90's beater in my backyard. No need to spend what its worth on a MAACO paint job lol.
Hey, Ryan, give the guy a break. Not everyone in the world lives in America and has a rich Daddy to by him a Jeep - if you'd actually work for the life you enjoy, you would show more respect!

Backyard mechanic 101....... How to fuck up n sprayjob completely. Nice job at miss guessing the colour of your own car, man........ I would rather let the clearcoat flake thanks......... LMAO
Fair play to the guy for having a go but wow he done that SOOOOO wrong!!!🤦🏻♂️
And this folks is why I have a job. Good attempt.

Excellent job your car now looks like a green cheetah... it’s got the spots and everything 10/10 paint job
I can't say much but I will anyways. 120 grit sand paper? You should've used a goddamn handful of screwdrivers , they take paint off too!
Absolutely shocking I've work at landrover doing this type of work never skimp out on prep work foundation is key to an impressive finish. Please don't follow the advice in this video.
never cringed so much in my entire life!
Wow that guy is really bad at painting if done right this could look almost perfect but his technique is terrible.
Would have been better if he repainted the whole hood instead of just repainting the spots.
Maybe another few coats of colour would have gotten rid of those dark patches? It doesn't look terrible, but it doesn't look great...
how I would do it: Sand off all the varnish and paint off the hood until its nearly bare metal. make on single coat of primer, sand it a bit with 800+ grit sand paper (that way I see all the imperfections and bumps). use a tiny bit of filler to fill all the imperfections and bumps. sand the filler with 800+ grit paper again (to even out the surface further). then put on 2 more coats of primer (just to make sure its all covered and also better result) then put on at least 3 coats of spray paint, wait until it dries, and one pretty thick layer of clear coat. If you hadn't attacked it with 120 grit and used 1000 wet you would have got a much better result.
When he started painting I fucking lost it
Clear coart fix :
cheap, easy, effective
you can only pick 2
"The paint isn't perfect but the peeling dissappear" lmfao. Loved the polishing process. So impressive. Good job man you messed up that hood so bad it deserves a comment. But hey like magic "the peeling dissappear"
The title of the video sould be " How NOT to....... " it is so painful to watch !!
Part 2: Easily fix a bodged peeling clear coat fix..... Cancelled due to ill health (wear a mask)!
I came for the video and stayed for the comments...you guys didn't let me down
Not the best job in the world but still looks better the what it did, Considering he did it on a drive with cans.
yes we all know you should just repaint a pilling hood. I don't care if 100 done right. what some one show us how to repair the clear coat with out base coat.
i want my 19:17 seconds back... do you have a refund policy?
slap my balls... while jacking me off ?...
no kicking... just stomping.
I think he need to approach Expert or Professional Painter Dont try at home....
Now all that's left to do is remove the clear from the windshield & wait till next week for the rest of the clear coat to start peeling!
Should of used that money for booze instead of cheap paint!!
You did all the work of doing it right without actually doing it right. Good job. This should be titled how not to paint anything ever.
LMFAO wow dude that really looks like shit...hahaha...
1 you should of just left it alone it was better.off
2 you should of took the hood off before ...wen using a spray can......
3 you we're way to close with those cans buddy lmao
don't quit your day job
I'm speechless.
not bad at all for a self repair, done outdoors on a budget.
Coughing from the fumes... Haha.
not sure what people are on about , looks great for a spray bomb , not mirror finish but hey its not like you sold us the video as how to get shop quality , thanks man good upload
People that don't know what they are doing, should NOT make RUclips videos...
wow I wasted 19 minutes of my life...
The way he is breathing hard after just seconds of sanding.....
Its funny how everybody is on here trying to correct all of his mistakes... yet aren't making videos of their own.... thanks for the helpful video bro
Why do you need to make a video to prove that what was done here was wrong?
Omg I'm dieing over here the ending results is hilarious!!!!
that not repairing clear coat . your just repainting it. get the title right.
He just as well dipped a cat in a tin of paint and rubbed it over the bonnet!
thats not a thin coat thats 4 coats in 2 seconds...
Looks like a fix tutorial by Borat! Lmfao
I don't know if I can repair clear coat, but I certainly have become a jump cut expert!
Well it did look worse. So A for effort.
Thanks for the video I have a neon that looks terrible I think it might look just a little better
If I can do half as good as u . thanks
Don't do this.
Someone add this to a cringe compilation smh
18.01 the result is not perfect. But the peeling has gone 😂😂😂 10 out of 10 for effort tho 👍

The result whould have been worth it.
hahahahaha. this should be on a tv show for worst DIY videos lol.
Look, let's be honest here. This is not a tutorial you should follow unless you don't care about driving around in a botched paint job. But good on him for making an effort.
Props for at least trying haha
The Tie Die Colour Effect is definitely in for 2020 👌
Dreadful job, could not stop laughing, is this video a joke or what...lol preferred the pealing to this sub standard job...keep the jokes coming
The VR switch it looks like shit bro you spent all that work doing that for Wife I’m sorry but it looks terrible my 10-year-old son killed a better job
this is the worst paint repair video I've ever seen, 120 grit and razor blades? WTH dude?
Although the intent was good, the execution was horrible, should have sanded the whole hood, atleast to have a consistent paint coverage. Spray method was horrible, but got all the spots lol, more of a fluid motion would have worked. Horrible job but good video lol, and i do mean that lol
thats an awful job, patchy, uneven and not event the correct shade, this is a HOW NOT TO PAINT YOUR CAR
