    After watching this movie I couldn't believe we hadn't learned about Alan Turning in history class.

    • @nina4234

      Actually the film isn't the historical version of cracking Enigma , because Polish scientists had a more important role in cracking enigma than Turing . And in the film they are simply " forgotten "

    • @nina4234
      @nina4234 8 лет назад +15

      They are mentioned once , they say they smuggled Enigma out of Poland. In reality Polish mathematicians (notably Marian Rejewski, Jerzy Rozycki and Henryk Zygalski) succeeded in breaking early Enigma codes in 1932 and passed their findings to British counterparts shortly before the war began. Poles also taught Turing how to build machines that simulated the Enigma machine.

      You what, mate? What Turing did for the field of Computer Science is amazing, regardless of whether or not the film is otherwise correct. See Turing machines and Artificial intelligence etc.

    Listening to this makes me think of Alan Turing and I feel so angry and ashamed that such a great man was prosecuted and basically forced to suicide because people couldn't accept his sexuality. It's just so sad and horrible how all of his efforts in breaking the Nazi code was completely overshadowed by him being a homosexual and how it's "against nature and God" to the point that he's not even mentioned in any history class. This just makes me so angry I can't stand it.

      @Akira Yang you know what I can't stand, people who don't do their research. It is not proven that Alan committed suicide it is also possible and likely that he died by accident because exposure to a deadly chemical. He also died a few months after he went off his medication meaning the drugs were no longer in affect. As for not being made famous at the time, that was because they were afraid a war would break out again, like what happened between world war 1 and 2, if he was made famous at the time the axis would not use enigma meaning al the work building the decoding machine would have to start again. And if he did commit suicide maybe part of the reason was that he went through one of the worst wars in history.
      Last little side note he appeared to be quite happy the weeks before he died

    • @winnie965
      @winnie965 5 лет назад +1

      @@gerickdekruijf8592 I also cannot stand how people do their research!
      Alan Turing's suicide was over an apple with cyanide on it, his favorite tale was Snow White. Why go through such lengths if it was a murder? The first computer had JUST been made, a murderer would just do it normally and make it look like a suicide.
      In response to your side note, the fact that he was appearing to be happy weeks before he died proves absolutely nothing, depressed people usually appear enthusiastic in public, apologies but that part is irrelevant-- and no offense, but a little ignorant.

    Wonderful music - amazing film. I hated history in high school but as I have grown older, it has become a passion of mine. I cannot imagine how anyone can not watch this film and NOT find it a treasure. IT really is remarkable the technologies that helped the allied forces to win this terrible war. This film highlights one of the stories that helped in the turning point of the war. I cannot explain how satisfied I was at the end of the this film - a great story but the fact it was based on actual events makes it all the more remarkable.

      What is omitted is that high level communications used a separate cipher that was much more complex(exponentially). This was cracked by another man whose name I can not recall and was much more significant. To solve it a much more complex machine was invented. The existence of it was only recently declassified due to the sheer power of the machine. Unlike the Universal Turing Machine, it printed out plaintext when cipher text was input. This does not discount the facts that this was a great movie. While Turing's work was more influential than the work of this other individual, it was not as extensive. I do believe the man worked with him at Bletchley

    This was a great movie, yet, while I won't call it forgettable because it is far from that, it doesn't stick in my head quite to the extent of its brilliant score. It's a well made film no doubt, but I think it just felt like another Oscar grab to me, which is the reason I went to see it in the first place. Maybe I'll remember it more fondly upon second viewing, because I can't seem to place it as of now.

    The film is not even remotely connected with History. Alan Turing, alongside all the other characters and situations, is completely misrepresented. Descendants are deeply offended, and the real people behind the characters must all be revolving in their tombs. Great ST.

    • @staygeboss
      @staygeboss 6 лет назад +3

      Irene, I suggest you start reading some history. While the movie is somewhat fictionalized for dramatic effect, the facts regarding Turing, enigma, the machine (Christopher), and Britain's criminal act of charging him with indecency are all true. He was one of the most brilliant minds of the early 20th century and his suicide was preempted by the British lawmakers and their pixie minded intolerance.
