    In this project, I show you how to build a thermoelectric cooling unit. This is a miniature refrigerator that you can attach to your wrist. It is able to quickly cool your whole body. You can use it to cool off after working out in the heat or you can just stay at a comfortable temperature without having to air condition the entire building.

    When I was young I tried to design a portable 12 volt peltier water cooler for a vest that could be worn under motorcycle gear using pwm and mosfets through an arduino to control the water pump and peltiers. The things take a lot of power unfortunately which would explain why there's nothing out there on the market like that. I never got mine to work good enough to be worthy of further development. Honestly, distance is distance and units are units. People with Imperial scales will work to Imperial measure while people with Metric scales will work to Metric and nothing of that will change the actual dimensions worked to.
      Simple fact is that "Americans" often work in Metric as well as Imperial and have for decades. There is no hidden measure that anyone is "really" working to, scales are arbitrary. Ask yourself why 1 meter is not what it was originally intended to be, a certain fraction of the size of the Earth. Yes, because the people who invented metric measure got the size of the Earth wrong by over 10%! The length of a Meter is based on an ERROR and that, my man, is arbitrary!

    I wonder, does your hand get cold? I just googled how the veins run in the wrists and it seems the hot blood into hand goes via the middle of the wrist. So, If you put a piece of that insulating material there, in theory, you would get hotter hand, which would exchange heat to the surrounding air more efficently and the bloodflow to the heart would be cooler, thus dropping your body temperature more. It propably wouldn't be more powerful, but it would propably be more efficient. Having portable power source. How about making a solar powered hat? With a propeller of course.

    Maybe just sew it to a pair of nylon gloves that you can pull other gloves (like, for work) over so you essentially have an insert with the cooling unit on the back of the wrist.
    It would help cool more blood returning to your body and avoid frostburn from the unit only cooling (and numbing) one spot.

    This is one of the silliest projects that I have seen make do in quite a while. If you put something on your wrist to cool down your blood, nothing will happen outside of your forearm. The rest of your body will heat the blood back up and almost no effect will be felt. I could also imagine your wrist becoming very numb and possibly losing some sensation in the accompanying hand because the veins are being restricted because of the cold.

    It's nice to know people still make comments like "it wont work" without actually having any engineering knowledge. Did you know peltier coolers are sometimes used to boost the cooling on CPU's? Did you know that these little coolers can, if driven properly, remove over 100 instantaneous watts of heat energy per square inch? Sure it takes some juice to do it, but it can be done. As for the looks, people are so closed minded and seem like they look at the world with blinders on (Blinders, you know those things they put on horses in the city to keep their view narrow? I know a lot of people like that). This is just a prototype concept. I can already envision this thing using a narrow string of peltiers with tiny low profile fans pulling heat through custom designed heatsinks inside of a small housing including a lithium polymer removable battery that could be worn around your neck on a hot day and maybe provide 1-2 hours of relief per battery or charge. Open your mind. There is no box.

      I am attempting to use mine to keep me cool in Arizona summer though and 20F below ambient wont cut it in the summer as it could pretty easily still be in the 100s at that rate

    What would worry me more about this isn't the style, after all one could dress it a little bit better, make a "stylish" housing for it (depending on one's sense of style, be it sci fi, steam punkish or whatever...
    It's the power consumption!
    At no point do they talk about it, what's the wattage of the Pelletier plate?
    I highly doubt such a circuit could function for any decent length of time, excepted pwm'd to within an inch of it's life as far as wattage, and heat dissipation goes,
    If to get any sort of autonomy you've got to reduce the thing to a barely efficient mess, that's no use,
    Whereas, although heavier; a bacpack containing a large thermos of fresh tap water, with a water circuit comprising a small pump, like an aquarium pump, some vynil tubing, and a modified watercooling block!
    Although still as dorky, that oughta work for a decent amount of time, though you'd have to trade wheight to get better autonomy (usually cold tap water exits the faucet at around 15°c) (with a low pressure cuff arround the heat exchange pad, you could get away with a colder fluid without causing capillary contraction and decreased bloodflow to the skin surface)
    (But after all, that type of solution allready exists with water circulating vests trading energy transfer efficiency (aka an Al or Cu block on the skin) for bigger surface of exchange...
    Might still be more efficient though!!!

    Cool idea, funny since this was first brought up by some students at MIT if I am not mistaken. Anyways, I would definitely make this with some old peltier coolers but who wants to carry around a big 12v battery? Cool idea anyways

    you should try to attach a small 9v battery that box is way too big to carry around

    Would like some way to find out if it works. Ie does it really cool your blood, ie your body?
    Don't know, but if someone could kind of do a simulation with 3 ltr of fluid going through 50 meters of 98.6 F temp tubing and about 40 mm this tube is kept at 40 F.
    Would it cause any difference? Now that I have stated the above, it does not sound possible to me. What is 40 mm cooled tubing, in comparison to 30 or 40 meters of heated or regulated Y heated tubing. Nope don't think it would work. But would love to be wrong.

    I'm no electronics expert, but couldn't you have just used a potentiometer for adjusting fan intensity?

    • @canibal803
      @canibal803 10 лет назад +1

      I think you would need more than just the potentiometer because it just measures potential voltages, not temperatures. If you could pair one with a thermocouple I think that might work. But hey, I'm no expert either.

    • @BadLarryFilms
      @BadLarryFilms 10 лет назад

      canibal803 Well, the potentiometer would just add variable electric resistance to the fan's power, limiting the fan speed, correct?

    • @sj193
      @sj193 10 лет назад +6

      BadLarryFilms, home of TheShadbusher That is correct, however using passive resistance is not the optimal controller in this instance. Using a potentiometer will reduce the output to the fan and thermoelectric plate, but it takes that extra energy and converts it into heat; the very thing we're trying to remove from the system. It also wastes energy that could have been used to the power the device by the same heat conversion (especially important when running from a battery!). By using the 555 timer and a relay no energy is wasted by simply shutting the unit on and off, so no extra heat is generated and no energy is wasted.

    • @brice9613
      @brice9613 10 лет назад

      BadLarryFilms, home of TheShadbusher yes but potentiometer is not powerful enuth for the amout of curent going through so what wood hapen is it wood start to get hot,smoke and burn
