How we taught our baby sign language + the 15+ signs we use DAILY! 🍼

- Wondering how to teach your baby sign language? Here is how we taught our son, Milo, to communicate with us! He was just about 13 months old at the time of this recording, and throughout the past few months, I've found that teaching a baby sign language is a really great way to save your child (and yourself!) some frustration, boost their confidence, and increase your parent-child bond.
This video explores why you should teach your baby sign language, and also shares about 15 regular signs that we use every day. If you’ve been thinking about teaching your baby sign language, I will share a ton of reasons why you should go for it.

So, why should you teach your baby sign language? The overall point is to help your baby communicate their needs to you. Babies can get frustrated when they want something and do not have the words to express it (there are a lot of "UHHH" and "EHHH"s thrown around), so signs can help you better understand one another.
Up front, I want to make two things clear regarding how I taught my baby sign language:
(1) We started teaching Milo sign language when he was an infant, but if you have not yet implemented sign language with your children, it's something that you can start ANY TIME. Children are very adaptable!
(2) You do not need to master ASL (American Sign Language) to make this work for your family. I don't speak ASL, but I was able to quickly learn the signs that we use with Milo from a few different baby books. You can also Google basic baby sign language signs to get started, but honestly, at the end of the day, as long as you and your child are on the same page with the signs you're giving, it doesn't really matter if you're doing the signs properly. The point is to make sure you can communicate effectively with your baby.
This video is full of baby sign language basics and baby sign language words. Throughout the video, I go over how we introduced baby sign language to Milo, the signs we are currently using every day, the signs we don't use, and how it’s been working for our family. I share a lot of specific scenarios where baby sign language has been helpful, as well as the overall benefits of sign language communication for babies.
If you’re looking for baby hunger signs and example clips of a baby gesturing “milk” in sign language, this video has plenty. SO CUTE.
To sum up my advice after reviewing how I taught my baby sign language, I would say:
1. Start by teaching a small number of signs.
2. Use the signing action whenever you say the word you're teaching your baby.
3. When your child is ready, they will start making gestures that look like what you've shown them and use them when they’re trying to communicate with you.
3. Once you think your baby has mastered a sign, start adding in new ones.
4. Keep practicing the signs every day.
There are so many benefits of sign language, and it’s incredibly rewarding to be able to understand what your child is trying to communicate to you. It opens up a whole world of connection that you can have with your babies because sign language allows you to really understand their needs, and it makes the household run smoother because you can communicate with them so much more easily.

My son just turned 20, we used these Signing Times videos back then. He picked it up so fast and to this day will sign to me as a “remember when?!” Back in the day older parents swore to us that we would delay his speech by signing; complete bs! Loved being able to communicate with him, it alleviated so much frustration! Glad to see it still being used!
We use Baby Signing Time too! When we first started, my mom kept telling us how she needs to learn to "actually speak". We did NOT allow that for long.

This video came at the perfect time! My nephew is learning ASL in daycare, but I don’t always understand what’s he’s trying to communicate because I don’t speak it. Now I can practice!

I wish I had learned as a kid. My nieces and nephews and younger cousins were taught. It definitely wasnt as emphasiezed or had the same awareness 30 years ago when I was a baby
My daughter was born with a developmental disability with speech delay. I remember one day I was in the kitchen and had called out to her in the living room did she want a drink. Well, I asked like 3 times with no answer so I went into the living room to ask again and she was doing a hand sign which I found out meant yes. I spoke to her teacher who told me there was another student in her class who used ASL and the kids were learning some of it from watching that student using it. I thought it was a wonderful thing and we learned a few common signs while she was in elementary school. She is now 38 and able to communicate without a problem, but she still remembers a few signs. What your doing is fantastic and definitely helps diminish frustration for everyone.

That’s so awesome the signs are working with Milo! I need to get better about doing signs with my baby. She’s 11.5 months old, and still isn’t copying any of the signs, though I’ve not been as diligent as you. I have done milk and all done for a while, and I’ve started using more and water in the last few months. Right now she tells us she’s all done by throwing food, and that is such a struggle! At least she’s getting really good about waving and pointing/gesturing.

Can you imagine? There was a video about the baby that showed to its mom that it was sleeping on its hands. It was an answer to her question. I commented that babies understand a way more than some of us might think. And I got so many answers attacking me and demanding proof. Lol! There we go, I'm here to take a link and prove it. My 16m old is barely talking. He says mom and dad, sometimes.. that’s the only really understandable things he says. He sometimes says please, but it’s just peee. I started using sign with him and he can do more, all done, please, food, and milk. I’ve started water and thank you. I’m glad he is able to use those to help communicate besides pointing and screaming haha. I know it’s not his hearing because he obviously understands what I say and obey commands, but language wise verbally he just isn’t talking. He babbles a lot, so I know he’s getting there, but it’s hard not to worry because both my girls started taking really early and my oldest had a vocabulary of over 100 words by the time she was 1.

Sing language can also work in order to bridge the gap between two languages. Example the word tree in English sounds different than árbol on Spanish but by signing the word the child now has the visual representation of what are the same words but in a different language.

Different sign languages have different signs for things. Some similar, some same, some very different.

How do you tell the difference between the sign for water and food when he does it? His gestures look so similar
Awsome !!! I am currently doing it with my third boy, doing it the French version! We use the same words and I added "diaper change", and "it hurts". The second one was really interesting to use before he got his vaccinations. Milo is adorable !!!

My son is speech delayed and doesnt show a clear understanding of his needs. He is 19 months is it too late to teach him sign language to communicate?
Any suggestions on how to work with a 21 month old who only says "a"? Speech therapy starts next month, but I was told that I might want to work with her on sign language. As of now, I can't get her attention long enough with what I've tried.

Hi there! I’m not Deaf or Hard of Hearing but I would highly suggest looking into some resources that are created by Deaf creators. Some of your signs are not entirely correct - not a bad thing; youre learning too! :) I’ve worked as an interpreter for a while and I think you might find more helpful signs and resources beyond just baby sign. ❤
I've seen some deaf creators express that they feel baby sign is a form of cultural appropriation, and that if possible signs that parents use with children should resemble the correct ASL (or whatever the national sign language is in their country) sign.
Obviously I'm not judging parents who choose to use baby sign (compared to proper sign) with their children. I myself just never considered this point of view, and I think it could perhaps be helpful for parents or others who are interested in the topic.
My sister is deaf. I love that sign language is being taught to children.
I definitely second this (I am hearing btw)! I am a college student studying CSD and ASL. I love that you are teaching your baby sign language and that it's been effective so far. I would also highly suggest to learn the correct way to sign these things from Deaf resources/content, so if needed in the future, your baby can communicate with Deaf children or those who use ASL effectively if need be!
@@risotto4life577 people will always find a reason to complain. Children can't talk. Using sign language to communicate with someone who can't talk is not cultural appropriation.
@@DefinitelyNotBlackOpalDirect Theres no need to be quite so condescending, as I was only shared the perspective of a deaf person. I personally like hearing about different points of view, and even if I don't agree with them myself I try and be understanding and share them with others. Discussions are great.
To expand on that though she specifically said it was only cultural appropriation to teach a baby sign language and then abandon it when they begin speaking. She said it was almost offensive that parents only viewed it as a cute little way to talk to their baby, and then discarded it once the baby could speak as "there was no longer any need". Essentially, parents were taking an aspect of deaf culture without actually considering the population group it belongs to. Parents weren't teaching their baby's sign language so that they could communicate with deaf people (highly needed!) instead they only used it as a substitute for speech.
She did not mean that a non-deaf person speaking sign language was cultural appropriation, in fact she WANTS parents to teach their children sign language. She just doesnt want them to throw it away.

For general communication and maybe in the future so he can actually learn some of it if he wants to.
(If i remember that by the time i have a baby.... in like many years.... i might just do that)
Another question related to that: has it changed how (or how much) he speaks? So do you feel like he is doing that normally or is he using it less (or learning it slower) because of that?

You should give him milk when he wants as he is communicating and you need to acknowledge his choice. They grow up way to fast so also enjoy him

My toddler communicated with signs but I think this delayed his speech as he was able to communicate without words.
So far Milo has started saying a bunch of these words verbally! I just found this useful before he could say them! He now says “more” and “all done” etc. seems very verbal!!
@@luciebfink All children are certainly different! My boy is clearly a little lazy with his speech 😅 but we did see the speech therapist and they did say that the signs he used to communicate may have delayed his speech. However, they all get there in the end 👍
Since your baby has learned your sign for milk, you need to stick with it. However it is wrong. You are actually waving. The correct sign is like you are milking a cow’s teat, so your hand is horizontal.
