- In this video, I share my experience about driving a "lesser car," my daughter's 2015 Mk7 Launch Edition Golf. This is not a review. Instead, I share how a "basic Golf" compels me to appreciate my modestly-equipped GTI.

Pepperidge farm remembers LOL
I loved this video, so honest 😂. The dry humor is just my cup of tea too !
That is one CLEAN 2 door mk7!
Ps The last bit about debt is so spot on, especially in this wild economy. My husband and I are debt free right now but we need to get our own home within the next 2 years (we will have 3 kids after this baby comes in a few weeks! All in Diono car seats, which fit 3 across in the Golf). We aren’t sure what to do yet but we are in no hurry to be in debt. We May buy a truck / camper and a plot of land to build a cabin on. My parents learned the hard way about money and debt...a stern warning to me!!
I hope my daughter learns from what we missed in her youth and what I'm saying now, especially now that I'm hopefully setting a better example. Thanks for visiting.
Hilarious video, really showed your range as a content creator. Also I appreciate your whole family's service to our country
I appreciate that! Some do not quite get my dry humor. Thanks for visiting!
Hahah the short ad at the end.👍
I went from a '05 no a/c honda civic coupe to my '16gti s, and I thought,
"😲I've got it all." Good vid.
Thanks! I think the GTI is pretty sweet and loaded good enough for me. Others probably balk at is as "under-equipped." It's all relative! Thanks for visiting.
loved the video from start to finish and had me laughing the whole way through! amazing video with some true advice to keep those debt mistakes from piling up.
Glad you enjoyed it! I'm surprised I haven't been lectured about the "hands-free" segment yet. HAHA!
2 door golfs look pretty good with light mods
She plans to lower it a bit when she returns from overseas. It'll look good, but the ride will be different for sure! Thanks for visiting.
once its VW i love it. I gived my VR6 Mk4 to my second son when he turn 18 . he had it for 2 years until he leave for school in the netherlands , where he bought himself one which was lesser like this one and got rid of it in a hurry hahahaha. I always drove VW, i kept upgrading until i reach my Mk7 where i think this would be hand down to my last son. I love this video and all your videos . You inspire me to work on mines more .
Thanks for sharing your experience! I think I will always drive VWs. Take Care!
Funny stuff. After a lifetime of being a car nut, I find myself in my wife's hand me down VW Golf Mk7 Wolfsburg. At least it's a manual. I had visions of an E30 or 944, but I think with a few mods, I can make this thing fun. Subscribed to follow you along. Nice videos.
Thanks for the comment! My daughter plans to install my old IS20 after a clutch upgrade. APR advertises 290-ish horsepower. That should wake-up the car fairly well. :-)
Thanks for your wisdom, Scott
My pleasure! Thanks for visiting.
I’ve got the same snail sticker on the back glass of my GTI! 😂😂👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Nice! My daughter grew up with a stuffed Gary toy. :-)
Haha! That mk7 golf still looks like a great car. Screw all the new automated car tech!
It's all something else to break! ;-)
Great video, Scott. Your daughter's stock Golf may be a "lesser car" than your GTI but she can claim the 2 door version is better looking. She can probably make much the same claim comparing her looks to her dad's. 😁
Very true! I'm hoping she takes more from her mother's looks than mine. HAHA! Thanks for visiting.
I actually drive a 2015 Golf TDI SE. I've found that it actually does fine on power, I have a backup camera, and while it didn't come with the MIB2 infotainment, I soon upgraded it. I paid $13K for mine in 2019 with 43K miles on it, and it's been a great car. I have 84K on it now. That base Golf doesn't seem like it would be too bad as a daily driver. 170hp is too little? My, how we've gotten spoiled with the 2.0T, huh? Didn't you used to drive a 90hp mk3 Jetta TDI?? That little Golf would run rings around it! Love your videos!
Yes, the GTI has spoiled me for sure! My Mk3 was around 150 hp and 350 lb-ft. At just 2800 lbs, it was quite fun, but I'm not fooling myself into believing that any TDI I've ever been in can hold a candle to the GTI without billowing smoke everywhere. ;-)
Freedom from debt is always greater than the alternative. Great words man 👍
No doubt! Thanks for visiting!
The GTi is the best price hot hatch for middle age man that doesn’t want to spend the money and still practical for day to day driving. Love your video Scott. You sound like a spoiled old man like myself. Can’t agree more of us getting more and more stupid to drive with all the assistance.
HAHA! Thanks for the comment!
And that's the problem today. People want to rely on technology for everything. Some is good but not all. I have an mk5 and love the simplicity of it. We can get too distracted with anything nowadays and that's dangerous because it only takes a second for something bad to happen.
Yep. I used to sit in a parking lot for my lunch breaks. Try it if you want to witness some truly horrific driving decisions and poor operating skills. ;-)
Love your videos, how much did it cost to fix your side bolstering?
I think it was about $250. That's enough to compel one to adjust the way they enter the car! ;-) Thanks for your comment!
I got the same car! Pushing around 250 right now
I want to feature her car in a future video. First, I need to get her home and away from her car for long enough to record some footage. Thanks for visiting!
hey boss, love the channel, I'm subscribed!
what ball socket did you end up buying, didn't note it on your site. Are you aware if mk7.5 vs mk 7 can use the same wiring kits?
Thanks for the subscription! Ball socket where? What wiring kit? I don't recall discussing anything like that in this video. I have a LOT of wiring projects and videos for my GTI.
was just looking for guidance, as I didnt see a specific video on the channel that talked about how you wired it to an outlet in the back, as opposed to the battery. just bought a harness, looking to hook it up
@@felipediaz6816 - I still don't understand what you're asking. What "ball socket" and what is "it" in "how you wired it to an outlet in the back?" Is this a trailer lighting question? I'm not sure if I should have you be more broad or more specific. I'm not following your line of questions. Can you please explain?
Scott, has your daughter or yourself considered upgrading the headlights to LED? I upgraded my 17 GTI to LED (it unfortunately did not have the lighting package) and it made a world of difference especially when it rains at night!
She's been deployed for a bit, but that hasn't stopped her from spending a few bucks on upgrades. She has some sort of lighting upgrade waiting for her return. They're projectors with LED markers by Spyder. She did a little research and bought was good for her balance between performance and economy. :-)
i have a gti base soooo i push a key to open the car and turn the ignition lol
HAHA! I almost bought an S, but opted for the next trim up to get the VAQ differential. I shared an article at stealthgti.com/2016/11/12/why-a-gti-sport/, if you're interested. Thanks for visiting.
APR stage 1 tune... Keep it on the 87-octane file... save your money. LGB/FJB!! .... needs nothing else. This was my 1st VW car after a long line of Japanese makers, and it's been VW's ever since...
Too late! Her engine eventually needed replacing, possibly due to some abuse by the previous owner. We did some upgrades to the replacement. See more at ruclips.net/video/WOE8lWxRukQ/видео.html. Thanks for visiting!
You don't know what you are missing until it's gone... Might sound like an open door but it's true.. Well, the 170 horses isn't too bad actually, over here in Europe, back in the day (2013) the Mk7 started with a base 1.2TSI petrol engine, pushing out 85 horsepowers.. this makes your daughter's Launch Edition a muscle car.. :-)
HAHA! Yes, power is relative. Unfortunately, most better-than-average sedans over here have 200+. My wife's Jetta has the 1.4T with just 150 hp. No winning any sprints in that car. ;-)
Pepperidge farm remembers 😂
HAHA! Thanks for the note! That seems like a played-out joke, but it was too easy to walk thru that door, once opened. ;-)
i have a 2 door gti and ppl always try and race me. I think its a 2 door golf thing
Perhaps that's it. But I still think the assumption that it's a "kid's car" is at play. Once they see some old dude driving, they drive away and leave me alone. HAHA!
You are certainly right that having power is fun. However as it's been said before, "with great power comes great responsibility." Too many times, I've received poor loser reactions from drivers I've beat. You don't have to be first to the red light.
Thanks for sharing. Most of the time, I drive in the right lane and just five over the posted speed limit. I don't contest over "who's in front." But, when I've crept-up on someone for a mile and then they speed up when I'm there... yeah, I'm punching around them. Most will slow back down once they can admit to having been passed. HAHA!
swap your old is20 into the golf before giving it back :)
we actually already have a plan for that upon my return....
^i support this.
Plus a stage 1 tune
Yep, she gets first dibs on my old IS20. First, she needs to budget for a clutch and save for the labor and software. I've done a lot to help over the years, but this path to speed and trouble will have to come out of her pocket. ;-)
@@StealthGTI i support this too.^
get her a stage one tune and that is it
She has Stage 1 now and would love to do a turbo swap. However, she's modding on HER budget, not her dad's. ;-) So, it will be a while before she sees more power than Stage 1. :-) Thanks for writing!
damn, this video made me feel poor af with my conventional car
It's all a matter of perspective. Again, driving something stripped down a bit helps me to appreciate the GTI that I have instead of lusting for a nicer, more expensive replacement. Thanks for visiting.
@@StealthGTI like a Golf R?
@@stathi13 - Yup, like a Golf R or an Arteon. I'm currently watching the ID.Buzz. Odds are good that it will be beyond what I want to pay. But I also think it will check some of the boxes I'd like to have in my next vehicle.
you are spoiled :-) My Mk IV GTI had 180hp that I never messed with and drove quite conservatively but never had a passing issue in the 210K I put on it.
Twenty years ago, when the Mk4 was current, 180hp was pretty good. These days, just about any better than average sedan has more than that. Thanks for visiting.
