BEST 5 WAYS to OPEN and 2 WAYS to PREVENT STUCK Water Filter Housing!

- Can’t get your water filter housing open to change the filter? No matter how hard you try and how hard you push it will not open? In this video you’ll learn 5 techniques to get that housing open so you can change your water filter and 2 things you can do to make sure it doesn’t happen again, all starting right now!
It seems so easy, just unscrew the filter housing, remove and replace the filter and you’re good to go, right? Well sometimes you just can’t get it unscrewed so here are 5 great tips to help you out!
1) Turn your water supply off. You probably have a shutoff on the supply line located before the filter. If not, go to the hydro panel and turn the pump off.
2) Relieve the water pressure on the lines before you attempt to unscrew the housing that holds the water filter. Turn a faucet on inside the house to relieve the pressure and let the water run until it slows to a trickle. Then shut off the water after the filter housing to keep the water from the house from draining back.
3) Place a bucket under the filter housing. If the housing has a relief button push that to make sure all the pressure is gone. Make sure that the filter housing is securely fastened. Brace the plumbing while unscrewing the housing and take it off. Remember you will be turning the housing to the left, “lefty loosey, righty tighty”.
4) If it does not come loose, you will need to try the following:
1) Using a blow dryer to heat up and expand the outside of the housing until it becomes very warm, knock it with a hammer and remove with the filter housing wrench.
2) Use two filter housing wrenches together, one for each hand and twist the housing with both wrenches. waterestore.ca...
3) You can sandwich two filter housing wrenches together and add pipe to give you more leverage.
4) Use a metal filter wrench like this one, which is stronger and longer than the typical plastic one. You can buy these on Amazon in a number of sizes. If that doesn’t work, you can always add on a piece of pipe to that wrench.
5) Another alternative is a Lisle Strap wrench like this amzn.to/342s4bl You just wrap it around your housing and with a ½” socket wrench add some torque to release the filter housing. You can even add a piece of pipe to the socket wrench for more torque.
Then just clean out the housing and replace the filter.
To lessen the possibility of this happening again in the future I definitely suggest you do two things!
1) Always make sure that you check the bottom of the filter housing for o rings left behind from the old filter before putting in the new filter
2) Use some plumber’s clear silicone grease and or replace the o ring so you don’t need to tighten it so much to begin with to keep it from leaking. waterestore.ca...

This happens to everyone at one time or another! Check out the video so you'll know what to do when it happens to you.
I turned off the valve before the housing, there isn't one after, and pressed the release (got sprayed in the face 😂🙄) anyways. I'm scared to take it off because a ton of water is coming out. I screwed it back on but it won't stop dripping (water is still off) anybody please help!!😬
@@tiffanybusse199 don't worry. The water is flowing back from your house because you don't have a shut off after the filter. As long as you have shut off the water going to the filter run water at a faucet nearby until it slows right down to nothing and then remove the filter and catch any water remaining in a bucket.
I own a retail water store and my maintenance guy locked the housing very tight to prevent leakage with chain wrench after filter change 🤦🤦🤦 I tried strap wrench with breaker bar, water pump plier, 2 filter housing wrenches with 2 pvc pipes attached by the handles, etc etc. Nothing really worked 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I got new housing after all.
Try wd 40 1st
How do you open a smooth sided housing?
Seriously, this guy should be nominated for an Oscar. He clearly understands peoples' struggles with the filters and boils down the issue with simple, well articulated solutions. Thanks Gary
MAN, THATS A FACT, HE EXPLAINED IT SO WELL. I WAS STUCK FOR 3 DAYS NOW; I JUST BOUGHT A HOUSE THAT USES WELL WATER AND I DONT LIKE IT MUCH BECAUSE THE WATER HAS A STINK TO IT. AND I WENT TO CHANGE THE FILTER WITH THE WRENCH THAT IS MADE OF HARD PLASTIC AND I SNAPPED IT BECAUSE I DIDNT KNOW YOU DONT TIGHTEN THE FILTER DOWN WITH THE SAME TOOL, SO I GOT IT STUCK VERY HARD, USED THIS MANS TRICKS AND I WAS HAPPY AND THANKFUL. NOW I AM WONDERING HOW TO USE THE REGEN TANK. TO PROPERLY FILTER IT, THE LAST FILTER WAS SO BLACK AND STUNK SO BADLY.
Thank so much for the information. Once I relieved the water pressure by turning off my well at the circuit breaker box and draining the water lines, the filter housing came right off!!! Yeah!
Glad it helped Please share video with friends and family!
This guys amazing. I was confused why my ig filter light still beeping. He makes amazing videos
Thank you very much! Please share video with friends and family.
You just helped me realize that I'd forgotten to bleed the faucet after shutting off the main. That was a fight iwas NOT going to win! Thanks!
You’re correct!
Everything about this video is perfect. Great job. I subscribed just because this one video is so helpful.

Great video ...now off to try them.
Did it work?
Put Food Grade Silicone Grease On The O Ring And Tighten By Hand Only Without A Wrench And You Will Never Have A Problem At Least I Never Had A Problem Ever.
As long as it does not leak, you are correct. The problem is most housings these days need a little more than hand tight, especially the large ones.
I feel a homicidal rage because of a water filter housing.
Suppress that rage! Follow the advice in the video!
Dude! I feel your rage!
@@JohnDeLaughs Jesus me too, I just tried removing mine in a place I bought and gave up after an hour. Dammit I will have to try again tomorrow, I can’t believe how tight that MF is
I guess I'm 1 of 2100 people that had trouble removing the filter. Thanks for the tips.
Glad it helped. Yes I'm sure there will be lots more families helped by this video. Please share with friends and family.
I’m one too, his advice helped so much!
Just get El cornholio to hold the second wrench butthead
😁😆🤣
First time with a water filter change. It was so stuck. Thank God I found your video. We were going to have to get the plumber in.
I heated with the blow dryer as you described band it took no strength at all to remove it. Thank you, thank you, thank you.
Also, my husband is in awe at what a smart girl he married 50 years ago. It pays to do the research.
You're welcome! Please share video with friends and family!
Always remove, clean, and inspect the o-ring. They will eventually need to be replaced if there are any nicks or tears or worn spots, but assuming there is no physical damage they should last for at least two to three years. Then apply plumbers (food grade) clear silicone grease to both the o-ring and the threads on the housing. A light coat is all you need.
Thank you for your contribution
Thanks Gary. Once you finally do get it off, the MOST important way to prevent it from happening again is to reattach it with your HANDS ONLY. Don't use the wrench to tighten or you'll be right back here watching videos next time you change your filters!
Yes, that is true, unless of course it leaks, where you would need to tighten it slightly with the wrench.
@@GarytheWaterGuy Mine leaks every time if I don't tighten with the wrench. Even with a new O-ring installed.
I have to cut mine off the wall and install a new one. Tank is frozen in place and unit is about ready to come off wall from me trying to get it free. No tricks worked to get it to even move. I suspect the silt has gotten into it and complete bound up.
Yes, you have worst case scenario
Gary the Water Guy-- You are a ROCK STAR! I appreciate your incremental approach to open a stuck housing. I successfully removed the housing with the Lisle Strap Filter Wrench with a pipe extension. Following each of your recommended techniques allowed me to finish the job without damaging the housing. Thank you for taking the time to make this valuable video!
Glad to help. Please share video with your friends and family
Excellent thank you. I had just broken my filter housing wrench before I searched youtube and found your video. Bought two new ones added the pipe and worked like magic. I could have saved myself some sweating if I watched this first. Thanks for taking the time to make this.

Hi Gary! My wife and I just moved up to Oro a few months ago and we basically knew nothing about water filtration systems. We found your channel and we quickly learned everything we needed to know to get us up and running with clean water! We have watched 4 videos and learned how to unstick a filter housing (this video) as well as changing the filter and yearly maintenance on our UV light filter! All awesome videos! Thanks very much for sharing your knowledge!
Glad to hear! Please share video with friends and family!
Thank you so much for the great tips. We eventually were able to get the housing off by heating the cap with a blow drier. We will be looking into that metal wrench for the next time. Thanks again for a great video!!
Glad it helped! Please share with friends and family.
Thank you for these ideas. I had just one wrench and based on your suggestions, I used a large rubber mallet and tapped it lose. Worked like a dream!
Great tip! Please share video with friends and family!
Thank you so much! Your video was so helpful. I am an older woman (but even when I was younger.... I struggled and feared changing the filter. ) Your video's are so helpful....you are a GEM! Not only great suggestions for getting the housing unstuck but your other videos really helped so MUCH! Thank you ..Thank you ...Thank you!!!

Gary - I've had to use a strap wrench before but I could not get this last replacement to turn so I watched your video again - I used the extended leverage trick with length of
pipe. Worked like a charm. Used more silicone on the gasket and was sure not to over tighten this time. You rock, dude! Thanks!
Then you may need to adjust or turn off some of the water filtration to compensate for the difference
Thanks for the blow dryer tip! I had a hell of a time changing the filter and twisting off the cap because of the pressure. Worked like a charm.
Glad it helped! Please share video with friends and family!
@@GarytheWaterGuy Yes, thanks for the blow dryer tip! I was about to call someone or buy a new filter system--it came right off!
Same. Gary, THANK YOU so much. I have a GE GXWH30C, and have been changing the filter for >10 years, but it was getting worse and worse, even after I used the silicone tactic. Earlier this year, it finally refused to turn. I spent several weekends over the past 6 months, wrestling and staring at the damn thing, and it would NOT budge. BUT THEN I tried your hair dryer tip. Alle-frickin-leuia!! Can I send you some $ to say thankyou!?
The same people install oil filters. Techs at dealers have strap wrenches, chain wrenches even metal cup wrenches and they still won’t unscrew until totally deformed. Have you used an air hammer on the filters flange? I have. Tighten hand tight, then 3 more turns, right? Thank you kindly for your dual wrench as mine hang with the ball valve. (Note; Silcone grease is recommend to wipe a thin layer on a vehicle weather stripping. It hydrates it, makes it last longer, looks like new, releases door in ice & freezing weather) ASE Master Tech, 78. Retired

THANK YOU! Older lady here & was able to get all 3 loose w/ blow dryer & a rubber mallet helping the wrench. Appreciate it!

Hey Gary the Water Guy - thank you for taking the time and effort to produce this excellent, and easy to understand, video tutorial on your method to remove a "stuck water filter housing" and the way to prevent this occurrence in the future. Keep up the good work!

Fantastic videos!! Very helpful. Thank you. Can you tell me if Oatey - Silicone Grease does the trick as well?
No apparently it is not meant to come into contact with potable water. We have the correct stuff here waterestore.com/products/hum-plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-5-gram?variant=43104223953109
CRAP. I twisted it the wrong way. So now it's even tighter. And the wrench broke lol. I blame the instruction manual. It said turn CLOCKWISE to tighten. So I did the opposite
Lefty loosey - righty tighty my wife always says.
I found the way we could get it off is put the wrench near bottom of housing was the secret for us and do it gently. Great info.
Thanks for the tip!
Hi Gary,
I tried heating my housing up with eh blow dryer. I have a strap wrench and I tried with all my might with a hammer tapping and all. It won't budge ..... Not sure how long it's been on there as we haven't been in the house too long. Any other tips ?
Thank you
For sure you shut off the water going to the housing and openned up a faucet downstream to release all of the pressure before you started?
Your suggestions have been extremely helpful in addressing this issue. I was pleased to find your knowledge in this area helpful, but it may be the only solution on RUclips!🗝🗝
Great tips and clearly explained! So glad I found this video. I was about to give up and call a plumber. 💲💲💲
Glad it helped Please share with friends and family!
Do filters unscrew clockwise or is this video mirrored?
I know usually it's anticlockwise to unscrew things but mine is proper tight so don't want to keep screwing it
Just remember, lefty loosie rightie tightie you can’t fail
Thanks. Need to try this on my dual filter system this week. Probably stuck for the filter piece not being removed.
I hope it helps
Use the hair dryer. It works really well
Yes, we have had lots of compliments on the hair dryer method.
Thanks for a great video, when I change my water filter, I put a little petroleum jelly (Vaseline) on my Oring, and that helps lube the Oring for future removal. Just like putting a film of oil on your oil filter before installing it on your vehicles. Thanks for your common sense videos.
Yes, but you should be using plumbers clear silicone grease instead of vaseline waterestore.com/products/hum-plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-5-gram Vaseline is petroleum based and will degrade that o ring over time.
You forgot to bleed the pressure down! It won't open if pressurized. SMH
Yes you do, but I did not forget I explain at the 55 second mark after shutting off the water going into the housing you open a downstream faucet to release the pressure. Also at the 1:09 mark I mention using the pressure release button to bleed off the pressure
Or you can go Mexican-style get the filter wrench and use a hammer loosen it up! Worked for me 😂
That would be if all else fails for me.
The hair dryer worked for me since I don't have any of those special wrenches.
Glad to hear! Please share video with friends and family.
Thanks so much for this video! We have a housing that has been in place for at least 4 years. It seems really stuck. I broke the plastic wrench, and am considering what type of tool I should get next. One of the issues is that the filter is located in our crawl space under the house, and it is difficult to get good leverage. I am afraid of breaking the pipes. I tried the hair dryer, but maybe I didn't heat it up long enough? I can't get the hair dryer all the way around to the back of the filter due to it's location. Any suggestions? thank you!
Keep trying but at some point if you can't get it open you will need to replace the whole housing.
Bleed off the water pressure first or get your foul words lined up cause you’re going to need them.
…..and a towel
Wait s second...you said left loose. Right tight. Why did you turn it to the right?
I loosened it to the left and then turned it slightly right so it would tighten slightly to keep it from wobbling duing the video. But you would turn it left and keep going left.
Thanks this was a great help for me! Purchased a waterfront property and on a drilled well with 2 water filters. No experience with this type of system. Your blow dryer trick did the job for me so thanks again!
Glad it helped! Please share with frineds and family!
Great video. Helped with my RV water filter which was in a tight space. The blow dryer option worked.
Glad to hear. Please share video with friends and family.
Thanks for the hints. I had forgotten to relief the pressure on the outlet side. I did shut off the outlet valve and pressed the relief valve on the filter housing, but it was still stuck. Once I relieved the pressure on the line and then shut the valve, the filter unscrewed easily. I use petroleum jelly (Vaseline) to lube the "O" ring and it has never failed me. I would also recommend that the strap used in case the supplied wrench won't work is to to a auto supply house and purchase a strap wrench that I have used to remove oil filters on 18-wheelers big diesel engines.
Glad it worked. Vaseline will degrade the orings. Better to use silicone grease waterestore.ca/products/plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-113-gram
My husband says thank you, thank you, thank you for the hair dryer tip. We weren't able to get the filters without your advice. Easy to remove once we heated it.
Glad I could help! Please share with friends and family.
The blow dryer worked beautifully! Thanks for saving me time and aggravation, really appreciate you!

Just to say thank you. I was able to change the filter without flooding my basement! Your instructions are crystal clear, to the point, without chitchat nor background music. I also appreciate the transcript.

Thank you for your helpful tips. I tried the strap approach and it worked great. Thank you again!

You’re a lifesaver. Hair dryer worked like a charm, and I made sure to use the plumber grease before putting the filter back on. Thanks!!!
You're welcome! Please share video with friends and family.
I started yelling at my whole house filter, that didn't work, then I tapped it with a pipe, that didn't work, tried the pipe on the tool, broke the tool, was going to try two tools and pipe next........
Keep trying.
I have water salt accumulation on the outside of the lid. I am in the process of cleaning the float in the little tube inside the water boss900. It came ou but I cannot put the float back in because of salt built up in the bottom. I am assuming the filter housing at the bottom is this tube is also plugged. How do I get rid of the salt at the bottom of the tank?
Great question! Since water absorbs salt, I would suck all the brine out with a shop vac, add hot tap water, about 1 gallon, let sit overnight so it absorbs some salt and then suck it out with the shop vac. You may need to do this several times.
Thank you for this. Mine is thoroughly stuck and it's inside the well pump housing and is awkward to even get to and not much room when you get there. So I think I'm going to go right to the "nuclear option" and just get that lisle wrench. Wish me luck!
So ....did it work?
I'm confused about the filter O-ring. Is there supposed to be one when you put the filter in??
The filter housing has an o ring yes. Some filters have an additional one, usually carbon filters but not sediment filters.
Thanks Gary, I'd struggled with mine for 4 hours, but 15 minutes after watching your video - I was done (the hair dryer did the trick).
Glad to hear! Please share video with friends and family.
For a smaller water filter housing such as an under sink system, easiest thing is to use a clamp-style oil filter wrench (4"). Very easy. Should cost less than $10 at an auto parts store. Usually listed as a swivel wrench. No need to grip at the top tabs. Just slip the wrench around the housing anywhere. The grip increases the tighter the housing is, so it will grab the housing and not slip. Very easy. cont"d. edit. >>>
I do not know if this type of wrench would come in a larger size, but if it did it might get expensive. but would be worth it IMHO. ps: just checked for a larger wrench and they are available for not much more than the 4".
Thanks for the tip!
The pipe trick plus the plastic wrench that came with it worked for me, thank you so much for sharing this valuable tip I was about to give up and just live with it.
Glad it helped! Please share video with frinds and family.
This video was so helpful! I didn’t have any of the extra items in the video to loosen the filter housing…except the blow dryer, it worked perfectly. My dad passed 3 1/2 years ago and my mom has me do a lot of the stuff he used to do and your videos helped me with the water filter. Thank you!

I was desperate to get the filter changed, it's actually been a few years since it had been. Reefing on it didn't really help since I'm not that strong so thought I'd try the hair dryer tip. It worked! Thanks!😊

Hair dryer worked! Love informative videos that are to the point. Nobody wants to hear somebody tell you something in 15 minutes when they coulda done it in 5.

Also, never tighten the filter housing using the tool. Hand tight is more than enough. Once you feel it tight by hand, one more quarter turn will do it.
Yes but you would need to use the tool for that one quarter turn.
TOO MUCH TALKING....
But did you get the information you need?

I already tried the SAME EXACT strap wrench and YES, the last time I installed the housing I silicone-greased the threads and O-ring. And it is STILL stuck. If I crank TOO hard I run the risk of cracking the housing and then will not be able to turn the water pressure back on without water spraying everywhere. I guess my next step is to buy another housing in case the current one cracks so I'll have a back up. These things SUCK!
Yes, I would definitely be ready, just in case.
Thank you, Gary - heating it did the trick. So relieved that we were able to do it ourselves - great advice and directions.

I couldn’t budge it until I released the pressure by opening the downside valve and turning on a tap...then it was dead easy. Brilliant advice, thanks so much.
Glad it helped! Please share with friends and family
Could someone explain more about the smaller flat o-rin? We found a pile of them near the filtration system in the house we bought, but when I changed the cartridge I didn't see any in the housing or in the cap. Where are they supposed to go?
If you didn't see it when you replaced the filter and it isn't leaking now they likely belong to a different housing that was replaced in the past.
Thank you!!! You completely saved me. Hair dryer worked wonders!
Glad I could help! Please share video with friends and family.
Thank you for your advice to apply heat to the outside. I have a Frizzlife TAM3. Managed to unscrew the filter but had trouble unscrewing the filter from the container. I rinsed the container outside with hot water and tried again and that did the trick. Thanks!
Glad it helped. Please share video with friends and family
You can add a stop ball valve at the bottom of the housing to drain the water from the housing. This takes the weight of water in the filter out. Drill a 1/4 inch hole and tap with a 1/4 tap to add the threads. Screw in the bal valve. Done.
Yes, or you can buy these housings that already have a drain port in the bottom. waterestore.com/search?pf_m_%3A%3Ajadepuma%3A%3Adiameter=Big+Blue+%284.5%22%29&q=viqua+filter+housing
I had the same problem at my new house....I could not shift the well filters or the pool filter housing.... Only by using grunt force. However I learned that shutting both inlet and outlet valves (all 6 in the case of my pool) the housings came off with ease. I think that any residual pressure in the system at all locks the filter in place. If you need brute force there is something wrong.
Agreed
I can’t get the red valve thing on top to push down nor can I get the filter housing to unscrew. The house has been empty for a year or so. Any suggestions?
Make sure that the water before the filter is shut off and all of the water pressure in the house is gone by opening a faucet first.
@@GarytheWaterGuy yes, thank you, I had already done that. It took all afternoon but I did finally get it open. I tried using a pipe to extend the wrench handle and next I tried tapping firmly against the rim and the bottom of the housing and I did finally get it to open. Even with the housing off that red relief valve thing didn’t depress any. But I got the filter changed at least. Thank you!
@@Lonesoul9791 The relief valve must be seized. Glad to hear that it worked for you.
Should I have a relief valve? Mine is just a indention where it looks like it should be

Thanks buddy! Did not know the pressure releasing button existed!
Glad you found it. Please share video with friends and family.
This is not a lot by any means but I can venture a 150 pounds all I did was break the plastic read that water filters did not budge... I'm going after a while strap wrench now
Good plan!
That is not lefty loosey, the lid is lefty, making the blue canister right (or clockwise from above)
Oh boy…. Like I said to someone else in the comments, put the wrench on the housing with the handle facing you. Push left to loosen, right to tighten
This is very embarrassing. I spent an hour or so under my house in mud and muck trying everything to unscrew it. I had no idea about the wrench it came with which was there the whole time. Soon as I saw you holding it in the first 2 seconds I felt like such an idiot but I am grateful as I never would've realised I needed it. It was there beside the purifyer but I had no idea what it was.
Glad to hear that the video helped. Please share video with friends and family!
I cannot get the plastic wrench on my water housing filter for the RV Caravan it will not go up there is no room and my old one is missing so the new one is tight and i cannot get it off so will have to go and get an oil wrench will see how it goes
Yes, or the strap wrench.
An even better solution would be for the engineers who design whole house water filter housings to figure out a "better way to build a mouse-trap".
Millions of customers are all dealing with the same problem and the companies selling these look at the problem and must say to themselves, oh well, this is the way we've always done it.
Yes, a better mousetrap is always a good solution
Best way to avoid a stuck filter is by not over tightening during installation. After a certain point of tightness, more tightening does not produce a better or more reliable seal, it simple guarantees a stuck filter housing next time.
Thank you for your input.
how to fix small drips from time to time, I hand tighten it, and wrench tighten it, still drips. then I apply silicone lubricant still drips. Running out of ideas. I have the same unit but a 20" version.
Did you check to make sure there are no old o rings stuck in the bottom? If not You likely need to replace the o ring.
I did not know that you were going to tell us to get the lyle strapper inch that's so funny i was on my way to pick it up from another video and i came nearest to see what else we could try we're going to try the blow dryer thing to because we didn't know about that... But one hundred percent those metal wrenches do nothing but destroy the old filter they are the worst possible idea... Exceptionally for people who deal with hard water so any of us yankees in ohio you're gonna know. Our filter is basically welded to the filter housing with hard water deposits i'm assuming.
Good to know.
Pls help me. I have a machine but my water taste not as good as purified water. I cannot afford to buy reverse osmosis. There is in the market you can buy cartridge contains different layers that composed of alkaline balls , activated carbon etc.. i dont like my water have higher pH level more than 8.5 but rather i want my water to have higher oxygen content. They say increasing oxygen content in water will improve the taste. Can you give me a filtrations that can enchance the taste of my water that can fit in 20 inches cartridge ?
You will need a Reverse Osmosis system like this one to improve the taste waterestore.com/products/goldline-50-reverse-osmosis-water-system
Thank you a lot, Gary. Your tip about using a pipe to leverage really saved my day!!

Mine doesn’t have a pressure release button so it’s locked air tight plus I think the guy who installed the system over tightened it, did it on purpose so we would call him to come change it and charge us a $300 service charge
You can realease the pressure yourself without the pressure release button by opening up a faucet downstream of the system.
This could be good. I changed 1 filter the first year. Than next time it was a no go. It's been 6 years now
