You would replace a whole house water filter cartridge whenever the water flow slows down in your home, cottage or cabin or after one year of use, whichever happens first. You don't want bacteria growing inside that filter! Prepare a bucket with clean soapy water ahead of time because once you open the filter housing you won't have access to water until you're finished.
1) Turn your water supply off. You probably have a shutoff on the supply line located before the filter. If not, go to the hydro panel and turn the pump off.
2) Release any water pressure in the water lines before you unscrew the water filter housing. You need to turn a faucet on inside the house to release the pressure and let the water run until it stops or at least slows to a trickle. Then shut off the water after the filter housing to keep the water from the house from draining back through the open filter housing. If the filter housing is stuck, check out this video • BEST 5 WAYS to OPEN an...
3) Place a bucket under the filter housing. Unscrew the housing and take it off being careful to minimize spilling the water from inside the housing.
4) Remove the old filter and clean the inside of the housing with soapy water and towels to remove any built-up debris. Check to make sure that there are no old rubber gaskets inside the filter housing.
5) Put some clear plumbers silicone grease on the O-ring, which will help preserve the O-ring, make it seal better and make it easier to remove the next time. Unwrap and slide the new filter into the housing and screw it back in place, slightly more than hand tight, about 1/8 to ¼ turn.
6) Turn the faucet off that you had running to release pressure. Turn the main water supply back on, partially. Check for leaks around the cartridge housing, if there are no leaks, open main water supply fully.
7) Flush the new filter with at least 3 or 4 gallons of water or until the water flowing after the filter is clear.

Are you replacing water filters this weekend? Watch this video first!
Just replaced mine, thanks to you!
So I have a blue filter thingy with the wrench on it, but it’s big… probly at least 20”. So how do I know what filter cartridge/insert goes in it? My furnace quit workin and the guys are sayin it’s low water pressure. 🤷♀️ Very frustrating… I’ve been without heat and/or hot water since beginning of April .
Hi Gary, I can’t get the blue housing off it’s so tight I’m afraid I’ll brake it. We bought the house and it came with it. I’m new to this.
Thank you soooo much🤗
I’m a single woman who was catching hell trying to replace my filter but it was so tight I couldn’t loosen it. Thanks to your video, I found out why it was hard to loosen (bc I didn’t drain the sink water or press that red button first to release the pressure). I really was about to hire someone thinking I would never be able to do it myself.
I’m very grateful you took the time to share your knowledge🤗😆
Glad it helped! Please share video with friends and family!
Thank you for this great video. My husband passed away this last February and he always took care of this stuff. Your video help a lot and I was able to change the filter out with no issues and no leaking. Thank goodness we had extra filters and I knew where they were. Thanks again. Having to learn all this stuff that my hubby did for this home... is.... making me miss him even more.
Glad it helped. Please share video with friends and family!
I paid my plumber twice to change my filters, and in watching him I figured I could do this myself. Gary's great tutorial gave me the confidence to give it a try, and happy to report total success! Grateful for the additional video on how to unstick difficult filter housings (which I had). Thank you Gary for your great instruction!🤩
That is awesome! Please share video with friends and family.
Hi! Can't seem to turn my Whirlpool water softener valve to the "off" or "bypass" positions. It's stuck it the place where it says "filter." I turned off whole house water but can't turn off water to softener. Any suggestions?
Gary, just wanted to say THANK-YOU SIR!, your video gave me both the knowledge and confidence to get this task done on my first home with a whole house water filter set up. Thank-you so much

This video is fantastic! Clear instructions and very helpful. I get anxious about doing these things myself and this allowed me to replace my filter without worries. Thank you!

Thank you so much Gary! I was struggling to change my filter until I watched your video! I have this bookmarked for next time when it’s time to change. I remember lefty loosey & righty tightie 👌🏾

Very simple. I don't like messing with plumbing, but this was easy to follow no problem. Thanks for the great tutorial.

This is a very well done video. I need to change my filter. The plumber said it would cost $300.00 ! He even said the price was ridiculous and to do the change myself. Having no mechanical skills, I was about to pay the $300. Your careful step-by-step approach has given me the courage to try. Thank you so much.
Thank you. Yes, give it a try! Please share video with friends and family!
@@GarytheWaterGuy I ordered the parts and changed the filter myself, with no problems. I had your video on my i-pad while I did it. Thanks again.
You should try it. I never thought I'd be doing anything like this but one winter my pipes from my well pump froze and everything broke. It wasn't as bad as I thought especially with this man's help.
@@billyray6913 Thanks for the encouragement. I did get up the nerve to change the filters and guess what???? IT WORKED!! Actually, it is time now to replace the filter again.
I went to change my filter today. I have done this before. I wanted to double check I was doing it correctly, Thank you for your video. I had the housing in hand, I went to step off the ladder because the filter was very high. I slipped, dropped the housing and broke it. I went to the store, no they couldn’t find the same one because this unit was 21 years old. 😡I bought a new unit, attempted to install it three times but have a small leak. I have water, it’s my son’s birthday and I will deal with it tomorrow. Plumbing is not my favorite DIY project.
Sorry to hear about the leak. It always works best to use teflon tape and pipe dope on the threads to prevent leaks.
I did use Teflon tape. Pipe dope is new to me, I will do that. Thanks so much!!
Thanks Gary!
I just changed my big blue 20’ on my own and my water was cloudy.
I found your video and repeated the process (correctly this time)
And problem solved!
I guess it doesn’t hurt to do it correctly.👍🏻

What did you do incorrectly the first time?
Awesome, informative video! My worries are gone so I can get started on this. Thank you!

Followed your instructions exactly and worked out perfectly, thank you for this video!!!
Glad it helped! Please share video with friends and family!
How do i know which shutoff is "upstream" and which shutoff is "downstream"? My filter is in the middle of a loop off of the main water pipe into the house. Also, i am assuming that the "open" position is when the handle is in line with the pipe. Is that correct?
If you follow the plumbing from the main shit off that would upstream. Yes, open is when the handle is inline with the pipe
Thanks for such wonderful video. The instructions are clear, yet thorough.
Glad it was helpful! Please share video with friends and family.
I have to watch this video every single time I do this task because i am always insecure about lefty loosey since it’s so hard to move…also my filter has round rubber disks on top and bottom centers, though my system looks exactly like yours…and those rubber wafers make the filter wobble during screw in. I just wish they’d made it a bit easier. But I get it done with your reinforcement that I’m doing it correctly. Thanks.
Glad to hear. Please share video with friends and family
Super helpful video! Thanks!
You're welcome. Please share video with friends and family.
Thanks Gary. Wish we watched your video before tackling it. We didn't realize there was a pressure button or that we could have opened up a cold water facet in the house to release pressure! Finally got it off, but another problem arose with the O-Ring. It was stretched out a bit, but we thought we could just screw it back on with it anyway. BIG MISTAKE! It leaked like a sieve and we had a terrible time trying to get it back off even without pressure. USE ONLY A FITTING O-RING in good condition! Our 5 minute project ended up being 1.5 hours!
Yes, that can easily happen. Thanks for your tip
Great advice!!! Thank you - helped me more than you think, I am a complete dummy. Now I have good water presssure again!

I don’t have a shutoff valve AFTER the filter housing. What will happen? Any extra steps I should take?

Is your housing cap installed properly in the video? I thought the pressure relieve button was on the inlet side of the cap but your video shows it on the outlet side.
No, it is on the inlet side. If you zoom in you can see it says "IN" on the top.
@@GarytheWaterGuy Right, but your video, at 1:55 says the inlet is on the right. Which means the water is going into the outlet and this housing is unidirectional. I know it's just a demo setup, but thought it was worth saying.
Thanks!

After I shut off valve to filter and open a faucet to slow the water, do I turn it off or leave it open until the end of the filter replacement.
Doesn't matter either way, you can close the faucet once the pressure has been relieved or leave it open.
Thanks Gary.

I have a whole house water filter, we moved into this house a few months ago and the shower water smells like chlorine. Is this an indicator that the filter needs to be changed?
Yes, likely be sure to use a carbon filter like one of these waterestore.ca/collections/kx-matrikx-filters
Can you use food grade silicone spray instead of grease ?
I really don't know, never tried.
Thanka for the video really appreciate. I just have my filter change few wekks back but it's really loud. Could you please tell me what to do? Thanks.
What is really loud and when?
@@GarytheWaterGuy when I am using the water the filter system gets really loud, if I open the by pass it'll be quite.
Never heard of this before, must be some kind of restriction.
@@GarytheWaterGuy Just have the service from the company, the guy told me the check valve was full of dirt and sand and the what makes noise. I forgot to ask him what the check valve is. The noise only happens when the bypass is off.

Very nice and informative video. Question. I have shut off valves immediately before and after the blue filter housing. If I shut off both in the order you describe, do I still need to drain all the water from the house before changing the filter?
You don't need to drain all the water from the house after shutting off the inlet, just enough to release the pressure.
this is a very clear, easy video. no idea why my water still comes out black. maybe I damaged the filter and the charcoal is coming out?
New carbon filters take many gallons of water to flush out the carbon fines.
local hardware stores not stocking food grade lubricant. are there better places to look for quick turnaround?
Yes, we have it here waterestore.ca/products/plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-113-gram
Hi great video! If your filters need changing can this make the pressure valve go down? I guess it’s supposed to be 60 Mine is reading 35. I did take cover off where electrical is. The high screw I turned it I had pressure up to 55 but now back to 35? Do u think it’s filters or valve?
Thank you
If your filetrs are clogged you will have a loss of pressure. The pressure switch controls the pressure but there is a maximum and a minimum so ther is always fluctuation between upper and lower of about 20 psi.
I don’t have a shutoff after the filter housing will I have a problem with water buildup?
No, you will just have more water draining out when the filter has been removed. Have an extra bucket ready.
My house has a 3/4 inch Geekpure 10" housing, but it is not as big around as the one in this video. I ordered 4.5" filter replacement and o rings from Geekpure, but they are way too big circumference. There is no identification on the housing to tell me what model it is. How do I know which filter and o ring to order?
Every brand is different. You will need to get it from Geekpure, if they even have them available.
Where is the link if you cant get the housing off?
Here it is ruclips.net/video/BcTaSyBiD78/видео.html
Why is it after I put the case back on, it sometimes takes me four or five tries? It just drips and leaks from parts of the casing from the top. Even with fresh o-rings that are nice and greased up. Do I just need a new case?
Maybe but more than likely you have an old o ring stuck in the bottom of the housing which adds extra length to the filter making it more difficult to seal.
We bought our house 15 yrs ago. We have a water softening system with a whole house filter attached. Not knowing what to do I did nothing at all, not putting too much thought into our water quality. We recently had a plumber come in and when I asked about it he said it should be changed yearly and I have all kinds of bacteria in there. He said he can remove the system entirely. Now I'm worried about our water quality. Would it be enough to just change the filter to immediately better the water or is it smarter to remove the system entirely?
I'm assuming that your water source is well water? If so, I would replace the filter, disinfect your plumbing, clean out the water softener with this waterestore.ca/products/pro-res-care-water-softener-resin-cleaner and add a few bags of salt to the water softener. Thsi video will help you with the disinfection process ruclips.net/video/cQyNRu5LqOM/видео.html
@@GarytheWaterGuy Actually no it is city water. I most likely will get rid of the softener but may attempt to keep the whole house filter now I know what to do with it. Thanks for your help.
Hi my son just changed our filter but it tinted brown and smells
What do you think is wrong?
Thank-You!
You need to flush the filter more with water
@@GarytheWaterGuy Thank-You! You were absolutely right. The next day it was fine!!!
I replaced it but now my kitchen sink is not running water and the air pressure is all jacked.
Unless you flushed a lot of debris after the filter housing this would not affect your concerns.
Why is it every time I do this, the O ring comes out and suddenly seems to grow? It no longer fits and I can’t get it back in the channel!😢
You are stretching the O ring when you tighten it by using the friction between the cap and the housing. Yopu need to lubricate it with clear plumbers silicone greae first waterestore.ca/products/plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-113-gram?variant=30738297258041
protip: turn the water back on when you finish
Yes.
OMG > Just Change the Filter!!! enough blahblahblah
You can always scroll through the blahs.
Why ruin business for the plumbers out there? I mean even though 50% of the people will be able to do it themselves, some will be lazy and some will over think and gain fear of causing a flood ect... just leave all the work to the professional. Maybe the plumber will give the home onwer some discounts on further services. Imagine a plumber comes out for this type of small quick service call. You as a home owner than have a reliable professional you can build a relatuonship with and if have any bigger issues can get them to help you regularly. Always think about the long run, especially home owners who, like i said are lazy, doubtful or just never use tools ever in their lives. Cheers
That will very well be the solution for many homeowners but the ones that are in remote locations or cannot get a plumber to do the work for them this is a potential solution. Some homeowners will just watch the video and say “I’m not gonna do all that” and now know for sure they need to call a plumber.
Thanks @garythewaterguy ! Was able to service this myself since its been so hard to get someone out here to do it. Definitely will just be doing it myself from now on!
Glad it helped. Please share video with friends and family.
Got a video to change the carbon filter out of the ones that are three times the size of scuba tanks, in the garage?

Thanks for the video. Super helpful for first time changing my filter in my new place. I have a 20 inch filter and you were not kidding that it was heavy!!
Glad it helped! Please share video with friends and family!
Hi. Just changed my whole house water filter thanks to your help. Tyvm.
Now I have two questions.
Water was tested and it’s fine but we seem to be getting air bubbles that disappear after they rise to the top. Installers have idea why but do you have any thoughts on this? Air bubbles are super small and fine.
We have the full setup with two tanks that remove both iron and bacteria and smells like sulfur etc.. also have the ultraviolet light. It’s got a pantair filter with shutoffs before and after the filter. Also has pressure relief red button.
Original filter did see the winding but the replacements have a blue paper covering that doesn’t come off. Is this new for pantair?
Glad the video helped. The air bubble are coming from the iron and sulphur filter which injects air intio the water to oxidize out the iron and sulphur. Not sure what you mean by the replacement filter having a blue paper covering.
Your system sounds similar to mine... as I also have an ultraviolet light put can't determine how to change it. Do you have the WatrPur XL system?
Thanks! Clear instructions made changing the filter easy. Question - when you're filling the new filter to check for leaks with the after-filter valve still closed, should you be using the pressure release value?
You can but not necessary.
@@GarytheWaterGuy thanks!

Wow I wish I found this video last month just paid 450 to have mine changed
Well at least now you know what to do going forward.
@@GarytheWaterGuy They made it seem complicated and that extra steps where needed. Though watching this now the 30 minutes they spent inside and outside makes sense.
Thanks Gary. I have a couple of smaller Rainfresh filters in-line but they work great. I've found that unless I open the outflow shut off valve (& a tap) before slowly opening the inflow valve that the resulting air pressure build up seems to cause leaks to open up at the top of the cartridge housing (air wants to escape somewhere). Also I appreciate your advice to apply plumbers silicone grease to the "o" rings (will buy some today) and to use the wrench to tighten the housing. To date I've only hand tightened it as was recommended but have had issues with leaks more often than not. Thanks for a great video.
Yes, I would definitely use the grease waterestore.ca/products/plumbers-secret-clear-silicone-grease-food-grade-113-gram and if it leaks it isn't tight enough so use the wrench to tighten a little more.
Thank you so much for this video! A few husband-wife discussions of which valves to close, which we survived 🤣 We cheered when it unscrewed without a problem, and the gasket was intact! SO GLAD we didn't pay hundreds of dollars to have someone else do this!
I am too! Please share video with friends and family.
This is an awesome video but I don't have a red button to release pressure so what do I do?
You don't need one, in fact I rarely use them. I just shut off the water before the filter and open up a faucet downstream and let the water flow until it stops. Then you can open the housing.
@@GarytheWaterGuy This is the question that I wanted to ask. I have a dual filter whereas on housing has a red button, but the other one does not. Thanks for a great video because until I saw the cost I was going to have my plumber change it!
Would have been nice to seem him add the filter and install it.
Thank you for your feedback. I am always looking at ways to improve my videos.
My dad's a genius, he installed a sink right below the water filter. Yeah!!
Yes, very convenient!
This video helped for my first ever filter change, thanks. Only problem is I have water leaking out of my red pressure release knob and not sure why this is happening. Any help or insight would be greatly appreciated
Yes, from the inside there is a screw inside that red button that can be tightened
Thanks so much Gary. I had never changed a water filter before and was about to call a plumber and pay the $300. It looks easy when the filter housing is empty! But wrestling a 20” housing with a filter back on and getting it lined up properly without disturbing the O-ring is a chore! Just did mine and it’s not quite as easy as it looks. This video was overall very helpful, though.
Glad to hear it helped. When it comes time to replace it, you should consider one of these, they have a drain plug at the bottom waterestore.com/products/viqua-awp42b-v-20-bb-filter-housing Makes it a lot easier!

Question. Bought a house with a filter and just attempted to change it. The O ring that you mentioned seems to be too big for the housing unit. It just falls over the edge of the housing. Did it stretch out? Do I need a new O ring?
Yes, it stretched and out if you can't get it to seal you will need a new one.
Thank you! I’ll be buying my cartridges from you going forward.
That would be great! We are at waterestore.ca/
I have a whole house filter similar to this, I use the string style filter
And my shower head is still constantly clogged with grit
Same with kitchen faucet, any ideas?
You need a finer filter. How long and what diameter is the filter that you are currently using?
@@GarytheWaterGuy
10 inch long 35 micron and 2.5 inch diameter
Thanks for the reply
I have a 20 inch Big Blue and I do not see a red pressure relief button showing in your excellent and helpful video. How do I make certain pressure is sufficiently reduced so I can safely continue filter replacement. Thank you.
Good question! Some brands don't have that button and to be honest I rarely use the button anyway. Shut off the water before the filter and then open up a faucet downstream and let the water trickle out till it stops. All of the pressure is gone.
Thanks for the video, Gary. Made the change a cinch.

How do you know what type of filter you need?
Great question. this filter will tell you.
It’s not lefty loosey, it’s the opposite!
Put the filter housing wrench on the filter housing with the handle facing you. Turn it left (lefty) to loosen or turn it right (righty) to tighten.
After watching your video, you gave us the courage to change the filter. We have been needing to do it for way longer than we care to admit. Thank you for explaining it so clearly and giving us the information and making it easy for us to do it!

Hi Gary, thanks so much for the video(s). You're so knowledgeable and your explanations are very clear. I will be sending in an order over the weekend for some replacement parts for my VIQUA UV system I bought from you. Cheers, Michael
Glad it was helpful! Thank you for your business.
Great video. Really came in handy. One note: Gary says "lefty loosey, righty tighty" but he turns the wrench to the RIGHT to LOOSEN it. Most filter housings work this way: tighten when turned to the left and loosen when turned to the right. Took me a little while to figure out I was turning it the wrong direction.
Nope at 3:33 when I say "lefty loosey, righty tighty" I am turning the wrench to the left.
I do mine hand tight like a spin-on oil filter. Never had a leak or concern. Mine have flat sealing ring instead of circular cross-section O-ring, maybe that's the difference. BTW, love your videos, they were really helpful when I was messing with my proprietary Clack water softener head (turned out I just needed new media, but I learned a bunch).
Thanks for the input. Please share video with friends and family.
I can open my filter housing. My problem is that the filter media on our (new to us) home is SO rusty that I can't pull it out of the housing. I tried using pliers and it just smashed the filter and tore off a small chunk, but didn't budge it a bit. Any suggestions? Our filter housing is about 20 inches long. Thanks in advance! (I was thinking perhaps a bottle of CLR poured into it for a few hours might help?)
Maybe some of this dissolved and poured in and left over night.
You’re my new go-to for every time I change my filter and you helped me learn I was using a 20 micron filter when I should have been using a 50! So appreciative. Problem now fixed 🙌🏼

Hey thanks for the video, really helped as this was the first time it was time to change the filter since having the system installed. Your points about opening a faucet in the house and shutting off water supply valves really helped. Being a non- plumber I would've not thought of that. And about the Oring sealant which I do have.
