Watching that bear rip, claw, trash, smash and toss Leo around like he was a rag doll was so horrific. And the scene is long and drawn out.
This is the thing. Tom Hardy is mesmerizing like DiCaprio once was, IMO. But that bear scene put Leo back in the spot light. Best find some good scripts to keep in the spot light because Tom Hardy is a captivating actor and he's going run everyone out of town.
For the first 20 minutes I didn't even know it was Tom. His performance was so amazing. I think Leo with the dialect and the bear scene makes him a lock and probably an Oscar Favorite for Lead. The competition looks like Michael Caine, Will Smith, Eddie Redmayne, johnny Depp, Matt Damon, but I think Leo is the strongest contender.

I read that Leo hasn't won the Oscar yet although he's racked up lots of awards since the age of 11. Maybe 2016 will be his Oscar year. Just for that brutal bear mauling scene alone he deserves it. i disagree. The one thing I've never liked about a Johnny Depp is that he is more of a impersonator then he is a actor. All of his roles are amazing but it's like he's doing really good impersonations of the charecter that he is playing.
+ishmael herring - To impersonate means to exaggerate aspects of that person to bring out the essence of the person. But that is acting as that person. Jamie Fox did a fine job of impersonating Ray Charles in the movie "Ray."
I saw Kevin Spacey performed a bunch of impersonations of other actors on "Inside The Actors Studio," hosted by James Lipton, that were 100% right on.
Tom Hardy is fast becoming the next actor of choice for all major movie directors, kinda like DiNiro and DiCaprio.

Can we all appreciate the interviewer here ? It must have been intimidating for him to be interviewing two of Hollywood hottest men but he just keeps it casual and makes it feel like a fluid conversation
That is mastery shown by this man, Tom Hardy, that made Fitzgerald so understandable and clear in where he came from in his cynicism.
I would say he is actually very human and understandable. Atrocious deeds done, and a scary person to be around and to be having to trust. A survivalist faced with countless dangers that has collapsed in to defensiveness to just about everything, thinking only about number one... Truly a masterful translation of the character to the screen.

+Sokratis Dalakas --- Agreed... I didn't get the feeling of Fitz being inherently a bad seed. it was the external situations that made him make the choices he made and his threshhold was low to entering the dark side. As good as DiCaprio was, I enjoyed Fitgerald's character more.
+Red Head yet very human. that was the problem. while you felt really bad for leonardo's character and you hated what tom's character had done, you still kind of wanted him to live because all he wanted was the pay he was promised to get his land. that's it. his performance made fitzgerald sympathetic.

I didn't even realize until now how much different are their voices in real life from the film... In the movie they both speak in rough deep voices (plus Tom adds a brilliant Texan accent!), their voices are unrecognizable here! I mean, am I the only one who noticed that? I f*ckin love those two, great actors! Each of them deserves an Oscar for the Revenant, especially Leo (but Tom was equally good, if not better), he has been waiting for that award far too long, give that poor man an Oscar already! #OscarforLeo

Tom Hardy absolutely hit the point right at the end when he spoke about the stunning beauty of an environment that wants to kill you. I'm from Manitoba, in the middle of Canada, and when wandering and canoeing in the wilderness, the idea often struck me that a major part of the beauty of this wild environment is that it is utterly hostile. Nature wants to eat you as much as you want to eat naturally. Being alone there, and coming out alive, is amazingly life affirming.
Not so much hostile as it just doesn't care. The trees look on while any kind of brutality is occurring. (I do think this movie the Revenant went over the top with the brutality though. It didn't show any of the more wonderful elements, only pain and anguish).

A truly epic movie on all counts. The acting (Leo and Tom especially), the camera work, the FX (The bear attack. WOW!), all the way down to the sound FX. You don't just watch this movie, you EXPERIENCE it.
As soon as I heard the gist of this film and that Tom Hardy was in it, I immediately questioned if Tom played the bear. If that was the case I genuinely wouldn't have bat an eyelid.

Leo is very calm, self-confident, and very secure guy. And Tom is quite wierd, he seems a bit anxious but not because of the interview, he is hardly paying attention to the interview, its like if he was thing about everything except for this moment .

Film is 2.5 hours long and has paper thin plot. Both Leo and Tom were great in it. They saved the film.
If anybody is in two minds as to whether to go and see this film: do (especially while it's in cinemas). The way this story is told just brutally highlights the futility of existence, and one man's genuinely inhuman struggle despite it. It's a tour de force of human spirit in the face of absolute, unequivocal hopelessness. It leaves you in a state of existential crisis. It fills you with the fear of God, quivering from the almighty savagery of nature. The performance from DiCaprio alone is unbelievable, and Hardy, despite having a smaller role, might be even better. The incomparable cinematography and mind-breaking audio design is worth the $15 to see in the cinema. Best film of 2015, no doubt.

Tom hardy was amazing in his Accent and his dialogues. He performs all of his roles perfectly. DiCaprio has always been the best in Acting. He had very few dialogues in the movie and all that he did was pure flawless presentation of his acting skills. Had there been proper dialogues between him and Tom, that would have been a power pack. DiCaprio deserves an Oscar.

Just watched the film. Truly great. I kept hearing about how long it is from friends but honestly for me it was fine. The acting was good. Both Leo and Hardy put on excellent performances but they weren't alone in that regards. But what I can give the highest praise to was the pacing of the film which was phenomenal. A huge chunk of the film is Leo's character clinging to life and surviving in the wilderness. Now that naturally slows down the film but it was inter-cut with enough moments of intensity and action to keep you excited whilst remaining honest to the situation whilst keeping that intense gruelling tone. I was pleasantly surprised after preparing myself to be dragged through a dull yet appreciable movie. Not at all.
How long it was...? A movie could go on for 5 hours if it's great. Who cares about the length? That was their concern?
