The Most Beautiful Car I Have Ever Driven.... Is a Jaguar Kit Car!? (Kougar Sports Review)

  • Today something genuinely unusual. Another gem from www.totalheadturners.com - a Kougar Sports. It might look old, but this is a nearly new kit, built from the running gear of a 1960s Jaguar (with the 4.2L straight six) and a custom chassis and body.

    James,
I didn't think I'd find this installment very interesting but I gotta say this one was just the best!!!
Your honest hard-earned enthusiasm passion and shear joy in being able to do what you do for a living is palatable. It's what makes your commentary so delightful.
Reminds me of the great and sorely missed LJK Setright !
    Or the child-like joy of
    Jay Leno.
    Just whooping it up...
And yes....a bit more detail cinematography could be nice but if I want that I'll watch "Doug Demuro".
But if I really want to get a sense of what it 'feels' like to properly drive any particular automobile in the real world.....your my go to!
And in the end, isn't that what it's really all about?
And CONGRATULATIONS on the Ferrari !
Keep doin' what your doing and thanks for the smiles.
    👍👍
    Carl
(....Dream of one day owning a Morgan 3-wheeler🤪)

You did achieve a very clear voice quality for such a situation. I'm impressed with the microphone + wind sock combination. You could almost go full biggles with a 1930s Brooklin flying helmet. They do look beautiful, but in Britian (and Sepecially Scotland) this kind of car really needs more of a screen here. But imagine this in Califonia or parts of France.

I have never been a fan of two seater sport cars, as my belief is that we peaked with the Austin Healey & TR6 then after that the motor industry lost its way in the two seater open top car sector. This has totally changed my way of thinking and it is such a perfect car for taking your wife out on a Sunday drive cos you really would have a great excuse not to talk to her. You just say that you are enjoying the car.

One of my first cars in early twenties money was tight was an MGTD which previous owner had put a straight six Jaguar engine in.
The engine was so large that the foot scuttle area had to be modified resulting in reduced leg area giving as much legroom as an old Land Rover with seat forward. Nevertheless was great fun to drive and the engine note when roaring away was exquisite...

I nearly bought a Kougar Sports but in the end went for the Ronart W152, similar but different. Started with the straight 6 which I then sold and got the V12 version. Not a good decision as the S6 was so much better that the V12, in the end I sold this as well and now potter around in a series 2A Landrover. Both of my Ronarts ended up in Germany, both owned by the same person!

A friend of mine had an old 1960's Jaguar S Type 3.8 which, sadly, was rather rotten. He bought one of the very first Kougar bare frames and we transferred all the S Type running gear etc into the Kougar. The result was an awesome vehicle. 9680 KP was black with red leather upholstery. In its original form from Kougar Cars, it had a low wrap around perspex screen but he replaced that with two vintage aero screens. We spent a wonderful Sunday morning trying to see how fast it would go around the perimeter track of the disused RAF Tangmere. He sold it in the mid nineties. Wonder if it's still out there?

I remember when Road & Track magazine did a big article on these when they first were being sold in the late 70's. The pictures in the article didn't impress me that much; the rounded, tapering separate fenders in particular seemed a bit over the top. For some reason, the angles at which you caught the car in your video demonstrate what I missed back then -- it's the relative position of the body in relation to those fenders that makes the car so utterly stunning. Honestly, it would be the perfect Hirondel for Leslie Charteris' Simon Templar.

Great video of a fantastic car. It's not all about speed, there's a whole lot of style and charisma here.
