Actually it is better and easier to not use the clutch at all. I used to drive a 58 Mack dump truck with a 5 speed main and a 4 speed aux. Split shifting both trannies at the same time... no clutch. Down shifting like that is just about an art form.

@@JorgeOliveira-ow5uu I ownd a 2004 156 and it was the most unreliable and poorly built car that I've owned so where is the clichés and ignorance in that?
@@mick0846 You might have your grievances with that particular car, but that might well depend on whether proper service and maintenance was given or not. Regardless, even if what you say is true and you got a defective unit, that doesn't mean all Alfa's are rubbish or that it's something exclusive to that brand. All car manufacturers have problems and defective units as well as good cars. What you commented was indeed false and cliché. It's a popular norm to say Alfa's are unreliable or rust away, based on false perception. Alfa Romeo did have problems in the past, but it learned from it. Go check reliability index of today's cars and see for yourself.
I'm not talking about brand new cars hence why we are watching Jay Lenno's garage. I'm talking in general and about my experience with alfa's and everyone else's their are clichés for a reason, alfa's did rot! and where not built very well throughout a period of time . Fact!... you only have to look at the depreciation values of them. They might be built better than anything on the market today but its going to be a long time before they loose the reputation
you would think jay leno would feel like he was born in the wrong era. but he has the best of new and old school. great appreciation for all cars. someone i really admire.
@@joesterling4299 -- I think you missed the point. The original comment was ironic. In the long run, saving history is more gratifying than a life centered on bimbos.
@@joesterling4299 -- The phrase "And people say...." is a giveaway for an ironic comparison. And there aren't many other ways to make a statement about Hef's luck here, in comments about Jay Leno and his cars, than for it to be an implied comparison. It's hard to claim that the original post was anything other than a way of saying that Jay Leno is luckier than Hugh Hefner.
I love this video, I have watched it so many times. That exhaust note always brings me back. It truly is an opera! Jay is having the time of his life in this car.
Kyong Hansen firing order I believe is close to or the same as a Ford V8. The Alfa Montreal was a 2.6l dohc V8 and had the same firing order as a Ford V8. This engine is basically two 1.3l bolted together unlike the V8 which people say it's two engines but really it was designed and casted as a whole new engine. It would be awesome recreating the straight 8 with modern Alfa 2.0L engines
This is a modern engine! DOHC if you think in America they still use lifters and camshaft in the block! Lol in europe we stop in the 60s! Except from some work vehicle or very slow utilitarian car
Bob Groh that's actually the straight cut gears from the transmission. You can hear a similar whine in some cars when they go reverse because some reverse gears are straight cut. I love the sound straight cut gears make.
Schluesselmensch I was sitting here thinking Jano had a good look at a Miller motor before he designed his engine. But Miller had a good look at the Peugeot engine before he designed his stuff. And honestly I wonder if Leo Gossen wasn't the inspired one of the group. Engineers were stealing from one another back then, and still are I suppose. I read somewhere that Bugatti bought two Miller race cars and pretty much copied the engine for his race car. I'm not much on hot rods, but I'd love to have one with a Miller or an Offy in it. Just think of the money you'd save on head gaskets.
me and my dad enjoy watching jay, partly because he doesn't do stupid crap like smoking the tire for twenty minutes, or doing donuts! we've always built big block mopars. but I've just gotten my first import, a 97 prelude we are working on. i'd like to see a nice tuned fifth gen prelude or s2000. not some piece of crap ricer, but a good quality build.
ihateliberals hondas can be fun. People poop on them for no reason. I had a crx that was swapped with a newer vtec engine and that thing was so much fun in the mountains. It was just so light it felt like a go kart. And it was just begging for more rpm, it would rev all day. Jay has a honda s600 that he loves, but he wont get into the other classic hondas of the 1990s. He'd love the s2000, or even the simplicity of the crx.
What a fantastic sound! I find myself aroused, and that's perfectly fine! If you close your eyes and listen to this car, its not at all hard to imagine your are listening to a Lola or McLaren CanAm car or an old TransAm car, the 8cyl music, the straight cut gears.... Fantastic!
Wow. That engine could put me to sleep, and I mean that in the utmost best possible way. That's why I watch Leno's garage. That is just a beautiful piece of machinery. A true engineering masterpiece. Bravo.
Bugatti, did some amazing things and did some revolutionary things. All great things must come to an end at some point but you still have to respect what they did.
The thing is, if you update the technology, it's no longer a replica. If you want modern technology, why not just buy a new car instead of going to all the trouble to build a machine like this one? As an old car enthusiast, I appreciate seeing and hearing something like this Alfa Romeo a lot more.
They don't have them (until recently) in the US and they don't really have recent car worth reviewing. And that is coming from a true Alfa owner and fan!
Would be nice to see a tipo b monoposto (p3) on this show, absolutely fantastic car, and far superior to the bugs of that time, and there is also that fantastic nuvolari victory in the german gp.
That was totally amazing ride....Jay does a great job of bringing forward the history of the design and that this 32 Alfa changed the competition. Wow...thanks for posting this !

You don't realize how difficult it is for some people to solder, I spent 7 years trying to teach Jr HS kids how to solder, some people just don't get it, that's why the electrical codes now specify a mechanical connection.
Thanx for the ride. This car was, and still is an engineering masterpiece. It doesnt matter its a replica, because its is the real thing built recently so it can be experienced the way it should be. Most alfas now you pass on the side of the road usually with their bonnets up blowing off steam
@@mick0846 Alfa Romeo today are one of the most reliable car manufactures.
You are just full of ignorance and clichés.
And people say Hugh Hefner is the luckiest man in the world.....
was*
Yep. Got away with every bit of it too. Doesn't get luckier for a guy than Hef.
@@joesterling4299 -- I think you missed the point. The original comment was ironic. In the long run, saving history is more gratifying than a life centered on bimbos.
@@grizzlygrizzle It wasn't your post. So how do you know it wasn't dead serious? Even had I agreed with you, my answer would have been the same.
Jay is having the time of his life in this car.
wow, that really does sound like a modern engine. Incredible!
@@jimmygrant3212 I am a Mustang guy. This sounds like a pushrod Ford v8. Awesome sound!
This is a modern engine! DOHC if you think in America they still use lifters and camshaft in the block! Lol in europe we stop in the 60s! Except from some work vehicle or very slow utilitarian car
This is Jay's True Niche!!! I wish his garage gave tours to the public! I love this show!
The sound of that engine is pure pornography
Loved that supercharger whine! What a car!
Bob Groh that's actually the straight cut gears from the transmission. You can hear a similar whine in some cars when they go reverse because some reverse gears are straight cut. I love the sound straight cut gears make.
One designer who Jay should have included in that list was Harry Miller. Most of the fellows he mentioned weren't a patch on Miller.
Astonishing!! I'm hearing my heart pumping passion. Proud of this italian masterpice!
Thanks Mr.Leno!!
Europe: DOHC in 1932
America: OHV in 2017
Europe : 1600 cc 130 hp
Usa 4000 cc 130 hp LOL
Japan: lawnmowers DOHC
one of the best soiunding engine's ever made,
smooth throaty, powerful.
music to my ears,
incredible,
What a great advertisement for America Jay is. Smashing chap - oh, and the car was good too...!
I've watched this video so many times, this is bellisimo! I hope i'm spelling that right. What a magnificent auto, never take this video down!
me and my dad enjoy watching jay, partly because he doesn't do stupid crap like smoking the tire for twenty minutes, or doing donuts! we've always built big block mopars. but I've just gotten my first import, a 97 prelude we are working on. i'd like to see a nice tuned fifth gen prelude or s2000. not some piece of crap ricer, but a good quality build.
ihateliberals hondas can be fun.
J is the original gear heads gear head. Truly a great caretaker for the car guys. Thanks for sharing. All the best for you and your family
Rev this three times at my grave, and I shall rise like Lazarus.
You have to respect Jay for sharing all his motors with the public, something I wish the Sultan of Brunei would do.
Bravo.
you feel like Nuvolari haha love it
@14:34 is the greatest shot of all time to me. This magnificent looking car blast past the modern crap. It's so refreshing
Screw the Bugattis these are awesome.
Bugatti, did some amazing things and did some revolutionary things. All great things must come to an end at some point but you still have to respect what they did.
Let’s have one of each
lol
Fantastic. Thanks, Jay, for the great sound recording. Sends shivers down the spine, truly.
Is your shop in the Valley? Would love to catch Jay shooting an episode driving down the 210.
The thing is, if you update the technology, it's no longer a replica. If you want modern technology, why not just buy a new car instead of going to all the trouble to build a machine like this one? As an old car enthusiast, I appreciate seeing and hearing something like this Alfa Romeo a lot more.
Jay why dont you ever do alfas on your show?
Its a company with one of the richest histories.
+Blood Sugar I know...im yet too see one
They don't have them (until recently) in the US and they don't really have recent car worth reviewing. And that is coming from a true Alfa owner and fan!
try the new giulia, you´l see
Antonio Alegre No doubt. But that one wasn't available yet when I said that.
Would be nice to see a tipo b monoposto (p3) on this show, absolutely fantastic car, and far superior to the bugs of that time, and there is also that fantastic nuvolari victory in the german gp.
What a sound! It would surely make you forget about every thing else, nothing but the road ahead with an amazing sound track.
Stunning!
7:25 ABOUT A WEEK AGOOO
I didn't understand...
Schlomothebest bobby smhurda's song hot nigga he says that in that rap.
Jose Francisco Medeiros k
That was totally amazing ride....Jay does a great job of bringing forward the history of the design and that this 32 Alfa changed the competition. Wow...thanks for posting this !
"it costs less than 10% of what an original would cost" thats such a salesman thing to say, i hate salesmen. even when they are given the honour to star on jays show, they still try to sell sell sell..
+colj001 How is it a problem that he brings it up?
What an amazing car. Jay Leno in his happiest state.
If the car is made in Argentina is not extravagant,
Pagani DeTomaso and Gafoglio (in USA) are the famous Argentine builders car (read wikipedia)
Amazing. If you had filmed in black/white, it could have looked similar’ish to a Tazio Nuvolari clip. Thank you for letting us be a small part of your very special event!!!
I wish my car sounds like that
In my opinion this has to be one of the coolest cars you've shared on the show! And it's soooo far from my typical taste and circle of knowledge! Thanks for uploading!
WOW.....THAT GUY HAS NO CLUE HOW TO SOLDER..... I hope someone went back over the electrical connections.... JEEZU
Its authentic to the Italian craftsmanship of the era
Oscar Brady
And of later eras.
You don't realize how difficult it is for some people to solder, I spent 7 years trying to teach Jr HS kids how to solder, some people just don't get it, that's why the electrical codes now specify a mechanical connection.
I was surprised to see that, you'd expect at least a halfassed lineman's splice/some twists for $4-500k, not that mess.
And the paintjob is awful on this particular model...
These are the best episodes. When Jay opens his presents he's like a kid on Christmas.
John could be more...”dynamic”... he sounds bored.
That straight 8 sounds so good! I would think since its a straight engine, it would sound more like a 4. It looks like it runs so good on the freeway.
The gear changes take half an hour though
Yeah. If you really know what you're doing, you might be able to do it faster
Straight cut gears and no synchromesh, thus Leno referencing "double clutching"..
Thanx for the ride.
This car was, and still is an engineering masterpiece.
It doesnt matter its a replica, because its is the real thing built recently so it can be experienced the way it should be.
Gorgeous piece of automotive history and sounds like it wants to be driven hard.
One of the Mona Lisa's
Man sells $500k cars for a living and doesn't know how to pronounce "Mille Miglia"... 😕
Unimportant. Irrelevant.
+Stefan de Wilde He knows how to pronounce, meelie, meelya. He doesn't, because it is considered bad manners to do so.
+W Goslin Since when is it bad manners to pronounce something correctly?
+Stefan de Wilde I can't help you.
+W Goslin only ignorant people may consider bad manner such a thing. Is it an American thing, with no offense meant?
As Jay says, "Wow!". Wished my 939 Spider could sound like that! Fantastic.
