    In this video I show you how to paint a sunset in a seascape painting that was inspired by the coast of Wellington in New Zealand.
    This painting was a nightmare to create as I ran into problems with it after I'd blocked it in. I very nearly gave up on it but I made some changes, persevered with it and in the end I was happy with the result.
    Throughout the video I give you tips on painting fiery sunsets, complimentary colours and general tips on painting seascapes.

    This painting is taking shape near the end. At times the relationship between darks and light seemed a bit off but with a lot of tweaking it worked out quite well. Not a easy thing to paint, awesome job Samuel!

    Think you did a great job , and improved the whole scene the more you persevered. I like the warm colours you added to the clouds and the wave became more breathtaking as you continued. I totally understand how we get fed up after working on a painting for 30 hours, I am usually bored by my painting at that time. I appreciate all the information you pass on as you teach. I love seeing your lessons as soon as I receive notice. Thank you for sharing your hard earned knowledge. Zina from Canada.

    This might sound odd, but it's good to see you have issues Sometimes with your painting that I'm not alone. Sometimes going back-and-forth with Issues in the painting can you give it more depth And not be cliche.

      Thanks. This is a great suggestion. Whilst I don't live in the tropics I do live in the far north of New Zealand and the climate has a strong subtropical influence. There are lots of palm trees growing up here so I'll get out with my camera and see what I can create 😊

    Ssmuel Вы перестали писать на тонированных холстах. Это влияло на тональность, или через время цвет работ менялся? Меня очень удивило, что и пленеры вы писали тоже на таких холстах. Было очень занимательно видеть как на коричневом холсте появлялся цвет. Удачной работы! Молодость дана для поиска! Дерзайте!

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  2 года назад

      Привет, Вера, ты права, я перестал рисовать на тонированном холсте. Мне нравится эффект, который вы получаете на холсте, тонированном жженой сиеной или жженой умброй, но я обнаружил, что значения в моих картинах часто получаются слишком темными, и мне придется корректировать значение позже в картине. С тех пор, как я вернулся к рисованию на белой поверхности, мне стало намного легче устанавливать свои значения, и мои цвета выглядят чище. Спасибо за просмотр

    Sam I have a question about the canvas. So I have read, and been told by other artists that I should paint my canvas with a warm color before I actually paint my picture on the canvas. Is this just a personal preference? Or does help in plein air painting?
    Thank you!

    • @SamuelEarpArtist
      @SamuelEarpArtist  Год назад

      This is a great question. Firstly you don't have to tone the canvas with a warm colour at all, you should do what works for you. Many artists tone their canvas with a layer of burnt sienna or burnt umber as it warms up the painting as the underpainting comes through the paint layer. It can also give your painting a more traditional look, however it is not essential. I toned my canvas with burnt sienna for many years but I found that my dark values would often come out too dark and I would have to readjust the values. More recently I have returned to painting on a white surface as I find it easier to get my values correct and I have found that my colours look cleaner. It is a matter of preference, try both, painting on a tones surface and painting on a white surface and see which yor prefer. I hope this helps 😀

    I've been along time subscriber and watch you videos over and over..
    I don't comment,however I felt a need to say this, the seascape and sky is wonderful, however the two rocks on left side are a distraction...
    I have a condition that's called pareidolia...its neat having at times and at others no so..
    The two rocks have an appearance if faces within, also the rock behind doesn't appear to "sit in" it appears to be floating...at times I've seen many painters when their at the easel and when forming rocks, clouds, mountains, even I've seen trees...they don't stand back and thus don't see these shapes within..I'm curious if many others can see this...I watch this other painter on RUclips for almost 10 yrs now, he's popular, but every painting he has trees, rocks and so on with faces within, I never see anyone commenting pointing out what too me is very obvious, so yeah I don't know if others can see it, or if the painter/s can see them as well. He has at least 500 videos posted, I've watched all, and read comments more than once...And only have seen about 4 comments from different viewers pointing out or asking if anyone else could see the faces and such.
    The two rocks here just need some tweaking on...just thought I'd give my 2 cents.
    Beautiful work, love your works, channel and website...thank you Sam for all that you share...have learned much throughout the yrs as I only write the ocean...water subjects....
    Also, another thought, I don't know the size of canvas your using (inches) perhaps the size of wave itself along with those two left side rocks might be a tad too big for the canvas and that's what's been throwing you off with this painting....if it's a 9/12 inch canvas the sizes are too big, they'd fit a 18/24 inch canvas. Just 2cents here....

    The relationship between the colors in the sky and the colors in the water bother me, not the value, or chroma, but the hue?
