  • Hegel, Spinoza: a problem of becoming?
A common place for approaching the constellation Hegel-Spinoza is to determine it as a problem of negativity. What if negativity captures only its exoteric dimension, to be supplemented with an esoteric dimension which raises a problem of becoming? The paper stakes out, with Jacobi's Letters…, the historical preconditions for Hegel's appropriation of Spinoza in terms of becoming. Furthermore, it sketches out the structure of becoming, redoubling itself into becoming and positing, which underlies the objective part of Hegel's Logic. This structure allows to approach the transition from objective to subjective logic, and especially the “refutation of Spinozism” which must remain incomprehensible as a problem of negativity alone, as one of becoming. That therein resides the inner core of the constellation Hegel-Spinoza is confirmed by the absence, within the logic of the Encyclopedia, both of an account of the structural redoubling of becoming in positing and of a refutation of Spinozism. Hence, Hegel’s proper dispute with Spinozism is to be found in the greater Logic, as a problem of becoming, which needs to complement the exoteric story of negativity, which Hegel himself tells us on several occasions.

A great lecture. Hegel is extremely important, and the neglect of him is unacceptable.
