And as a HUGE kaiju-eiga and Tokusatsu nerd, I wish we had that in the movie, BUT Tsubaraya was still in court with a lunatic from Thailand for their international distribution rights so it couldn't be worked out. So Gundam was used instead.

That's what has put me off from both reading the book and seeing the film; I genuinely almost bought the book before the movie came out because I'd heard it was really popular and dystopian sci-fi is my jam, but I read reviews of it and they were very mixed; all the negative reviews went into great depth about how the story and characters were really weak and it just relied on "weaponised nostalgia" for the 80s for its appeal. For comparison most of the positive reviews of the book could be summed up as "I liked it because it reminded me of the 80s". Obviously having not read the book myself it could turn out to be something I really like, but until I hear a really persuasive counter-argument to those negative reviews, I am in no hurry to read it.
