My daughter lived on Key West and rather than inconvenience her roommates I got a hotel when I visited. The first time I stayed, as I approached I heard someone saying, “Hello, how are you?” I couldn’t see anyone but heard it again. I love conch. While we were stationed in Clearwater Florida, every 4 to 6 weeks my husband would deploy to the either the Bahamas or Puerto Rico for 2 weeks at a time. They worked 24 on 24 off on the deployments so, he took up Spear and shell fishing during his off time. We were overflowing with Spiney (rock) Lobster and conch for the 2 years we lived there. He tricked me with the conch though. The idea of it just grossed me out so I wouldn't even try it. One day he brought some home that he'd cooked at a buddies house, that was breaded and deep-fried, I had no idea what it actually was and ended up loving it.

If in uniform, protocol is to stand at parade rest. If not wearing a uniform or a civilian, protocol is to stop and face the flag or music only", Taps is usually played at 9:00pm... Taps, sounded at 2100 hours (9 p.m.), Taps is the final call of the day, and indicates lights out and marks “quiet time” on the base. Fun fact: the best key lime pie isn't made with key limes. I'm not kidding. I made it several times trying to figure out how to make it so I like it, but it always had this awful metallic taste (even when the custard was made in a glass double boiler with non-metal utensils and measurers). So I tried making it with just regular limes. Phenomenal. Best key lime pie I've ever had. Made it many more times and everyone always says it's so amazing (even if they don't know i made it). The only thing key limes are good for is corona. 🤣🤣

Henry Flager built a series of bridges in 1912 from Miami to Key West. They were train bridges and the trains ran until 1935 when it was hit by a hurricane 80 miles north of Key West killing over 800 passengers. The train had gone bankraupt because of the depression. The US government took over the train right of way and built a highway in 1939. The islands are connected by 42 bridges. The road was a very narrow two lane road. In 1984, the state of Florida widened the road, since the old road was dangerous they cut out sections. You can walk and fish on the old bridges but you can not drive on the old bridges

He also liked to swing completely around his perch, sing Happy Birthday, and no one was allowed to laugh louder than him or he'd just laugh louder and louder until he was the loudest. He was pretty awesome. He even danced better than I do and he liked to call for the cat "here kitty, kitty, kitty" even though I didn't have a cat. Yep, Tarpon are a very powerful game fish that can grow to a length of eight feet and weigh up to 300 pounds. They are considered to be very challenging because they are so powerful, and you need to be careful as they can be dangerous when they thrash around being landed or released from a boat, sometimes injuring the fisherman and damaging equipment.

There was an era in the US when the highways were dotted by giant weird sculptures to attract drivers to their road side businesses. Sometimes the entire building was sculpture. If you sold oranges the building was a giant orange. Maybe the building was a giant Goose. The giant lobster is a nod to that probably.

Key lime pie is huge in Florida, but you can find it throughout most of the states. Key lime pie is made from key limes...from the smaller type of limes grown in the Keys. The keys are islands, but they are part of Florida like key West, Florida and key largo, Florida. Key West is the most southern part of the US.

Key Limes are grown in Florida. The term "key" is an old Spanish term for island, so Key Limes are limes that grow in the heat of Florida, that were originally grown on the keys. They are slightly tart, in a good way. The Florida Keys are connected by a series of bridges about 113 miles long (caller "the Overseas Highway") connecting over 30 islands.

The old bridge was crumbling away because when they mixed the cement, they used sea water. So, it was replaced in the 1980s. Big sections of the old bridge are still there, and sections are missing now. Henry Flagler envisioned connecting Key West to the mainland.

Swam with dolphins, hit the beaches, great food by 7mile bridge,...

About reacting to that bird at 5:20, I'm 34 and my grandma passed quite awhile ago, but she had a white parrot basically her whole life. I believe it got smarter while I was a teenager and I spent more time with her and getting the bird occasionally a little bit of a second hand buzz. It would enjoy TV more and started to speak more and more... The bird actually outlived her and was donated to the alzheimers ward where she spent the last year of her life or so. It lived on for 6 more years to the age of 78 years old if my memory serves correctly.

I live in Miami and once a year I join a group of volunteers and we KAYAK from Miami to Key West to raise $ for cancer research. It takes a few days to do the expedition, and one of the most nerve racking parts of it is to cross the 7 Mile Bridge as the currents and the waves can make it quite challenging not to capsize. Robbie's is one of our favorite stops during the trip as they have an amazing breakfast! When you are paddling 8-10 hours per day, a good breakfast is awesome! Landing at Key West is always a bittersweet experience as the trip during the heat of June can be grueling, but the camaraderie is real, and it's for a great cause. The ocean after Key Largo is absolutely gorgeous, way more beautiful than in Miami!

Graham Cracker Crumble (10:59). To make a key lime pie, you bake it in a graham cracker crust. Graham crackers are also a staple for s'mores - toast your marshmallow over the fire, put one chunk of chocolate on one cracker, leave the other plain, and grab the marshmallow off the stick. You'll end up with a cracker sandwich of chocolate and marshmallow. They have a distinctive taste, like the difference between water crackers and biscoff. They're closer to biscoff.
