The Florida Keys are a chain of islands that stretch south of Miami towards Cuba. Key West is the last island, about halfway between Miami and Cuba.
The Overseas Highway connects the islands. Some form of this highway has existed since 1928. It was mainly railroad back then.
Key Largo is the largest island in the chain. Humphrey Bogart made a movie called Key Largo where they were trapped there during a hurricane, among other things.

Answering a few of your Brit questions - The Keys are not islands with beaches, they are the remnants of Coral Reefs from the Ice Age - generally, the ground is made of crushed coral not beach sand. The average water depth of the blue/green is about 5-7 feet for 1000s of feet out. It's so clean because the local pants on the keys drink and purify it. There are 3-4 keys that were man made after Wealthy people had the ocean floor dredged down 40 feet to allow their yachts to dock at their homes. Currently, there are over 1700 named keys, but some estimates suggest that there may be as many as 2000 or more unnamed keys in addition to those that have been named. There are 42 bridges from the mainland (Florida) to the end of the Keys. Key West, the southern most key can reach temps of 100+ degrees, drinking a bottle of water per hour is normal. The Smathers beach is man made from sand brought over from the Bahama Islands. There are sharks, mostly harmless. It's the giant sea turtles that you can bump into on a Jet Ski and injure. They have hospitals dedicated to saving them as a result. Duval Street is basically, drink everywhere until you cannot stand up anymore. Finally, the marker in the beginning of the video is 90 nautical miles from Cuba... in the 70's we almost entered into a nuclear war (within hours of) with Cuba when Russia was hanging out in our USA backyard.

In case you didn't see the marker behind them at the beginning of the video, Key West, Florida, is the southernmost point of the continental United States. In fact, it's only 90 miles from that point to Cuba.
My family went on a cruise to Key West and the Bahamas back in February of 2018, and the temperature was 28.3 degrees C there in the winter while it was closer to 10 degrees C back home in South Carolina. Key West is like a small town tourist trap, but fun.
Just FYSA, I have found that most islands in the Caribbean have chickens just roaming around freely. Also, the white theme of the buildings and houses is done not for looks, but for comfort. Here in The South, it gets really hot in the summer, especially in South Florida and the Caribbean. White reflects heat whereas darker colors absorb it. This is the same reason that cruise ships are often painted white - to reduce heat. Additionally, if you ever travel to Florida, if you were wise you would pack lots of light-colored clothes. 😄
Yes, Florida definitely gets tornados, especially when there are hurricanes, but it can also get them from regular thunderstorms, too. Florida is also known as the lightning capital of the world.

Key West, a U.S. island city, is part of the Florida Keys archipelago. It's also Florida's southernmost point, lying roughly 90 miles north of Cuba. Famed for its pastel-hued, conch-style houses, it’s a cruise-ship stop also accessible from the mainland via the Overseas Highway. It’s known more for its coral reefs - destinations for diving and snorkeling - than for its beaches.
They said it better than me.

We usually stay in Marathon Key, which is about half the distance from Key Largo and Key West. We love the great beaches especially Sombrero Beach, the great seafood, the Turtle Rescue Center and Dolphin Research Center. I always take the time to spend a day in Key West but the parking is horrendous and when the giant cruise ships disembark it's wall-to-wall tourists. So many great restaurants along the keys route that you can eat your way to heaven and gain way too much weight....but it's worth it!

People get tempted by the great snorkeling and empty beach then get ambushed. You could probably get away with snorkeling and fishing during the day if you don't actually make landfall but they will raid nearby boats at night.
The island is in a sort of legal black hole where nobody has jurisdiction so no policing of the pirates unless someone gets shanked or hijacked. Classic Key West. lol Avoid the island and you'll be fine though, the pirate know full well their legal protections and won't risk it by messing around where the police and sheriff have authority.

Any bar that has a sign on an oak tree that says "Ernest Hemingway pissed on this tree" is my type of place. Next time be sure to check out Sloppy Joe's Bar.

I would look up the Florida Keys. I lived in the Keys for five years, 25 miles from Key West. There are a couple of small beaches and one at Fort Zachary. I haven't lived there for almost seven years, but i know that if you are there on your birthday, you can show your ID and you can do some things at places for free. You need to explore all of the Keys. These islands are over 100 miles from one end to the other.

I'm a Floridian and the Keys are one of my favorite places to visit. There is a lot of history and they have a pirate museum, a ghost tour, and a really old fort. We do get seasonal hurricanes and the occasional tornado, but the tornados tend to be on the weaker side compared to Tornado Alley.

Key lines are a small line with a milder tart but sweet juice. Pies, Marinades for Any & All meats, fudge, taffy, ice cream, & mixed drinks-anywhere you’d think of using a lime OR Lemon-Key Limes do it better!!! We had a tree in our yard in Marathon(Florida Keys!), & my daughters used to grab them & eat them, skin & all!!!🥰

    Off the Florida Keys
    There's a place called Kokomo
    That's where you wanna go
To get away from it all .....
    Beach Boys song "kokomo"
The Keys are Island paradises according to the song, I don't doubt it they never were cheap to visit as I understand but they sound amazing.
And to answer your question about Key Lime Pie it originates from the Keys the actual lime used is the Key Lime grown there and the key lime pies when done right are absolutely delicious, I'm not a huge Pie fan but when there is Key Lime Pie I can't ever resit.

Just a bit more context. “The Key’s” were our weekend get away while growing up and living my life in South Miami. The Keys are responsible for hundreds of my hangovers throughout my life. It’s the vibe man! The Florida Keys are a string of tropical islands stretching about 120 miles off the southern tip of the U.S. state of Florida, between the Atlantic Ocean and Gulf of Mexico. They’re known as a destination for fishing, boating, snorkeling and scuba diving. The southernmost city of Key West is famous for Duval Street’s many bars, Mallory Square’s nightly Sunset Celebration and the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum.

A friend in Church, many years ago, took my mother and I for a ride in his 4 seater. He was a very experienced pilot so I had no qualms. But weather, pilot error and scanty maintenance can be big risk factors for small planes. Especially in foreign countries. At the end of the day a lot of things are out of our hands, anyway. But yes, small private/corporate/commercial craft are more risky, statistically speaking, than large commercial craft.✈️

Ernest Hemingway had a Spanish style home in central Key West surrounded with mature trees and heavy foliage, and the place was overrun with 6-toed cats. The house is now a museum and a national treasure, and still overrun with the descendants of Ernest's cats that still have the genetic anomaly of 6-toes. When not writing, Hemingway would wonder over to his favorite bar called Sloppy Joe's and drink the night away. Hemingway made Sloppy Joe's famous, and it still has the same look as in Ernest's time. A popular tourist destination.

I lived in South Florida from 59 to 88. The Florida Keys were empty and wide open
I loved going there all the time with my friends in high school.Late 60s, early 70s. Talk about fun. I moved away because Fl was getting way too crowded. Wonderful memories, though.

I went to Key West a few years ago highly recommend!! Yes Lewis the Chickens and Roosters have free run of the island and it is against the law to harm them. So while you’re eating you may have a chicken or 2 at your feet. Mallory Square has a sunset festival every night where you can go sit and enjoy the beautiful sunset shop with street vendors and watch live performers. Amazing food, museums, shops, nightlife literally something for everyone. Also they have a glass bottom boat tour that takes you out over the coral reef 🪸 🐡 🐟 🐠 absolutely amazing!!

It's a small island, and most people live on their boats and bike or use a moped or scooter to get around. The streets are small also. There is downtown wish is like being at New Orleans with a lot of nightlife, and omg, the bars are awesome. So much more to see if you walk around and find the parrot sanctuary and let's not forget are famous book wrightor Ernest Hemingway. You can even get a tour of the estate. There are also live street performers downtown, and some are so amazing. One of the most beautiful places in Florida. Must see. I live here in Florida and go at least once a year to one of the keys. Go and enjoy

I flew in a small plane from Las Vegas to Bar 10 Ranch which is a working ranch in Utah located on the top of the Grand Canyon. Spent the night at the ranch. Next morning took a helicopter to the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon, our starting point for a 7 day white water rafting trip down the Colorado. Dream of a lifetime, all of it.

Lewis- about 20 years ago, my friend talked me into a trip to Key West. I had visions of roughing it in the wilderness. I even brought my own toilet paper! Imagine my surprise when we finally arrived and the first thing I saw was a MALL! LOL.
Then I refused to leave without some key lime pie!
