Floridian, just spent 1st vacation there at Marathon. People are ignorant. They aren't islands, they are smaller, the seaweed stinks *so does the everglades which I live near*. Everything has to be brought in. Maybe these two should have done basic reading.

That stink they refer to is super common around any ocean. It's the dead sea grass that washes up on shore and begins to decompose.

Thoroughly enjoyed your take on the Florida Keys. I have been once I went on a cruise then my friend and I rented a car and had planned to go to Everglades national Park. We got off the cruise it was pouring so we skipped the Everglades. The rain stopped once we got to the . We stayed in a hotel for a few days. I will be returning in the future when I have my van. I do have seasonal allergies and I did not have a problem there before. I always carry allergy medication with me when I travel. I’m glad you called out the rude drivers!!! Thank you.

The smell occurs naturally when the tide goes down in areas where there are mangroves.

You bet! Thank you for watching our video, since this video we haven't gone back to the Keys many times and had a great time.
The smell... the Keys are a string of small islands with the Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf of Mexico on the other side. Sargassum is a type of algae/seaweed that is vital to the marine ecology. Unfortunately, like everything else it blooms and dies. In the Keys it is carried in by the currents and ends up on the beaches, mangroves, and rocks especially in June and July. The smell can be brutal but it is one of those awful smells that the people just get used to. It can be overpowering for tourists. They do clean up the beaches nightly during this time, and I have even seen them out there with snow plow type vehicles working to get rid of it. (The good news is that some have come up with a way to recycle and incorporate it into building materials.) This year, 2023, the greatest sargassum die-off ever is out there in the Atlantic, covering an approximately 5,000 square mile area. And now it's washing up on Florida beaches, so before going down to the Keys you might want to check that part out. It's about 110 miles from Key Largo to Key West, so the best way to do the drive is to take it easy, take in the sights, and plan on a couple of hours to get there. My go to app for traffic timing and getting around is definitely Waze.

That’s fantastic! Our home base is in Central Florida, we are now “most time RVers” since we bought our home base, but we have our daughter live there as we are gone most of the year. We come back to visit our daughter for the holidays 💝

We just went down to Key Largo. We took a trip down from West Palm Beach. Got a hotel room in Key Largo. We just wanted to see the sandy beaches and enjoy the sunsets. The song starts with the best of if not the best, there's no sandy beaches? There is no sandy beaches in the keys. We talked with a park official, that just closed. The keys are built on ancient Coral Rock. There is no sandy beaches. Nobody wants to discuss that. I think this is something that needs to be brought up. On one of the so-called sandy beaches that are advertised. I literally walked out. And looked back at my friend. And said. Be careful. This is sharp! I cannot believe on the deceptiveness of this. That the keys are able to advertise themselves. With sandy beaches. There is not a Sandy Beach over there. And if it is as fan-made. Maybe you have some Island that has sand on it. For the ninety-eight percent of the keys. There's no sandy beaches.
You might as well prepare for a trip to the emergency room. You'll steal the lacerations on your feet from this ancient Coral Rock. It's going to hurt.
You throw some kids into that mixture.
It's not going to be a good day.

The Upper Keys are very different from the lower Keys. There are several beaches in the keys. Key West has Smathers, Higgs, and Ft Zack and a couple other small beaches hidden around the island like Simonton, or Dog beach.. Bahia Honda near marathon is amazing. One of the even more fun things to do is, take a boat excursion out to "The Sand Bar" or Marvin Key.

What months would you say are better to visit? TY from Colorado.
We went this past month for 3 weeks and the weather was amazing! This time we were on top of our allergy medicine, we both get seasonal/pollen allergy symptoms.
Good tip about the allergies! Ive lived in Fla for 12 yrs, it is the palm trees. They flower over the winter and man, do they wreck havoc on tourists! Its different from other allergens so it bothers just about everyone, even ppl without seasonal allergies in their home state.

I missed what month you visited or recorded this video? Reading the comments the stench came from the seaweed. Our family from Idaho will be there Thanksgiving week. Was it the time of year that you visited that the stench and allergies were the worst or they're an issue all year long?

We recommend checking the weather & looking at groups that tent camp, or calling the camp ground’s, they would have a great answer to that question. We love going to Key West, safe travels.

Most of the stench is the seaweed that the city ordinances say can’t be cleaned up
Hey Nathan, I figured it was low tide, glad to hear what it actually was. Thanks for watching our video and supporting our channel.
The entire Caribbean basin, south Florida and the Keys are plagued with huge seaweed mats that wash ashore and rot. The tiny animals that live in the seaweed die when beached and create the “dead” smell. It is not true that city ordinances prohibit the cleanup of seaweed. That is totally false. Key West and the other island municipalities spend a fortune cleaning it up from the beaches. The seaweed mats are a relatively new problem, and are a result of climate change (warming oceans) and pollution (most probably from untreated sewage in South America, primarily Brazil). The currents bring the nutrients that result in the explosive growth of the seaweed via the Gulf Stream as it travels by the Keys and creates the problem.

Never had allergy problem ! Stink is sea weed and it is fowl. No one knows that there are no beaches. Yeah its windy most of the time !

I definitely checked off a bucket list item when I touched the Christ of the abyss. Key West you got it figured out food music oh, and hopefully the French cat show guy is still around. My wife loves the butterfly garden.

Where did you drive from that made it 9hours?
Northern Florida*, when you’re towing a 40’ 5th wheel behind you, you don’t drive fast. We were also driving through a storm on the way down, which made everyone drive slower. Once the sun sets the speed on Key West goes down 10 MPH then what’s posted. Plus stopped a couple times for fuel & etc.. it’s a beautiful drive. Oh & on Key West when you’re on the bridge it’s a one lane each way road.

lol guys this can happen anywhere you go… I’m not being rude or anything, but it may be best for you to stay under your rock next time. I have been to the keys hundreds of times. Never had wins that would blow my car and/or truck over… You obviously have not been to the beach much because that smell is completely normal… and any small area that has a moped population… There are crashes… good luck Lol
Thank you for taking the time to watch our first time in the Keys, we stayed in Key West. This was more of our first time experience in the Keys and this video is well over 2 years old. So we shared what we experienced since not everyone has been to the Keys. We've been back to the Keys several times since this video was published (over 2 years ago) and it is one of our favorite places, the other favorite place is Alaska. We stay at Sigsbee, the Navy base in our RV. We travel all over the US and internationally. When we were talking about vehicles being blown over we talking more about RV's, 5th wheels, etc.... things you tow that are tall as our 5th wheel is over 13' tall, an RV owner you would know this, if their RV is tall and long, it's a safety precaution, not saying to stay away. We have other Keys videos of the different adventures we went on, including flying into Dry Tortugas in a seaplane, that was a blast. Thats pretty much Fl every where , I live not far from Sarasota , and have been here 10 yrs , I would never recommend anyone to move here . Its not what you think.

Your tips are not specific to the Florida Keys. Your tips are pretty much common sense things. The smell? Really? Have you ever been to a seashore where there is drying seaweed? Try going up to New England. The Keys are the keys and are as they are. Enjoy them

Please please please adjust volume/audio on videos when you are just talking, we have the TV turned up all the way and it's like you guys are mumbling. If I am cooking or there's noise, then we can't even watch your channel at all.
