He is talking about someone like a record producer who is trying to make him sell out. He is telling the story of a farm boy, just a story, who would rather go back to plowing and the howling of owls in the woods, back to the horny back toad....it is just metaphors....written by Bernie Taupin, it is simple a story about a guy who decided selling out was not for him. Elton John is/way a fine artist, but i always had a problem with some of his vocals on his earlier songs. A prime example would have to be 'Tiny Dancer.' As good as that song is, why did he feel the need to sing in a ridiculous American accent? The way he stretches his vowels to sound like a yank always bothered me, when the guy was from Pinner. He could only of had the green stuff on his mind, and personally, i feel that lacks a certain integrity!

Bernie grew up on a farm in England from a very poor family where he indicated that even in the 60’s their farm wasn’t wired for electricity. Once Elton/Bernie made it HUGE, and dealing with all the drugs and alcohol involved and anger issues, Bernie wanted out of that business arrangement and wanted to to a quieter life, hence, I wanna go back to my plough,

How much better, can anyone make a song? As solo singers go, he is on the very top the tree. I first saw him, in 1971, I was 9 then, he was 24, a youngster with thick blond hair. Talent beyond talent.

This was the first record I ever bought - could have been 47 years to the day because I bought it with birthday money (birthday on August 23rd). I can't believe that I'm really that old - was 10 at the time - or that this record still stands up so well almost 1/2 a century later.

I'm glad you listened to this! Elton John was HUGE in the 70s, and I think the best introduction to his work is Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.
Lots of hits after this, like Philadelphia Freedom, Daniel, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, Bennie and the Jets, and so on. I think the 70s was his best period.

This is the first Elton album I purchased way back in the early 70's, loved it, also on this album is candle in the wind written originally about Marilyn Monroe and re written in 97 as a tribute to princess Diana, it was released as a chatity single and remains the second biggest selling single of all time. You should check out the original version, also someone saved my life tonight from his captain fantastic album my favourite Elton song. I love seeing your reaction to songs I have grown up with it's a bit strange really because these artists are mega star's to people of my generation and you just assume everybody knows who they are and what great songs they've recorded.

Great Elton John classic! Also, "Yellow Brick Road is the name of the best cover band in Las Vegas for the past 20 something years. They originally started out as an Elton John cover band but went on to do classic rock fro groups like The Knack, Pink Floyd, Journey, Aerosmith, Ozzy Ozbourne, Lynard Skynard and much more! They are still going strong (aside from the Covid19 break) with a new lead singer. Their original lead singer Brody Dolyniuk was and STILL is the producer of the band. I got to see him make a comeback performance with the band this past New Year's Eve. It was awesome!!

One of the great rock albums ever made. What you should remember about Elton John songs is that he writes the music while his songwriting partner Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics so you really can't take the songs as autobiographical. This song is about a singer refusing to sell out and going back to the simple life on the farm. Elton John never had any desires to live a simple life on a farm!

I laughed a little when you said Elton John must be popular! Over the years he’s had 9 number one chart topping hits along with a hundred others falling shy of that goal. He’s sold so many records he is a billionaire! Yeah. I’d say he is popular. So popular in fact that Queen Elizabeth II knighted him. He is now Sir Elton John. 🥰🥰🥰😉😉😉

The writer Benny Taupin was raised on a farm in England and the big rich life was overwhelming and too different to handle for his humble upbringing..The Yellow Brick Road is a reference to Wizard of Oz and being in Kansas on a farm .The yellow brick road is the fantasy world that he did not want anymore .
