Elton did come up with the B-B-B-Bennie. Actually Bernie has said that he hates he didn’t came up with the coolest part of the song. Supposedly the song is a satire to the music industry and how it wanted to change the image and electronic sounds over the art of it
This is not live. It’s a studio trick they employed to simulate a live Benny and the Jets concert feel for the song. This whole album is an audiophiles dream.

That's one of my least favorite Elton John songs -- that and a few from the '80s -- always got on my nerves. But besides that one, I like pretty much everything he did in the '70s.
Saw Elton John in the 70s and he started his concert with this unbelievable song… It was a concert to go down in the ages! And Benny and the Jets got that crowd so wound up, 15,000 people never sat down through the whole thing
Yeah I saw him in central park for free with lots and lots of people, he wore his duck outfit and played don't let the sun go on me as the sun was going down, it was a great concert!
I love Elton John's music! Got to see him in concert a few years ago and had seats facing him and that grand piano. I bowed to him during the ovation and he bowed right back at me. Made my day!
So COOL! Love that image! 💜 I had similar moments with Barry Manilow, Willie Nelson, and David Bowie. Now that I think about it, how fortunate was I???
Thoughts: As previously stated, this was a studio recording made to sound like a live show. Gus Dudgeon, the producer who was responsible for producing all of Elton's recordings from 1970-76 and 1985-86, heard Elton play that chord at the beginning as a count-in for the band. He thought it sounded like something someone would do at a live show, so he added in some applause and hand-claps from a 1972 Elton concert and a Jimi Hendrix concert, plus some extra whoops and whistles from the studio tea-boy, and then added a load of reverb and delay to make it sound like it was recorded in a concert hall. Elton didn't initially think much of this song, and has never seen it as a hit. In early 1974, when the third single from the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album was due to come out, Elton wanted "Candle in the Wind" released in the US and Canada as it had been the third single in the rest of the world. However, his North American record company, MCA, wanted to put out "Bennie and the Jets". Elton fought them tooth-and-nail on it, until finally they told him (truthfully), that it was the #1 R&B record on Detroit radio. Being a huge R&B fan himself, Elton was floored by this news, and gave the go-ahead to release it. The song became his second US #1 single, and got him an invitation to perform on Soul Train (a first for a white artist). There's barely been a tour since 1974 where Elton hasn't played this song. He often extends it to 10 minutes or more, performing an extended solo during the second half, complete with some incredible piano acrobatics. I strongly suggest checking out his 1984 performance of this song at Wembley Stadium. That instrument you were hearing at the end is a Farfisfa organ. It was performed by Elton on the record, though in concert, that part is played either by guitarist Davey Johnstone (on electric guitar instead of organ) or by whatever keyboardist he has with him. Elton used Farfisfa organ on a number of his recordings around this time, most notably on "Crocodile Rock".
Great post and absolutely true (I'm an Elton fan). Everyone I used to hang with on the southside of Chi was into this cut. Black radio fell in love with him just like we did and played his music. Specifically when 'The B**ch Is Back' was released - white radio wouldn't touch it, but we were into it big time. There are many instances of black radio playing music by white artists that white radio would not play for one reason or another, mostly censorship.
There's a clip somewhere of him doing this song on the popular music show "Soul Train". It was a great performance. He also did "Philadelphia Freedom" on that episode.

Hey Jay you said " How many great songs does this man have?" I say to you Bro that since 1974 when I first heard Crocodile Rock, I'm not sure I've heard a one that isnt great!!🤣
Hearing the remastered version reminds me of what me and my friends THOUGHT the lyrics were when we were kids: "She's got electric boots" we thought was "She's got electric boobs..."
He is definitely up there for sure, definitely a master, but I honestly think Billy Joel is the best piano play in modern music history, you should see some of his songs like Root Beer Rag, Angry Young Man and New York State of Mind

Oh yes, this one is in a movie from my youth, My Girl 2. Great, thanks. Elton John's "Candle in the wind" during princess Diana's funeral is the one I really love the most.
When this song first came out I was young enough for the line " where we fight our parents out in the streets to find who's right and who's wrong" to be a distinct possibility. This is still one of my favorite albums.
For those that will get to see Sir Elton John this year on his final tour, how I envy you. You will have such a blast because this man was born to perform and it will be a spectacular show from start to finish. I've seen Elton 3 times now. I was trying to get tickets for New York ~ I want to treat my daughter as her NYU Masters graduation gift ~ but having trouble snagging the close seats without the huge costs He will not disappoint. I was in the 7 or 8th grade and remember singing this on the school bus!!! "She's got electric boots! A mohair suit you know I read it in a magazine ohh!!!!🎶 BBBBenny and the jets🎶🎶" Great selection and awesome reaction!!!
From google: " "Bennie" is a female character who Elton has described as a "sci-fi rock goddess." Bernie Taupin, who wrote the lyrics, told Esquire, "'Bennie And The Jets' was almost Orwellian - it was supposed to be futuristic. They were supposed to be a prototypical female rock 'n' roll band out of science fiction. Automatons."
I remember hearing this song for the first time when I bought the album, it's a tune that grabs you and doesn't let go! Sure l read it topped the R&B chart at the time!
Always great watching you discover and enjoy the music that was back then, it was a great era(?) for music, fun watching you hear it for the first time. And Elton John was/is sooo talented. Bernie Taupin, too. Great reaction, as always!
Bernie Taupin writes the lyrics. Sends them to Elton. Then Elton puts the words to music. Bernie has never complained or suggested musical modifications and Elton has never rewritten the lyrics.
I still think your next Elton song should be either "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" and "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", but "Crocodile Rock" is good too. Elton has so many good songs that it takes time to get to all of them.
Not many were born with his kind of talent. It’s just so extraordinary and I wish I wasn’t so used to it after all these years. Dang, he was/is so, so good. ❤️
This was Elton's biggest R&B hit. He even performed it on Soul Train. I turned my R&B only family to Elton when this song came out. They still love him!
About 15 years ago, I was the Switchboard Operator in a 4◇ Hotel when Elton came to town. My position required me to give wake up calls to an incredible array of famous people. One was Davey Johnston, EJs long serving guitarist. I wished him well for the Sold-Out show later that night. He asked if I were going, and I said I had tried but failed to secure a very Hot Ticket. Later that morning, he came down in person to the front desk and gifted me a ticket on the floor, just off-center 6th row! I of course had the time of my life, and will especially fondly recall dancing to BENNY & THE JETS. I felt like I was 2 feet off the ground the whole time. I was quite uninhibited to express my feelings through dance with many eyes on me. I stood out because I was standing up in a silver-Haired sit-down crowd of his aging fans. It was magical! Elton Played, I danced, and it felt like he was doing that song especially for me! That is what makes ELTON☆JOHN the SUPERSTAR that he is. All the greats can make YOU feel like they are doing JUST for YOU! (Robert Plant of Led Zep has talked about how he tried to look into EVERY set of eyes that he could see in the audience to establish that personal connection with every fan)
This has always been one of my favorite Elton songs, there are sooo many great songs to choose from with him you simply cannot go wrong with any of his music...♡
As one of those recommending this song (amongst other Elton songs) I'm so happy you finally got around to reacting to it. I just listened twice as I love this song so much. I never realised this was not a live recording, and always wanted to be the one who does the loud whistle ! Sort of genius to do it as if it was a live recording, but then that's Elton all over. One of my favourite reactions J
You know I love Elton John. I still sing his songs with the words we all had to make up before we could look up lyrics. I will put in this request again, I have to. Someone Saved My Life Tonight- Sir Elton.
My brother bought this double album when I was in high school, back in the mid seventies. I used to listen to it quite a bit. There are a lot of really great songs on it.
Elton comes in, he ALWAYS delivers. I saw him in concert in the 80s...the BEST concert I have EVER been to! He is truly the only living king of Rock/Pop.
The song tells of "Bennie and the Jets", a fictional band of whom the song's narrator is a fan. In interviews, Taupin has said that the song's lyrics are a satire on the music industry of the 1970s. The greed and glitz of the early 1970s music scene is portrayed by Taupin's words: "We'll kill the fatted calf tonight, so stick around, you're gonna hear electric music, solid walls of sound." Taupin also goes on to describe the flashy wardrobe of "Bennie", the leader of the band: "She's got electric boots, a mohair suit, You know I read it in a magazine Ohh..." Produced by Gus Dudgeon, the song was recorded during the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road sessions in France at Château d'Hérouville's Strawberry Studios, where John and Taupin had recorded their previous two albums, Honky Château and Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player. The song contains the line "She's got electric boots, a mohair suit", which is often misheard as "She's got electric boobs, and mohair shoes". A scene in the film 27 Dresses shows that this is but one of many mondegreens that listeners have invented for this song.
Been waiting for this ever since the first elton john reaction. You should check out someone saved my life tonight, levon, and crocodile rock. three greats.
I love love love this song! I worked with kids from the projects, in hospitals, shelter centers for 40 years and all of my kids knew this song and Tie a Yellow Ribbon ‘Round the Old OakTree! (Also my ex husband and and I took each of my younger sisters to his concerts - he was wearing his big fancy sunglasses then. I’m 75 years old now!
This is one of my faves! Back in the day I worked with a kid named Benny, whenever I was looking for him, I'd sing the high part.. 🎤🎶"Benny! Benny! Benny! Benny and the Je-e-et-sssss"🎶
Good grief... I was in 8th grade! LOL. Elton John set British pop music in motion, post Beatles. Sad to see him retired because I love that he is happy and healthy with his husband and children. Cheers Elton! ❤️
I saw him in Detroit in October of 2018 on the Farewell Yellow Brick Road tour, which he is STILL on. Supposed to come through again in February. Yes he is that good live. The sound was perfect. He sang perfectly. What an awesome concert. Omg.
This was a big hit in the Black community. Bread - Make It With You Nancy Wilson - You Don't Know(How Glad I Am) Lou Rawls - You'll Never Find(Another Love Like Mine) The Eagles - One Of These Nights The Miracles - Do It Baby
First concert I saw at about age 12. This song was not live, they added the live sounds for effect. Bernie Taupin wrote nearly all of Elton John’s lyrics for years. He’d come up w them, hand em over to Elton who put a melody to them on piano and they took it from there.
I had to comment on this one. THIS song come out when I was in high school. This is my favorite Elton John song---back then we learned the words to the whole song. Can't help but like it.
I am going to keep this short and sweet, I find myself not wanting to be on this earth any longer but people like you keep me hanging on another day. Day by day, thank you for what you do.

Yes.
So so many!

Every single one he ever recorded!
Taupin writes the lyrics & Elton writes the music. I’d be willing to bet Elton came up with B-B-B-Benny.
Elton John was a child piano prodigy.
Great songwriting duo. Just like the Gershwins. When you think about it, what an accomplishment to have so many good songs written that way.
Who attended the Royal Academy of Music as he was that good.
The piano is just an extension of Elton in every way. He didn’t even have to think about playing it. It’s almost like it played itself.

Elton is the best. He is on my bucket list. To see a concert before I go. My terrible health makes that a scary thought. :-) Love your reaction!
You'll never run out of Elton, he has literally more than 100 great songs!
Are you kidding? I’ve had the chorus stuck in my head for decades...
and I love it! One of my favorites by this legend. 🎵
Love this song!!
Gosh!!!This takes me baaaaccckk,fabulous......thank you!!!🤗
You know I love Elton John.
You should try Crocodile Rock by Elton next, great song.
One of the biggest songs of the '70s. Couldn't get away from it.
J Thanks for making my day with Sir Elton the consummate entertainer -- I've seen him a half a dozen times - my all time favorite hands down.
Elton comes in, he ALWAYS delivers.
I saw him in concert in the 80s...the BEST concert I have EVER been to!
He is truly the only living king of Rock/Pop.
Omg I’m so glad you’re doing this song. I only wish you were watching the Soul Train version of Elton performing on there. It’s on RUclips
👍🏼👍🏼 Yellow Brick Road if you haven’t checked it out already. I think you have though.
Iconic. Got regular airplay for 30 years. This and "Someone saved my life tonight" are faves.
The song tells of "Bennie and the Jets", a fictional band of whom the song's narrator is a fan. In interviews, Taupin has said that the song's lyrics are a satire on the music industry of the 1970s. The greed and glitz of the early 1970s music scene is portrayed by Taupin's words:
"We'll kill the fatted calf tonight, so stick around, you're gonna hear electric music, solid walls of sound."
Taupin also goes on to describe the flashy wardrobe of "Bennie", the leader of the band:
"She's got electric boots, a mohair suit, You know I read it in a magazine Ohh..."
Produced by Gus Dudgeon, the song was recorded during the Goodbye Yellow Brick Road sessions in France at Château d'Hérouville's Strawberry Studios, where John and Taupin had recorded their previous two albums, Honky Château and Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player.
The song contains the line "She's got electric boots, a mohair suit", which is often misheard as "She's got electric boobs, and mohair shoes". A scene in the film 27 Dresses shows that this is but one of many mondegreens that listeners have invented for this song.
Great album!
I saw him in concert...He sang it all. This too!!❤ Long time ago💕He was insanely talented and still is.
This is one of my faves! Back in the day I worked with a kid named Benny, whenever I was looking for him, I'd sing the high part.. 🎤🎶"Benny! Benny! Benny! Benny and the Je-e-et-sssss"🎶
Elton John - Sad Song ( say so much ) from the 1984 album Breaking Hearts . Video filmed in Rushcutters , Sydney Australia
So glad I got to grow up listening to Elton John...what a talent! Love your reaction!
Good grief... I was in 8th grade! LOL. Elton John set British pop music in motion, post Beatles. Sad to see him retired because I love that he is happy and healthy with his husband and children. Cheers Elton! ❤️
Truly an icon. Many hits back in the FM radio days, before CD's.
I love how you actually FEEL the music..that's how you know when it's good!😄
Is there any song on Goodbye Yellow Brick Road that isn't great?
I can listen to this song over and over,! It gives me the same feeling now as it did in the 70's.....💕
One of my all time favorites, the whole album is great. Brings back great memories.
there's not one Elton John song that i dont dislike
“Dont dislike”. Youre basically saying you dislike all of eltons songs.
@@neilschroeder7854 😂😂😂 Pedantic, much? 💖
Sucks to be you. ha
Wow! Triple negative. Don’t see that everyday
As others say odd way of putting it. You like his music i assume
Bread - Make It With You
Nancy Wilson - You Don't Know(How Glad I Am)
Lou Rawls - You'll Never Find(Another Love Like Mine)
The Eagles - One Of These Nights
The Miracles - Do It Baby
Love Elton John!!!! Saw him in concert about 10 years ago. It was great!
You MUST check Elton out performing this song. I’m so happy I grew up in these days
One of my favorite Elton John songs. I remember seeing him on Soul Train as a kid in the 70s. It was a surprise while it was a jam. Good times✊🏾👍🏾
