I grew up with the music of Elton John. He was really big in the 70's-80's. He collaborated with Bernie Taupin since 1967 on more than 30 albums. They were one of the best song writing teams. Bernie wrote the lyrics & Elton supplied the melody. They had so many great hits together such as "Your Song", "Levon", "Tiny Dancer", "Rocket Man", "Honky Cat, "Crocodile Rock", "Daniel", "Bennie & The Jets", "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", "Candle In The Wind", "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting", Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding", "The Bitch Is Back", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me", "Someone Saved My Life Tonight" etc.

The piano sounds so distinctive here, because Elton's playing on the downbeat. He's hitting the keys in between the beats which is supposed to be really difficult. He's such a master in his craft.

I'm a piano player and I can tell you that playing this type of syncopated piano is very difficult to do well. Nobody had rhythmic appoaches like EJ
Bennie & the Jets! my favorite Elton John song. this song was on his greatest hits album! when my niece was a baby. we’d play this song for her & she bopped up & down in her diaper. She would point to the cassette player and say ‘John’ John meant she wanted Elton’s greatest hits. Her total favorite & mine too
You MUST do his masterpiece: "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding." It's 11 minutes long, but goes in so many different directions that make for an incredible journey.

Oh yeah!! He opens with that a lot which is PERFECT! To me, its his pinnacle just like Scenes from an Italian Restaurant is Billy Joel's. Seeing them together a dream come true!

Elton trained as a classical pianist in his childhood. This gave him incredible technique and expression.
Technique, definitely, but I think the expression comes from within, and his love of Jazz and Blues/Gospel.
Elton always said this song has a special place in his heart because it was his first number 1 hit on the US Rhythm and Blues charts. He even performed it on the 70's television show "Soul Train."
CLASSIC Sir Elton! You've got so many hits to go, you really can't choose one and go wrong. "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" is a banger, as is "Philadelphia Freedom", "Sorry Seems to Be the Hardest Word", "Crocodile Rock", and my personal fave, "Someone Saved My Life Tonight". I hope you do that one next.

Crocodile Rock is classic I seen Elton John about two years ago and when he played Crocodile Rock people were literally dancing in the aisles of the stadium. 100's of boomers rompin' and stompin' to Crocodile Rock.

In 5th grade, I proudly proclaimed that my FAVORITE Elton John song was "Philadelphia Freedom" and I'll still say it to this day. IT'S A BANGER!! My 5th-grade class took a cruise down the Chesapeake Bay on a boat for a class trip...they had a jukebox on the boat and we played this song over and over, we danced so hard to this song on the mid-deck they had to stop us cause the floor was bouncing...BEST memory of 5th grade.

Yep, it's mine too. I was 6 or 7 when the song came out so it is attached to great memories! However, I have to confess, for the longest time we (my sister and I) thought he was singing Philadelphia Eagles! I don't know how it got intertwined, but it stuck for the longest time! Lol 🤪

It's very good but certainly not his best.
They recorded this song with pretty much just vocals and piano and everyone at the record studio thought it was really weird and didn't know what to do with it, yet they were intrigued. Then somebody came up with the idea to add the audience sounds to it and that really transformed it. The audience track was actually from a James Brown concert!
I thought perhaps they walnuted up the Idea, but cashews are good too.

I've had/heard this album since the 70s. I did not know that
James Brown did the same thing on one of his singles from the 60s. It was recorded in the studio in Charlotte, NC, and then an audience track from one of his own concerts was added on top of it.
Elton John is like the Mozart or Beethoven of our generation. His music will still be listened to 200-300 years from now.
OMG! In the 70's I told my mom (who hated Elton John) that he is the modern day Mozart, of course she told me I was nuts.....you will not believe this but in the early 90's one day my mom asked me if I remembered telling her EJ was the modern day Mozart...I told her yes...."You were right, I apologize he is a piano genius". I about dropped! Told you so Mom!!! 😉

Yes Billy and Elton's concert tour was great and about 17 years ago now. two of the best piano players together and singing each others songs at times too.
That was a great concert tour. I got to see them twice together and multiple concerts with each individually.
Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting (studio version) does some neat things in the headphones. Honky Cat(again the studio version so you don't miss any of it) is my favorite...just the sheer musicality of it..its so much fun!

One of my favorite Elton John songs is “Mona Lisa’s and Mad Hatters” you should check it out. Also “Crocodile Rock” which is such a fun and catchy song.

Had to comment on this since I didn't see any other commenters mention this: This song was not a song recorded live in front of an audience. It was a studio creation. The engineer combined the studio track with a live audience recording, fading the audience levels in and out at appropriate times. This information was revealed in a documentary on the making of the "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album.
The one doing all the whistling was the tea boy.

One other thing about the audience clapping. The engineer said British fans were always a hair behind the beat (I think all audiences are) so he purposely has the clapping just a smidge behind the down beat to make it appear more like a live recording.

This one crossed color barriers back in the day. 🙏💕 Elton and Leon Russell were geniuses on piano and prolific songwriters. Legends. And don't forget Stevie Wonder on a revolving stool in his concerts playing between three different keyboards. 😉

I liked this song when he played it on Soul Train. He was the first white performer on Soul Train. It was trippy. Maybe next time you do Elton John, you'll play the video when he did "Philadelphia Freedom" on Soul Train.

As soon as Elton hits that quick opening chord, everyone knows what song it is. It's that iconic. The entire Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road album (where this song is from) is perfection. As I remember it, "Bennie And The Jets" was a huge hit on the black stations. And its been stated that Elton John was the first white artist to appear on Soul Train performing this song.
Was he? I thought it was David Bowie performing "Golden Years".
The first non-white artist to play on Soul Train was session guitarist Dennis Coffey, who did a lot of R&B and soul sessions. Number two: José Feliciano. Three: Gino Vannelli. Elton John was number four.

Actually came out in '73. Was on the Yellow Brick Road album. After it hit # 1 on the R&B charts, he played it on "Soul Train". The second or third time I saw him live (in the 80's -first saw him in '75) he extended the solo of this song into a wild 5 or 6 minute piano rampage.
Oh, the Elton John rabbit hole is an extremely deep one, loaded with lots of great songs! Elvis may be the King of Rock and Roll, but Elton was absolutely the King of the 70s!

I agree with you on that.. you could not turn on the radio in the early to mid 70s and not hear an Elton John song.. I was fortunate enough to be enrolled in one of those music clubs where they send an album every month (that is after you get a buttload of albums for like a penny at first) and Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player was one of the albums that was sent to me and it has always been a fave of mine.

Elton's falsetto was crazy in th3 70's... Nobody was doing what he did at that time. His concerts were epic for that time. Small venues compared to now so they were intimate but epic.

I remember hanging out, riding around and getting high and the music was blasting. I feel sorry for most folks who were not born in the 50s/60s. We owned this music. Loved it.
I've always liked his style of playing the piano. It's distinctive with a really nice melody to it. The way he sings this song is pretty unique, going into a falsetto voice on some of the verses. It a great song no matter how you slice it.
The instrumental interlude is one of the best ever, in all of music.

I LOVE LEVON!!!!! Bob Jovi actually did a pretty good cover of that on the Elton John and Bernie Taupin tribute album. Worth checking it out if you haven’t already.
Elton John was the BEST Concert I have ever been to. It was right after his Yellow Brick Road album came out.. His piano was clear glass. OMG!!!!
I actually went to the Face2Face concert with EJ and Billy Joel and, as great and fantastic as Billy Joel performed, EJ just blew him out of the water. It's the best show I've ever seen.
Man, I had this 45 as a kid in the late 70's & 80's. I listened to it pretty much every day. I have a suggestion. The B-side to this song was called "Harmony." It has one of the most beautiful, melodic choruses I've ever heard! Give it a listen!!!
EJ was a guest on The Muppet Show way back in the late 70s. He performed benny & the jets with the muppet band. There is a video on that song. Its awesome!

In the 70's he was a stoner, hippie rocker and he did a lot of performances, doing songs he usually did with his band, with just him and the piano. Those were my favorites.
This is a performance of his pop song Sad Songs, stripped down to a boogie woogie, back beat, soulful, Gospel masterclass in American music, given by the most unlikely of people; A little English guy that grew up listening to Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis and Fats Domino.

You just need to listen to the entire Goodbye Yellow Brick Road album. It's one of the all time greatest albums! Funeral for a Friend / Love lies Bleeding, Bennie and the Jets, Candle in the Wind, I've Seen that Movie Too, Grey Seal, Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, Sweet Painted Lady.... The entire thing is incredible!!

This song came out the year that I first went to college.....How did I live thru The CRAZY 70"s? Grateful...But we had so much FUN!!!!☮🕊💞🌹🌹🌹/aaahhhh 1973!
I saw Sir Elton perform live here in NZ in his "Jump up Down Under" tour....that would have been back in 1982 and he was simply amazing! He walked out on stage with his huge glasses, a hat and a white suit that was literally covered in small white light bulbs that he could make flash like an Xmas tree and he obviously thought it was hilarious because he demonstrated to us what it could do, chuckling away and cracking jokes as he did lol....he sat down at the piano to play and the crowd fell silent, just waiting! The audience was riveted and even though the music he initially played was from a brand new album that had either just been released or was about to be, he also came back to do many of his biggest hits in a very long encore....I think this man could have sung names from the telephone directory and people would have been impressed....in the encore he played Benny & the Jets, Rocket Man, Crocodile Rock, Yellow Brick Rd and other timeless masterpieces, but one of the songs that stood out for me and that I simply love to this day was from this (then) new album "Jump up" and it is a moving tribute to his dear, sadly missed friend John Lennon called "Empty Garden (hey, hey Johnny)" (his voice literally cracked as he sang it) and although I never hear it played these days, it has remained one of my all time favourites! I would love to see you react to it and to see if it moves you as much as it did me way back then.
The three most memorable concerts I have ever been privileged enough to attend are Elton John, David Bowie and Eurythmics....these are incredible experiences from the 80's that I will never, ever forget! Please, please. please can you please react to more Bowie such as China Doll, Let's dance and Cat People (Putting Out Fire)....all are absolute musts to listen to at least once in your life and I genuinely believe you would love them as much as I and so many others do! Thank you 😊

You guys are "old souls"! I was born in 1954 (67 years old now) and grew up listening to the music of the 60's and 70's, music that you are now learning about. I have been fortunate enough to have seen Elton John perform live, not once, but twice. I also saw the Beatles live in 1964 at the ripe old age of 10 years old. (My older sister didn't want to go the concert alone so she dragged me). I have seen live performances from Janis Ian, Phil Collins, James Taylor, Carole King, Rod Stewart, Billy Joel, Neil Young, along with his friends Crosby Stills and Nash. Watching you enjoy the music of my youth brings a smile to my face and lifts my heart. Thank you.

I have seen Elton four times,all I can say is that his performances are beyond entertaining. They definitely broke the mold when Elton was created.

I saw this live in 1975..........so friggin AMAZING!!
My first concert of Elton's was in 1976 - I was 15 years old and was so thrilled to see him live. I've seen him in concert countless times since, and he has NEVER once put on a subpar show. He's the definition of a 'living legend'.
As kid growing up in the 70s and 80s, I heard this song when my Dad was on the aircraft carrier USS Kitty Hawk. The captain's last name was Benjamin and they played this song when arriving and leaving port. Benny and the Jets will always remind of that part of my youth. Thank you!
Saw EJ for my first concert ever in '75-he played for 3hrs and the crowd was electric. Also saw him 2 yrs ago and it was also amazing-his piano playing is off the charts!

Thanks for playing this, it was a HUGE radio hit for Elton. Radio used to be so much fun in the 70's. I remember when this album came out, the same time Bowie's Young Americans was released, Todd Rundgren's Wizard, A True Star, and Steely Dan's Katy Lied. Such good music!!! Philadelphia Freedom would be a great follow up for you to react to or Don't Go Breakin' My Heart. Such great stuff!

Elton John is just special. “Your Song” is one that is special to me because it makes me think of my mom who died when I was young. I can’t make it through the song without bawling.
When I was pregnant with my son, I was thinking of naming him Benjamin. I couldn’t think of that name without thinking we could call him Ben or Bennie. That would inevitably lead to me singing Bennie and the Jets. I couldn’t ever think of that name without the song playing in my head so we ended naming him…..Kevin. No songs get stuck in my head with that name.
"Daniel" conjures the same response in me. Can't make it thru that song without getting teary-eyed.

After the death of Princess Diana Elton John and Bernie Taupin rewrote the lyrics to "Candle In the Wind", retitling it "Good-bye England's Rose". Elton John and Princess Diana were very close friends. When Elton John sang the reworked song at Diana's funeral he almost looses his composure. It was a very emotional experience.
Just a little personal note, the only time my father ever wanted to record an event on their VCR was Princess Diana's funeral. I had to go over to my parents house to set it up for them.
Being from Scotland we've never been too crazy about "the royals" but Diana was a different matter altogether. She was "The People's Princess" through and through. Even my mum loved her and cried as she watched her funeral.
Thank you guys. This is absolutely my favorite Elton song, which is saying something because he has so many great songs. Another outstanding piano player you haven’t reacted to yet is Bruce Hornsby. I highly recommend The Way It Is by him. Not only is it a great song musically, but it also has a great message.

We saw him on his farewell Goodbye Yellow Brick Road Tour in January at the Smoothie King Center in New Orleans in Jan. 2022. As far as songs I would want y'all to hear that would literally BLOW YOU AWAY - that's easy: Indian Sunset, Ticking, Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters, Someone Saved My Life Tonight, and Rocket Man (studio version), Burn Down The Mission, Honky Cat, Daniel, Madness (incredible piano,) FFAF/Love Lies Bleeding, among many....
One of my favorite converts. Back then, he was quite the entertainer. Costumes were off the charts. He set the mood for every song...and he kicks ass on the piano! His whole band was tight. ❤👍🤙

Gonna toss in another vote for "Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding." It's one I have to tread carefully with (the first half is angry grief encapsulated), but it's brilliant.
You could dip anywhere into Elton's back catalogue and be amazed.
But if you get a chance please listen to his amazing CANDLE IN THE WIND (the modified version he sang at Lady Diana's funeral. Shows how much he is respected. The words, his voice, the setting, the crowd outside the cathedral. The world watched.

Thanks to my half-sister, Elton John was played in our house so much from the time I was born, that by three, I could identify his voice, if he was playing on the radio in the store, for example.
Solid walls of sound .. his double album Yellow Brick Road is a masterpiece .. songs written by Bernie Taupin who wrote the words .. then Elton created the melodies .. remarkable .. truly .. check out his live concerts ..

You didn't realize Elton John was 70's?! He was the Biggest Artist of the 1970's. Especially from 1970-1976. He was also huge in the 80's & 90's. The song "Bennie And The Jets" actually came out in 1973. It was on the 1973 "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" album. But it was released as a single in 1974.

Elton's early stuff, up until 1975 or so, is amazing. Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting is pure dynamite, but there are so many great ones in those early years.

Dagmar S. mentioned enough I grew up listening to along with my older brother. You two have some great songs to look forward to both of you reacting to from Elton John! We saw Elton John in concert at the Hollywood Bowl and he was fantastic! Awesome performer on stage too! Peace!
Elton John was my very first concert in 1976. The entire show was full of hits and he's continued to write & produce even more great songs for decades.
Tumbleweed Connection is Elton's best album, perfect from beginning to end. And the best thing is that none of the songs got played to death
