There was pretty much nothing Elton couldn't do. "Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" is a rocker for sure. "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" is one of the most beautiful ballads ever.
For sure, Saturday nighs alright for fighting is a great rock n roll tune.
For a few years there, the Top 10 always included at least two Elton songs. It's really astonishing how he dominated the charts for so long.
Fkn word!!
'The Bitc# is Back' is a heavy hitter from Sir E.J.
Absolutely, "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters" is fantastic, and I haven't heard it is a while!
A few people have already mentioned it but if you like this, you'll love 'Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting', a great rock and roll song
Oooo! That is a good one!!
Yelp and Island Girl another great song!
Benny and the Jets
The bitch it back. Or rocket man would be my suggestions for sure
…or The Bitch is Back
"The Bitch is Back" is a great rocking Elton John tune. He has a whole sackful of rockin' and other hit tunes!
Back when "The Bitch is Back", was played on the radio, some stations told their DJs that they could play the song, but, they couldn't announce the title of the song. This led to some interesting work arounds. The one I most remember was the story of how Che' Guevara went to the jungle where the mosquitos were fierce He only had enough bug repellent to cover his front so...They bit Che's back.
The lyric "while the other kids were rockin' round-the-clock" refers to a 50s pioneering hit "Rock Around the Clock". Elton could do virtually anything.
Yeah it was one of the two Happy Days theme songs.
But another song by Bill Haley and the Comets was "See You Later Alligator (After awhile crocodile)". I always took these lines to mean he was not rocking to the big hit but was going his own way, ignoring what the other kids were doing. Still rocking but in his own way.
Props to Elton Jonh's longtime songwriting partner Bernie Taupin who provided all the words.
This is a homage to the 50s, which he grew up with. Oh and Elton can rock, oh yeah.
It's hard NOT to think of Little Richard or Jerry Lee Lewis when you hear "The Crocodile".
If it hasn't been mentioned, when he says "when the other kids were rocking around the clock, we were hoppin and boppin to the Crocodile Rock" he is referring to another dance craze of the time based on the tune by Bill Haley and his comets called "rock around the Clock".
“See You Later Alligator (After While Crocodile)” by Bill Haley & the Comets needs to be reacted to !!!!!!!!
@@nebelungpixie9373 I still say that to this day to my granddaughters I say see you later alligator and they say after a while crocodile
There was a song by Haley and Comets called See You Later Alligator which may have been an inspiration for the subject/title of this song.
@@nebelungpixie9373 YES! Be there, or be square lol
“Other kids rocking around the clock” could also be referencing another Bill Haley song, “Rock Around The Clock”. It supposedly is the song that made rock and roll mainstream
This is my mom's favorite Elton song as she is a child of the 50s. She dances to this song any time it comes on the radio. I took her to the Elton farewell concert as her 80th birthday present. Happily, mom is still a happy Elton John fan at 84.
Wow! What a great gift for your mom! I've heard Elton's farewell tour was absolutely amazing!
Definitely referring to the 50s: “I remember when rock was young…” And “while the other kids were rockin’ round the clock” is a reference to the big 50s hit by Bill Haley and the Comets, “(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock.”
There's a version of Sir Elton singing this song with the muppets. 😊 bet your kiddos would enjoy it.
From an episode of "The Muppet Show". This is a must watch for anyone of any age.
Especially when the crocodiles start singing 🤣 it’s epic
@B Gallagher "Grandma's Feather Bed" is one of my favorite songs from my childhood ❤
For theatrical I recommend him performing “Pinball Wizard” from the musical movie he was in called “Tommy” (1975)🔥
But they should probably do The Who's version first.
I was 13 when Tommy came out and I remember going seeing it in the theater and thinking what the f*** was that???
@@malcolmrowe9003 I think the point OP was making is that for a 'theatrical' rock performance, then Elton's version fits the bill more than The Who's version. I love The Who, saw 'Tommy' five times on original release.
@@Mirrorgirl492 oh I don't doubt that, but I still think it would be better to watch The Who's version first.
First time I heard this song, I was in Jr. High School. I love Elton John's early music. "Don't Go Breakin My Heart" with Ki Ki Dee was good also.
Love "Don't Go Breaking My Heart " !
Jr high also great mudic!
If you want to hear more rock from Sir Elton, give "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" a try.
And pleeeeaaase do "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues."
A million thumbs up to both these suggestions. Perfect taste, sir!
Agree!! I guess that’s why they call it the blues and candle in the wind was my faves
Absolutely, I'm sure you know, but for those who don't that's Stevie Wonder doing that soulful and unforgettable Harmonica solo in I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues.
I think you'd enjoy his hit "Saturday nights alright for fighting" too..It's one of his more upbeat/rocking songs. 😃
We were thinking the same thing.
second this
Absolutely
You should do “I Guess That’s Why They Call it The Blues” video.
I just saw him in concert last month and at 75 he still sounds great and plays the piano great and yeah there's not much Sir Elton John can't do. One of my favorites. And there was no lip syncing going on I can guarantee you that.
Remember as a kid watching Elton John preform this on The Muppet Showand falling in love with the song.Feet can't stand still to this day when I hear it. Great choice and reaction. 👍
Yeah! I forgot all about The Muppet Show! They had lots of good performers.
one of his best rocking songs with grit and his voice is Bitch is Back! must check out. one of his first hits.
also, Don't let the Sun go down on me (studio version) is one of his most popular ballads.
Off of Caribou, my favorite is Ticking
Oh, "The Bitch is Back" is such a fun, driving, gritty song! I put it in the CD when I'm feeling down. Gives me gumption to push on. :-) On a totally different note, I've always thought it would make a fun backdrop song for a doggie fashion show. Hahaha

Another vote for _Bitch is Back._
Don’t let the sun go down with George Michael is so good
Philadelphia Freedom is also quite the rocking tune. Probably included in that Best Of album you had displayed.
Island Girl too! Just listened to it.
THIS WAS '50'S STYLE ELTON. REMEMBER MY GRADE 7 TEACHER GETTING US TO SING THIS SONG WAY BACK IN '73-A BIG HIT WITH THE KIDS!
Everyone knows Elton has a ton of hits & another fun one is Pinball wizard! Stellar. Both he & Billy Joel can rock the piano.
Elton's ultimate rocker is "The Bitch Is Back".
"Funeral for a friend", "Madman across the water", "Levon". He's got so many great songs.
Definitely the whole "Funeral for a Friend/Love lies Bleeding"!
@@karenkat1111 Yes, that one is a must.
You took the words right out of my mouth
@@karenkat1111 yes I agree. "Funeral For A Friend/Loves Lies Bleeding" is the most epic of Elton John's songs.
@@glenonoko4918 ⬆ my vote ✔
The inspiration behind this song is awesome - when Elton toured Australia in 1972, he heard the song "Eagle Rock" by Daddy Cool and loved it
The sound of my childhood. Within two days of this song hitting the radio back in the 1970s, I had it memorized and was singing it 24/7.
My all time favorite Elton song is "Philadelphia Freedom" ! Its a rocker in my eyes, One of my older cousins introduced it to me when I was a kid and have loved it ever since. Also, a great song to check out (my #2 song of Elton's) is "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". There are 2 versions of it...Elton's original and then a duet he did with George Michael in the 90's...both are great!! That one is not a rocker song but I hope you check both of these out.
Philadelphia Freedom for some reason was on the radio EVERY single time I went to Clearwater Beach over decades of visits. So this is my beach song.
"Philadelphia Freedom" is my favorite too ! It was one of my first 45's 🥰🥰🥰
He’s a Big Rocker! And if you haven’t seen him play, you must! Love the costumes and the glasses! Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting and my other favorite, Rocketman.
I always laugh when he sings “Susie wore her dresses tight”…..haha! Lalalala!
His voice is amazing but watching him live play that piano on the big screen was absolutely crazy. Best concert ever and I’ve seen a lot of concerts!
I remember being at a concert when he introduced this song. He apologized for doing a new song that was not one of his hits that he already had. He assured the crowd that they would love it and boy was he right!
This was a big hit and the first taste of Elton John for many. He and Bernie Taupin were one of the most successful songwriting duos of the 70's.
"Philadelphia Freedom" and "Love Lies Bleeding" are two of his best. Both worth a listen. Oh, and if you think he's doing some gritty rocking on this one, you'll love 'Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting' another one of his biggest hits and most popular songs.
I agree to "Love Lies Bleeding" but you have to include the intro "Funeral For A Friend" to it. Only thing is when you put them together it is about 11 min long.
I really want them to react to Philadelphia Freedom.
Maybe that's why it's one of my favorite Elton John songs... It's one that takes me back to my own days... Like their oldest daughter' age. Great for family dance on the living room. 🎶💕
Or ever
Elton John contributed none-very little in terms of lyrics to the music he performs. His contributions are largely limited to composing and arrangement.
"Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting" and "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock & Roll)" are kickass bangers!! Also the "Love Lies Bleeding" part of "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" - the opening track of the Good-Bye Yellow Brick Road album - gets going pretty good, too. 🤘😎
You got that right!
Don't forget "I'm Still Standing." That's a rocker.
And All The Young Girls Love Alice off Yellow Brick Road is a great banger too.
YES
Can't explain how much fun Elton John concerts were. Saw alot of them, never dissapointed. Absolute blast
Elton John is my all time favorite performer. He's more than a musician to me. I can't imagine life without him. I love everything he does.
In the ‘70s there was a real nostalgic look back into the 50s. Simpler times, right? This is a nod to the 50s (when rock was young) it was a monster hit then, and it has survived the test of time.
Funeral for a friend/Love Lies Bleeding is a masterpiece. There are recent live versions that are amazing. For another rocker check out Saturday Nights Alright for Fighting! Sir Elton is one of our greatest gifts 🙂
AGREED...."Funeral for a Friend" greatest slow build up Rock song of ALL TIME....The level of Mozart or Bach......in my opinion
Best Elton song
The live versions of "Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" are indeed excellent, but for a first listen I'd still recommend the original studio version.
Funeral/Love is an amazing composition. A must-listen for anyone who hasn't heard it.
Oh God, PLEASE do this song!!!!!!
His rendition of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" (which can be heard during the end credits of the 1994 Disney classic The Lion King) is one of my favorite love songs. Same with "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart" which was covered in the movie "Ella Enchanted" by Anne Hathaway and Hugh Dancy.
🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Elton has SOOOOOOO much range. It's insane. His catalogue has a bit of everything. If you want more rock listen to Saturday Night's Alright For Fighting. If you thought this was rockin you will be blown away by Saturday Night. Check it out!!
As a kid growing up in the 70s, this was a song, that when played at elementary school, had all of us dancing and just wanting to move.
I remember those days with affection
I was in high school when this song was released and it was one of the few songs that got everyone out in the dance floor in those days….even proverbial self-conscious teenager!
Every time I hear this song I'm thrown back to early 70's when I was a young teenager, just discovering the wonderful world of music!!
Same!
If you want to go to a concert, Elton John is a must. He is on his last tour right now. This will be your last chance to see him live and you won't be disappointed. He still sounds great.
I've had tix for his houston show in Nov for over a year
His last tour till his next last tour.
@@dggydddy59 He's 75 years old. I don't know if I would want to wait for his next last tour.
I saw this show in Kansas City. It was great!
@@patswanson2870 LOL! I hear that!
You gotta find a live video of him in those days. The costumes and funky glasses he wore were so awesome. I remember sitting in my bedroom with my portable record player and my vinyl records listening to this. Happy times!
Elton can't be pinned down to a style. He does it all! I've been a fan since I was in grade school in 1973, and he always surprises me.
This song was part of the Fifties revival that occurred along with the hit movie "American Graffiti." Billy Joel's "Uptown Girl" is part of it, Bob Seger's "Old Time Rock and Roll," and others. On TV, stage, and theaters you had "Happy Days," "Laverne and Shirley," and "Grease." "Crocodile Rock" (1972) may have been the first hit of the group.
Just FYI, Uptown Girl came out 10 years after American Graffiti.
Oh but Elton owns the prototypical rock anthem with " Saturday Night is alright for Fighting".
Oh Yea!
Elton is like the Beatles, in that he covered about every type of music and genres you can think of. The Elton John rabbit hole is a very deep, diverse and eclectic one. My favorite albuma will always be Madman Across the Water and Yellow Brick Road. Every song on both are great.
Yellow Brick Road was a break-through album for Elton John, and the intro of Funeral for a friend/Love Lies Bleeding set the high standard for everything that followed on it.
Such a fun song.Young Elton sounded great.Early Elton was flamboyant with those glittery suits and those funky eyeglasses.
I went to pick frames for new glasses at Walmart and they have Elton John designer frames.
He owned early to mid 70's, doing it all! His band were with him forever, epic musicians.
1st time I ever heard this our elementary school music teacher played it for us. Blew us away. It became a huge hit on the radio…along with everything that followed: Daniel m, Your Song, Island Girl, Pinball Wizard, etc.
Rob Squad, you definitely got the right feel for this song. It was retro '50s, which were represented everywhere that year, in the music, in television --Happy Days and Laverne and Shirley were the primetime sitcoms of the day. The Fonz was the man. Love your reviews. Wow! What a blast from the past. 😮
Add "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" to your reaction play list to understand how truly musically gifted Elton John is.
I remember being 4 years old when this song came out, my aunt played it all the time. Now here it is 50+ years later, my aunt has long since passed, life has changed a million times over, but these great songs completely connect us back to those moments. It's magic
I was in 2nd grade when this song came out.
I loved it when it came over the radio. And, oh man, the trouble I'd get into dancing around the back seat when Elton sang about your feet not keeping still!
I was 5 and it was my grandmother but the same magic! MUSIC!
Great comment 👍
I was four years old too, with my first record player. This and Philadelphia Freedom were two of my first 45's. My parents didn't seem to mind hearing the same song 20 times in a row, lol.
Thanks Mom and Dad 🥰
I was a teen, when this song came out,and WOW. I want to go back.
This is one of my many favorite Elton John songs since it came in 1973 when I was 9. I've seen him live 5 times over the years (one of those was his Face To Face tour with Billy Joel). There is nothing like seeing him pounding those piano keys live in person! His music is definitely a variety of sounds, there are so many more rocking ones like this. Thanks for reacting to this!
Elton's FIRST #1 Record!! There's no dance, it was a tribute to the 50s. More from the "Yellow Brick Road" album, "Grey Seal", "Your Sister Can't Twist (But She Can Rock & Roll)", and especially "Harmony".
Since you like both Elton John and George Michael, their duet "Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me" would be a cool song to react to.
I second that.
yes!
Great suggestion 💙
It was called "Don't Let Your Son Go Down on Me" originally.
@@thenazz724 Hahaha Funny guy.
So many great songs, it's hard to pick one Elton John song. I suggest you listen to Daniel by him. Love you guys, always make my day..
Wouldn’t have picked this one.
"Daniel" is a beautiful song 🥰🥰🥰
This is a tribute to the 50’s rock, so Amber was right when she said it had an old sound, it definitely does and he says so in the song I remember when rock was young says it all.
I had the absolute pleasure of seeing Elton live 4 times ..EACH show was different and incredible! His amount of hits and styles of songs seems endless! (and MANY of he non-hit songs are great too!) If you can listen and react to something long I would suggest "Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding" 2 of the shows I saw through the years THIS was his opening number and it was magic and got things going so well!
I was about 6 when this came out and my cousins had the single and we played it over and over again. I still love this one, it's a fun song.
We must be the same age 😉
I was 11 and remember it being all over radio at the time. Elton was the only rock artist my grandmother would let us bring or listen to at her house.
Omg, we danced to this in one of my dance recitals when I was probably 7... have loved Elton John since 💖
Crocodile Rock is from his “Don’t Shoot Me I’m Only The Piano Player” album (‘73). You should react to more from this album and this era. “Teacher I Need You” would be appropriate for Rob Squad!
One of his best, and early on to boot.
Elderberry Wine. That's the first Elton John LP I bought.
@@oldeskoolnana7543
This was my older sister's first album and we played it to death.
Blues For Baby And Me is one of my fav Elton songs.
Crocodile Rock was on Honky Chateau. 71 or 72.

Check again. It was on Don't Shoot Me I'm Only The Piano Player.
"Whatever Gets You Through the Night" was a smash rocker hit duet by Elton and John Lennon.
The first Elton John record I ever bought. The little 7” 45. This, then “Daniel”. Bought those when they first came out. Finally got to see him many years later when he and Billy Joel toured together. Amazing. My favorite EJ album is “Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy”, which is an excellent song too. “Someone Saved My Life Tonight” was on that. “Curtains” on that is my fav Rlton John song ever. 💜 “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road” is amazing. “Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding” is an amazing composition and shows his piano skills. Versatile. 💜
Captain Fantastic & the Brown Dirt Cowboy is a great album. I think I need to buy a turntable so I can listen to all my old albums!
CF&BDC is my favourite album of his too, and Someone Saved My Life Tonight my favourite song. Remember that booklet that came with the album with all the old pictures and biographical details? The album cover was amazing too.
@@heidiv5488 Oh, yes. Such a great album and such great artwork. I still have mine. 💜
My first single bought of Eltons xxx
oh yes Daniel is a classic, but I would mention candle in the wind too!
"Crocodile Rock" was Elton John's first #1 record on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Hit #1 on Feb. 3, 1973 and logged 3 weeks at the top. It was John's 8th chart single and 4th Top 10 hit.
As of 2005, (where the book stats end), Elton John charted 68 singles on the Billboard Hot 100, 26 hit Top 10, 8 @ #1. Time range: 30 years : 1970 - 2000. By decade, Elton John ranked as such: 1970s: #1, 1980s: #10, 1990s: #9. As of 2005, he ranked as Billboard's #3 All-time artist. And that stat holds to today, he's still ranked @ #3 -- behind #1) The Beatles & #2) The Rolling Stones. There's another Billboard ranking chart: All Time Hot 100 Artists (for singles): #1) The Beatles, #2 Madonna, #3 Elton John.
Some great stats, but one error: this was Elton's 13th single release (counting US and UK releases), not his eighth, though it *is* true that it was his eighth single to chart on the Billboard Hot 100.
His singles, (citing US chart numbers) up to the time of "Crocodile Rock"'s release, are:
I've Been Loving You (1968) (Unreleased in the US)
Lady Samantha (1969) (Did Not Chart)
It's Me That You Need (1969) (Did Not Chart)
Border Song (1970) (#92)
Rock & Roll Madonna (1970) (Did Not Chart)
From Denver to L.A. (1970) (Did Not Chart)
Your Song (1970) (#8)
Friends (1971) (#34)
Levon (1971) (#24)
Tiny Dancer (1972) (#41)
Rocket Man (1972) (#6)
Honky Cat (1972) (#8)
Crocodile Rock (1972) (#1)
There was a pretty strong '50s nostalgia wave during the '70s. This song reflects that .
Greta Elton songs you truly have never heard, Madman across the water, Harmony, 2 less played forgotten GREATS!
Funeral For A Friend/Love Lies Bleeding rocks like no other Elton John song, though he has so many wonderful songs!
A young Elton!!!!! This song came out when I was a teenager and we listened to it over and over. Good memories
I've always loved this song...makes me dance everytime I hear it. "I Guess that's Why they Call it the Blues" is another really good and underrated Elton John song.
Play it for this generation they wouldn’t know how to dance to it .. 70’s generation they are on their feet dancing away. The best decade for music 70’s hands down 👍
You fools just are annoying. Just shut up!
I saw him on concerts in the late 90s and he did ALL his stuff. I kept waiting for smoke to come out of the piano. Just an amazing, great night!
This is the very first Elton song i heard on the radio. I saw him live in 1976! It was a blast! You have to react to Funeral for a friend/ love lies bleeding in my hand. If at all possible there is a live version of this dated sometime in the 70s. It's Elton rocking in his prime. This song has unbelievable piano in it. There's a comment below that says it will blow you away. I 100%agree!
I saw him in ‘76, too. Chicago Stadium.
@@writerjohnmcnally the bicentennial tour!!!!
@@writerjohnmcnally Gillett Stadium. But it was called Foxboro Stadium then. In Massachusetts.
There were several big hits in the early years (70’s) when Elton became famous…this was one of those songs. He played several huge hits when he toured America for the first time. Saturday Night’s All Right for Fighting and Bennie and the Jets were 2 other original hits of that time. Everyone went crazy for Elton because of this album. And then, his crazy costumes and glasses and platform shoes. What a character…it was a first in rock and roll…the theatrical look when performing.
Oh, Elton surely can rock! I saw him in concert at Dodger Stadium back in 1975. A great memory.
THIS is my all time favorite Elton John song.
It was a HUGE hit when I was in high school ('72)
It is for sure 50's Rock & Roll nostalgia
My favorite rockin' song of Elton John's is "Saturday Night's Alright (for Fighting)". Elton even did a Reggae song on the same album (Goodbye Yellow Brick Road 1973) called "Jamaica Jerk Off"
Goodbye has so many great songs including Jamaica Jerk Off. If they want to hear a very heavy rocker, they need to play All the Young Girls Love Alice. If you guys feel Crocodile Rock is a rocker, you will be shocked by Alice and then amazed by Jamaica. Elton lost me after his Captain Fantastic and Caribou albums ... for the most part. I'm glad you experienced another side of Elton as he could successfully perform in most any genre of music.
Elton is going through a catalogue of early Rock elements - common chord progressions, drums beats, snippets of tunes - all familiar to people my age and a little older. There was no "Crocodile Rock", though. Bernie Taupin wrote the lyrics, and they are often metaphorical. Any dance he loved could be "Crocodile Rock". This way he didn't have to try to use an actual dance name. Brilliant!
Elton is one of a kind for sure. His music is timeless and is versatile to soulful love songs to hard hitting favorites.no wonder he's been around so long
You need to react to "The Bitch is Back" by Elton John. Good rocking song.
Yes! Most definitely
70's Elton was excellent....90's Elton was equally excellent!! Definitely check out his stuff from the 90's too like "Healing Hands", "I Don't Wanna Go On With You Like That", "Believe", "Club At the End of the Street", "The One", "Sacrifice", "Can You Fell the Love Tonight", "Circle of Life"
Im surprised Club hasn't made it to any of Elton's recent hits collections. Or Healing Hands for that matter. Sleeping with the Past is often overlooked now, but they were great singles at the time.
Oh yeah, Elton John was not just a ballad king. A lot of his songs are up beat. But one thing is for sure, Elton proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that the piano is a percussion instrument.
Amber got it. The "doo wop" part of the song refers to the 50s/early 60s when new dances with funny names were the rage. He has "an old gold Chevy and a place of my own" like someone in their late teens/early 20s. But then he comes up in time and the music and singing changes to 70s rock. He goes back and forth in time reminiscing. That's how I always looked at in anyway.
Amber, you’re on point! It’s a late 50’s sound.
I'm 56 and I remember this song when I was in the 3rd or4th grade.
A girl in my class wanted to throw a dance party at the clubhouse. I remember her crying her eyes out cause no one was dancing.
What the hell do you expect!! We're in the 3rd or 4th grade when cooties were still a thing.
I’m the same age as you and I remember asking my mom who “ Rock” was. 🤣 I knew Rock Hudson and watched the Flintstones so it seemed logical. I thought it was a song about Elton’s friends Rock and Susie.
LOL im old enough to remember the cooties....
I’m still standing by Elton John really rocks
Simply ! The best of the Best ! Thanks nice couple
Who remembers Elton John on the Muppet Show with The crocodiles. Yes that was classic old Muppets when they were good.
I remember my childhood best friend and I would put on the record with this song playing at a higher RPM than it was intended to be played at. My friend, wow, she could sing along to this at a mile a minute. We cracked ourselves up, lol!
Love you both….but I always notice when Amber is enjoying a song so much, she will tenderly grab her earphones. We get it…it’s like an eargasm. 😂👍
"Philadelphia Freedom", "Pinball Wizard", "Daniel", "Candle in the Wind", "Nikita", "Can You Feel The Love Tonight", "I Guess That's Why They Call It the Blues ", "I'm Still Standing ", "Your Song", "Don't Go Breaking My Heart", "Sad Songs", "Little Jeanie", "Don't Let The Sun Go Down On Me". . .
So many great songs to choose from ❤
OMG this is the first song I heard Elton John sing on the radio when I was about 9 in 1969 or so lol I have always loved him ever since!!!
1972 actually, same here. This was definitely one of the first ones of his that I ever heard, probably on the school bus radio...lol.
Released 1973
@@terrylove2156 it was released around Thanksgiving 1972. The album itself, Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player, was released in 1973.
I feel so lucky to have seen Elton John live, in the 70s. Great performance, with a mix of soft love ballads, power pop, and all-out rockin' numbers. What fun!
That sounds Amazing! 🥰
I wish I'd seen this episode sooner because then you might have seen this comment. In 1972 I (like many others) flew a helicopter in Vietnam. We didn't often hear radio from back home but we knew and loved the heavy music from the time. Then one night in the club we heard Crocodile Rock. We all looked at each other and decided that the world had gone crazy. Good crazy, but crazy.
A few years later, Philadelphia Freedom was the last song I heard on my aircraft's radio on my final Army flight. Philadelphia Freedom is like a time machine for me. Thanks, Sir Elton.
Elton John was the guy for 70's pop. He so many great songs back then. Great reaction. TY.
"There are things like 'Crocodile Rock,' which was fun at the time, but it was pop fluff. It was like, 'Okay, that was fun for now, throw it away, and here's the next one. So there's a certain element of our music that is disposable, but I think you'll find that in anybody's catalog." Elton John
And they could not stop playing it; I love Elton - an all time fave for me - but this and "Saturday Night's Alright..." were so overplayed it took years to be able to listen to them again lol.
And we know that artists are often critical of their work, at times extremely so, but for me, this song wraps me up in my own nostalgia for my first car(1968 T-Bird, white with a black landau roof and a faux red leather interior!) and all the FUN times that went with it. Bought it in ‘74 for $600, had ~72k miles on it. Hide away lights that after a while I had to wire open the doors, lol, ...oh well, good times!!
Great quote, which may explain why we never hear it live. But it really is one of my favorite Elton songs. Love the retro vibe.
elton takes you to special places, everytime. My suggestions for you to react next are "Levon", "sorry seems to be the hardest word" and "someone saved my life tonight", but first of all of them, you need to listen to george michael and elton john live version of "dont let the sun go down on me", it will blow your minds
Oh my goodness! This was my roller skating days music. Such a fun song. And yes it’s a really old 70’s song. 🛼🛼💘
Exactly! Definitely nostalgic and harkening back to the early days of rock and roll (“I remember when rock was young…”) and has a 50ish sound. Elton IS def one of the greats!
50+ years ago there were plenty of “novelty rock” tunes meant to deliver smiles. Elton delivered.
The style of this song is a nod to the 50's 'do wop' when the chord pattern was widely used by many early artists like Dion and the Belmonts. Led Zepplin's 'Dyer ma'ker' is another example. Elton John and co writer Bernie Taupon made an incredible team.
This song always brings back good memories. When this song first came out in 1972, my older brother was 11 and he loved it as soon as he heard it. He used to sing it all the time. One day he was in his bedroom recording himself sing it and had left the door open, so a few of us other kids came up and quietly stood in the doorway listening. He got to the “lala-lala-la’s” and it was as he was singing the last one that he spun around while singing and saw us. His last “la la la” slowly ground down into a groan and we all just fell over each other laughing. We wouldn’t let him delete the recording at the time, but he eventually got rid of it. Then ten years later, he died in a car accident. Now when I hear this song, I can still see his face and hear that “la la la” grinding down and it makes me smile every single time.
Elton owned the Billboard #1 spot for multiple weeks at a time during the majority of the '70s. 🙂
