Actually, that's rather normal for people who have studied composition at a conservatory. Too bad there arent too many of those in the pop music industry these days ...
Here at 1:30 is an example of a famous (well, famous in Germany) pop singer and composer being handed a 19th century poem and composing a fitting song on the spot, within seconds: ruclips.net/video/qhhavwAc5As/видео.html
At the same time, he was one of the pioneers of using synthesizers (analogue Moog synthi) in German pop music. Or maybe you'd call it progressive rock at the time? ruclips.net/video/Gqq1x_EvtuA/видео.html
This is the kind of pop music he was doing normally
      ruclips.net/video/ePsC_hNOi14/видео.html
Music was generally ok; what stood out was his high quality lyrics, often analysing social problems of the day ...
His last concert at age 80 back in 2016 ...

Did your Mom explain that back in the 50's and 60's, Sock Hops were so popular because during that time of the Baby Boomer era schools had such high enrollments that the only place large enough to hold a dance was the gymnasium. The problem was they had real hardwood floors that would be damaged by wearing street shoes on them. So, they were only allowed to dance on them if they were in their stockinged feet! AND back then "tennis shoes" were ONLY worn for gym class!

Elton John overdubbed on both the lead and backing vocals, and (also by overdubbing), played both the piano and organ parts, and did the clapping. The backing band consisted of Davey Johnstone on guitar, Dee Murray on bass and Nigel Olsson on drums. The organ on this song reminds me of the pre-British Invasion rock and roll of the early 1960s.

If you get to watch any live versions of Elton John, his piano playing never disappoints! It’s so much fun to watch him play.

I remember being very young when this came out.. My parents bought me an a mini organ/keyboard with a tiny bench.. it’s gone many years since, but it was one of the first songs I learned to play on that keyboard..My Dad used to kneel in front of it and pretend he knew the notes..he played instruments by ear.. All the fun I had back then, we used sing the la la la part as loud as we could driving every one in the house nuts...Every time I think of him when this song comes on.. I so wish he was still here to make my heart happy again.. He made me love music from day one....🎹🎼🎹

This a good upbeat one of his. I wasn't a fan of Elton John until I had gifted one Xmas a greatest hits cd of his about 20 years ago .What quality songwriting and Elton,s voice is gold.Fav one of his is Daniel 😊 The films Gnomeo and Juliet introduced his music to a new generation of audience too !🙂👌

“Candle in the Wind” - originally written about Marilyn Monroe, but modified when his friend Princess Diana passed.
“Empty Garden” - written about his friend John Lennon’s passing.
    Both are gorgeous songs.
“Someone Saved My Life Tonight” - written about his near marriage and attempted suicide.
“Sorry Seems to be the Hardest Word” - one of my favorite Elton songs. Heart wrenching.
“We All Fall in Love Sometimes/Curtains” - from the Captain Fantastic album. “Curtains” is my absolute favorite of Elton’s. Since it follows/runs into “We All Fall in Love Sometimes”, they’re often presented together. Great stuff.

I love this song! I love all the nostalgia songs for early rock n’ roll, like The Beach Boys’ “Do You Remember?” Btw in this song, where Elton sings falsetto, that’s just like passages in a lot of 50s songs. I love that era of pop music so much!

Elton is surely one of the most gifted of modern music composers. From this rock and roll fav, he runs the gamut of genres to Broadway musicals. You must watch his "Electricity" from his musical Billy. The London performance of this, especially adapted for the Royal Command Performance, is wonderous.

He is a great character and musician/singer/songwriter, he is one of the greats in my opinion but after hearing him sing Candle in the Wind for Princess Diana I couldn't listen to him until now but it was great to hear him again. Take care and stay safe please my friends God bless you all love hugs and peace to everyone Mary-Ellen UK

As much as this song was played back in the day, you can never stop feeling the urge to hop to the Crocodile Rock. One minor thing that got me about Elton John was my lack of ability to make out some of the lyrics he was singing in certain songs. in this song, the main lyric was what sounded like he was singing the word Crile-Rocket. I later found out that was exactly what he was singing. Croc-O-Dile Rock-et had too many syllables in it, Elton just shortened it to Crilerocket. BRILLIANT!!! Elton John always had a unique variety of tunes that didn't sound all the same like some singers had. I wish I had got to see him in concert at least once, especially while still in his prime.

Don't know if Elton ever visited the tiny holiday resort of Millport on the Firth of Clyde, Scotland. But there is a rock there that's called the Crocodile Rock, because of it's "resemblance" to a crocodile rearing out of the beach. The eyes and teeth are painted in with white, red and black paint. Used to spend family summer holidays there and in my head, that's what he is singing about

  • @markharris1125

I've been listening to Elton since he started, more or less, and sometimes when you've heard a song a thousand times you start to get a little dismissive of it, 'Oh, not Crocodile Rock again!' I've come on RUclips and written 'Why don't people listen to some other stuff, there are dozens of songs better than Crocodile Rock'. I read an interview with him recently where he said that he looks forward to the day, after he finishes touring, when he can forget about songs like this and play some of the lesser-known ones.
But seeing it brand new through your eyes makes me realise what a genius he was and is, and what a great pop song this is. Thanks for reminding me of that.
Oh, and as others have said, watch him do this on the Muppets. Genius, I tell you, genius.
Something else to listen to . . . well, Saturday Night's Alright, of course. From the same album, I've Seen That Movie Too. Someone Saved My Life Tonight. Gotta Get A Meal Ticket. . . . I Gotta go, or I'll be here all night.

Just before this, I listened to your reaction to New Order. How about hearing what Elton was up to in the 90s? The One, Believe, Made in England, Live Like Horses, Something About the Way You Look Tonight. Not his greatest period, I must admit - he came back with a bang in 2000 with Songs From the West Coast. Still, The One is a powerful song and there's a version of Horses with Pavarotti, so there is that.
