The story about how Elton and Bernie came together is the stuff of legend. After Elton failed a record company audition, he told the producer he could write music but not lyrics, Williams gave him a batch of poems by someone who had answered the same ad. On the train home, Elton opened the envelope and, struck by what he read, contacted Bernie.

Remember that Elton arranges the music.. the lyrics are from his long-time musical partner, Bernie Taupin who gets credit for those words that we all love and his special way of putting them together. Early Elton is the best (such as Daniel).. you really need to check out Madman Across The Water from the album with the same title. It is AMAZINGLY beautiful and haunting. You could spend weeks on this rabbit hole. Love the reactions and the channel. Take care all! Oh and as an aside and this is my opinion, but hearing Amber mention Elton's voice going higher.. sadly, he can no longer hit those notes due to surgery that he had to have on his vocal cords sometime in the, I want to say without looking it up, late 80s, early 90s (could be wrong on the time line) but since then, his voice has never been the same, but I still love "Sir" Elton.

This song was sad even before I knew what it was about. "I miss Daniel so much." It's not just Daniel's physical absence, It that Daniel returned from war a different person. It broke him. We know about the casualties, the trauma that soldiers can experience in war, but we don't always think of those back home that end up hurting as. I'm sure the timing was an accident, but tomorrow is Veteran's Day. This song is a reminder that not only the soldiers make sacrifices.

I was only 14 years old when John Lennon was assassinated, and Bernie's stunning lyrics drove home to me what an impact he had on the world. Using a gardener to describe the great John Lennon showed me how brilliant Bernie was, and the line 'Its funny how one insect can damage so much grain' showed me how MDC truly destroyed the lives of millions of people. At the same time I truly felt the loss of John, I discovered what a brilliantly metaphoric writer Bernie Taupin is.

@@lisaberry862 Yes, Bernie and Elton made such a brilliant writing team. Bernie with those genius lyrics and Elton with his equally genius music. I remember those words to Empty Garden. Let me tell you, I always cry when Elton gets to t he end of that last verse, "He must have been a gardner that cared a lot. Who weeded out the tears and grew a good crop. *Now we pray for rain. And with every drop that falls, we hear your name* . I cry because you feel that they truly felt that pain. Because if *I* can feel that intense emotion listening to the song as a fan, I can only imagine how much it affected Elton who was personally involved. I was just a few years younger than you when John Lennon was killed. I was 11 years old. I've never gotten over it. I remember hearing it on the news and wanting to call my sisters. I could only get a hold of one sister and she was crying when she picked up the phone. I remember her saying, "Any kind of John Lennon and Beatles memorabilia that you can find, you can get that for me for Christmas.". And I *do* remember finding a few magazines with front cover tributes. 'Time' or 'Life' or 'Rolling Stone'? I can't remember. Two of those? All three? I can't remember.

Elton John was one of the first musical artists I got into when I was a wee lad. Mainly because my older sisters were very much into him and bought every album as they came out. While i like some of his songs from the 1980s-1990s, I will always prefer his 1970s tunes. I know you've already reacted to several Elton John tunes, but there's plenty more you need to get to. I'd love to see you react to one of his first songs called Skyline Pigeon. His first album released in the US was his self titled album, which contained the song Your Song and came out in 1970. Skyline Pigeon was from his album Empty Sky which was actually recorded before the self-titled LP, but not released in the US until 1975. On Skyline Pigeon instead of a piano I believe he plays the harpsichord, which creates a different but beautiful sound.

The reason this song sounds different than other Elton John songs is because this one features the electric piano for the mellow vibe.

Bernie Taupin and Elton John have never sat in the same room together to write a song. Bernie writes the lyrics alone, then sends them to Elton who sets them to music. That's how they have worked since 1967.
There definitely is piano on this song, only it's a Fender Rhodes electric piano, not the more normal acoustic piano. You can hear it throughout the song, with a kind of softer attack to the notes than a regular piano.

LOL, about a year later it was on the news that they busted these guys with a two-car garage full of recordings, equipment, and blank tapes, all worth about $40,000!--a lot back in the early 70s.

Possibly so! But Burt Bacharach and Hal David come very close. The great thing about Lennon and McCartney is they each wrote both words and music to their own songs. Occasionally they collaborated but not that much. Another very successful duo is Carole King and her husband Gerry Goffen or is it Coffen?

Wilson Phillips covered this song back in the 90s and while I didn’t know the original too well, I really loved that song. My mom never liked it and my aunt later explained that the song came out right after their oldest brother, an Army medic, died trying to save another soldier in Vietnam. She said my grandma always turned it off so the whole family eventually kind of developed an aversion to it. I wish I could’ve met my uncle. He sounded like a really charismatic person

Hi Amber Jay interesting you say What fantastic songs they write together and fit Elton so well! You might be surprised to learn that Elton and Bernie have never been in the same room when writing a song the way it's alway done, is Bernie sends Elton a lyric then Elton writes the melody this is how they've worked since meeting in 1967 when both answering an advertisement in a music magazine, Bernie asking for a composer Elton needing a lyricist best wishes to you both keep doing what you do!

This song was actually taken from a real-life event, seen through the eyes of the lead character's younger brother. A young man lost his eyesight as a result of combat in Vietnam. He comes home and he's not the same person anymore; and dealing with his wounds seen and unseen, his life and how he feels and deals has gone through a maturation. he feels a need to reinvent himself; so he leaves the Americas and relocates to the one place where he ever felt real peace; even when he was healthy.

I'd forgotten about that one, l used to have the album Made in England, but it was on a cassette and unfortunately went the way a lot of my cassettes went, in the bin. Don't know if it was me, but a lot of my tapes seemed to develop problems and resulted in the singer sounding like they were being strangled!
First time I've seen a comment about "Lies" a good suggestion, I've made a few suggestions myself, most of my favourite Elton songs are album tracks such as Tower of Babel, Holiday Inn, No Shoestrings on Louise, My Father's Gun, Runaway Train, The Ballad of Danny Bailey, Cage the Songbird, The Ballad of the Boy in the Red Shoes and my favourite of all Ticking. I could go on, so many wonderful songs especially from his early albums.

When Elton wrote the music for this song, he chopped off the last verse because he thought the song was already too long. The deleted verse explained that "Daniel" was a Vietnam vet who returned home to the farm after the war, couldn't find peace, and decided to leave America and go to Spain. With the last verse chopped off, it became a fairly vague story of two brothers who part ways, although Bernie Taupin says that losing the verse wasn't a big deal.

My first time hearing this was an evening in the 1973-ish era, Sophomore in High school. A friend swooped by to pick me up on our way to co-ed gymnastics practice. But before we even pulled out of the driveway, this song came up on the radio. He adjusted the volume knobs to enhance what we were listening to. We just sat there hearing every word of the story painted by the master. It was heartfelt as by that point in life, we had all lost someone, somewhere at one time or another. By the songs ending tears flowed from us both and it imprinted totally and forever as a "moment". I can still see that light from that sunset. I can still picture my friends curly hair, hazel eyes ~

This song, like "Crocodile Rock", comes from the album Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only the Piano Player (1973). I have been a fan of Elton John ever since I was 7 years old. I have said for years that I came for "Crocodile Rock", and I stayed for "Daniel". "Daniel" is my all-time favorite song, and I will tell you why in a little bit.
The reason why the first verse repeats is because the original third verse drove home what the song really was about. In it, a young man wonders what happened to his brother Daniel, who was a Vietnam War veteran. The reason why Daniel went to Spain is because of the mistreatment he had received by his fellow countrymen after coming home from the war. A last-minute decision was made to drop the third verse and just repeat the first verse. This left the song open to interpretation, which is why I regard this as my favorite song.
In April 1971, I was just shy of 6 years old. My mother, my brother, and I were on a road trip up the coast of Southern California. We were outside Santa Barbara, when another vehicle lost control and hit us head-on. I was uninjured, and my mother was hospitalized for about a week, but my brother didn't make it. His name was Danny. He was 2½ old. Less than two years later, this song came out. Every time I hear it, it reminds me of him.

I'm so glad you love Elton- his music meant so much to me growing up through the 70s; from 1970-6 he hit a period of unequalled prolific genius, the classics, the hits, the hidden treasures too just flowed from him. Then it all caught up with him, the work-rate, the drugs, the reaction to his coming out as bisexual in 1976 (in USA his sales dropped 25% overnight, people were burning his records)...
