@@staceyott7136 TC is notoriously shy and has always been uncomfortable performing. However something magical happens when she does a duet. Suddenly she is all smiles and really seems to be enjoying herself. It was also obvious that after all these years she has lost nothing and if anything has grown as a performer.
Tracy’s song was Luke’s favorite- and he had a country hit with it. Look how much he worships her. It was wonderful and Tracy looks and sounds fantastic!
Combs credits this song (from two years before he was born) with making him want to be a singer. It is a pivotal life event for him, and his goal was to share that experience with the next generation. He wanted her to get all the praise she deserves and never be forgotten.
His Dad played it when Luke was a kid and he says he always loved the song. If you listen to his version and Tracy’s original, he didn’t do too much to it. He said there was nothing to do to song. He kept the song as is except for adding his voice and the country vibe to it. I considered it as an homage to Tracy. He didn’t play guitar in their performance together letting most of the focus be on her.😢I thought their voices blended well. I liked the unison when they sang together. He speaks so highly of her and you can tell the respect and awe he has for her on stage with her.
It very much looked like he told her to perform and he would keep pace with her. It allowed her to be as natural as possible and he expertly matched her.
This song was written by someone who saw these tragedies around her. She knew these people. She felt the people who hoped in the face of despair, and the despair won. I heard it twice, and I couldn't listen to it. It slayed me, but I never forgot it. It's one of the greatest American songs in history. Luke Combs grew up far away from Tracy's environment. His father played it on the radio when they were driving. He just loved the song. He didn't feel the excruciating pain of it at all, and you hear that absence when he sings it. Then he got to be a country music arena artist, and he recorded it. His star power got it to no. 1 on the country charts, and of course the greatness of the song. To hear the woman who wrote this song out of pain and the man who never felt it, sing together on the same stage was an unbelievable experience.
This performance was one of the highlights of the Grammys. It was amazing to see and hear Tracy Chapman again. I also loved seeing Luke Combs obvious reverence for her as they sang.
My favorite part, apart from Tracy actually performing, was seeing the level of reverence that the eclectic group of artists in the audience were showing, from Taylor Swift to Killer Mike and Jelly Roll. I saw her peform this live in 1989 and this took me right back there, one of my favorite performers of all time. Her humbleness is one the things I admire so much about her.
There's a couple of articles about the way this came together. It took nearly a year and a lot of coordination to pull off. This was the first song Luke learned to play on guitar and it has been his favorite for years. And people win awards for other people's songs all the time. Depends on the award as to who wins it. Tracy won the CMA Song of the Year award as songwriter, while Luke and the song's producer and track engineer won Single of the year for it.
Tracy is one of my all time favourite artists, an incredible lyracist / story teller. I was so excited to see that she was performing. ❤ Thank you to whoever requested this.
Luke Combs caused a stir when he covered this song; when asked why, he simply said it had always been one of his favorite songs. I also thought it was a bit disingenuous that certain people felt it was it was improper for a white county singer to sing a song originally written and sung by a black performer, when TC genre was contemporary folk/ pop, not a genre known to have large black audience. For her part TC was thrilled her music was being heard by a new audience. The beauty of this collaboration was for 5:20 min, "Across the lines...that separates whites from blacks" were temporarily blurred. TC is simply a national treasure and it was wonderful seeing her smiling and performing again.
They both won awards for his cover. She won Song of the Year (writer) at Country music awards making her the only black female solo country writer to win the award. He won Performance of the Year with the song. She has publishing and songwriter credits so she is getting royalties from his song.
Thanks to whoever requested this. This song use to help me calm down when I was a little girl. She's still so beautiful. Enjoyed your reaction and researc. I had no clue who Luke was.🤍
I love that their collaboration so effectively squashes all the manufactures controvery over Luke cutting the song. They both spoke out on the discussion but performing together really pushes back on all the critics.
Luke won the single of the year for his cover at the acm's last year. It also won song of the year. Tracy took home that award as she was the song writer for it.
Why don’t you all do your research before you start commenting it is so frustrating. That people get on here and don’t do the work because you would know that he loved this song from a child and it was one of his favorite songs he sang with his dad, and that Tracy Chaplin was fully on board for him to record this song, and he is not the only person that have recorded this song over the years, he gave her mad respect and honored by bringing her on the stage and letting her sing her song that he loves. Not only that people went back and now her original is number one and she won the Grammy for that song when it first came out and again in this season, so please do your homework if you’re gonna come on here and call yourself a content creator.
Well said. The way I look at it there will always be critics but I just ignore them. Life is too short to worry about such things. I prefer to just enjoy the beautiful moments like this and enjoy watching others enjoy them. That's actually the whole appeal of reaction videos--we love to see other people enjoying the same things we do.
Tracy owns all the publishings!!!(title, words, music etc!) so yes she gets paid off it n she gets all accolades associated with the song!smart move in the 80s💯
Because of this her music has now been introduced to a few more generations of people. She's a wonderful talent and song writer. They said because of this cover Chapman has made in excess of 500k with more coming.
Be won for performance of it. She got credit for the writing. She technically now had a #1 sing on the country charts, even though she's personally never put out a country album.
And he didn’t change the lyric, checkout girl, to boy which would give him co-writing credit. He said no out of respect , she also gets all financial for writing
They just sang the song. They could have added harmony and changed it, they didn't. They sang in unison which I wish we as a country could do. For one moment we were all in unison
Luke Combs. Probably the biggest Country star out now beside maybe Morgan Wallen or Chris Stapleton. And yes a cover of Tracy Chapman's Fast Car. Absolutely great performance and did NO discredit to her. Sang the song the original way she sang it. This must have been a huge life goal for him, and he will go down as one of the greats.
His cover was really well done. This was a great performance. I am sure Stapleton has won awards for Tennessee Whiskey which was a cover. Just as an example
He’s never won an award for Tennessee Whisky, although it’s a track on his album Traveller that won album of the year at the Grammy, CMA, ACM his 10 Grammys are for songs he has co-written
He worshiped her growing up. It made him want to play. He use to play it at his concerts. He always played it exactly as she requested and when he was asked to the Oscars he wanted her there. I cried seeing her. I called it when Luke made Tracey Smile again… and rich again cause everyone downloaded her songs and videos again ❤
German guy here, I grew up listening to this and other of Tracy's songs a lot. They helped me grow up and turn into the man I am today. And now that grown big man got a few tears in his eyes..
I feel like this song is so special that it needs no collaboration. I honestly don't think he brought "more" to the song. He has a nice voice and all, but i think it much more beautiful, special, and magical, when Tracy sings it solo. So much love and respect for Tracy Chapman.
This is the biggest country song of the year, and Tracy won best country music writer for it. It's a 1st for a black woman to win this award. Luke's version made a huge splash, although he just wanted to throw it on his album because the song meant a lot to him when he was a kid, so he just wanted to show love. My favorite part of this is Killer Mike going crazy singing along, lol. You can trun the volume up like everyone else that oistened to it, by the way.
She know has a #1 hit on the country music charts a CMT award and another Grammy for fast car. She probably got close to a million dollars in royalties in the last couple of months from her song.
"How does that work" He wins the award for his performance of the song. And he's paying royalties to her. Given how much he loves the song and her music, I'd suspect he asked before doing it. The song sounds hopeful, but you really listen to the lyrics there is a deep sadness to it. And the fact it starts "We gotta make a decision" and changes to "YOU gotta make a decision, leave or die this way"
This song was such a huge hit for Tracy Chapman and the album it was on won her a Grammy (one of four). I've loved the song since it first came out, I think in 89 or 90. Luke's cover of the song has become a huge country hit. I didn't actually know that, either, until the Grammys, since I rarely hear any country music. He sounds great on the duet, though, so I bet it was a good cover!
She gets the songwriting credits, and he still gets the performance and cover arrangement. Just like when Disturbed won awards for The Sound of Silence.
I absolutely love Tracy Chapman! I was on RUclips and saw Luke Combs singing this song, After watching it I commented how wonderful it would be to see them prform together, and the Grammys made it Happen. And by the way, Tracy won song writer of the year at the CMA's
Luke combs dad introduces him to this song years ago as a young boy. And loved this song since. The album “gettin old” he wanted to cover this song. That’s what was told in the back story at the Grammys
Like Combs loves the song he called and asked Tracey if he could sing her song and put it on his album she said yes, he made hundreds of millions from that song and he asked her to be at this awards show and they sung a duet
Very few artists win awards for songs they wrote. Most are covers or written by someone else. I liked the song when it came out originally and liked Luke’s cover. The look of joy on Tracy’s face was the best part.
This was recorded on someones tv im pretty sure. Luke covered the song, and he got her to perform it with him at the grammys. She hasnt performed live since like 2009 i think .
He took a lot of flack for recording her song because he was white, a man and a country artist. People tried to make it political and obviously Tracy Chapman approved. She is making a lot of royalties because he re released, just like Dolly does from Whitney covering her song. In a world full of Taylor Swifts and Beyonces we need more Tracy Chapmans. She just proved she doesnt need fancy stage shows, designer gowns, millions of dollars in jewelry or auto tune to outshine every damn person in that auditorium. Luke Combs knew he was in rhe presence of greatness and everyone watching knew they were too. This song is from my college days and I love everything about it then and now
Because of the popularity of his very true cover Tracy is now the first POC and GSM to receive a country music song of the year award. And her album/song also recharted this year.
Audio wasnt too bad.Ms.Chapman won a CMA award this year from Mr.Combs version of it.First African American to do so at the CMAs. Loved MrLBoyd smiling!
What an iconic song! So glad to see this. About how awards work. It depends upon the award. If it is a performance award, then that goes to the singer. Luke was nominated for best country solo performance for Fast Car but he did not win. Had it been nominated for best song, that is a songwriting award. If Luke’s version had won, the award would have gone to Tracy, the original songwriter. This song of course has won Tracy 3 Grammys and nominated for Song of the year, record of the year, album of the year, it’s one of the greats. Another example off the top of my head would be the country song Better Man by Little Big Town. They won Best Country group Performance for their version of the song. But they didn’t write the song, Taylor Swift did. So Little Big Town’s version was also nominated for Best Country Song, which is a songwriters award, so it was Taylor’s nomination. Classic song. Their version phenomenal, Grammy winning. But I prefer Taylor’s Version of the song.
apparently when Luke was growing up, his dad had this old truck with a broken radio. the only thing its could do was play the tape that was stuck in it. Just so happens that it was a tracy chapman tape. so for years growing up, this is the only music that was always playing in the truck
ela senpre foi radiante e senpre serar eu amo a tracy e inprecionante paresse que ela ainda esta nos anos 80 continua jovem e linda parabems que sua saude e sua vida seja muito longa 🌹
Luke insisted with his label that all profit from his cover went to Tracy. She's collected more than a half million $, so go Colmbs. Yay Tracy, song still kicks ass.
Who gets the award depends on whether the category is rewarding the song itself or the vocal performance on it. For example, "song of the year" goes to whoever wrote it. "Best vocal performance" goes to the singer.
So the backstory is Luke Combs loved Tracey Chapman and sung Fast Car his all life before he made the album with Fast Car on it he called his agent and his agent got in touch with Tracey Chapman and he asked her if she would do him the honor of letting him sing her song his favorite song of all time and she said yes!! And he has won awards but he said in several interviews his greatest achievement was singing Fast Car with his idol Tracey Chapman
I feel hopeful when artists from different genres and generations respect each other’s music. Would love to hear your reaction to Beyoncé’s new cover of the Beatles’ Blackbird.
Luke was nominated for country song for fast car at this year’s Grammys, he didn’t win Chris Stapleton did for White horse. Doin this is my favourite Luke Combs song
If you study about Tracy she’s a very introverted person and she would have definitely had to give him permission to do it. Nicky M wanted to use one of her songs and she said no, then she used it anyway and got sued for 1/2 million $$$$
Can we talk about how exquisitely beautiful Tracy still is? Absolutely radiant. She has such a presence.
She looks more beautiful now then she did she did when this song first came out! That smile in the beginning was everything :)

Awesome reaction, simply red " holding back the years" is also a must, kaleo, Teddy Swims, George Michael..the list goes and goes
Taking care of an alcoholic father only to get married to a man jus like the father! Wow! Powerful song!
She won the CMA for Songwriter of the Year...in 2023. She definitely got the awards for the song, and well deserved.
Great!
What I heard was he loved the song and ask Tracy for permission to record it.
He made her a million dollars on this song...he did alright too.
It's Tracey's song, Luke just brought it back into the limelight.
I feel hopeful when artists from different genres and generations respect each other’s music. Would love to hear your reaction to Beyoncé’s new cover of the Beatles’ Blackbird.
Because he covered it and it made it to no 1
"The song always felt super hopeful to me"
yeah just mix in a bunch of not being able to replicate your hope.
You can win for the performance not writing it. It’s a beautiful colab here.
Hopeless and hopeful. That's always how this song made me feel.
I always felt as if the narrator never REALLY thought he/ she would be someone.
She was sending the father of her children off to go and live his life, the way she had dreamed of doing when she was younger.
@@kathrynburleson420 Thanks. I'm 71 and think I'm losing some of my hearing.
It already won awards lol he ain't the genius ❤ it was so nice to hear her voice ❤️
Luke was nominated for country song for fast car at this year’s Grammys, he didn’t win Chris Stapleton did for White horse. Doin this is my favourite Luke Combs song
Hopeful?!! 😂 the song is depressing as hell. It’s about wanting to get out and still being stuck in the same cycle despite your dreams and efforts.
Easy to hear you...very hard to hear Tracy/Luke performing this.
Dolly Parton wrote and performed I will always love you and then Whitney redid it and won awards off of it
Where the wild things are - luke combs.
Great that you have you commentary, but I hardly hear the song and music
The only reason that they did this is simply because he loves this song and got to work with her! There is no better reason then that!
If you study about Tracy she’s a very introverted person and she would have definitely had to give him permission to do it. Nicky M wanted to use one of her songs and she said no, then she used it anyway and got sued for 1/2 million $$$$
"hopeful, not hopeful" exactly it... Joyful tragedy.....
Try “Beautiful crazy” by Luke Combs. And “Hurricane” was his first hit.
Why are you so I've always loved Tracy look at my phone
