Time to do this again in getting ready for the upcoming spring fishing season! Going to go through, replace the lower unit oil, spark plugs, and check the plug wires..... This video was super, and has become almost religion...
Yup, you gotta check all that stuff every spring. Don't forget to check any fuel filters too. Haha you are right. Maintainance is like a religion.

Problem with 2003 Merc 125 2-stroke. Old fuel lines destroyed by ethanol. Found lots of brown chunks inside the pump. Rebuilt pump with Merc kit. Replaced all fuel lines. Replaced internal inline filter. Added secondary in-line glass filter outside of engine so I can see it's getting fuel. Removed carb tree, opened every bowl and checked for debris (almost none there) sprayed all jets with carb cleaner. Did *not* fool with the metering adjust screws! Plugs fairly new. Removed all old gas. Put in 2 gallons of new ethanol-free gas treated with STABIL.
Symptom: when cold, starts and idles good. Runs rough getting up to plane about 3K. I tried disconnecting one plug wire at at time, then running it. Seems like #4 is not firing good. Ran it a while on lake.
Shut off, won't restart.
I see fuel in the clear filter. Will check the spark tomorrow. Thank you.
You did good replacing all the old fuel lines and filters. I did that on this engine too. Keep in mind, the outboard you are working on is much newer and built much different than this old Evinrude.
I've been using Mercury Powertune as well. While they both seem to work well, I prefer Mercury products since they are backed by the OEM. Crazy how much this helps with hole shots and rough idling. It was actually recommended to me by a marine mechanic. I thought my carbs needed rebuilt and he told me to try this stuff. Saved me a few hundred bucks, easy.
+JAY TV Yea, it works amazingly. That's why I made this video. To show people how easy it is to seafoam an outboard. I know Mercury, Evinrude, and Yamaha all have their "Engine Tuner" fuel additives. Good to know that the Mercury one works well!
Just did something similar with 1 bottle seafoam to 1/2 gallon of gas. I had a 9.8 hp Evinrude 4 stroke that I had been trolling with and not running wide open enough due to this motor being a kicker motor. It started stalling out below 2.3 mph where I needed to be at. When running the seafoam the motor had excessive exhaust which cleaned up after about 10 minutes of high idle then it would troll down without stalling.....The marinas around here are backed up 2-3 weeks due to spring and the walleyes biting. This saved me money and valuable time. I think I paid $ 12.73 for the bottle at the auto part store.
That's awesome! Seafoam works great for sure. I'm glad it fixed your problem. No one likes paying crazy marina prices and then having to wait for them to fix your boat when you can do it yourself!
I have the same Engine but it's Tohatsu , My question is the engine is only one year old. Do I need this treatment on the new engine?
It's not going to do much on a new engine. You can put some in the gas tank if you want.
The life of any out board motor. I’m still running a 1986 40 horsepower Johnson that came on my 18’ Alumacraft, it still has 130 psi on both cylinders and they hold pressure. When it gets time to go fishing again you know it going to run like it should.

I didn't notice a ton of carbon wash out, the engine seems to be a bit better on the hole shot for lack of a better word. Also of note I went through and replaced all the fuel lines before and after the filter...
Thanks for the update. I noticed a really improved idle. You were smart for replacing all of the fuel lines.
In the 60s and 70s OMC sold a product called Engine Cleaner. that stuff was good, far better than the stuff marketed today. I think the old stuff was pure Carbon Tetrachloride, nasty stuff, but it worked well

Really appreciate you mentioning the smoke! Used Seafoam when I cranked a 1987 Honda 4 stroke for the first time in years. The amount of smoke had me nervous and thus searching RUclips. I also found the tell-tale ejecting hot steamy water like a jet. Think it's the same reason?
No problem! Yea it smokes ALOT everytime you Seafoam anything. Have you checked you're water pump impeller lately? Sounds like you might need a new one. They say to replace them every 1-2 years depending on use. As long as you have a good hot stream of water coming out of the tell-tale you should be in pretty good shape. However, it's a good idea to visually inspect the water pump impeller every so often. They are rubber and do wear out over time!

Yes, this method is much better. If you just dump the can in your tank it dilutes it too much. This is a really popular method on the internet and works extremely well. All of the 2stroke outboards I have done this to immediately run better. Their idle improves to the point that the run like completely different motors, no exaggeration. great vid, but just a quick note..if you disconnect the fuel to the motor and pump a gallon of gas from the tank into a gas can you dont have to bother with mixing up 1 gallon, nice boat btw😎👍

To make this process much easier as much gas as these things guzzle just add the can of seafoam to your gas tank & take it out on the water and run it. I use Seafoam in my truck,bike,lawnmowers but just a can per 5 or 6 gallons of gas works wonders to keep the carbs & injectors cleaned. Also a big fan of Marvel's Mystery Oil for an upper cylinder lubricant.
Yea that will keep your outboard running well. However, this is a SHOCK treatment designed to un-stick cylinder rings and attempt to clear out any carbon that has built up over 30+ years. Kinda two different purposes.
Hi Matt, great video thank you. Just a quick question: I was all ready to do this treatment on my 28 year old Force 90 outboard but thought I'd do a compression test first. The compression on all 3 cylinders is incredibly good, right up at spec with literally only 1 Psi between them all. The engine runs fine generally but I wanted to do the treatment purely because of its age. My question is do I really need to do the shock treatment when the compression is so good? The tops of the pistons looked nice and clean too.
You don't have to do it, but it will help. My Force 85 HP runs WAY better after I did this to it and it has good compression. It changed the way it behaves and made it run much smoother. Give it a try and don't forget to add the 2-Stroke oil in the mix.

It's the first time I've commented on a youtube vid :-) I did do it but I honestly don't think it made any difference, the thing is, I'd underestimated my motor. I had naturally presumed, as it is 28 years old, that it would be on its last legs, despite the fact that it runs well. Before I did the seafoam treatment (I did it because I'd already bought it!) I decided to take the carbs off to strip and clean them, to my surprise their wasn't the slightest trace of carbon, varnish...nothing, they were like brand new, literally like new! I had a good look in through the spark plug hole and the tops of the pistons were the same; immaculate, as was the reed block through the carb inlet, the fuel filter too was like new. Basically, I've struck gold, it's either been completely rebuilt (which I doubt because the gaskets fell to bits, were hard and brittle) or it's just done barely any hours at all since new. It looks like I'm the beneficiary of a boat that someone bought and never used. Anyway, thanks for the video and I'm sure it'll come in handy one day :-)
I have a 99 Yamaha 2 stroke with the precision blend. Do I still need to premix in the aux tank?

Once at the beginning of every growing season. No, just mix up a gallon and run it all.
My 1973 evinrude 50hp won't stay running do you think seafoam would help it
great video man I have a 1981 johnson 70 hp 2 stroke we took it out to lake today it idled fine but when we throttled it down it wanted to stall or bog down do you think seafoam could help plus the primer ball never got hard thanks
Seafoam is definitely going to make it run smoother, but it might not fix the problem. Did it go wide open? I'd check the fuel pump diaphragm if your motor was before the VRO oil injector fuel pump combo. You could have a dirty carb too. I'd still do the Seafoam though.

Yea, Seafoam can make a huge difference for sure. If you've changed the fuel pump it sounds like you got a problem elsewhere.

I have a 225 Yamaha 2 stroke it idles kind of rough and when I put it into gear it shuts off.. would this fix my problem?
It can help a rough idle.

We have a mercury force 90hp outboard motor and it isn't running on the middle/2nd cylinder we pulled all 3 plugs and top had some oil on it and the bottom did to but the middle did not it actually looked the same as it did when I cleaned it any ideas of why that cylinder ain't working and the other 2 are?? I'm checking for spark on that cylinder tommarow as well! Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated, thanks matt!
Did you check the carb that provides fuel to the middle cylinder? Maybe some of the carb orifices are clogged and it's not getting enough fuel/oil mix.
@@MattsShop I did take the carb off put it in seafoam it removed a lot of debris and then I used a needle to poke in the jets in they were clear I hope any other ideas

It works on all outboards! Just gotta figure out how to get the gas/seafoam mix into the engine on the newer outboards.
Have you ever looked at the carbon deposits in a before and after? Sorry to say I have done that and saw very little difference. ( I used a 2 stroke and 4 stroke lawnmower and a bore scope ) and found very very little carbon removed.
Yea, I have seen the videos of before and afters. It did something and ran like a completely different motor after this. The idle was much better and it ran much smoother. I never tell people to use these chemical "quick fixes", but on an outboard it defiantly seems to help big time.
I don't know why. Maybe because it removes carbon from the rings and since an outboard is such a large 2 stroke motor it makes a much bigger difference than a chainsaw. Although, you can't really see it visually?
Outboard motors I can not comment about. BUT I can only comment on what I have seen first hand. I even had someone tell me " See its working!! Look at the smoke " I then filled a brand new lawnmower and yes it smoked like a mofo. Contacting seafoam proved just as futile.. The placebo effect is what they count on.
Rockjock007 Yea, for outboards it really works well. That's what it was originally made for SEAfoam. It was designed back when they would use regular motor oil in 2 strokes before they had all the oil technology they had today, or at least that's how the story goes. Carbon builds around the rings and causes them to stick and can cause engine failure. Especially on outboards because they are so old 30+ yrs. Everything else I have used it on I haven't really seen much improvement. On an outboard it is night and day believe it or not.

Cody B Good quesion! If it was me, I would just make sure the oil tank is topped off with oil and run it like normal. Just put 1 can of seafoam in .75-1 gallon of gas like I did in this video. No need to run double the amount of oil if it's already oil injected!
I won’t hurt nuthing ! Mix some oil in gas to be safe!
Matt I've got a 1988 120V4 Looper similar motor, it's been running great. Just last weekend started losing power once on a plane at say 4000RPM just bogs down. Stop then runs for a bit and does the same thing again. Runs perfect at say 2500RPM got me home anyway.
Do you think this might help that problem?
I would defiantly do this to start out. It sounds like you might have a fuel issue. Check all of the hoses, clamps, and carb mounting bolts. Make sure there are no fuel/air leaks ANYWHERE. Have you cleaned/rebuilt the carbs lately? I would also check the fuel pump to make sure that it is working correctly.
is that actually carbon burning off that makes the smoke or is that the seafoam product burning and creating the smoke

You need 2.56 Oz of oil per gallon. You need a 50:1 ratio of TC-W3 marine oil. It's better to get some out of the tank, but I guess you don't premix?

I have an 80’s mercury and it’s not an outboard will that work and I have a problem where I put the throttle all the way down and it revvs up a lot but it doesn’t go fast would this fix it??
Sounds like you have some broken parts or improperly adjusted linkages. This will not really fix a broken motor. It just helps tune it up, clean out the carbon, clean the carbs a little, and make sure the rings aren't sticking. Pretty much just good maintenance. Feel free to try it though.

I use Boats.net pretty sure that outboard has "fixed" jets you don't remove. My Evinrude 140 does.

Runs great in a bucket, but haven't put on lake yet to put it under load. I checked compression also and I'm at 100 psi on each cylinder, so I think I'm good there. So you think if it still does it, check fuel pump diaphragm next? Thanks bro for helping and any more advice! Oh..also fuel system is good, just coming from 5 gal can to ball and into motor. Been a big fan of doing this on all kinds of motors for years. Plan on changing the spark plug(s) when you are done, because blowing all this crap out of the fuel/combustion system tends to wreck 'em.
Also -- Obligatory tree-hugger comment --- Please don't do this on the lake or at the dock...all that crap getting pumped in the water is bad, mm'kay?
Do it at home where you can better contain the spill and runoff.

Sorry, really dumb question here. I can't the motor idoling and the fuel bulb won't retain fuel after little bit. It's a brand new fuel bulb. I feel like this is something extremely simple I am missing.

I'm surprised it stayed running with the primer bulb horizontal like that.
Doesn't matter once you get 'er goin.
The primer is just that, a primer, to fill the bowl for starting. Once running the engines fuel pump does the work, the bulb has no bearing on operation.
What year outboard is that? Does it have oil injection or do you premix?
It is a 1986 Evinrude 150XP. It does have a VRO oil injection pump, but it is disabled. I run premixed gas in it.
I have a question, I have a vro system still intact on my Johnson 130, will the vro still push oil when the gas line is disconnected?
I do not remember exactly as mine is disconnected and I run pre-mixed gas. Yours is still hooked up and working right?

This is all good to clean the idle circuit. But if you don't rap the throttle the seafoam will not reach the rest of the carb.
+David Jessee Great point! The reason I was doing this is to clean out the carbon in the motor. You are right, if you are wanting to clean out the carb you should hit the throttle a little bit.

Nahh, it was orginally made for old 2-Stroke outboards. Hence the name, Seafoam. You're good!
Sea foam is good for all 2-4-6-8- cycle engines
I have a 1998 Force 120. It is not running with all of its power. When alone its runs great, but when I have 1 or 2 guest, it has a HARD time planning. Also has a lot of trouble idling. Will this help me? Mechanics are weeks backed up.
+Brandon Freeman Yes! That is a Mercury Force and a pretty good motor. This is the best place to start. You should check your fuel pump diaphram. It is probably old and hard. It is just a thin piece of rubber and easy to replace if your motor is pretty corrosion free.
The whole fuel pump assy was replaced along with the fuel line and primer bulb. It is pushing a 1998 Wellcraft 190cc center console ( a pretty heavy boat) but I've seen vides online of it pushing big boats at comfortable speeds. I will do this process in morning, I really hope it helps. Thanks for your speedy response!!
+Brandon Freeman That's good it was replaced so you can rule that out. I am familliar with that exact boat. They are real nice and well built, but they are HEAVY you are right. Do this first and then check the compression of the cylinders to make sure it is in good shape internally.
What are the specs of your prop? If you have a high pitched prop like a 21 pitch prop this would explain the lack of torque.

Hey i got a question I got a 85 it works great out of the water on muffs but in the water it’s like it doesn’t go in to gear it does out of the water In the water it won’t acelarate
Does the prop spin when in the water? If it doesn't spin, something is wrong with the linkages. If it has trouble accelerating, it's probably the fuel pump diaphram!

my motor has an oiler but it' 2 stroke. Do i still pre mix or just use reg gas and let the oiler do it's thing
Don't mess with the oiler. Just run it how you always would. That would be double oil

Dumb question...why do you add the additional (black) hose? Cant you just disconnect the line from the tank instead of the fuel bulb/pump where you add the black hose? And then stick that same original gas line into the gas tank?

+Sal Palos That's not a dumb question at all. I just used a different piece of hose because I didn't feel like disconnecting the tank's fuel line because it is hard to get to.
You can just disconnect your tank's fuel line and stick it into the seafoam/gas can if that's the easiest way for you to do it.

Probably not. The best way to clean carburetor jets is to take them apart and manually clean them. The chemical cleaners suck.
I think it does do the high speed jets, just gotta throttle up a few times during the run, get all the juice up in here...

Yes! It will work for almost any outboard, especially older outboards.

No! It will not hurt your motor. Don't worry about it. Just mix the gas up using the same ratio of oil you always use.

I added just a little extra oil to my gallon to compensate for the volume of the Sea Foam. Whether I needed to or not, I don't know, but I felt better doing it.

It's just gunk coming out of your motor. Some people see this and some do not. It's a good thing!
Unless it smells like rotten eggs. Then it is lower unit oil lol.
