- The time has come. God Hand, one of the best PS2 video games of all time. Clover Studio, one of the most notorious developers of the time. Probably my most wanted Nintendo Switch Port. Like actually, come on Capcom.
After years of 3.0 jokes and people thinking I'm dogging on it, I present to you God Hand and Clover Studio VS The Internet. At least in my mind, the most self important thing I've created here. A Review and Retrospective of God Hand and Clover Studio and the importance of Platinum Games.

Masafumi Takada is the greatest, easily one of my favorite composers.
I'm not sure why you put the "Yes really" there, since God Hand -> No More Heroes -> Danganronpa sounds like an extremely rational career path.
i hope God Hand gets a spiritual successor made by Platinum.
Asura's wrath almost was supposed to be God hand Successor but Capcom requested it to be more "Casual friendly"

If I recall correctly, the side of Clover that made God hand, or at least the head of its development, did not partake in the split to Platinum. So without a degree of collaboration we may not see a true successor.

Another fun fact. Gene was meant to be in MvC3 instead of Okami
Its baffling how Okami gets like a ton of re-releases and yet God Hand still gets left in the dust.

You claim all these things are the reason why we haven’t gotten a remake God Hand, right? Well it doesn’t seem that they’ve had any impact on any of those other game, have they? Okami just got rereleased, there are still Fire Emblem games coming out, Catherine got a deluxe edition for PS4. Seems your “proof” falls a bit flat there bucko.

No one, in any real capacity, has mentioned jack shit of adding LGBTQ units in FE. No, a small group of people =/= the entire fanbase nor does it equal a majority. On top of that the only gay coupling I can even think is in fates, and it's just one. OH NO ONE PERSON THATS GAY with a series known for...what? 100+ characters at this point? On top of that me looking around post Awakening and pre-release of fates I'm not seeing this large movement of fans advocating for more gay character.
If anything it seems the division is less waifu emblem and more fire emblem. IE better written characters vs anime tropes.
That being said. In regards to Catherine: Full Body. yeah if the leaked ending is true there are alot of reasons why people who ID as LBGTQ would dislike and want them to reconsider it.. I wont spoil it here but if you read on that ending it does point to something weird. So its not really shocking in that regard.
Also I wouldn't really listen to someone who can't even spell 'censored' correctly. Your post reads like fear mongering of 'they're gonna take muh games'. I also want to point out you're super pathetic for getting so mad about light covering someone's ass, and that's you're threshold for censorship. (While at the same time demonizing Nintendo/Intelligent systems for putting in a character that is gay, without any real coordinated threat or outcry from the FE community...almost as if they wanted to put that character in).

Reminds me of their "God Hand Super Guide" (a paid guide I accessed for free trough the account of another guy)
The guide claimed that almost all enemies where easy and consisted of a very basic "approach and hit them until they drop A.I"and that you only needed to knock them over and then stomp them until they died with notes such as "ALWAYS stomp all foes! Even bosses!"
Considering that the bad guys in the game have a pretty complex A.I and "knocking them over" rarely works, while stomping them is literally one of the most useless moves in the game, I doubt those idiots even played the game at all and rather decided to assume it was a generic beat em up like Final Fight

Never heard of God Hand, but now i'm more than informed. Your Video-/Soundquality is pro and the structure and text of the review is well made, so that it's fun to watch and time flies while i'm getting some laughs in aswell. What i'm just trying to say here is: you deserve more views man!

After years of searching I finally found this game at my retro games store, awful box art and all. Cost me 50 bucks but totally worth it!
What really bugs me is that Fisticuffs/Spartan Rage from God of War '18 is basically God Hand with good controls.

Agreed. Heard "rubber banding", and was like "Isn't that when your character shoots you to a few seconds back of where you were due to lag?".
@@PigeonSquawks as far as I know rubber banding refers to racing games on which the CPU opponents actually get a higher speed cap when you're on the lead, as if you were tied to them with a rubber band

God Hand always felt to me like I was playing an hilarious battle shonen anime, and I really want a remake with a bit less jank in the controls department.
The controls are perfect for the type of game it is. They really wanted you to focus in one enemy at a time. If you need to act quickly, just use the dodge to move.

God Hand is my favourite game of all time. It's also been a large factor in my manual dexterity disability! Gotta love those misspent teenage years on KMS runs without realising your joints all go in the wrong direction and that the hurting means 'stop'. D'oh.
Funnily enough, I've been on the 'please be kind and thoughtful of disabled gamers, accessibility options won't detract fro your game' side of the fence surrounding Sekiro and have been working my way through it with an adapted controller, albeit slower than some! I'd love to go back to my favourite title ever, but with my condition degenerating, it is likely that I never will.
Luckily, Platinum are THE leader for accessible games these days! Having a single button control scheme and extensive auto modes has meant everything to me and means I can still play the games in the genre I love the most, by the developer I love the most.
Thank you for the thoughtful, passionate video. Really glad to see somebody carrying the torch for Shinji Mikami's masterpiece and passing on its oral history. ❤︎

Also, did you ever play Final Fight: Streetwise? Delightfully terrible, pure camp. 10/10, highly recommended utter nonsense. Think you may find it a fun rabbit hole to fall down!
I can't really blame IGN for Clover's closing when Clover couldn't even sell games with good reviews (IGN included) and a game of the year endorsement.

In a recent interview, Shinji Mikami shed some light on this game development. This was a personal project for him. He literally took Capcoms money and made a game that he wanted without worrying about sales or anything. And they made it in just 1 year! I love this game and Mikami is my favorite game Director. He is just so stubborn with his designs hahaha. Amazing video Austin, I always come back to it.
Oh god, hands down one of those hidden gems of a game. I remember back when my brother, my cousin and I would go into our local Electronic Boutique games store and seeing this game sitting around on the shelf for the longest time ever. I will admit that we did not pay two shits about it because the cover art of the game looked rather bland, had no flare and we just shrugged it off like a crappy 3rd party generic beat'em up game. Little did we know, it was quite the grave mistake we made.
Fast-forward a bit till we picked up Okami, playing it, finished it and fallen deeply in love with it. Thats when we decided to try and find more games made by Clover Studios. Looked up to only find a few games: Viewtiful Joe plus its sequel and God Hand.. then it all came back to us. We're like: Oh really? This game with the cover art?
I then proceeded to watch the trailers & its ending for God Hand and instantly fall in love with all its corniness. The very next day we went to go pick it up and played it until we beat it. No joke the game was indeed hard along with its tank-like controls of the 'over the shoulder' 3rd person view which had some getting use to but we pressed on because it was just so fun. Eventually we finished it and watched the ending in person. It was Glorious!
Watching my brother beat this game and seeing that ending credits song, unspoiled, for the first time is up there in my all time favorite gaming moments.

I actually picked this up because X-play gave this a 4 out of a 5 back in the day when g4 was a thing i was 13 and ive been that age ever since!
You know, for a short while, I remember people theorizing Gene was going to be in DMC5, based on the artwork that had been released (mainly the sleeveless coat V is wearing) since we didn't know who V even was at that point.

The song during the end credits of God Hand is absolutely one of the *best* I've ever heard in a game (and hilarious too). To anyone reading this, I'll say you should play through the game and earn the end credits yourself, buuut... at least look it up on RUclips if you haven't heard it and can't fight through to finish the game.

I think there's also a discussion to be had about the concept of a review being "wrong", as well as the notion that it's ok to knock a game for being too easy but not for being too difficult.

Ya, reviews can't be "wrong" as they're opinions, but opinions can bill Ill informed. I don't see anything wrong with knocking points off for a game being too hard, especially if the audience they have cultivated does not typically consume difficult games. It's the same with linear games being a bad thing, why? Why is linear story telling a bad thing?
If I had to make a list of the best action games of all time, God Hand would be right up there with DMC3, DMC5, and Bayonetta
About that not packing much heat line, I think that's a nod to the fact that if you try the Ball Buster on Mr. Silver, it won't work.

I remembered I laugh so hard while playing God Hands. I do find it hard but not toward the controller because PS2 era they have that Anna game and Monster Hunter that uses analog stick to attack so it doesn't troubled me to an extend.
Can we just get a God Hand remastered please Capcom?

Watching you stream this game was probably the most fun I've had in a while. I was skeptical at first, but after a while, I came to really enjoy this game. I've been looking forward to this video ever since that final stream, and while it was disappointing that it couldn't be out on March 10th like you'd said on stream, I think it was well worth the wait. Keep up the good work, man!

Austin, I'd like to give you a huge thank you for introducing me to this game. God Hand has become one of my all-time favorite games, and I wouldn't have tried it out if it wasn't for watching your video. As a whole, I'd like to think you contributed to me discovering how great Clover Studios was as a company, and by extension, Platinum. A true gem, that team.
This and Tekken were the games of my childhood. Gave me the power to press things really fast. Also, the casino in this game and the chihuahua race were amazing.

This honestly is my favorite ps2 game next to GT4 and it makes me so proud to see you and all the other people in the comments sing praises. Praying for sequel or port, but it will always live in my heart.

So there you go. The adaptive difficulty is inherently an easy and hard mode. It modifies the challenge level to allow a broader audience to enjoy the game.
The complaints going around are regarding games that purposefully make themselves hard enough that the majority of people who play video games won't even be able to complete them. Asking for additional options or difficulty levels to assist with that isn't people whining, it is to allow the majority of people to play.
Unless the developers are directly saying they want a minimum of people to buy their game.

God Hand is one of my favorite video games of all time. The gameplay alone is so difficult but very rewarding when you get the hang of it. It would be awesome if Capcom would maybe do a God Hand remake using the RE engine
oh man I can't believe it is actually frickin here and unlike most things that have this amount of hype this actually lives up to it what a great video I mean it this is up there with the Bouncer video and that thing is like a magnum opus so props to you for finally releasing this and it being so good it oozes passion and that is something that we all will always need in life

That theme song nearly caused me to explode with nostalgia. Classic game, classic console.
I remember renting this game from Blockbuster back in like 2007 and thinking it was the coolest thing ever. I only had it for a week, but I got the control scheme down and bout ruined my right wrist trying to beat the second to last boss. BTW, the soundtrack to this game is a gloriously cheesy surf rock disaster and I love it.
I'm still trying to figure out how I beat that game 10 years ago.

Love the video and the amount of research put into it. Another great game from a studio that shut down was Bloody Roar a fighting game where each character had a humanoid animal transformation.
Best part of God Hand is the Ending theme that TOTALLY isn't a rip off of the Mazinger theme.

I was a professional game journalist for 8 years - 1999-2003 at Game Informer, 2003-2007 as freelancer for a variety of outlets.
I took my job seriously; those I worked with did, too. That doesn’t mean there weren’t shitty reviews or controversies. We had tough deadlines and brought our own tastes into things. But I think everyone was doing their best. I personally loved turning people on to games they may have otherwise ignored.
As games evolved past 16-bit, titles became less mass-appeal, general audience games. More games were quirky or got different reactions. It was a good time - post-cartridge, pre-HD.
Since HD became the standard, games are much more expensive and time-consuming to make, so less risks are taken. You have AAA and you have indies. Games like Okami or Viewtiful Joe or Godhand (which I never liked) probably wouldn’t be made, unless by a small independent studio.
Anyway, just wanted to chime in. Thanks to anyone who read this. I still love games!

I still miss EGM. Sometimes they annoyed me (like constantly ragging on Shadow the Hedgehog when they themselves gave it a 5 or 6, which is simply average) but most of the time their reviews were blunt but fair.
Level Die? Wait...in Japan, the number 4 is pronounced the same as “death”, making it an unlucky number. Level Die is the fourth level...so it’s actually a Japanese pun XP

God that small clip from Chaos Legion near the start, I had to start digging through videos to see if it was actually good like I remembered, ended up looking like a slightly subpar DMC with jojo stands lmao.
Godhand isn't only one of my favourites PS2 games, it's one of my favs of all time.
Sure, it got some problems... part of the difficult of the game comes from the too close over the shoulder camera that makes real hard to defend against enemies attacking from behind, and all the jankyness on the lock on system, but if you can get through it Godhand gives you one of the best action oriented game experiences akin to classics like DMC 3 and Bayonetta.
I find funny cause one of my friends worked on the gaming journalism scene back then and he hated not only the score given to Godhand, but he hated even more how many people years later gave it this cult status, even though many of then were responsible for the low scores.
I really wish someday Godhand gets a sequel or a spiritual sucessor, cause it deserves a second take with modern elements with better graphics, camera work and controls. It's difficult system should be more used nowadays, like Resident Evil 4 has shown too.
Austin, only some notes dude:
-Actually increasing the difficult level isn't simply punishing. Enemies also drop better loot on higher levels, and that's the fastest way to get some of the best moves in the game.
-The Midget team are not exactly a direct reference to Viewtiful Joe, but more likely to be a parody of a Super Sentai (aka original japanese Power Rangers). Super Sentai is a tokusatsu, japanese tradicional live action hero tv programs. Other tokusatsu series include Kamen Raider/Masked Raider, that is more likely the inspiration behind Viewtiful Joe (with a mix of Shazam style super family).
God Hand is a beautiful weird piece of art. Games like this is why I love video games. Something like God Hand could not be done in any other medium.
Reviews were the same reason I didn’t pick up “God Hand” back in the day and I’ve always regretted it. (I was in college when it came out and had a pretty limited gaming budget).

Man the more I hear about God Hand, the more Absolver feels like a fusion of it and Dark Souls.. Just way less hard..

Honestly, thanks for making this video. This game is soooo underrated, and was undeservingly badly reviewed because of those jerks at IGN. This game was and still is one of the best games I have ever played. Honestly, better than a lot of Capcom games. The internet and these companies have killed one of my amazing and forever great game God Hand
