Hi everyone, the release date has officially been pushed back one week and will now drop November 14th. However, it is feature locked, so this video should remain accurate :) You can however still download the release candidate which should contain all the 4.0 features here: builder.blender.org/download/daily/
Greatness takes time!
@@RobertJackson-sl1mkthis isn’t a tutorial, it’s a quick 5 minute overview. If you need the nitty gritty go check out the Blender release notes.
Was about to comment this lol, I was so hyped all week only to be disappointed
MY EMOTIONS CANNOT BE TOYED WITH LIKE THIS!
all these new features are cool. im still trying to make a doughnut...
All of this was amazing but for some reason it was the color picker being able to go outside the window that made me cry a tear of happiness.
Roflmao. I came to the comments to say exactly the same thing 🤣
This is the biggest news of the entire video
Simple thing yet has tremendous impact

😮😂😅😊
Didn't even mention the single most exciting improvement - they FINALLY added the ability to quickly select a specific vertex to snap to. I can always tell with Blender users who's also used Maya before and who hasn't, because the former Maya users know why this addition is exciting. Once you have it you'll wonder how you got by for so long without it.
Now we just need the ability to snap to the middle of a face without having to highlight the surrounding vertices with "a" first.
Oh yes, that was always painful. Modeling in Maya was so much easier due to that, lol
HOLY SHIT SERIOUSLY?
I wasn't going to update my Blender at all, but hearing this has made this update ESSENTIAL

Lots of good stuff here. I’m getting into the animation side of things and glad blender is looking into providing better options and way of life for the subject
At the moment, I stick to blender 3.5.1 because that's the latest version of blender that the Anim Aide addon still works in. Once blender includes and Ease-to-Ease slider for the graph editor, I'm peachy.
@@Charely1925 cool. For me this November marks my first year in blender learning about the software and modeling and lighting. And September marks me fully diving into animation which is challenging but fun. Been learning from cg cookie and RUclips :)
@@BrandonBloxBBGood stuff man. Keep up the good work.
The animation and lighting updates are a godsend!!! Cant wait to try out the new pose library feature. Appreciate you putting so much info in such a short video
Color picker update is so cool. So far only substance painter had this advance colour picker.
I believe windows has Api for that, I saw many small software utilize this. Also blender seems to support this on windows build according to the video so probably not yet for Linux and mac.
Substance Designer too! Everyone forgets designer ;-;
and 3dsmax.
Time goes fast!
I was so excited for 2.80 😄
This channel is so underrated. It is wild.
That's kind, thank you
This is so awesome ❤😊
I will definitely download the new version of Blender and I'm so happy that I can support the development of this amazing program ❤😊
There are so much things they could improve that im waiting for, especially for better unwrapping methods, i still need alot of different addons (especially to do environment art for games, creating modular assets)
Id love to export objects more easily and not having to place them at the center of the world to export them, Im using the capsule addon that is amazing for that
What are you looking for them to improve on from a UVing standpoint? Genuinely asking as I am coming from Maya and miss the UV editor in it, I am enjoying everything else with Blender though
They need to improve the outliner ASAP, it should be easier to move/interact with objects.
One question, do you donate? Because a lot of people wants improvements but no ones donates xD
@@nosirve9458i give 3 dollars a month i think
more people should donate to blender so it becomes better!
I'm happy with anything we get from Blender, but I too rely on quite a few add-ons for my game environment work. For the two things you mention, I use Batex for exporting, and UV toolkit 2.0 for easier unwrapping.
Fantastic overview, thanks! I wish there was more on the sculpting side of things, perhaps next update 🤞
hey mw its me
I was just looking last week into methods to make the scenes look more painterly and stumbled across Kuwahara filter with all its variants. I thought it would make for a great project to try to implement it in Blender, but it looks like they beat me to it lol. Funny coincidence, didn’t expect it to appear in the new update at all, can’t wait to try it out tho
One feature that I really would love to see, is global variables. Set for example a color as global variable, and change it at the same time in shaders, composition layers, etc. Not drives, just global variables to be used and reused. Another feature that I'd love to see is to instance shaders inside shaders. I think that it should be really useful!
to “instance” a shader create nodegroup, that you can instance across multiple materials. Might get you a bit closer to this idea
Hi@@vojtaklemperer2997! I know nodegroups, but it's just not the same. Let's see an example. Imagine that you have a material that works as a combination of two materials, lets say wood and grass, and you want to control the amount of one or the other with a color ramp. And you have another object, with wood combined with, I don't know, metal. I want to change the wood in all the materials where it is used, so now I have to change it in two places (the grass+wood and the wood+meta). In other programs (UE for example) you just throw there an instance of the wood material, and if it's changed, it's changed in all the materials where it is used. Of course there are workarounds, but I find it a useful feature to be included straight in Blender.
You can use attributes like global variables in some cases.
@@kartihcus Hi! Yes, in some cases you can use atributes as global variables, and I think that drivers are a solution too. And of course with Python, you can create this kind of parameters to be reused. There are lot of workarounds that can be used, but in my opinion, it's really hard and zero intuitive to use it that way. Having everything together in the world section, for example, should be a far better aproach. Anyway, blender is going forward to a houdini approach, so I'm pretty sure that is only a matter of time to have a solution for this.
3:45 I can't believe this got me so excited ha. Simple fixes like these are great.
I didn't realize B didn't have light linking as yet. I'm looking forward to this update
Oh that color picker tool! New lighting and better colors!! This gonna be amazing. The nodes dont look too messy too oh cant wait this to drop. 😊😊
Damn Blender made a massive jump this time round, so happy to see these improvements, especially on the principled BSDF it looks more user friendly
Where is the sculpting upgrade?
Finally, you can pick colors outside of the Blender window!
Summary:
1. **User Interface and Design Changes:**
- Blender 4.0 features a notch design and a return to a flat background.
- The interface font is updated to "Inter" for improved readability.
- A new asset shelf in the 3D view allows easy access to the asset library without opening a separate editor.
2. **Painting and Wireframe Improvements:**
- Painting modes now have a canvas picker in the 3D view header.
- Wireframe fill in edit mode is now a preference and off by default, enhancing visibility.
- Color of wireframes can now be controlled in all shading modes.
3. **UI and Workflow Enhancements:**
- Improved organization of overlays dropdown and outliner select hierarchy.
- Menus can now be searched, aiding in the new ad modifier menu organization.
- File saving introduces a convenient "save incremental" feature.
4. **Modeling and Geometry Node Updates:**
- A new snapping feature called Snap base is introduced for interactive object/component snapping.
- Geometry nodes see the addition of a repeat zone for looping instructions and marking assets as modifiers/tools.
- New nodes include edge marking in geometry nodes and a points to curves node.
5. **Rendering and Shading Improvements:**
- Principled BSDF gets a full rewrite for increased physical accuracy.
- Cycles rendering includes light and shadow linking, updated color transforms, and a new HDR monitor output (on Mac).
- A new compositing filter node called Kuara adds a stylized painterly effect to renders.
- Blender 4.0 raises the minimum OpenGL version required, drops support for Intel HD 4000 GPUs on Windows, and requires a GPU and macOS version supporting Metal 2.2 for Mac users.
Thank you! Cant wait for V4.0. Wish they make it easier to retime animation though...i.e be able to keyframe NLA strips for scaling speed etc
it seems that blender is just getting better and better
Dude I just started getting into Unreal 5.2, and you're offering this up to me now? The age of indie games is upon us. I'm so excited.
"The age of indie games is upon us."
The last ten years don't count because...?
@@zackakai5173 Putting you antagonism to the side for a second, indie games have never been able to stand up to AAA games in quality. Now they can. That was my point. If it's not obvious why I said that, then you're not a gamedev and the comment wasn't meant for you.
Amazing!! New blender 4.0 I will learns much
I don’t know half the words you said, but it sounds great
wait... you just casually said there is a whole new render engine!?! 👀🤯
Anyone knows if it's possible to roll back to 3.x version of the modifiers tab in v4? The new menu looks absolutely dumb and a waste of time.
The new menu is the only practical way to incorporate geometry node assets as well, which will also be replacing the current modifiers in general in future. There is an addon that reopens the old menu, though.
@@Arjjacks Thanks, will look for it
4.0 Release is pushed back to November 14th unfortunately.
RUclipsrs have been saying "blender 4.0 is here!!" for like years and every time I check, it is in fact not here
I remember being on Blender 2.9 FOREVER.
The release was postponed to November 14
Blender is going to be GOAT.
I wanted to download Blender 4.0 straight away, but it was postponed to November 14, lol...
Awesome, I hope Blender add a Text node shader 🙏 is freaking annoying when you do it manually with vector node and math node.
I like these 5 minute shorties.
You should be SouthernShorty - ba dum ptssss
Nice overview. But no mention of the updated snapping abilities? That is a huge update
Thank you for this update video.
Great summary, but isn't the final release on November 14th? Or they just haven't updated the main page?
Release candidate is scheduled for today, and final release is on 14th
@@bvs1q Thank you for the clarification.
2:02 isn't it the opposite? darker more realistic materials instead of brighter? Because in 3.6 if you add more layers to the material, like transmission or clearcoat, a white material in a white room starts to show more and more it's edges something that should not happen in a real scenario right?
Its both, in different cases: there's light conservation, and light preservation, both have been improved. Christopher 3D (@christopher3d475) has some fantastic videos showcasing all the changes and improvements if you want to know exactly what changed.
blender had a tendency to overbrighten the faces of diffuse materials, and lose light in clear materials, especially rough ones. both were addressed.
Sometimes it was too dark, sometimes it was too light. In your case the improvements would mean making the materials darker when using multiple properties. But in other cases like transmission, it's going to be significantly brighter. I guess its better to say conservation is more _accurate_
Thanks for the info! Love it! 👍👍👍
Where is the link?
epicccc !!!!
I got waaay to excited about the colour picker
I'd be lying if I said I didn't pray for many years that light linking would be added to native blender.
My laptop would probably pull out a knife if I tried to install it, but its nice to see the features thank you
Everyone out here excited for all the new features and settings while I'm out here thinking HECK YEAH COLOR PICKER WORKS OUTSIDE BLENDER
My favorite feature is the color picker
Is it out ?
Which of the two renderers would be better for photorealism, Cycles or Hydra Storm?
hydra is pre visual renderer..so that you can see what other system / program user will see after a import of scene , model etc.
its not a full feature complete,...
its a Mini export / Import View render engine
It's not out yet though
I am here for the color picker outside blender option.
So, Nothing about retopology? 🤔
Always nice to see an update. But I'm just curious as to what the "graph editor" does since in all the tutorials I've seen over the years I have never seen anything like that lol I wonder why
Its kinda funny how on blender with text you can use a hotkey to make the text turn to caps yet on actual text software you have to delete it and rewrite the entire thing XD
Microsoft Word can do that with a button
@@bynkmnoz6891 oh it can? I didnt know that .-.
blender 4 and godot 4
a match made in unity hell.
Still no texture painting layers 🥲🥲
When is 4.0 released?
not matter 4.1 coming. or simple add update on blender so not need hunt numbers
do you have a video on the Game boy
Its a bad day seeing USD Options when Blender is supposed to be OpenSource and free
Is it not?
Dude, I'm still trying to learn 2.8, we are already at 4.0???
Nice, it's not like I know how to even use 70% of this stuff
Hidden in the developer settings is also a new EEVEE Version. Called EEVEE Next ^^.
It features raytracing in EEVEE. 😳
Do you know how to set the scale key back to the way it was before the update? I strongly dislike the new scale feature, as well as the fact that the A key no longer selects/deselects objects with one to two taps. Is there a way I can reset it back to the way it was? 😢
It’s pronounced “Kuwahara”! 😁
hey great video, but did you really have to pronounce voronoi (voh-roh-noi) as (voh-ro-ni)?
ahah i was looking for that comment
Question: Does Blender offer layers in painting mode for hiding colors for working on other colors (traditional painting layers)? For 2D painting, this could be used to hide shadows and highlights to work on base color and such. Thanks.
Unfortunately not. Blender's texture painting is severely underdeveloped. No one's really touched it for years and years now. There is a task manifest up for short and longer term goals but active development is probably still a while away.
Thank you Blender Kurtis Conner 🙏
If you're running an older Mac using Catalina, Blender 4.0 is not supported. But I've barely tapped the resources of the current version, so I'm not complaining.
coo-wah-ha-ra is how its spelled
this seems more like a 3 point something than a 4 point 0
ku_wa_ha_ra
Cap-pi-bara?
for years ive been crying for them to add that exclude effect so i dont have to do fake lighting on anything.
I'm no Japanese speaker, but in a hard-to-pronounce battle I'd put my money on Anisotropic to kick Kuwahara's ass all day.
I can hear you guys aye-nyz-ing and ah-neece-ing already
Veroni and cheese
just add gpu acceleration for path guiding. Its all im asking right now. Without it it is almost pointless. It's much slower on the cpu.
Great update overall though.
That's entirely on Intel, not Blender. It's their API, only they can finish it. That being said, because Open Image Denoise 2.0 requires the SYCL GPU backend to be implemented as well, as soon as GPU Path Guiding is ready, it'll automatically integrate into Blender via the same backend. At least for Intel ARC cards, initially, but should hopefully roll onto other graphic cards too.
3:49 Capybara
Waiting for text geo to be improved compared to C4D
3:47 wait, why? It's 4 very simple syllables? ku-wa-ha-ra. I know people's brains get scared when they see words that don't look like words they don't know, but it's pretty simple sometimes :)
What about 4.1 ?
you can't pronounce Kuwahara? did you take the 6 seconds to Google it?
wow
we're gonna dive right in, to get through all the features in less than 5 min. > playback speed set to .75, lol 🤣
"Blender Memberships" The End of an Erra...
I’m still on 3.1 T.T
👌👌
Blender isn't a software, Blender is a religion.
As sculptor and hard surface modeller, none of those updates are important enough.
I totally dislike that new modifier menu, its just 2 clicks to many now
This doesn't feel like a "4.0" update. No new major feature, just a lot of small changes or backwards design (Principled bsdf is worse, messing up the modifier panel, bone layers obsoleting a lot of rig UIs, default font is now unreadable). Kinda sad that the biggest change in 4.0 is the color picker, a basic feature for any image software. Honestly should've just called this 3.7 and waited for Eevee Next to be the star of 4.0.
there is a lot of changes that breaks backwards compatibility, that is why it is 4.0
POLYCOUNT 😭😭😭
Day 50 of asking random strangers on the street and you tube that when will blender 4.0 come
So in a nutshell, nothing new, just some minor fixes here and there?
Second lol
second is still not first.
@@SouthernShotty Gotta go faster next time XD
First!!
congrats!
Clickbait
It's not really here is it? It's not really here dude.. It's here without selected objects being highlighted . It is broken dude.. Don't upgrade to it people.. it cost me so much in my job.. Massive bug fixes needed before you download it. BEWARE
Light linking will be so useful for manually faking GI on specific objects (I hate using light probes)
I wish they would just implement GI… hope for Eevee Next I suppose
@@tobycat7 Well yeah, that's exactly what Eevee Next will have. SSGI is one of the core functions. Coming 4.1 early March 2024.
FYI light linking is Cycles only, so sadly it won’t help to avoid light probes (assuming you’re talking about Eevee here).
There is already SSGI for Eevee on Gumroad, but unfortunately it based on screenspace and it's not an addon@@tobycat7
Noice 😁
Love Light linking & AGX. I have been having a lot of fun with it over the past month.
Same here!
I really do not like the new modifier menu, it just wastes your time and adds unneeded clicks imo
I don't see why they couldn't have done both...
U can get a modifer addon to keep it the same ui
