It looks like you've got a straw coming out of your head! Jk Great breakdown. It'd be fun to have a case study of lighting for 360° shots (I actually really need that one). How do you hide lights? How do you keep the frame work if you change axis? How do have lights in the shots (practicals, tubes, etc) that actually light the talent without blowing out?
I had a nightmare of a location like this once. Then I realized I was watching some of my earlier stuff. I woke up gasping for air saying "It's all about story..it's all about story"
I love how you gave a shout for Romania, as an indoor location shooting. Most of the locations here are cheap and you usually don't have white walls. It also depends where you shoot because in Bucharest (capital) you will find less cool locations then in the other big cities around the country, and I am saying that living in Bucharest. But a "pro" of the capital it is that we have more studios to shoot in then the other cities. If any of you guys want to shoot there an indoor scene I would pick one of these: Timisoara; Cluj; Brasov; or even Bucharest if you want more of a street urban/modern look.
Hm. As much as I appreciate all the helpful advice, I don't think those rules apply in every situation all the time. Seems to me that the intention with this one was to achieve a compromise between being *CinEmAtiC* and mundane. I think the whole thing was meant to be wholesome and pretty but also relatable. I don't think it would've served the purpose if the whole thing just made you go "OMG that's so beautiful!". After all, it's a an old dude with his dog. He grabs his mouse and does clickyclick. You're supposed to feel a bit sorry for him. Turning every little scene into a piece of art to drool over would've been counterproductive in my opinion. So they don't do the pretty angle that distracts from his hand being old and the task he's doing being very ordinary. They probably had a multitude of prettier shots but decided against them, when they realized their point got lost. Meaning they might have made a few shots rather lame on purpose. I could be wrong though.

Если бы создатели ролика снимали только с теневой стороны в начале ролика, то все кадры были бы направлены на окно, что не позволило бы создать визуальный контраст со второй частью после появления ноутбука. В ролике отлично видны два мира: бытовой грустный (плоский лобовой) и обновленный (глубокий, контрастный, теневой). Автор видео в своих рассуждениях о кадрах-убийцах карьеры зашел так далеко в субъективном восприятии мира, что забыл, что нет правил в этом искусстве. Солнце не светит только с контрового или сбоку. А люди не встают во время беседы только с теневой, чтобы видеть красивый портрет собедеседника. Убийство карьеры - это закапывать себя в рамки контрового или бокового освещения, которое и так все используют.

Thank you for another very good one. Would you think it is mandatory to precisely follow the logic/motivation of the light source (window in this case) all the time? What if they had cheated a bit, bringing in some additional lights to create a bit more contrast in the reverse angles?

Looks like they tried a practical at 8:26 but decided against turning it on for some reason. Little lamp in that corner would have drawn the eye in a lot. Great breakdown, subscribed 👍
Good video but to cut to the chase... the best cinematography starts with good photography... In my humble opinion, a quick rack focus could have helped the reversal of the dog on the bed by providing an in-built transition within the shot and masking the flatness. Had a practical been next to the bed it might have helped the flatness of the bed scene. I had an issue that the coloration of the light in the curtain/shears was colder than the light on the back wall behind the desk. Did the light warm-up as it traveled through the room?

I think your missing the point that real life is sometimes flat . I worked with a director once filming a guy wearing glasses and I was freaking out moving lights , blocking etc trying to get reflections out of the glasses and he just said hey it’s real life , reflections in glasses happen , just leave it , he was right in looked really natural in the edit but would have looked false if we’d carried on hiding things
I've been doing video for many many years now, and i'm in love with cinematography, but all of your videos drive me crazy hahaha. Your knowledge of cinematography is impressive to say the least.
-- he does excellent job at deconstructing the shots angles , but none of us who loves cinematography should bring the breakdown to the location. None of us should film based on his breakdown otherwise every flick that will be shot is going to look identical and lifeless. Who gives how you light (as long as light is motivated and it helps the story unravel), who gives what angle you shoot as long as you translate the story/message to the viewer. Dont be pretentious, be an artist and shoot art. Not pretty light setups and cool looking angles. Dont listen to me as well, shoot how you want and be as pretentious as your mom allows you and become a sell out.

But I would worry less about the geometry of the room. Put in a Quasar or Kino in that bookcase and just make it pretty. The audience, save for a few DPs, won't care...it's pretty. Put a special on the dog...James T. Kirk lived for years with a taped-down Inkie lighting his eyes. Good show, though. Enjoyed it.
And the color temperature? The two rooms don't match (one warm one green cast), and the shadows he's casting on the wall are really "source-y", but I do appreciate you're being "uncharacteristically kind, and surprisingly not salty. 🤣Great work and thank you for everything you do.
First time viewer and very enjoyable. For a section I did think maybe the director was wanting the that moment in the scene to feel flat and melancholy... Just prior to receiving the book that brightens up the protagonists morning. but then I noticed they return back to the bed. I've not seen the ad in its entirety, so its hard to know if there was any reason to shoot into the corner but if it wasn't intentionally to pull the mood down then yeah, the DP had their work cut out. Lovely and insightful breakdown done well :)
"The only difference between a flare and a highlight is in the day rate." Thanks for recognizing the importance of good Art Direction. Composition pertaining to reveals and vanishing points are made or breaks by lighting. Telling a visual story in :15, :30, even in 1minute requires total control of the viewers eyes. Therefore sometimes boxing in or flatting out the shot sets up a reveal of faster story recognition. A flat or boxed in composition with good light as you've pointed out, creates a sense of pause setting the reveal of the the next frame..IMH. Great videos, entertaining, and very good points of view.

You spent so long at the beginning saying the same thing, I almost clicked away. Glad I stayed. I understand the problems of the flatness of the bad lighting, but it did help make the shot different for when the actor had his life improved by the book.
This is very interesting, facing towards the window is really good. Makes me think about Parasite, many scenes are taken with the large main window behind the camera. Yet it looks great, why is this?
In the shot at 9:34 I see that there's a lamp or reading light in the corner. Maybe they could have turned that on or put a different looking lamp there to give the frame a bit more depth and color? Especially when they cut to the close up shots.

The greatest thing DPs ever started was it’s all about the story.
That line saved more careers than digital did.

In the shot at 9:34 I see that there's a lamp or reading light in the corner. Maybe they could have turned that on or put a different looking lamp there to give the frame a bit more depth and color? Especially when they cut to the close up shots.
