Your excellent work here brings back so many great memories! I grew up near Griffith Park and loved watching Radar Men from the Moon with Commando Cody as a child which is where I believe the concept for The Rocketeer came from. I took my sons to see the film when it came out and we loved it. In 1992 I took them to Disney World and Universal, and we were fortunate enough to see the Bulldog Cafe along with the Rocket pack, helmet and leather jacket that was on display at the time. It was sad though as the Gee Bee that Howard Hughes gave to Cliff at the end of the movie was there and literally falling apart due to weather. I've built RC airplanes for 50 years and am building a 30% Gee Bee that matches the one in the film. It's the same size as the one hanging in the museum. I've always loved period films, and The Rocketeer is one that we never tire of watching. I wish there could've been a sequel. Thank you so much for the effort you've put into this, I truly appreciate it!
That is so cool that you got to see the real Bulldog Cafe and all the other Rocketeer stuff in real life!! I wish I could have seen that. Yes we totally got robbed of a sequel. If only the box office was better! Thanks so much for watching, and the great comment. And good luck with your RC build, that sounds awesome!
I've been inside the Ennis House. It was during the restoration. It's very much like the Millard House (La Miniatura) here in Pasadena. Absolutely beautiful.
As a massive fan of THE ROCKETEER (both comic book and movie), this was a real treat! it's a shame Disney doesn't care about the movie and didn't put any extras on the Blu-ray as what you did here would've been perfect! You really did a great, wonderful job. I always wondered where some of the scenes were shot and it's interesting to see what still exists. Great work!
Thanks, yes Disney owes the fans a making of video, deleted scenes and other goodies! Maybe with talks of a new Rocketeer movie that will finally happen? Thanks for watching, it was a lot of fun to research and film 👍🏻😊
Wow great work on this video. The Rocketeer was one of my favorite movies as a little kid, I just re-watched it the other night, and your video was the perfect cherry on top for my nostalgia trip. Thank you!
Wow. This was an outstanding documentary. It should have been an axtra on the Blu-ray release. Even though it's fan made, the passion and attention to detail are top notch. I loved it! :)
I remember the Disney Adventures magazine. I would anxiously wait for every new edition to show up in the grocery store checkout line. The Rocketeer is such a favorite film.
Same here! I always had my mom look for the new issue of Disney Adventures when she went shopping 😆 I still have a box full of them. Thanks for watching and the comment 👍🏻
Stanley, thank you for this. I wasn't a comic book kid growing up. They just didn't do anything for me. It wasn't until I discovered the original Rocketeer short stories comics after I got out of the Navy. As much as I love the MCU now, The Rocketeer will always be my favorite superhero! I traveled to WDW back in '94 and got to see the Bulldog Cafe and Gee Bee plane on the Disney/MGM backlot your. That was fun but it looked half-scale to the on-screen set used. Also, around the opening of Disney's California Adventure 20 years ago, you could meet and greet w/ The Rocketeer, standing by Howard Hughes' helioplane, in the Condor Flats area. Thanx again for your time and effort put into this video.
Yes, you saw the real Bulldog on the Disney MGM studios backlot. That is so cool, I wish I could have seen it in person. And you saw the Gee Bee. They still have some Rocketeer props lying around at MGM studios. I hope to go there someday . . . before they are gone!
I was looking for a video like yours today of all days since it was 30 years ago tonight that I got to see the movie in theaters for the first time and it's been one of my favorites ever since. This is everything I wanted from a Filming Locations video. Very well put together and clearly alot of research went into it. Kudos to you good sir. 👍
Wow, 30 years ago tonight, that is so awesome! Thanks so much for the kind words , means a lot! Yes, weeks of research trying to track all those locations down. Fun and frustrating!!
As always so enjoyable to watch. Interesting facts about the movie and I want to check out that museum. Great job!! Oh and i know for a certainty that your mom was thrilled to have a small part in this one. 👍
Well done! Very informative and entertaining video. You did such a great job showing these locations, especially with the areas you weren't able to physically visit due to the COVID restrictions. Watching your video once again made me appreciate how underrated this classic movie actually is. Thanks for sharing this video. I must admit, many of the areas that you shared, especially Santa Maria and Piru, were areas I lived in, yet I had no idea were used for locations to the Rocketeer.
Thanks, yes the pandemic sure makes it hard to get to a lot of places. Oh yeah, the rocketeer still holds up after all these years. And the soundtrack is so good. I had never been to Piru, and would have never have known those valleys were used for the rocketeer either . I learned Piru is in a lot of other movies and tv shows also. Thanks for watching!
Great job on the video! It just dawned on me that The Rocketeer and LaLa Land have some interesting things in common- they both used the Rialto Theatre and Griffith Observatory as well as the WB backlot. Also, Hollywood filmmaking is a major part of both plots!
I enjoyed watching this video very much. Thank you for making it. I've been a big fan of The Rocketeer for 30 years ever since 1991. I have the movies on VHS from my childhood, DVD, and then on Blu-Ray. I even had the behind the scenes magazine back in 1991. My dad got the Rocketeer Nintendo NES game for me for Christmas of 1992. I LOVE the South Seas Club and the Bulldog Cafe. The Art Deco atmosphere of the 1930's was amazing.
Those are some great Rocketeer items you had as a kid. It would have been so cool if Kenner or Hasbro made Rocketeer action figures back then . I feel Disney dropped the ball and didn’t market it well at all. Yes the architecture in the movie is so good, I always see new things whenever I watch it . Glad you enjoyed the video!!
Hi there, yes there is a Bulldog at the ideal hour cafe , it is a very similar bulldog , but not unfortunately the one from the Rocketeer. I was actually going to show that one in my video... but I forgot to go to the idle hour. That same bulldog used to be at the Peterson Automotive museum back in the 90’s and I saw it as a kid and I totally thought it was the one from the Rocketeer. Thanks for reminding me of this Bulldog , I will show it when I go back to LA to see Peevy’s House. 👍🏻👍🏻
I saw The Rocketeer back in 1991 it was a good movie with an awesome cast. Today I still like The Rocketeer. I have a couple of The Rocketeer comics books and I have The Rocketeer anniversary pin. Also, that was thoughtful of your mother to buy you a new drone.
Thanks! I think I like the movie even more now as an adult - great direction and dialogue . Yes thanks, the drone footage really added to the video and I’ll be making a follow up video before summer ends.
Just watched this on Disney+ and came back to this video after over 2 years. Still can't see the Ennis house without hearing Terry Silver's theme from The Karate Kid Part 3.
This was totally enjoyable! I just watched the rocketeer this week (haven't seen it since I was a kid!) and wanted to learn more about the movie. Thanks for the upload! You deserve more hits!! I'm linking this page on my FB.
Fantastic work, Stanley! We covered The Rocketeer on our podcast, The Rocketeer Minute, one minute of screen time per episode. It was so much fun, The Rocketeer himself, Billy Campbell, joined us on the show. I sent a link for your video to Billy, and I'm sure he'll enjoy this video as much as we did. PS your mom is awesome for replacing your drone!
Hi there! Thanks, yes I listened to your podcast! It was great! So cool that Billy joined you for a number of episodes. I learned about the filming of the German rocket film footage - being filmed in Santa Maria from your podcast(the episode with Joe Johnston). You and your cohost asked Billy in the minute with Jenny’s dorm , where that building was located ... and he said, “I can’t remember? I think it was done on a soundstage ?” ... and you and your cohost both were skeptical lol But I can’t blame Billy for not remembering, he was probably at that location for one or two days thirty years ago! Cool, thanks for passing the video on to him. I hope he checks it out and enjoys how much that movie meant to all of us. 😊

@@w.w.2restorations.vehicles698 I’m glad you enjoyed the whole video and I appreciated your earlier critique. It’s good to hear different perspectives when making videos 👍🏻
great video! Really enjoyed this retrospective. I remember seeing the Rocketeer, the day it came out, as a grade school kid who loved all things aviation. I was always disappointed that the film did not do as well in theaters. This was the same year as the Gulf War. I also remember watching it many times on the Disney Channel.
Yeah I remember seeing it in the theaters as well, and being bummed that there was no sequel even thought they set it up. I read that Billy Campbell was signed on for two sequels and Jennifer Connolly was signed on for another sequel ... but it just didn’t do well enough at the box office :/
@@StanleyFoss Any COVID updates so far? Would be amazing to check if some locations did reopen - is there any chance to get to the place where the Bulldog Cafe was?
@@hannes_lutzenberger I can’t wait to get back down to LA and check out the house location and a couple other things - my biggest setback now is , I haven’t had two days off in a row since June. My employer is super short staffed and I’ve had to work 6 day weeks. Once that changes - I’m heading back to LA!
Man. This was so awesome! You really are an editing Master. You spent so much time and hard work on this and I really appreciate that. And God bless your mother. Lol
Nice job. I wonder if the area by the Santa Clara river is now restored given that we have had some good rains since you shot the video. And, yeah, cool that your Mom bought that second drone lol!
I used to live in Stevenson Ranch. Had no idea what was just up the street. As a kid, ever since Blade Runner, I wanted to live in the Ennis house. Very good set they built. I would have said it was the real interior.
Yeah so much RV and movie history all around Stevenson Ranch area. Same - I would love to get to go inside the Ennis House. I read that all the interior shots of Blade Runner were also recreated in a sound stage . Pretty crazy.
As a matter of fact, this place was used and in the movie Saving Mr. Banks. It's a great movie and it's on Disney Plus. But this movie helped with the movie Mary Poppins.
Thank you and thanks for the sub! I love Britain. I have gotten to explore it a couple of times. So much history there. You could definitely make some Monte Python location videos ... noting hill, 4 weddings and a funeral. Hope you can start a channel!
Funny story - I went to university in Ealing, London and a couple of years later saw many of my haunts in Monty Python sketches. Alas, I live quite a long way from London in a little town called Kettering. The only thing ever filmed here was Les Miserables. In fact Hugh Jackman showed up to my local gym during the shooting. Oh and Superman 4 was filmed where I work.
Another interesting prop location find for you. I’m an Orlando resident of 24 years and huge Rocketeer fan, and so far as I know the original yellow and black Gee Bee from the start of the film is at the Fantasy of Flight museum just southwest of Orlando right next to I-4 near Lakeland. I’ve never had the chance to visit, but have seen many pictures. Also, the AMC Pleasure Island theaters (now AMC Disney Spring) used to actually host world premieres of Disney movies in the very early 90’s. One of which was Dick Tracy in 1990, but I’ve found and saved pictures of the theater in 1991 with Rocketeer decoration, and even some period cars from the film outside.
Oh that’s so cool . If I ever get over to Orlando I’m going to go check out that flight museum and see the Bee Gee. Thanks for the tip! Yeah, sounds like one of the Rocketeer premieres must have been at that theater, pretty cool 👍🏻
@@StanleyFoss definitely do check it out. Also, there is an excellent company that makes extremely high quality clothing, including many many equally high quality reproductions of movie clothing and accessories. One of which happens to be the iconic leather jacket from The Rocketeer at the link below. They also have reproductions of the boots and pants as well. I’ve wanted so many of their items for crazy nice Halloween costumes, but they are pretty pricey. They sell all of the handful of items for a full Joker outfit, from The Dark Knight. But after the main overcoat, jacket underneath, waistcoat, shirt, tie, pants, shoes, gloves, and even socks, you get into the thousands price-wise. www.magnoliclothiers.com/secord-jacket-custom-made-leather-jackets-by-magnoli-clothiers-p-298.html
We used to go see The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Rialto Theater. I can't believe it's a church now. Lets go down the street to the Canoe House, have a Mai Tai and drown our sorrows.
@@StanleyFoss There were plans to renovate. A long while back I had heard that some celebrity was interested in turning it into a music venue, but Mosiac took over. They've restored and renovated it, but it's still a church.
I have a feeling that the bulldog is gone, Disney did not take care of their Backlot props. We visited several times in the 90's, I remember seeing the hover car from Blade Runner slowly rot away during that time.
This is SO great!! Super Awesome job! I love The Rocketeer! Thank you so much for doing this!😇🤘 Thanks to your mom! I just asked the girl who played Patsy where the Bulldog was! Thank you to the lady that shared her pics and memories. I wish she could've let you in. :) I think they filmed some of Ed Wood at the Rialto? This was the first place I saw Melora/Jan/first Jennifer Parker before Claudia and Elizabeth. This should be on a 30th anniversary blu ray along with the Bill Cambell hosted making of that I taped off of tv on vhs but, never saw again.
Thanks so much for the kind word - glad you enjoyed it . I didn’t think of asking Patsy questions; that was a good idea. Yes I couldn’t get on property, I don’t believe the woman I spoke to lives there anymore . I recently saw Ed wood for the first time , it was great! Yes I love that bit of trivia that Melora was the original Jennifer before Michael J Fox took over the Marty role. Thanks again for watching!
@@StanleyFoss Thank you!! She has yet to answer me lol so your video finally gave me the info. :) I would love to visit these and hopefully you'll be able to get to Peevey's house soon!🤘🥳
Wow! This is cool. I appreciate the detail that went into this video. I was talking about this movie not too long ago. I feel the movie was way under rated.
@@StanleyFoss You made my day watching this.. You have no idea how big of a fan I am of The Rocketeer. Easily my favorite superhero of all time and film. That score, by James Horner is just mesmerizing as well.
By February 2020, it was announced that Azia Squire wrote a new draft for the sequel, which will be released exclusively on Disney's streaming service, Disney+. J. D. Dillard was set to direct. In August 2021, the title The Return of the Rocketeer was announced. Ed Ricourt was hired to write a new draft of the screenplay, with David Oyelowo and his wife Jessica serving as producers, while David may also star as the title role. The plot will center on a former Tuskegee Airman who inherits the rocket pack suit and the heroic mantle. In November 2022, Dillard announced that he was no longer attached to direct as he wanted to take "a breather from period aviation" after having made Devotion.
I hope something gets made, even a Disney + series would be cool. I still would rather it stick closer to Dave Stevens original comic with Cliff, Jenny(Betty), and Peavy, … but I hope anything Rocketeer related gets green lit 👍🏻
This movie is also a read along with the pictures from the movie but at Disneyland in Tomorrowland you can hear music from the movie. For this person, this movie came out in the same year as Beauty and the Beast.
To think we let Covid control our lives like we did or I should say how we let the gov't lie to us about it. Great work Stanley much appreciated because it was a great movie that never got the credit it deserved.

Any update on the Bulldog Café location? Is the gate still closed? Google maps shows a few other streets from different directions :-) Or another drone flight would be possible :-)
I emailed the owners of the property, but they never replied. A drone shot might be the best way to see it now. I remember looking at backroads, but I’m pretty sure they are on private property? I need to examine them again. Thanks for the reminder!
That’s what I thought too. I even saw the bulldog at the Peterson museum when I was a kid... but then after doing research it was just a very similar copy , now at the Idle hour. I was actually going to show that bulldog in the video but Covid/time got in the way.

@@StanleyFoss You're a good man. Again, I appreciate the dialogue with you.
great video!
Great video, very informative.
man, what a video, thanks from my inner child
Glad you enjoyed it!
I love this movie 🎬 i have it on dvd i remember going to the movie's in 1991 to see this movie as a kid my favorite movie of all time
Glad you got to see the movie on the big screen when it came out. Great memories!
So cool!! Great video Stanley
Thank you! ☺️☺️
Man your content and delivery is very very good! Well done - amazing projects and positivity. 👍
Thanks!!
LOVE IT, thank you for the upload! I see I missed a lot of spots during my LA trip. You did a great job! Best wishes all the way from Germany!
Thank you! I love Germany, great country !
On your next LA trip you can hit up the other spots.
Cheers
@@StanleyFoss Will do, thanks
@@StanleyFoss Any COVID updates so far? Would be amazing to check if some locations did reopen - is there any chance to get to the place where the Bulldog Cafe was?
@@hannes_lutzenberger I can’t wait to get back down to LA and check out the house location and a couple other things - my biggest setback now is , I haven’t had two days off in a row since June. My employer is super short staffed and I’ve had to work 6 day weeks. Once that changes - I’m heading back to LA!
@@StanleyFoss Can´t wait! Watched your video over and over, look forward to the next one! Thanks for taking the time!
This was Dope!....One of my favorite movies back in the day and the soundtrack was awesome too!...And Jennifer Connelly was a total BABE!
Yeah such an under appreciated classic! And ditto about Jennifer Connelly!
This is great ! Thank you.
Man. This was so awesome! You really are an editing Master. You spent so much time and hard work on this and I really appreciate that. And God bless your mother. Lol
Haha thank you! Yeah, lots of time and research and traveling … but it was a fun adventure to work one . Glad you enjoyed it!!
You did an excellent job on this video. Thank you! I’m a huge fan of The Rocketeer and this video is inspired.
Thank you! Yes it definitely was a passion project putting it all together.
@@StanleyFoss this would be a cool extra on the next blue ray release.
Excellent work, man. Production keeps getting better and better. Love the intro with the comics.
😁 thanks!
Great work
Thank you for this awesome piece of content 🍍🌮
Nice job. I wonder if the area by the Santa Clara river is now restored given that we have had some good rains since you shot the video. And, yeah, cool that your Mom bought that second drone lol!
I need to go back there now that I know how to fly better, and since we had a pretty rainy winter the past couple years.
*TV
As a matter of fact, this place was used and in the movie Saving Mr. Banks. It's a great movie and it's on Disney Plus. But this movie helped with the movie Mary Poppins.
Dude seriously THANKS for doing this! Amazing. You are my hero lol!
Haha , thanks ! I knew the die hard Rocketeer fans would appreciate it 👍🏻 😁
Great job on this research.
Thanks! All the research is one of the most fun and also frustrating parts of making the video :)
This is exactly what I want to do as soon as lockdown ends properly. Albeit we don't have many movie locations in Britain. Bravo sir. Subbed.
That’s awesome you saw Hugh Jackman! And I love all the old Superman movies. Those locations would be fun to see now!
Great job!!! Loved it.
Thanks so much! I always enjoy your IG content 👍🏻
@@StanleyFoss thanks! Do you do your own editing? Very impressive if so. Must take forever! Looks professional.
Yes, ... and yes it took forever!! 😣
Yay! Glad it turned out well!
@@StanleyFoss nice! If you don’t edit for a living, you should
Another interesting prop location find for you.
Cool I’ll check out that company, it’s hard to find an authentic looking rocketeer jacket 👍🏻
Bravo Work!
We used to go see The Rocky Horror Picture Show at the Rialto Theater. I can't believe it's a church now. Lets go down the street to the Canoe House, have a Mai Tai and drown our sorrows.
I wish it was still a theater, but at least it hasn’t been bulldozed
@@StanleyFoss There were plans to renovate. A long while back I had heard that some celebrity was interested in turning it into a music venue, but Mosiac took over. They've restored and renovated it, but it's still a church.
great video !!
Merci !
I have a feeling that the bulldog is gone, Disney did not take care of their Backlot props. We visited several times in the 90's, I remember seeing the hover car from Blade Runner slowly rot away during that time.
Yeah your probably right. Sad they just let all that stuff deteriorate in the sun.
Watching again and the The Rocketeer.. I really appreciate you doing these locations, buddy! 🤘😁
Wow! This is cool. I appreciate the detail that went into this video. I was talking about this movie not too long ago. I feel the movie was way under rated.
Thanks! Yes hopefully the Rocketeer gets more recognition with it being on Disney +. Very underrated!
This is amazing! Thank you.
Thanks! It was ALOT of research - but fun to make z
@@StanleyFoss You made my day watching this.. You have no idea how big of a fan I am of The Rocketeer. Easily my favorite superhero of all time and film. That score, by James Horner is just mesmerizing as well.
Oh yeah ; great score. I had to find someone on YT who he covered it for the video - it was essential 👍🏻
Well done!
Thanks!
Wish they made more movies like this one
Well done! It's a shame that you made this during the Coof. I'd love to see you revisit everything now that things are all open again.
I’m definitely go to visit a couple again for sure … very soon I hope!
The rocketeer spectacular
I have just subscribed to your channel 👍👍👍👍
Thank you so much!
Hey Stanley u going to do a review of the new saved by the Bell
If I don’t have too much work this week I’m going to try to make a quick review ... I do have some thoughts about it .
This movie is also a read along with the pictures from the movie but at Disneyland in Tomorrowland you can hear music from the movie. For this person, this movie came out in the same year as Beauty and the Beast.
Oh that’s cool, I didn’t know that 👌🏻
@@StanleyFoss I guess you learn something new from me.
On the helmet it almost looks like aviator sun glasses lenses placed up side down for the viewing holes
Oh yeah?! Cool observation 👍🏻
To think we let Covid control our lives like we did or I should say how we let the gov't lie to us about it. Great work Stanley much appreciated because it was a great movie that never got the credit it deserved.
I know!! Future generations are probably going to think we all went a bit crazy 😬🫣
Thanks for watching!
Thanks to this person's mother for what she did.
also just subbed really enjoyed this, hope your channel blows in a good way not like the jetpack
Thanks so much! lol yeah that would be awesome if it blew up! 🚀
Howdy, the zep scene was adjacent to the 126 west of the main gate you were standing near in a small grove of eucalyptus trees
Cool! Thanks for the additional info 👍🏻
@@StanleyFoss the tail section was opposite the entrance to the landfill before it or the widening of the 126...did you mention Black Sheep Squadron filmed a the airstrip too?
@@briansimson933 thanks for the first hand info; I’ll have to check out Black sheep squadron; I’ve never heard of it 👍🏻
This video is amazing! Bravo!
Thank you for sharing and for all the detailed research you did to make this possible
Thank you! This was a fun one to research and film. :)
@@StanleyFoss That would be great, thank you for spending the time & money!
It would be cool if you could put timestamps/chapters for all the different locations
That’s a good idea, I need to figure out how to do that…
Aces! You blew my wig, chum!
Hahah, best comment, thanks!
Is the bulldog cafe that is at idle hour bar in Burbank the same from the movie?
Video coming out about that in a couple days 👍🏻
But in answer to your question, no. But it is a very cool, very similar.
I remember this movie and it's on disney plus.
Yes, it’s on Disney+ and the movie still holds up 👍🏻👍🏻
I thought the bulldog was at a car museum in Hollywood for a bit and currently resides at the back of a bar?
That’s what I thought too. I even saw the bulldog at the Peterson museum when I was a kid... but then after doing research it was just a very similar copy , now at the Idle hour. I was actually going to show that bulldog in the video but Covid/time got in the way.
Nicely done. Some interesting research for sure. I've always wondered but I know now, "the son-of-a-bitch will fly."
Thanks! Lol , love that quote!
could you do a blog about locations for the incredible hulk tv pilot with bill bixby that would be so cool.
Fantastic idea 👍🏻
i understand it was somewhere in the college of
the canyons but i have had difficulty narrowing it
down . perhaps since you live in the states you could do better.
