Nowadays its pretty much impossible to buy a new car with a manual transmission, crank windows, and no cruise control. But 20 years ago, Volkswagen would let you do just that, and all in another nearly extinct automotive niche, the station wagon. By combining spartan accommodations with husky German build quality and packaging it with relatively low weight and a peppy economical engine, Volkswagen allowed customers to order a specification of car that was both minimalist and fun to drive. I liked it so much I flew to Texas and drove it home.

Man those corduroys are the bee’s knees.
If you ever part out the car let me know , want those manual windows
Janky do Thanky, but Janky no Thanky, far too nice to part out. I have some specific plans for this vehicle which will be unveiled soon enough, as soon as the weather cooperates and I can dig into it in earnest. Funny how the base model features are now the most sought after...
only thing these cars need is a 6th gear and they'd be excellent road trippers
I 100% agree driving this thing across country in 5th gear at like 4k rpm and no cruise control was an interesting experience, not to mention the manual transmission in some gnarly freeway bumper to bumper. Its so well suited as a little small town runaround tho, very zippy for 110hp or however much it is
Man those corduroys are the bee’s knees.
nice catch, they're eddie bauer brand, and were just given to me second hand. amazingly comfortable. janky do thanky
